The Best Restaurants in Ojai, California | Eater LA

"Expect a line out the door at this authentic Mexican restaurant that serves freshly made corn and flour tortillas daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The line moves fast, so grab the al pastor burrito, a favorite of Ojai Quarterly editor, who says his Ojai Tortilla House go-to desk lunch always “feels like a proper break.”" - Meaghan Clark Tiernan

The 15 Best Restaurants & Bars In Ojai

"Anyone visiting from LA is probably not a fan of waiting in line for tacos, but you should sacrifice a little of your vacation time for Ojai Tortilla House anyway. Just off the main street, this tiny shop serves a small menu of tacos, burritos, and quesadillas that you can take with you to the park just down the street. Get here early—they close at 3pm, but they’ll shut down before that if they run out of ingredients. Cash only. " - nikko duren

Google
I love this place. Today I had a Pastor burrito Because I arrived at 1 PM and they had run out of tacos. You’ll have to bring cash although they do have an ATM. Also had a chicken quesadilla today. Yum!

Brandon Thomson (Nine Hauling Inc)

Google
First time trying this place and it was totally worth the hype. Everything was fresh, delicious and surprisingly affordable given the high quality ingredients. They didn't nit-pick if you asked for extra cheese or sour cream and the portions are very generous. You have to try this place!

Google
Large delicious burrito made to order. Great value. Staff a little gruff but I'm happy with my food and experience. There is a tiny counter you could technically stand and eat, but this is a take out place! Note: this is a CASH Only business

Sydni Holifield

Google
I’m telling you right now. You’re going to do yourself a major disservice if you don’t get food here. Have cash, lots of cash because believe me. You want to try everything. Only thing I wish they had is cheese dip to dip stuff in. 10/10. No seating go have a picnic it’s not like the weather isn’t beautiful.

Ezequiel Reyes

Google
Tortilla house is undefeated, they have the best burrito in town, even the veggie is delicious. There only open 3 hours, but man is it totally worth it.

Leslie Brownell

Google
Ojai Tortilla House is my favorite place to stop by for a quick bite in Ojai! Can’t wait for summer to come around so I can eat outside in the warm weather at the park around the corner from them! I always get the asada quesadilla—so flavorful and perfectly cheesy—and a bean and rice burrito for my little one. Highly recommend to anyone who loves tasty, fresh food. 🌮🔥

Richard Peacock

Google
Get your food and go. They quickly run out of your favorite meats . They are only open till they sell out. Reminiscent of the soup Nazi.

Hannah Goldstein

Google
Immediate yes—build your own so the burrito is just perfect. Tortilla is out of this world! 😏

Yelp
The tortilla house is a favorite in our house and among many visiting family and friends over the years when looking for quick casual delicious food! I'm very surprised that I have not yet reviewed this establishment as we live locally and have been coming here regularly for years. Love the homemade tortillas !!!!! The salsa is good, but it does vary from batch to batch, and on more than one occasion I have found the medium to be a little too hot- so now I stick with the mild. The service is friendly and efficient- this is a very fast paced establishment. I definitely recommend this business If you are looking for delicious burritos ,quesadillas, or street taco's . This is a take-out only establishment and is also Cash only-there is often a line but it is well worth the wait!

Yelp
Wish I lived closer. Could possibly go every day. The quality of food, portions and prices are outstanding.

Yelp
This place always has a line out the door during the few hours they are open. And we heard many customers had come from LA and other areas to make the stop at their "favorite burrito/quesadilla" stop. They are quick to move the line along so don't worry about the wait. They keep the little hole in the wall clean and you can see the tortillas being rolled out and made fresh right behind the counter. It's a small but effective operation they run. All the food is simple and authentic. The rice stood out to me as most authentic feeling along with the tortilla. We each got a different item. I got the chicken burrito and we also got a steak burrito. It wasn't "knock your socks off" flavorful or really anything special, it just tasted very fresh and left my tummy feeling very clean with the cabbage contents. It's also nice that they don't overload it with rice and beans and cheese like a lot of other places do. It had a perfect combo of the components. That's the best part about the meal is the clean feeling. Other than that, nothing special besides the small town good people vibe of this little food spot. We also got a steak quesadilla. The difference between the burrito and quesadilla is the quesadilla gets cooked and cheese melted and does not have rice and beans in it. So I'd opt for a burrito so you can get more goodies! But then again, people love those quesadillas on the fresh tortillas. The burrito bowl gets the same amount of ingredients as the burrito minus the home made tortillas, which I'd say is part of the star combo, so maybe save this one for last. The watermelon agua Fresca is delicious and refreshing!

Yelp
Being from LA and also living in SD, I thought I tasted the best of the bests. But Ojai Tortilla House is special. Their specialty taco, which is ginormous, just works perfectly together creating a magic show in your mouth. Highly recommend and can't wait to go back to Ojai just for this place and the book store

Yelp
Excellent food, prices and service! Definitely DO NOT skip this place if you like Mexican food!

Yelp
This place came highly recommended by Emily from Lovewell. And I see why. All that was left was the pastor answered my oh my it was delicious, pastor! I can only imagine how good everything else is when fully stocked up. The place is pretty small, so there is no room to sit and enjoy this yummy food on-site. But it's just as delicious in the car or at home. I tried to go again today, but the line was long. I got a pastor borrito, and my kids got a pastor quesadilla, and they were both SO GOOD!!! I also got the watermelon agua fresca and it was SO refreshing. Like looking a whole into a cold watermelon. YUM! I'm going back for their steak next!

Yelp
One of my favorite places in Ojai. We come here every time we're in town. Wait in the long line, grab a burrito (or tacos) to go, then take it to one of the local wineries (most of them allow you to BYO food). I always get the steak burrito. It's the size of my head. And it's my most fave way to not fit in my pants anymore.

Yelp
Surprisingly open today despite Yelp saying they're closed. Cash only. They offer a handful of options for tacos, burritos or quesadillas. A good handful of toppings that are fresh and large tortillas that look like they mean business. Very small spot. About 5 customers max could probably squeeze in here. They have a fridge of beverages, no indoor or outdoor seating. Plenty of spots to sit around the area however like parks or shopping centers. The burritos we got were fresh, and tasty. I was expecting the tortilla to be chewier in texture but it was soft and fluffy with a slight chew. Good portions of ingredients: protein (chicken, beef, al pastor), beans (refied or black), cabbage, pick de gallo, cilantro, onions, Mexican rice, cheese, salsa (mild, med or hot), guacamole and sour cream. One hefty, beautiful burrito. Definitely a great spot for quality, quick eats.

Yelp
Great little spot close to the rainbow bridge market. Tortillas and all the food and drinks were yummy! Very fast service. Nice people working there! Bring cash! They don't take a card even though Yelp says they do.
google avatar

Qiuyuan C.

Yelp
For tacos and burritos, the prices are not very competitive in general. However, for food in the Ojai area, this is probably one of the cheapest places considering the volume you can get here. I love the ambiance here, it's a small mom and pop shop with a lot of love. Food tastes wise, it's ok. It's not bad but I can get similar quality from Del Taco, but again, this is not about food quality, this is about supporting local businesses.
google avatar

Scott H.

Yelp
Call me amazed and surprised at how good the burritos were. Their chicken burrito was the delicious pork
google avatar

Lucy W. H.

Yelp
These tacos are delicious. Long lines and cash only, but line moves fast. Our faves are steak and chicken tacos. They run out of the small taco tortillas so get there early. The watermelons agua Fresca is refreshing.
google avatar

Lorisa R.

Yelp
This place is so good they take cash only, only open limited times and always a line.....
google avatar

Jamie M.

Yelp
I went here when it was Ruben's, which was also good, but the Tortilla House is amazing! I'm so glad I finally got to try it. The prices are great too. I tried a pastor burrito with everything and was very happy with it. I also bought asada tacos for my parents and burritos for my husband, stepson, and mother-in-law. Everyone was impressed with their food. I loved how fresh the tortillas were. Tips: make sure you have cash, they sell out of taco tortillas early, and they're open everyday but only from 11 am to 2 pm.

Pedro T.

Yelp
Friendly staff, authentic handmade tortillas on the spot. If you're ever around the Ojai area, stop by I recommend.
google avatar

John A.

Yelp
Authentic. Tortillas being made by hand on site. One of the best burritos I've had anywhere in Ventura County. Delicious overall. Great service. Cash only.
google avatar

Holly C.

Yelp
The best burrito I've had in the area. And it's not just because I'm white and have no concept of good burritos, my Mexican husband also loved his. The line went fast- I did feel rushed ordering however since they were so busy. Next time I will take my time to see all the offerings.
google avatar

Matt V.

Yelp
One of the best tortillas and burritos I have ever had. Service was super fast but friendly and you cannot beat seeing family working together for an ambiance. It is a must do.
google avatar

Madison F.

Yelp
I dream about this place. When I'm not in Ojai, I'm thinking about the next time I can get there to have Tortilla House. When I am there, I'm thinking about how many times I can fit it into my trip. When I'm actively eating it, I'm not thinking because I'm in heaven. Y'all need to go.
google avatar

Nathaniel R.

Yelp
I ordered the al pastor burrito with everything on it you can tell it's home made and fresh! got in and out pretty fast so the service was great Definitely coming back for more...
google avatar

Yelp
Oh my god, the Best burritos and Tacos ever had. Absolutely delicious. You must stop by when you are in Ojai or nearby. Family owned friendly Fast service

Yelp
Ojai Tortilla House has the secret code to the burrito world headquarters. The line out front grows rapidly when they open up. Waiting in line moves quick, deciding on the ultimate burrito does take a handful of minutes. Fresh warm tortillas, brilliant choices of ingredients wrapped up for your burrito departure, you will be amazed at the flavors and salsa options. The veggie unit will not disappoint! Chicken or beef selections are lovely. When the tortilla supply runs out you will have to return the next day. Good to meet and discuss the burrito business with brothers and sisters in the brief wait line out front. Do not hesitate here, if you think you know your burrito database think again. Quesadillas kids and other humans will love. Killer tacos too! Don't forget the guacamole or Pico de Gallo on the side, you can select which side. Oh yeah don't forget to order delicious tortillas to take back to the homeland! Enjoy! 104 Signal Street right of

Yelp
I absolutely love their fresh tortillas. The food is always good, and their veggie burrito is delicious. I love their salsas. I could live off their tortillas and salsas.

ShoyBy C.

Yelp
Food was amazing I ordered a Burrito half pastor and half chicken. Rice, Black Beans, and all the sides. Half mild and half hot sauce. With a bottled coke to go! Hit the spot! Drove by to a nearby lake for an amazing ambiance. First off most authentic Mexican food in Ojai! Been to a lot of spots in Ojai and this little hole in the wall is all you need. You're welcomed by amazing workers and great service. They'll take great care of you and prices are very fair for serving sizes. 10/10
google avatar

Rudy B.

Yelp
The food was great tortillas were fresh! Nice little spot. The service was disappointing however. I'm not sure what the deal was with the checker but he was very rude to my guys and barked out someone owes me $50 dollars. We travel around the United States and look for Lil spots like this because they typically have great service and food.. The food was on point unfortunately due to the bad service, we probably won't grab food at the spot anymore. To bad this place has potential.
google avatar

Amy M.

Yelp
Totally worth waiting in line for these delicious burritos. They are truly that good! Highly recommend for a lunch in Ojai.
google avatar

Terry P.

Yelp
Worth it! The line? Funny. Only one customer can go in, so of course there would be a "line." You are greeted when entering. The food preparer asks you for your order. The menu is simple, and to make things quick, please know what you want, it's not hard. You only have a few choices. Come early, because it's first come first serve, and when they run out, they close early. When they sell out of something, it doesn't get replenished. So come early, or lose your choice, either way, the food is fresh, clean, and delicious! Highly recommended. If you eat spicy, their spicy is not very spicy. Their spicy is like a mild for Thai spicy.
google avatar

Lynn R.

Yelp
OK so the place said it was closed on yelp but I didn't believe it so I went there at 11:20 and there were only two people in front of me in line as opposed to yesterday when the line was about 15 people long. I mentioned this to the owner Nico and he said, oh I'm not gonna change it. I'm glad that it says we're close because we have too many people coming anyway so not a problem. Ha ha ha. I couldn't decide which meat I wanted because I'm a big meat eater, so I chose to have a taco with steak and a taco with pork. I had all the fixings put on including guacamole. Yum and I asked him if he put a little bit of their refried beans on it and he did, so I got to try those. I also got the Agua Fresca drink because it was highly recommended. My bill came to $10 and if you don't want to be absolutely stuffed by eating their massive burritos two or three tacos is a good option and you can try all the different meats. Each taco was only 250 and they are about four bites each. I had just finished a long hike so I had a good appetite and the Agua Fresca really hit the spot. I am so glad I ordered it. Do not miss trade this incredible drink. It was so refreshing and just delightful! I decided to have a picnic so I took my food over to the Ohio meadow preserve and found a wonderful bench to sit on and eat it. There's so many nice places around to have a picnic in Ohio. I'm watching two bunnies frolic in the meadow right now. I liked both of the tacos equally so that's good because you can't go wrong. I will definitely eat here again as the food is well priced and delicious and very satisfying after frolicking in nature. So the lesson here is ignore any signs that say that they are closed and try it anyway because maybe you'll get lucky like I did!

Yelp
What? It's only open for 5 hours a day? Cash only? I was pretty ready to write this place off as having the hype of artificial scarcity surrounding it. I'd been to Ojai more than a few times and passed by quite a bit when there was a line and later in the day after they had already closed. So, I got up early so I could go to the Tortilla House when they opened, half prepared to be disappointed. When I arrived there was a deceptively long line (6ft apart) but it moved pretty quickly and I got the burrito with the recommended al pastor and I got the watermelon agua fresca. While I was waiting I watched the tortillas being made in the back half of the space. So, you see the 5 and obviously know that I loved it. I didn't think a fresh tortilla would make any sort of difference but does it ever! There a nice breadiness to it that I hadn't really experienced before. The al pastor was also delicious, not overly seasoned but the meat was flavored well. The watermelon agua fresca though-I usually find watermelon flavored items to fall into two categories: 1) naturally flavored but weak or 2) tons of flavor but obviously through artificial means. The agua fresca here has a sweetness to it but is also naturally light, it finds that balance. I don't know how they do it but they do. They could rename themselves the Ojai Agua Fresca house and just serve that and it would still get 5 stars.
google avatar

Michael O.

Yelp
Really nice burritos, flour tortilla chips. Beef, chicken, and al pastor (which was gone). Agua fresca de sandia. No down home meats like tripas or cabeza. "Ojai is not ready for that" said the counterman. Why not, someone would love it. Would go back, for sure.
google avatar

Teresa B.

Yelp
The line was out the door (mind you it's a small spot), but it was good food and the service was quick. Kind of like a chipotle line up because everything was ready to be assembled. They give a great portion of meat on their street tacos. We got the Al pastor street tacos with mild and medium sauce. The medium definitely had some heat. The tacos were good, maybe not the BEST we've eaten in CA, but definitely worth eating again when you want a quick bite.
google avatar

Alison W.

Yelp
Had to stop by the Ojai Tortilla House to check out the burritos. Good food, but the real star was the tortilla! Such a good flour tortilla and reasonably priced. They close at 2pm and are cash only and no seating. But take your food across the street and enjoy in the park!
google avatar

Billy M.

Yelp
Awesome food! Need to stay open longer! Owner has a chip on his shoulder and only wears one glove on his hand and the gloveless hand is all over the food!
google avatar

Nick S.

Yelp
Absolutely best Mexican food at the best price in Ojai. I always go here whenever I'm in Ojai. Cash only.
google avatar

Nick S.

Yelp
Straight forward place. Quick & Friendly service. Simple menu which eliminates wondering what you want. Best burrito I've ever had. Ever.
google avatar

Lisa W.

Yelp
The hype is real for Ojai Tortilla House. Yes the tortillas hecho a mano are BOMB. The meat is high quality. The salsa (comes in three levels of heat) is flavorful. The servings are massive. And the price is right. I had the al pastor burrito, which was MASSIVE, and finished it in one sitting because it was so good. I am from LA and used to great tacos and burritos. I consider the ones here to be VERY GOOD. This place is cash only. They have an ATM inside (but it was out of service when I went!). They are only open until about 2PM and often run out of food before then. When I went, they were out of all meat except Al Pastor (which was still bomb). Definitely go here and go early.
google avatar

Piccolena T.

Yelp
Easily the best place to eat in ojai. Really the only place we look forward eating at when we are in town.
google avatar

Leslie Y.

Yelp
One of the best hole in the wall shops I've visited, Ojai Tortilla House's main draw is the home-made tortilla. I got an asada taco and a pastor taco, and they're flavorful and filled to the brim with meat. The watermelon agua fresca was refreshing and amazing too. They only have one flavor of agua fresca, but I am glad I tried it instead of my usual horchata. This place gets busy. I thought I was early on a Saturday at 11:30 am, but there was already a line outside when I arrived because they only allow one customer inside the store to order. The food is well worth the wait.
google avatar

Weston B.

Yelp
Al pastor burrito was the bomb not much else to say go check it out! They are cash only

Blake S.

Yelp
After hearing so many great things about this place me and my wife went to try it and it was nothing short of amazing. I got a pastor burrito and my wife got a chicken quesadilla. While I preferred the quesadilla, both were well worth the wait. They always have a line out of the building. This restaurant is a must try while you are visiting Ojai.
google avatar

Scott T.

Yelp
Awesome food - definitely worth waiting in line - we were in town for the Ojai art in the park
google avatar

Jake S.

Yelp
Food is 5 star. Service has gone DOWNHILL. Looks like ego is getting to their heads. Not only can these folks not maintain consistent hours, staff has attitudes and know nothing about being hospitable to their customers. Guy making tacos in the front should ease up a little. Maybe bad day, maybe stressed about other things. No need to scream if you ran out of tacos, or can't wipe or clean your tongs that you're cross contaminating the other meats in. Plenty of vegetarians who don't want specks of meat in their burrito or folks who eat certain meats and allergic to others. Smile a little. Relax. Its good for your health. Guy in front + Cashier need to go. Looks like plenty of reviews have noted the same. Aunties and chefs in the back doing the real work - still got love for ya.
google avatar

Anita L.

Yelp
They have the best tortillas I have ever eaten. Their refried beans are scrumptiously delicious. Their quesadillas are chock full of veggies and the flavors burst in your mouth. The bean and cheese burrito is an experience that should not be missed. It's family run and while there is almost always a line, it is completely worth the wait. You can take your food with you to Libbey park to have a lovely picnic in the park and enjoy an awesome meal in ojai.
google avatar

Natalie S.

Yelp
The burritos are perfect! Quesadillas are great too, but the flour tortilla on the burrito is where it's the best. Cash only, and they have an ATM inside if needed.
google avatar

Sylvia Y.

Yelp
There was a line out the door even 15 minutes before closing. Was craving al pastor but they only had chicken left. I got the chicken burrito. They were super efficient and the burrito was hefty and delicious. There's no seating inside or outside, so we took our food to a nearby park. Cash only. Great spot if you're looking for something quick, cheap, and on the go.
google avatar

Paulette C.

Yelp
We were visiting Ojai and kept passing by this place that had long lines daily. I asked if it was good and people in line said,"the best"! We got in the huge line and made friends with the ladies in front of us. They are from Ojai and often visit this restaurant. They said the guy that usually assembles the food was not there. That was the reason the line was slow moving. It took us about an hour but the wait was worth it! It's all to go and cash only. We took our 2 burritos, 1 quesadilla, 1 taco and an aqua Fresca to some nearby tables and chairs. They hand make corn and flour tortillas. The portions are plentiful. I dove into the asada taco with cilantro and ate every morsel. YUMMM. Next I took a bite of my asada burrito. YUMMMM. Lastly, I ate half of my asada quesadilla. YUMMMMM. They offer quesadillas with the same toppings as a burrito. I chose cabbage, cilantro and the salsa on the side. The aqua Fresca tastes like you are biting into a slice of watermelon. I read reviews that said they could open up a store to just sell that! Ojai is very fortunate to have this "hole in the wall" authentic Mexican restaurant! Please tip them $5 or more, like we did, so they can ring the bell and bring smiles to their hard working faces!
google avatar

Susan S.

Yelp
Yummmm Their burrito was so good. And the tortilla! It's homemade and hand rolled. So soft and delicious. We got it to go and so the burrito was about 20 minutes old, but the tortilla did not harden at all, which was amazing. The hours are like 11-3 only, so you need to pay attention to when they're open. Also cash only. When we went, there were a couple of people in front of us, but within 10 min, about 15 people were in line. But it moves super fast with the guy churning out burritos and quesadillas with the speed of lightning. Def going back if I ever make it to Ojai again.
google avatar

Nina R.

Yelp
When in Ojai, stop at the Ojai Tortilla House. This is my version of "when in Rome." The food is super, and worth standing in line for. You can tell that it's all freshly made by people who know what they're doing. They do not skimp on toppings / fillings, which makes for a rather outstanding culinary experience. Guac in particular is delicious.
google avatar

Robert H.

Yelp
I was in Ojai this past week and stop off at this great Taco restaurant and was amazed how much food they gave me and tasty. The price is very fair for the amount of food they give you. Next time I am in Ojai I will definitely stop by and get more food
