Shuko Review - Union Square - New York - The Infatuation

"On East 12th Street just below Union Square, there’s a big, unmarked black door with a bouquet of dried flowers instead of a sign. Open the door and get past the velvet curtain, and you’ll find a narrow room filled with a rectangular sushi bar where 20 people sit ready to spend many hundreds of dollars watching one of the best restaurant games in the city. Everywhere you look, there’s action. One chef is slicing immaculate pieces of trout and snapper and orata, another’s searing tuna with smoking coals, another is scraping meat off fish skeletons, and all of them are making constant calls to ensure that every person around that bar is happy. This is Shuko, the Japanese restaurant where dinner at the sushi bar is like sitting courtside. Courtside seats are a sign that you’ve made it. You get to watch every play up-close, feel like the V.I.P. that you are, and also see Turtle from Entourage, while pretending you don’t care that you see Turtle from Entourage. But you don’t need $10,000 worth of Knicks tickets to get that experience. You just need to go to Shuko. Let us be clear. Shuko is expensive. Not ten grand expensive, but the omakase starts at $270 per person. Once you factor in everything else, this is at least a $350 meal. But if you’re looking to have an incredible special occasion meal, and are able to pay for it, you should book a few seats here. Most people here are celebrating something—birthdays, anniversaries, or Tuesdays. The courtside restaurant life is a party. A party where you have your own personal sushi chef, where your sake or cocktail glass is never empty, and where the music, never too loud, moves from Lauryn Hill to Wu Tang Clan to A Tribe Called Quest to Biggie. We’re not sure a piece of toro will ever taste as good as it did here, while listening to "Juicy." But nothing—not the chefs, the soundtrack, or the couple next to you trying to decide whether they should let their travel agent choose their vacation chateau—can distract you from the reason you’re here: the sushi. The omakase starts with three small prepared dishes, and then moves on to 18 of some the best bites of fish we’ve eaten. There’s stuff like kanpachi, snapper, ocean trout, and uni—standards, only in the sense that you’ve maybe seen them before. That ocean trout is topped with a sliver jalapeño, and the uni from Santa Barbara will wipe away every other piece of uni from your memory. There are also signature Shuko pieces, like the suji, a piece of grilled tuna topped with bird’s eye chili and scallion, wrapped in crisp seaweed—as well as seasonal specials, like fried cod sperm topped with shaved truffle. You’re going to want seconds and thirds of both. After the omakase, ice cream will arrive. You’ll eat it in a few bites, but you won’t be ready to leave. Maybe you don’t want your birthday to be over, maybe you need a few more minutes to process what’s happened to you over the past two hours, or maybe you still haven’t figured out whether that really is Turtle over on the other side of the bar. All of these are reasons to order one last thing from the limited supplement menu. This is your final reward for the life choices that have brought you to Shuko—a restaurant that will never disappoint. Unlike the Knicks. Food Rundown Omakase This is the reason you come to Shuko. It’s 18 pieces of some of the best fish you’ll ever eat—like toro, striped amberjack, Santa Barbara uni, scallop, bluefin tuna, orata, fluke, glass shrimp, and two kinds of snapper, among many others. Also typically included are Shuko signatures like the suji, a one-bite handroll of grilled tuna and bird’s eye chili." - Katherine Lewin

A & B Life Adventures

My wife and I went to Oku on a Friday with a family member that was in town and we had an exceptional experience. This was our second time there and experience was just as great as the first. The staff were very friendly, especially our server Sarah, who gave awesome service. They have many great drink selections. The food is fantastic. As an appetizer, we tried the shrimp gyoza, which was very tasty. All the sushi we ate was delicious. The fresh ingredients, combined with excellent preparation created for superb sushi. Our favorite rolls were the “Everybody Loves Ramon” and the “Crouching Tiger.” The restaurant has a prime location. I recommend to make a reservation, so you can sit upstairs overlooking beachside Santa Barbara. Oku is a great place to go for a date night. We definitely will be back again to explore the other dishes on the menu.

Google
Service: disappointed. The staff who led the way to our seats was very careless and just throw the menus on the table and took off. The staff who served our table is relatively welcoming even though it was the dinner peak time, but she introduced menu to other customers beside us which makes us quite unattended. Food: Kudo to the chef! From appetizer to sushi rolls, the flavors are so balanced and phenomenal! The Lava Roll is the right amount of spiciness (though we’re told it’s a 8.5/10 spicy level, for Asian it’s piece of cake haha). The 805 Roll is on the sweet side and the shiso definitely brings out the freshness. Ambiance: sadly the rooftop has a larger party so we weren’t able to get a seat, but the ambiance is pretty nice and chill.

Google
One of my new favorite restaurants in Santa Barbara! We loved that some of the drinks were served in an adorable lucky cat mug that you can even purchase (available in white, sage or pink- your choice!) The sushi was stellar and I loved the spicy salmon roll! I also recommend the miso soup. And to top it off, the beautiful ocean view just across the way. If you have a larger group I would make a reservation. Can’t wait to come back!

Google
Holy cow!!! I have been here once before and I remembered it being good so I came back, and it is just as good as i remembered if not better. The food takes a second to come out, but I think it was due to short staff. Our waitress looked pretty busy. The dessert was amazing, the atmosphere was great, and for an elevated experience restaurant, it wasn't super expensive. Apparently it's a very popular spot, and I can see why. Must go if you enjoy sushi, but they have more than that here.

Google
An upscale Japanese with beautiful view (especially if you get 2nd floor patio). The foods are extremely delicious. Of course the portions are smaller than usual Japanese restaurant but the quality speaks for the difference

Google
Service was amazing. Food was excellent! I’ve been on the lookout for good sushi restaurants. This is the only sushi restaurant I like so far. Their rolls are perfectly sized and they don’t put too much rice, compared to other restaurants - which is perfect. Our server was Kevin and everything he recommended was great.

Google
Amazing sushi, great service, and beautiful view. We got the salmon sashimi carpaccio with classic yuzu sauce, everybody loves Raymond roll, and 805 roll. All three tasted excellent and were super fresh.

The best sushi in my life. The service was nice and food was perfect

Yelp
I come to Santa Barbara just to eat at Oku, it's that good. The vibes here are immaculate, the service is top-tier, and the food? Absolutely phenomenal. If you're looking for a restaurant that delivers on all fronts, this is it. Our server, Sarah, was amazing! She went above and beyond to make sure we had a fantastic experience. We even came back later to pick up lunch, and she personally delivered our order to our car. That kind of service is rare and so appreciated! Now, let's talk about the Hot Ramen Soup; if you haven't tried it, you are seriously missing out. It's one of my absolute favorites on the menu, and I will never stop recommending it. Rich, flavorful, and beyond satisfying. Whether you're a local or just visiting, don't sleep on Oku. It's truly the best of the best!

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday afternoon and was able to get a table without a reservation. We were happy to get a table, but the table was in an awkward spot on the patio where there was a big post obstructing the view. I feel bad for whoever makes a reservation and gets stuck with that table. We ordered the saigon wings, fried california roll, firecracker shrimp and the LAVA roll. We also ordered the lychee mezcal margarita and oku POG. Out of the food the saigon wings were definitely the best. It was also the best deal because it was happy hour. The wings had a nice crunch with a tasty sweet glaze. The firecracker shrimp were meh. Nothing "firecracker" about it. Just little tempura shrimps with spicy mayo and a balsamic sauce on the side. Glad we paid a little less for this because of the happy hour. The rolls were both pretty good. The fried california roll was solid. Nothing special, but was good. The lava roll's description made us think it was going to be super spicy, but the spicy level was pretty mild. I liked the red roe on top. Out of the drinks the lychee mezcal margarita was much better than the oku pog. The Oku Pog just tasted like a screwdriver. I wouldn't consider it a crafted cocktail. I don't recommend this drink. On the other hand, the lychee mezcal margarita was really good! And was also on the happy hour menu! Our server was nice, but I would have to note that there is a bit of a wait for sushi. The hostesses had no idea if it was happy hour and left it to the waiter to know whether or not it was. I don't even work there but after eating there I still remember that it is Fri-Sun 3-5pm and Mon-Thur 4-6pm.

Yelp
Ideally I'd give this place 3.5 stars! We had our anniversary dinner here after so many of our friends recommended it. We had a reservation for Saturday 7pm on the patio, and at that point it was too dark to see the ocean but it's still a cute restaurant! Seemed a little more casual than I anticipated, some customers showed up in pajama pants. It was really busy so our server didn't check up on us often, but nothing to complain about. We ordered a couple rolls (I forgot their names sorry), Toro nigiri and uni nigiri. The uni was definitely the highlight, we ordered extra. It was so fresh and sweet, the best we've ever had. My boyfriend and I love splurging a little bit on good sushi, and this place was reasonably priced.

Yelp
Wowow. Everything was so delicious and fresh. Sarah was such a friendly and helpful waitress, we loved her! The restaurant has a large sake list, we also enjoyed the Lychee Martini. Food wise- every thing we got was great. If you like crispy rice- highly recommend. We got 3 rolls and could t decide which was the best, I think you really can't go wrong! We liked everything so much that we back before our car ride home to get some food to go. Make sure to stop here when in the Funk Zone!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I had a lovely experience at Oku! We came for dinner on a Saturday night and were lucky there was no wait. Nice ambiance for an intimate date and excellent service. We started with the red lily cocktails which were delicious and strong. Food-wise, we ordered the otoro sashimi, the Crazy Rich Asians roll, the Everybody Loves Raymond roll, and some uni spoons. The otoro was immaculate! So buttery it just melts in your mouth. The rolls were unique and flavorful. Santa Barbara's uni is also so creamy and sweet; very fun to enjoy in the spoons they serve them in with some ponzu!

Yelp
Everyone raves about this place but honestly the food was mid and took forever to come out.

Yelp
Oku has a prime location right along Cabrillo Boulevard, just steps from the beach, which makes it a fantastic spot for a meal with a view. The valet parking is a nice touch and super convenient, especially since parking in the area can be tricky. When it comes to the food, the Crispy Korean Cauliflower is a standout -- perfectly seasoned and a fun twist on a classic. I also really enjoyed the cucumber-wrapped lollipops, which are essentially a low-carb sushi roll without rice. They're fresh, light, and absolutely delicious. That said, while the quality and flavors are undeniable, the prices are on the higher side. As a local, I don't frequent Oku often, as there are other sushi spots in Santa Barbara that I feel offer better value without sacrificing taste. Overall, Oku is a great choice for special occasions or if you're looking to enjoy sushi in a beautiful beachfront setting, but it might not be your go-to for an everyday sushi fix.

Yelp
Everything was super scrumptiously delicious. You can feel the ocean breeze if you sit in the patio and watch the cars go by. Service was pretty good even though for some reason it took awhile to get anything at first. We had the crispy Korean cauliflower and the Saigon wings to start off and let me tell you ...both choices were amazing! The cauliflower are little bites that just melt in your mouth and the wings were perfectly spiced. We also had the sashimi tacos which were also delectable and we ended with some rolls that didn't disappoint. Writing this review is making my mouth water just thinking of the food.

Yelp
Wild mushroom roll, Vegetarian rainbow roll and edamame, slightly altered to accommodate the 2 vegans. The Celiac dining companion shared the edamame and had a Yakisoba dish with rice noodles and the spicy flying Newton roll. We all very much enjoyed our dinner, the atmosphere and the service. Our server, Peter, was very knowledgeable about which items were vegan or could be made vegan AND which items were gluten free or could be altered to make them so. Will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Very nice service, great view of the bay, the fish was good, but the nori used was stale and hard to bite through. If they'd fix their nori, I'd give it four stars. As is, won't be back here again.
google avatar

Rene R.

Yelp
This place is by far the BEST SUSHI I've ever had! Stumbled across it by sheer luck but didn't regret one single drink or bite. The flavors were decadent and rich but satisfying. Everything we ordered was 5/5. Can't wait to come back to Oku. I love the lighting and open balcony area. It's a great vibe. Everyone was helpful with their recommendations when I asked for great tasting and aesthetically pleasing. Hah highly recommend everyone to try Oku.
google avatar

dalia b.

Yelp
Oku sushi has great views of the ocean, and good sushi. the spicy tuna crispy rice and flying newton roll were highlights on the menu! the edamame was also very good. service was a little slow.
google avatar

Maya S.

Yelp
My new favorite sushi spot in Santa Barbara. The rolls were immaculate and fresh. Every roll we tried, we LOVED. The quality is unbeatable. My partner and I love salmon belly sushi and just look at the beautiful marbling of the fish. So we definitely indulged in multiple orders of it! Arigato used to be our favorite spot, but now that we found Oku, it has it's competitors running for their money. We will definitely be here again, and again... and again!
google avatar

Jack L.

Yelp
Good food with mediocre service. They have free valet parking, which is nice. But they have too many guests and not enough waiters to attend to them.
google avatar

Lorrie M.

Yelp
Absolutely loved our dinner at Oku celebrating a birthday because it was dog friendly! Their patio is spectacular because there are plenty of spaces if you bring a furry friend, and while SB isn't necessarily cold, in the winter at night they have ample heat lamps. Honestly, I don't think much about the quality of fish or sushi at places like this because it seems pretty fusion driven and the menu is huge, so its hard to gauge whether or not it would be good. Boy! I was wrong, the fish quality here is pretty top notch and everything came out really fresh and delicious. We mainly had nigiris and the toro was SUPERB melt in your mouth. Definitely great staff, dog friendly, AND great sushi. Will be coming back again for sure.
google avatar

Michelle H.

Yelp
We sat outside at night and they a nice view overlooking the ocean with heaters. The fatty tuna nigiri was my favorite! The tuna melted in my mouth and tasted fresh. For rolls we ordered crazy rich Asians, 805 roll, and everybody loves Raymond. Out of the three, crazy rich Asians was the best! But it was fairly expensive for the roll, its priced MSP and was priced $40 when we went.
google avatar

Stan W.

Yelp
Many times when dining on/near State St., the experience can be expensive and overrated. So when our group of 8 come by on a Saturday and I was really surprised with the great service and food/beverage! We dined on the upper terrace with great views of the ocean. With a group of 8 hungry diners, we basically went family style on almost every roll on the menu. Spicy tuna and the 805 were very popular rolls for our table. I really enjoyed the Crouching Tiger roll myself but you really couldn't go wrong with anything on the menu. Drinks were plentiful and the waitress kept our glasses full. I had a couple of Oku Pogs served in a very appropriate lucky cat mug. Overall Oku was a big hit with our group. Definitely coming back in the near future!

Yelp
Exceptional Experience at Oku on New Year's Eve! We celebrated New Year's Eve at Oku, and it was an unforgettable experience! The ambiance was perfect for the occasion, but what truly stood out was the impeccable service provided by Jason. He was attentive, knowledgeable, and made excellent recommendations that enhanced our evening. Jason's expertise with the menu and wine pairings was impressive, and his friendly demeanor made us feel genuinely cared for. He went above and beyond to ensure our evening was special, and even when my husband tried to slip him some extra cash as a thank-you, he remained humble and gracious. The food was phenomenal, the drinks were expertly curated, and the service made it all the more memorable. We will definitely return and hope to see Jason again, he's a true asset to Oku!
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
Was very disappointed in the snow crab sushi roll. It was hard, if that makes sense. Did not have a good mouthfeel. I've truly had better sushi at Whole Foods deli market, no joke! I am not picky with sushi either. Another big bummer is that they wouldn't sit us in the rooftop even though we made a reservation for the patio/outside. So just be aware. I would go back just have wine and maybe some appetizers. They also offer some half bottle of wines, which are better than some of the offering by glass. Also, a better deal.
google avatar

Andrew V.

Yelp
I found this amazing restaurant while on vacation in Santa Barbara. My wife enjoyed the experience we loved the food and we will definitely come back every time we are in Santa Barbara
google avatar

Jill S.

Yelp
EDIT: the owner reached out and said I didn't like the California Roll wasn't made with mayo, however that's incorrect, rice was hard! I have had it before without mayo and and was excited to order it with it omitted. We made reservations on open table and requested outdoor patio.Assumed it was on rooftop,it was not. Dishes ordered snow crab rolls,Cadillac rolls, few vegan rolls.Everything was good except snow crab rolls were horrible. It was nice sitting on (lower) patio and received excellent service. We were all very disappointed didn't get rooftop seating. I'd only go back for that and maybe just few appetizers and drinks.
google avatar

Mailani S.

Yelp
The setting was great and the food was decent as well, but a little unusual. We were sitting outside which had an amazing view but it smelled strongly of gas from the heating lamps. Overall it was good but I might be more selective of what I order next time.
google avatar

Tahmina S.

Yelp
We came here last night with a group of 10 + the birthday girl. It did take them 20 minutes to seat us even though we had reservations. We spent quite a bit, you would've thought that the dessert brought out for the birthday girl would be covered? That would've been nice. I will give it one more shot some time, maybe this time with a smaller group.
google avatar

Carrisa J.

Yelp
Honestly, if we're speaking of the food, it's okay at best. The best part of the experience is the views and the atmosphere, but not really much of anything else. We ordered a roll and the seaweed was so chewy that it took a whiiiile to swallow and enjoy. The yakisoba was lacking a lot of flavor. Because we weren't too satisfied with what we ordered, we tried ordering another roll but it took way too long that we didn't even want it anymore. Overall, the views are honestly what is keeping this place open and poppin. The food, on the other hand, is very questionable.
google avatar

Parag B.

Yelp
The service is excellent! We got outdoor seating to enjoy the view. Food was delicious and a bit pricy. It's great for large families. You can get anything from the menu, and it will be delicious!
google avatar

Kevin D.

Yelp
The service was terrible! We went on a Saturday night and had to wait forever for the food . The sushi was mediocre at best !
google avatar

Susan A.

Yelp
Enjoyed a lovely sushi dinner here while on a recent trip to Santa Barbara. We got four rolls and 2 nigiri which was just right for our group of three. Negi toro was a good choice as was sunrise roll and the spicy yellowtail. We had a fourth roll which was also delish that had fish and shrimp inside and avocado on top. So good. Many of the rolls seem over the top both in ingredients and price tho the former is personal preference. We tried two desserts-lemon tarts and chocolate cake. Neither was a standout. Service was good. When we left at 6:30 the place was full. They have an extensive non-sushi menu as well
google avatar

Mikala C.

Yelp
We came here for a light dinner, ocean views, and some fresh sushi rolls. We ordered the rainbow roll, sunrise roll, and the pear salad. The salad was delicious-- so many textures with the crunchy rice and soft lettuce. The rolls were just okay. I could tell the fish was very fresh but I like more creative rolls (and rolls without tempura in them). I went to one place that added lemon and cucumber in the rolls and now I can never go back. Would love them to explore adding those flavors too. Thank you for the great evening!
google avatar

Amber E.

Yelp
Still our favorite sushi place in Santa Barbara. This time we were on our own, so decided to try a few new things. Firecracker Rock shrimp - crispy tempura w/ sriracha and a tamarind dipping sauce - amazing. Sashimi Caroaccio w/ yellowtail or Big Eye tina in garlic ponzu sauce - wow. Then, Lava Roll w/ big eye tuna, shrimp tempura, roasted Serrano, avocado, sriracha aioli, topped w/ yellowtail, cilantro, shaved red onion, wasabi aioli, and to Biko on torched spicy Gochujang - oh my goodness, spicy deliciousness! Had a Hidden Dragon martini w/ Thai chili infused tequila, lime, contreau, lychee lacquer, and half black salt rim - fabulous. Love this place!
google avatar

Sam K.

Yelp
Really cute ambiance and service is great! I sat outside for dinner and had a really nice view of the boardwalk. I got the tuna crispy rice and way of the dragon roll, which were both delicious. The sushi roll had a very unique flavor with the cream cheese in it. I also got a summer plum wine spritz as my drink. It was similar to an aperol spritz but it had kinsen plum wine instead and was sweeter. I enjoyed my dinner here and would definitely come back.
google avatar

Sesang Y.

Yelp
My friend and I went to Oku because we wanted something that wasn't tacos! We honestly didn't have high expectations thinking it was one of those places more known for their beach view than their food, but goodness was I sooooo wrong. The rolls were immaculate. We got the Crispy Korean Cauliflower as an appetizer, which I'd give it a 7-8/10 as a Korean hahaha but the ROLLS....!!! - Crazy Rich Asians Rolls: 9.8/10 - Scallops Roll (I forget the exact name): 10/10 It was actually my first time trying scallops, and I'm in love now.
google avatar

Anna O.

Yelp
I love the seating and patio area looking at the beach! The service was good although they did get one of our orders incorrect at first, quickly fixed the issue. Quality food, but a bit overpriced, basically paying for the view. I would recommend this place for a date night! My favs were the truffle gyoza and otoro nigiri.
google avatar

Ronika S.

Yelp
We've been here a few times and twice Peter has been our server. He's incredibly kind, and helps you out with your order as much as possible and always has great recommendations. He picked up on the fact that I was gluten free without me mentioning it and helped me with different options and helped make adjustments to our rolls. Service here is always great and food is wonderful. Thank you!!
google avatar

Amanda G.

Yelp
Amazing view! Even though it was 8p, the glimmer of light off the ocean near the pier from the rooftop was such a beautiful view. The rooftop is large enough where you don't feel like you're on top of the table next to you. The server was friendly as was all the staff that we got to encounter. They were quick bringing us our food and paid attention when the plates were empty to take them away. The Otoro was beyond mouthwatering. I could've eaten it all night! The snow crab hand roll was so tasty as was the carpaccio and the Mike Wazawski. I look forward to coming back!
google avatar

Christine L.

Yelp
This place is 100% worth the hype! We sat on the rooftop and it had amazing views. The food was absolutely amazing. My favorite was the "crazy rich asian" roll. It had wagu beef and lobster in it. It was so delicious! The service was also top notch. We asked our waitress for recommendations on the menu and everything we got was delicious!

Ken D.

Yelp
Oku has been amazing since it opened. We are locals and have been there many times. The atmosphere, the service, and the food are always perfect, every time. I give a five star review easily. However, EVERY time we have gone there we have been polluted by cologne on the bus staff so heavily that we have to have it clear before we can taste our food. And we always eat outside! Please management... no one in the food service industry should be allowed to wear overwhelming scents. That said, we will be back and back again.
google avatar

Shell B.

Yelp
The ambiance and view were both spectacular. The food was good, but nothing special. Our server was good, but also nothing special.
google avatar

Kayla Z.

Yelp
Came in for a small bite to eat with my boyfriend and we got seated on the roof which had such a beautiful view. Andrea was our waitress and she was fantastic! She helped give us recommendations that would accommodate our dietary restrictions and they were all amazing! We started offf with the shishito peppers and they were really tasty! It was a fun game to see who got a spicy one! We also got the salmon lollipop which was so amazing! The albacore carpaccio with the truffle soy which was my favorite!!the blue fin sashimi was so refreshing!
google avatar

Kristina M.

Yelp
Loved the decor inside AND that the outdoor patio was heated, as our reservation was for outdoor seating on a windy Saturday night. The sushi was pretty good! Many options for maki and not overly inflated for the price. My 2 friends and I shared the 805 Roll, Mike Wazowski, and Spicy Flying Newton - all 3 being delicious. I also enjoyed the Red Lily cocktail - it had a strong lychee flavor, but was almost the same price as one of the rolls. Service was polite, but it was a busy night, so food took a little long.
google avatar

Jiemei G.

Yelp
Loved it went w elderly and kids. Everyone was so kind and attentive. We got the scallop and yellowtail carpaccio, the Raymond roll and the one w Serrano (loved it so much). The rock shrimp was delicious too and they can accommodate gluten free as well! They gave us a comfortable booth and the girls got chopstick helpers as well as wikisticks. Easy street parking too
google avatar

Jessica K.

Yelp
I will say, I wish I could have given 3.5 stars. The ambiance is lovely. The view of the beach, the heat lamps. The service was great. The hostess was kind, and the server was nice and helpful and smiled very kindly. The food was just. Food. I was not blown away, but I wasn't disgusted. The gyoza was supposed to be shrimp and crab, but didn't taste anything but shrimp. And the dumpling wrapper was falling off immediately after picking up the shrimp. Maybe we chose the wrong rolls, but they were fine. I guess the price you pay is for the vibes.
google avatar

Katelyn G.

Yelp
We ordered the 805, crouching tiger, spider and piranha rolls! All great, would recommend
google avatar

Saira S.

Yelp
Food is above average and my family particularly enjoyed the crispy Korean cauliflower and the everybody loves Raymond roll since we like it a little spicy! Restaurant is in a prime location right off the beach boardwalk. Service is also really friendly! Their is a weird strong fishy/sewer smell though when you enter the restaurant that doesn't seem to go away much.

Mikaela C.

Yelp
Love this place my boyfriend and I came across this place randomly and it's one of our favorite restaurants to eat at in Santa Barbara. Anytime we have family visit this is where we go! The food is delicious. The location is great and the service is amazing! Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Ali V.

Yelp
Rooftop dining with a nice ocean view and terrific food... what more could you ask for? The edamame and spicey dipping sauce that came with it was a big hit; the sauce was a table favorite and we asked for more so we could have it with our rolls as well. The miso soup was delicious. The Lava roll was terrific and spicy! The garlic filet mignon was tender and tasty. My wife appreciated the gluten free menu options (ask the server for help on this). We shared the blended Zinfandel, which was surprisingly good! Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant. Make reservations and ask for the rooftop seating.

Yelp
Made reservations for 2 @ 5:45pm on a Sunday a week before the reservation. We arrived at 5pm and they were able to seat us earlier than our reservation time. Parking is pretty limited around the restaurant, but they have complimentary Valet parking in the back. The restaurant has a cool vibe to it. Lots of tables inside and outside. We were seated outside during a storm, but luckily they had covers and heaters! We were served by Peter. He was really friendly and gave great recommendations. Thanks for the fantastic service, Peter! The food overall was amazing! Highly recommend the dishes below. We tried: - OTORO Sashimi - HON MAGURO Sashimi - CRAZY RICH ASIANS (MP: $38) - RAINBOW ROLL - SALMON LOLLIPOPS - UNI SPOON (MP: $16) We also ordered the XO Grilled Shrimp over Garlic Noodles. This dish would've been perfect if the noodles had a stronger garlic flavor and if they had bigger shrimp or more shrimp. This dish is what prevented me from rating this place 5 stars. Overall, a solid Japanese restaurant with decent prices.

Yelp
Delicious, fresh sushi!! The ambiance here is great and the location is beautiful, especially if you get a patio seat as it overlooks the ocean. Fish is so fresh and the rolls were soooo yummy. Tried uni for the first time here!! We got 2 cocktails, one being served in a lucky cat!!! It was so cute (very expensive) but we wanted to have a memento to take home to remember our trip. Service was nice and fast. 100% I would come back and I'd bring people with me to try the delicious sushi from here.

Yelp
Boyfriend and I ate dinner here while visiting Santa Barbara. For an appetizer, we got the crispy korean cauliflower. It was VERY DELICIOUS. The flavor was definitely there, and it was so tasty with a kick of spice. Would definitely recommend! The sushi was pretty solid. I love my sushi and cocktail that I got. My suishi had cream cheese, so it was very creamy and when it combined with the fish, it was very flavorful. My boyfriend also loved his sushi roll. He says it was unique in flavor, but it was definitely spicy. The service was average. It was very busy, so i can understand a bit of a wait time. We had a very nice dinner this night :) Would recommend!

Yelp
For a special occasion, Oku is the spot in Santa Barbara to celebrate with a meal. We reserved ahead of time for a spot on the rooftop patio, and the staff had the very middle table ready for us along the wall for a view of the beach & Stearns Wharf. Star of the show: Crispy Korean Cauliflower. You absolutely have to try this. Crispy on the outside, soft but still has some bite on the inside. The sauce isn't too spicy or sweet, just right. The XO grilled shrimp were good, but the garlic noodles aren't anything special. The Uni Spoon's market pricing was $16 at the time, and I had no regrets splurging on it. I'm not sure if I was supposed to pick up the Uni pieces 1 by 1 or not, but I downed the entire spoon in 1 go. Delicious!
