The 8 Best Italian Beef Sandwiches in Chicago | Bon Appétit

"A neighborhood lunchtime gem since 1972 with a nostalgic interior and a distinctive breakfast-lunch sensibility, the beef here is slow-braised until tender but still sliceable, producing layers that stay sturdy on top and juicy toward the bottom—perfect for slow eaters who want both crunch and soak. The shop serves hot peppers on the side so you can control heat, fries cooked in beef fat and finished with Maldon salt, and a friendly, community-focused service style; recommended: the Italian beef mild, dipped, stuffed with hot peppers and a side cheese cup." - ByXimena N. Absolutely love Odge’s! I remember coming here as a kid in the late 90s/early 00s and let me tell you that they have not changed since. The nostalgic atmosphere along with classic eats complement one another. One is literally transported to simpler times. I will be bringing my daughter here so she can have the same sense of joy and experience. Thank you fellas!

Google
This place is great, it has become our regular lunch place when we are working near by. Today I had the double hamburger and it was excellent! The fries are very good, they are perfectly crispy. I usually get rice pudding, but today they had banana pudding and it was great!

Google
In the area found myself here and I'm glad I did. Ordered a double cheeseburger 🍔 this was made perfectly. I mean like a real homemade burger with grilled onion, cheese, and two well-seasoned burger patties. 9.3. The burger came out hot n fresh plus the cheese melted making this a messy, gooey, rich burger. It's cash-only here thou, but for me, this place is a gem probably in my top 10 for burgers in the city.

Google
These burgers are soooo GOOD!!!! They are made right there in the same building. They are fresh and are thick! The fries are just as good. People are consistently coming and going so you may have to wait but that’s bc everything is fresh. The atmosphere gives old school burger joint. They accept card and cash.

Google
I love this place! The food is always consistently great, the people who work here are so nice, and the dining area is old school and fun. Odges is one of my favorite places to grab lunch in the neighborhood. <3

Google
Fast food with flavors from home made food, delicious burgers and fries in an atmosphere from a little museum. It was a great time to stop at this little treasure.

Google
Oh my my.....definitely an excellent Smashie burger....massive double burgers.....oh dear, so fresh and mouthwatering rockin backyard burger....to say I recommend this GEM OF A FIND is an understatement 👌 😀

Yelp
The place has won my heart. Old school hot dog/ burger joint with very very very tasty food. It opened in the 70s and is still going strong. Usually the same guy is working there everytime I go, really nice dude. Best part is everything comes with fries and it's affordable. Cheeseburger and fries is $8! Entering this place feels like taking a Time Machine to the old days. Very good, very authentic, highly recommend.

Yelp
Old school style diner type place with a short menu of burgers and hot dogs that definitely maintains the era it was founded in. But appearances aside, the food doesn't disappoint. ATMOSPHERE/ARCHITECTURE: 8/10 This is a hit or miss depending on who you are, but it definitely looks like it was made in the 70s and never changed since then. Not nice or fancy, but it has a vibe and you know what? I like it. SERVICE: 7/10 No frills or flair, but the workers are regulars and you get to know them. Service is quick and to the point. FOOD: 9/10 Burger and Fries - 9/10 - Burger is a solid burger. For the price, I would even say it is simply unmatched. The fries are okay, not my favorite, but they do the job. Overall, a solid burger joint. VALUE: 10/10 Prices are the best bang for your buck. PROBABILITY OF RETURN: 9/10 TO EAT OR NOT TO EAT: Eat! OVERALL: 9/10

Yelp
Absolutely awful. They really hate their customers. They have a credit card terminal that accepts tap to pay, but randomly the guy decides to say you can't use a phone, you must have cash or card. The food is not worth the hassle of this place.

Yelp
Delicious burgers and chili. Been a staple in the neighborhood for years! My mom and I would stop there for chili! Recently Ive enjoyed the biscoff banana pudding. It's delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
For an Italian Beef and a soda fifteen bucks felt a touch steep, but it came with a healthy portion of fries so in the end I was happy. The restaurant atmosphere itself feels like a refreshing step back in time, and not in a gimmicky way. Like it's been there for lifetimes. There were only two men working behind the counter. That said the service was still very efficient. If you're in the neighborhood and craving some diner classics I'd recommend stopping by.

Dave C.

Yelp
Was about to order a beef but went with a burger instead. It was a really good burger! The french fries were decent too. It is nowhere near me, but if I was back in that neighborhood I would not hesitate to stop in again. Parking can be a challenge. I found myself parking a few blocks away.

Yelp
5 star hands down burgers are real burgers not patties customer service is good its an old fashioned gem

Kevin L.

Yelp
If I can give it 10 stars I would! Been coming here for the past ten years with my buddies and it's always an amazing experience. Incredible customer service and incredible food you'll enjoy every minute of it!
google avatar

Joe L.

Yelp
Best Burger in the neighborhood! Recently tried the steak sandwich which was also great. They now have evening hours too!
google avatar

Frank D.

Yelp
I really wanted to try this place. But twice now, i've shown up to find them closed more than two hours before their posted closing time. It's a shame, because their stuff looks really good. Fool me twice, though.
google avatar

Leelee M.

Yelp
I think best burger and fries, nothing fancy, not a huge menu, but you can def get your burger and hot dog fix here. They now are taking cards, which is GREAT
google avatar

Yelp
Hole in the wall joint founded in 1972 back when this was mainly an industrial area. Walking in.. you have to walk out the door to change your mind... small open kitchen ordering area with adjacent dining area with some booths and old pictures of Chicago! Straight to the point menu with Hot Dogs, Burgers, Italian Beef, etc. The star of the show here is the Double Cheeseburger, trust me when I tell you this is one of the best in the city! Two griddled Slagel Farms 25 day dry aged patties with lettuce, tomato, homemade pickles, grilled onions, ketchup, mustard with great american cheese on a homeymade bun; served with fries. Served piping hot... let it sit for a minute so the cheese melts all over everything.. I KNOW. Prices a bit above average but you're paying for high quality! Must stop joint/ talk later
google avatar

Carlos H.

Yelp
Stopped by here for a true Chicago-style hot dog and it didn't disappoint at all. Prices were more than fair. It had that old-school vibe to it, even the bathroom looked lost in the 90s or 80s or before. Excellent.
google avatar

Gabrielle G.

Yelp
Very straight to the point and reasonably priced. My roommate and I ordered burgers and they followed our special requests and our food was hot and fresh when we picked it up. Extremely friendly staff and great food!
google avatar

William W.

Yelp
This was my first time ordering to this place. I will buy some burgers to take out to eat while I'm driving since I haven't eaten lunch. After I ordered a burger it came really quick. The staff are efficient and have a quick skill in making orders. They are professional and know what they are doing. They do a good job. When I open my burger in my car it looks presentable and not messy compared to the burger that I ate last week. They have a little amount of sauce inside that can be one of the reasons why it's not getting messy when I open it. It's a little bit oily but when I bite it it is so good. The meat was juicy and flavorful.

Brian S.

Yelp
We've been going there for years. The staff is friendly and the food is delicious. The old timey signs on the wall give it a great feel. I recommend the Steak Sandwich and Double Cheeseburger. The fries are the best I've ever had. They pair well with the Tamale Tub (Tamale in Chili with Cheese). Enjoy!
google avatar

Jeremy S.

Yelp
For a mere $2.95 you get a dog with "everything" (onions, peppers, relish, mustard, and a pickle) and fries. With a Coke my meal still under $6, not bad in a recession. The dog was tasty, though the bun was of the dough-y super soft variety. Maybe you're into that, but I prefer a more hearty bread. The small seating area was quaint with some antiques for decor. Definitely seems like this place has been around for a long time. No real complaints.
google avatar

Matt M.

Yelp
By far the best burger in town this place is currently making me fat because I go there every day
google avatar

Yelp
Don't bring those friends of yours that will look too closely at a divey hellhole like Odge's...bring your longtime local friends that love a good dog, fast service and a great value proposition. I stopped by yesterday for lunch and got the chili dog, fries and a soda for $7 and left very happy (mainly with the chili, bun on that dog and the fries...the dog itself was average). My sense is that the burgers are the way to go here, but Odge's Old Fashioned Hot Dogs is the name, so I had to know about those dogs first. I drove by this place for years and probably got spooked by the look of the place from the outside, but that's a mistake. Chicago does this category better than any other US city and Odge's just adds to that list!

Jim J.

Yelp
Last time I got Odges was about 3 years ago and I stopped cuz one time my chicken sandwich was NOT cooked in the middle and was so gross. After 3 years I was like "let me give em a chance again cuz I actually liked their burgers before the chicken sandwich incident" Well, I shouldn't have! I called em at the times in the picture, and they kept saying "call back in 10 minutes he delivery guy isn't here yet". I called back two more times and the guy still wasn't there. Thing is the person that kept answering the phone was rude! Like dude, don't get mad at me for calling! You're a freaking business! Make sure your workers are there in time cuz you just lost an order for 15 people. Sheesh!

Tomasz K.

Yelp
My wife and I are big eaters. So to satisfy our stomach we search for a place while driving. We found a place that has good dishes yet has a cheaper price. We ordered 10 different burgers. While waiting in our order we just took each other a selfie. Gladly our food came quickly. It was hot and fresh. The burger has a good patty. They have a hood flavor and it's juicy. It's pretty good and mouthwatering. It has side dishes on every burger. It is a fries that has a good cook. The fries are crunchy outside and soft inside. It's perfect if you dip it in some ketchup. I will give 5 stars for good food. Their service is also good. The waiter is nice. Highly recommend this place

Mercy D.

Yelp
First time here and it's very good food + customer service definitely recommend to first timers looking for something to eat in Chicago
google avatar

Abū Bakr A.

Yelp
Locals tell me this spot has been around way before West Town was gentrified. So yeah, cool fact. This is a cash only (ATM inside) spot to get your Chicago street food fix. They have got the Chicago style hotdogs, Italian beef sandwiches and nice homemade burgers. The close a little too early for my liking on weekdays but I would definitely go back here when in the mood to spoil myself.
google avatar

Maximus D.

Yelp
Cook wasn't wearing a mask plus the food ain't all that good. I called to place my order and it rang and rang till it stopped ringing so I walked over. Sure enough, the minimum wage cook wasn't answering g the phone and he wonders why he makes minimum wage
google avatar

Javier G.

Yelp
Best chicken and burgers in town. Especially the fries are to die for. I usually get chicken sandwich fries and dont forget the cup of cheese to go with it.
google avatar

Yelp
It's hard for me to review this place objectively. I used to live on Damen & Huron, just a few steps away and I used to go there all the time. Had cheeseburgers, hotdogs, beefs, most of their menu. Since you're right at the counter when you order you can always request it how you want it, easy and done. Believe me, none of it's good for you though... greasy and fatty; if you live nearby beware of going too much because of speed and convenience. So here's my "beef"... I was a regular there for nearly two years. I knew the workers and they knew me. One day I ran up about 30 minutes before closing. The door's locked, I knock and see Odge inside. I open my hands wondering what the deal was, and he hand gestured "we're closed" (even though they should have still been open) yet I see two cops sitting inside and stuffing their faces with food. I lost respect for that place and never went back. That's not how you treat a loyal customer.

Yelp
The mural on the outside of the building says a lot - looks like a carnival ride for your stomach - the main reason I came in. Once I walked inside I saw sights that I never would have imagined. Vintage toys, an old 1950s coke machine, a metal lunchbox and thermos like the one I took to school in 1st grade! and a PHONE BOOTH. They've got a definite style at Odge's...I just can't seem to pinpoint it. Some quick facts about Odge's - No bills over $20 - Buy 4 Cheeseburgers or hot dogs, get one free - Cakes and pies available in the cooler by the front counter - Ice cream and pudding cups also available - All treats look home made - I did not get confirmation on this. - Real stand up guys working behind the counter - All orders MUST come with fries.....I'm still theorizing the reasoning behind this rule. I had a 1/2 pound burger (with fries....hella fries) and added bacon for like 0.50 - it's so worth all future cardiovascular issues. Juicy burger, fresh tomato and lettuce, crisp bacon. Just all around Gangsta. -1 star for "Cash only", ugh, unacceptable. -1 star for keeping the most bizarre hours of any place I've ever been to. Close during dinner time? Closed on a Saturday? I don't get it. If you have a chance to visit and can work around their random hours, you'll enjoy it. Check out the pictures too!

Jordan K.

Yelp
Best damn cheeseburgers in the city. Also comes with a solid amount of fries. Quick & friendly service. If you have not been here you are missing out.
google avatar

Y V.

Yelp
This small, family-run place offers your basic fast-food lunch. Hot dogs, Polish sausages, cheeseburgers, Italian beef, and fries. I used to live around the corner from Odges, which was really convenient when I needed my Chicago-style hot dog fix. Plenty of cops go to Odges, which is usually a good sign. And it's so much better than the other options in that area (McDonald's, Subway). Check it out the next time you're in Ukrainian Village.
google avatar

Russell J.

Yelp
When in Rome do as the romans... when in Chicago, eat a Italian beef... I'm not big on fancy places, and the place fits my likings. Ma and pa type place, simple but great menu.
google avatar

Ahmad D.

Yelp
5 stars for the food. 1 Star for the unprofessional business operations. Second time within a month I've stopped by on a Wednesday afternoon and they are closed. Hours of operation say open until 8 PM. Sheesh get yourselves together and set up a consistent hours of operation. Middle eastern food will earn my business for a second time this month. Great food by the way!
google avatar

Kaley W.

Yelp
Drooooool. Odge's will bring you back in time to similar American classics. There are only a few tables so you may have to take your food to go or wait a bit for someone to leave. It's counter style, cash only ordering but there's an ATM inside if you forget. I ordered a cheeseburger with everything on it and fries. The combination of the toppings combined with the flavor of the beef burger was to die for and I'm drooling thinking about it. I tried a few onion rings that my friend ordered and they were incredible. This is a perfect spot for a quick bite to go or a cheaper date idea. The space inside is incredibly retro too. Don't ever change Odge's!
google avatar

Felicia M.

Yelp
Fast and friendly service :). Ordered the cheese burger with everything and the fries that come with are great! Nice old-school taste.
google avatar

Summer S.

Yelp
I love this place. It's very close to my house, and it's a ideal place to grab a quick bite.
google avatar

Pablo S.

Yelp
I remember stopping at Odge's back in the day on my way to Chicago stadium to see the Blackhawks play. Being in the neighborhood on national cheeseburger day I revisited my pre Blackhawks game meal. Not much has changed. Vintage pictures line the walls, as well as metal cars hung throughout the place. And while the neighborhood has become gentrified and yuppie filled Odge's still delivers on quality Chicago style fast food and at a fair price. I had the double cheeseburger with fries and a rootbeer for my meal. The burgers are made fresh daily here and you can taste that after taking your first bite. The fries are perfect; cooked perfectly; they remind me of McDonald's fries but without all the things McDonald's puts in their fries. Odge's is old school; a part of Chicago neighborhoods and a part of Americana. So many places like Odge's have succumbed to the gentrification of the neighborhoods they were a part of. When in West Town/Ukrainian Village check them out. They have a good selection to choose from.
google avatar

Waldo I.

Yelp
This place grinds their own beef straight from a local farm, and you can tell in the quality and taste. I love the food here, everything I have tried so far was great. I had a double cheeseburger this time and it was one of the best I've had. I live next to small cheval which used to be my go to burger spot, and now I drive down to Odge's to get my burgers. The owner Edwin is really nice and it makes the experience that much better. Looking forward to trying more stuff but once I eat a double cheeseburger, which comes with fries by the way, I'm usually so stuffed I don't have room for anything else.
google avatar

Frank Q.

Yelp
This is definitively a low key real Chicago hot dog spot. They're still cranking out hot dogs in natural casings. Cheap prices and great food is why. Nothing fancy here so cash only. Hot dogs, daily homemade burgers and chili, crispy fries, tamales and other food/drinks.
google avatar

Esther C.

Yelp
Love, love their Italian beefs and hotdogs! They are a local small gem with chicago style hotdogs! Mmm!
google avatar

Steve I.

Yelp
Odge's has been around for 44 years. The founder passed away a year and a half ago. Now, his son has taken over the business. The main staple here are fresh hand packed burgers and hot dogs. The burgers are fried, but don't let that deter you. They are delicious in every sense of the word. Get them with grilled onions. They are never overcooked. The hot dogs are your classic Chicago dog. Vienna beef, plain steamed bun, yellow mustard, onions, relish, pickle, sport peppers, and celery salt. You have to ask for the celery salt. The decor inside is an homage to Chicago's past including some memorable moments in the city's history. Space inside is limited, but people generally don't spend hours at a table. There is a wide variety of beverages (fountain and bottle) to cater to every taste. It's also cash only.
google avatar

Omar Q.

Yelp
This spot is tiny, and I'd guess that there are a ton of places like it in Chicago. Nevertheless, the dogs are amazing, cheap, and convenient. If you're a newcomer to Chicago style hot dogs, you'd do very well to make Odge's your first.
google avatar

Josh W.

Yelp
Classic old school hot dog joint. I've been comong here for nearly 20 years but it has been a couple of years since I've last patronized here. I was sad to hear the original owner Odge had passed away, but his son is keeping up the place well with some tweeks to the menu in a positive way. The steak sandwich is still great, a little high on the price but it's quality meat, not that cheap substitue. Parking is a challenge and not much seating, but the nostalgic charm inside is worth staying for.

Michael Z.

Yelp
Sensational authentic chicago food. For those in the know, the hotdogs are the real kind the "red hots" naturally cased so they snap at each bite on fresh buns and guess what? They're always hot and fresh like They were meant to be. The burgers are incredible , perfectly thin and unbelievably juicy and it's every time. The guys who work there just have a rhythm they don't have to hover over anything to make sure it's right. Tacos & tamales are some of the most popular items you watch fly out the door in brown bags grabbed by hands of blue and white collar alike. For me it's the chili... I've had a chili problem since at least high school and I've fixed it at many local spots bishops lindys, foxes in Beverly a place called bird dogs across from lakeview high school that has been replaced by a Popeyes for some years. But when I finally made my way into odge's (sometime in the 90's) it was all over. Back then it was Odges wife and I think her sister who made the chili. Everyday a brand new batch was started around 4pm so it could have enough cooking time to be ready for the the next days lunch service. These days it Eddie Odge's son making it all happen. Often times you expect a place to slip a bit when a new generation takes over but Odges has gotten even better under Ed's careful watching eye. He's a brilliant foodie and a real chef. There's so much to know about Eddie but the story of Odges is coming out soon and there's a ton of folks who know him way better than me. I've been coming maybe 25 years and I'm a baby in the long loyal following. The longtime following grew up going. That's where Ed's heart seems to be most, to keep the place their place and the food affordable though he sources ingredients as a gourmet chef. He's a hard core foodie too. He can make magic Happen with a truffle which is one of the worlds most expensive foods and someday there will be a book about his life and his influence within the local food scenes of chicago. If there's a chef in a local spot in a neighborhood who's innovating enough to catch on Eds knows the chef.

Yelp
Omg this small place packs a power punch. My boyfriend told me about this place and I doubted him. The menu isn't fancy it straight forward burgers, hot dogs, and tamales(yummy). The burgers are amazing hot hand made and yummy, like an old fashioned hamburger. The service is amazing and the decor is vintage so feel free to look around at Chicago history while you wait. Definitely will be back!!!

Ken K.

Yelp
The service and food were great. I had several bad experiences at McDonalds around the corner. Odge"s is very clean
google avatar

Geralt A.

Yelp
This is not the fancy place, that serves Hotdogs wrapped with gold leaves and caviar. This is good old classic Chicagoan essential. You are walking on Damen just off Chicago Ave and suddenly a wild yellow shack appears. You smell mouth watering grease. What you do, you enter the shady looking door. And you order the classic dog with everything on it and fries on the side. Now you devour the dog and the toppings that come with it. Now you let the flavor do the magic. I absolutely love it. The interior is pretty funky looking almost as if Guy Fiery spend his time to design the interior. I could complain about how the bun was soggy etc... but heck for the price it was all worth it.
google avatar

Robert P.

Yelp
I first went to Odges when I was about 10 years old in the mid 1970's, when the neighborhood was different. Odges had just opened. I went back again in 1984. The food was as good as ever. The hot dogs had the crisp casing, the buns were warm, and the fries plentiful. Fast forward to 2019. I went back to visit from Texas and stopped by. My son loved the food. The same buy 4 hot dogs and get one free deal was there from thirty years before. The food was just as good. Odges is as close to an institution as there is in the neighborhood, much like the Italian bakery Gonella's which was a few blocks south on Damen, used to be.
google avatar

Sean Q.

Yelp
Odge's has some delicious hot dogs. Chicago style at it's finest. The service is largely incompetent and they seem to be oblivious to their surroundings, but the food is good. For example, they didn't have any bottled water, which we had paid for already. They were completely unaware. I thought, you know what, not a big deal, it happens. Then we asked for napkins, which they were again, out of. So now I'm eating a chicago style frank with mustard and pepper juices all over my hands and held completely hostage. Not good man. Anyways, like I said, the hot dogs are top notch and the fries are really nice and crispy. Loved them. As a final note, if you buy four dogs, you get the fifth free which is pretty gnarly. Check this place out if you're in the area.
google avatar

Kristina B.

Yelp
I used to go here all the time, back in the hay day (YOU know...the day of hay! Duh!). They have really good hot dogs here. I mean really good. But that's not their claim to fame (my menu item of choice is documented in paragraph 3). I'd give this place 5 stars alone for my menu item of choice, but there used to be a dude who worked here who went out with one of my good friends from 8th grade, and he ended up being a total douche bag. That's bad customer service on some level, right? Hahah. They lose a star for that. And now...the moment you've been waiting for! The best menu item at Odge's...by far...is their cheese fries. So tasty. The cheese is wonderful and the fries are pure heaven. PURE heaven. 100% heaven. Did I mention they were heaven? Yaaaaah. *drools* These cheesy, oh-so-wrong-and-fattening fries will cure headaches, patch up potholes, win the next alderman election in your ward, AND still have time for high tea with the queen. Now THOSE are some amazing fries!

Yelp
SCREW ODGE AND HIS SECOND RATE HOT DOG STAND. I went at 6:49 on Wed May 13th (They close at 700) and they had locked the doors. I would understand if there was no one in there ordering or eating but there were MULTIPLE customers in the store. If you are going to close early with no regard, why even post hours? I'm sorry but I will NEVER GO THERE AGAIN!
