For the ambiance, it is five stars. For the service, it is five stars. For the entrees, it is three stars. For the creativity of the menu, it is two stars. For the appetizers and starters, it is four stars. For the price point, it is two stars. Hence, I ended up at four stars overall!
The location in Old Town Scottsdale (steps away from the Hotel Valley Ho) cannot be beaten. This is a perfect location in the heart of Old Town. When you enter the garden, you feel like you are being transported to a different world. Even in the thick of an Arizona summer, the outdoor misters work well! Of course, it's a perfect excuse to order another margarita or two. (Side note: add draft beer). While the margaritas are photogenic, I just didn't taste much tequila in them.
Our server was friendly and efficient, despite having many tables to work himself. He was on top of his game.
The entrees were OK but at their prices, we left underwhelmed. The ancho ribs were tender but lacked a memorable flavor. The penne chicken was a huge portion but was oddly flavored and had WAY too much sauce. The tortilla soup was just OK and a bit runny. The starters on the other hand were great. The chips, salsa, and guacamole were so delicious that we ordered two sets.
In the end, would I recommend Old Town Tortilla Factory? Yes, but with a caveat. Don't come here for your main meal. Come for some drinks and starters. Get a photo near the fountain in the courtyard. Look at the trees with the lanterns. Post on Instagram. Start your evening here. Then move on. Old Town Tortilla Factory is capable of executing a better menu and I hope they do so in the future. The current menu reeks of being a tourist trap and I don't think that's what they intended.
