Oan Tafel

"80% homegrown produce and vegetables, the remaining meat and fish comes from further afield. Such is the concept of this natural restaurant, whose interior sports raw materials, a handsome counter and a casual vibe. Eastern exuberance meets Frisian temperance. Fermentations, sweet and sour touches, surprising flavours… Intriguing!" - Michelin Inspector

The score would be 0/5 but, unfortunately, it is not possible. We went there because we saw it recommended in the Michelin guide (still surprised after all…) We arrived at 7:00 p.m. on Friday 08/12/23. They welcomed us kindly, we took a seat at the bar and ordered the 8-course menu. So far so good. But then the appetizer arrived: three mini bites, all simple and random. Little more to say. After the starter, the first of the 8 dishes on the menu arrived after 35 minutes, the second after 30 minutes and the third after 40 minutes. And there were still 5 more dishes… By the way, nothing to highlight about any of them. Of course, we had all the time in the world to watch how “the chef” (the tallest of all) constantly rubbed his nose, pulled up his underwear and put food in his mouth with the same hands with which he cooked the dishes, and of course, without washing them at any time. Still in shock and disgusted. After half an hour more waiting for the fourth dish, we decided to ask for the bill, explaining our deep discontent. To our surprise, the waiter in the vest didn't even flinch and brought us a bill of €154 for a 4-course menu (having only eaten 3) and a couple of drinks each, without showing any interest and arguing that he couldn't charge us less (when they had also told us that the real 4-course menu came with much larger quantities than the 8-course one). We paid the bill indignantly, feeling completely ignored and cheated. At the exit, one of the waitresses wanted to listen to our complaints and agreed with us at all times, but she didn't do anything about it either. It has undoubtedly been a disastrous gastronomic experience. One of the worst we have ever experienced. We ended up in an other place eating Nachos for dinner. What a night.

Very nice restaurant with a truly surprising menu - world-class! High quality and friendly service. As a small suggestion for improvement, while the open kitchen setup gives a great vibe to the whole dining experience - its unpleasant to start cleaning the entire kitchen while guest are still enjoying their dinner. We got the feeling that we had to hurry up and finish off quickly given all the noise coming from the kitchen cleaning. Maybe something to consider?

Also as a client the 8th of december and in response to Geert-Jan, it is obvious that you were not present that night in your own restaurant (or at least in that kitchen), so I recommend that you do not give an opinion without knowing and, if you do, at least be polite to those who have wasted their time and money on your personal project. Your response is unproffesional, acknowleding that you charged us more than necessary. Congratulations. On the other hand, I see that you haven't spent much time reading Joan's review carefully either: we expressed our complaint to two people and it was of absolutely no use. Finally, do you really think that we are impatient people for not accepting that a restaurant recommended by the Michelin guide (€€€€) takes more than two hours to serve us 3 small dishes? Each eaten in a minute. It's hilarious... Accepting the clients reviews (both good and bad) and knowing how to apologize says a lot about the business, but above all, about the people who runs it.

Beautiful and tasty food, mostly with local ingredients from the season. Super suggested as the dishes look magical, tasty great and are mostly vegetarian. Can’t recommend enough.

A fantastic culinary experience in Wergea. My partner and I pampered ourselves with a short vacation in beautiful Friesland, and here is where we had our last dinner. A beautiful, thoughtfully designed space that comprises a long and winding bar and a few tables. Warm decor (lots of reclaimed material), perfect lighting. The people serving us throughout the evening were all wonderful: engaging, attentive and not overbearing at exactly the right level. And the food, oh my. We opted for the eight course dinner, which from beginning to end was simply sublime. Culinary influences from around the world, locally sourced and grown ingredients when possible, incredible flavor profiles and quite a bit of playfulness. we went for a non-alcoholic "pairing", which offered excellent and unique soft drinks (cucumber, apricot/almond, ginger beer) along the meal. Here I would humbly recommend perhaps an effort in creating and offering their own non-alcoholic beverages/infusions. Few restaurants do the efforts but if there's one that can - Oan Tafel definitely is the one. We will remember this evening for a long time, and long for coming back!

I had a great experience at Oan Tafel! Food was amazing and the wine pairing also well though through and explained.
