The 38 Essential Restaurants in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland, New Zealand)

"Minkyu (Paul) Lee and his wife, Lisa, offer a taste of Korea at Ockhee, a small restaurant on Ponsonby Road with a whole lot of soul. There’s excellent Korean fried chicken and crispy potato jeon to go with the natural wines on tap and soju cocktails; while the rest of the menu is brimming with Korean dishes, the couple learned from Lisa’s mum, such as chun sa chae (steamed seaweed noodle salad with garlic mustard sauce); sticky barbecue dak gui chicken, which goes great with black rice and seaweed balls; and hearty bowls of jeon gol, made with broth that’s been simmering all day. Don’t leave without copping some of the restaurant’s sought-after merch. — LJ" - Hillary Eaton, Leisha Jones

Super delicious food ! It’s like a hipster Korean restaurant, cooking familiar Korean dish with style. Portions are a bit bigger than tapas , I would say 4 appetizers and 1 main was just enough between 2 people. Recommended the noodle salad, chicken skin, zucchini chips and spicy rice cakes !

My friend and I went here for dinner and we really enjoyed it! They were pretty busy for a Monday night, but they still managed to let us have a table. We were feeling pretty hungry, so we shared 2 mains (japchae and bbq spicy pork with cheese) and 2 sides (persimmon kimchi and korean fried chicken spicy soy flavour). The fried chicken a day bbq spicy pork were my fave - really packed with flavour, and they even gave us some gloves so we can use our hands to eat the saucy fried chicken. They gave us each a shot when we were wrapping up, and that was a perfect way to end our dinner! Would go back for more 😁

Food Serving Portions are terriblly small and prices are deceptive so you end spending quite a bit $$$ for a filling meal. Service was quite unfriendly by the waitress but the owner was quite cheerful. Very small space .. not recommended for a group of 5 or more.. food presentation was amazing and tasted quite high quality as well.

Amazing S(e)oul Food! We had an amazing yummy dinner here. Side dishes (Chicken with sesam crust) and noodles and tofu. For us was the size of the dishes very good and the service was absolutely amazing. Especially Bully who made an amazing service at Swing (if you're looking for amazing Toast you should also have a look there!!) Catched us here ♥️ For 2 Person with 2 Meals and 2 Sides & Drinks we spend 100$ - so you can actually dine cheaper but the quality and service and taste are good :) Thanks for having us and give us a taste of Korea 🫶

the atmosphere was lovely, the service was good but the food was pretty underwhelming. we were disappointed as we had quite high expectations for the food. chun sa chae noodles were refreshing with the right amount of mustard. crispy cauliflower and broccoli were chewy but not crispy at all. all the mains we got were very, very salty yet lacked the spiciness. bul bossam was thick albeit dry and tough, unlike the usual bossam. BBQ chicken gui was just way too salty. and the rice ball was salty as well. we are not people who eat clean, we enjoy good savoury flavours but i just found ockhee’s food way too salty and overpowering.

Everything we ordered was so delicious I was so delighted. We got spicy fried chicken, fritters with roasted veggies & eggplant, beef hot pot and bul bo sam (braised pork flame grilled in sauce) with additional cheese on top. The meat was so tender and warm. The only downside was the hot pot got cold fast in a shallow pan and the tea light candle not enough to keep the heat. Don't know if we got lucky or everything is tasty!
