Where to Find the Best Kolaches in Houston | Eater Houston

"With accolades and first-place ribbons from the annual Caldwell Kolache Festival, Olde Towne has produced a robust and well-loved menu of fruit, cream, and cheese kolaches since the 1980s. Try its award-winning, hand-rolled sweet concoctions, such as the poppy seed, sausage, or cherry cream cheese, and be sure to try its Tex-Czech varieties — the Ranchero ham, egg, and cheese kolache or the beefy fajitas rendition." - Brittany Britto Garley

The 11 Best Kolaches In Houston, Ranked

"Olde Towne Kolaches brings a traditional Czech bakery feel to the middle of Houston. The hand-rolled smoked sausage and cheese is perfectly what you’d expect, but the fruit and cream cheese is what you need to order. Loaded with jammy apricots or thick blueberry swirled with sweet cheese, these fluffy pastries proudly wave their Texas flag. " - chelsea thomas, gianni greene, julie takahashi

Google
One of my favorite places to eat kolaches breakfast tacos, and some pastries. We order from here very frequently. It’s delicious!!

Harsh Parmar

Google
This place is great! The kolaches and buns were super fresh, and the bread was very soft. Service was fast and friendly, which made the whole experience even better. There’s not a ton of space to sit and chill, but it’s a great spot to grab a quick, quality breakfast or brunch on the go. Definitely worth checking out!

Steve Kleihege

Google
This is the only place in Houston that I have found to have authentic kolaches. They have a great variety of fruit and cream cheese flavors and if you like cinnamon rolls, these are the best around.

Daemon Blitzkrieg

Google
Been here once or twice before a few years ago and didn't remember why I never came back. ...sorta now remember. Don't get me wrong, the service & lady at the register was nice (dude in the back seemed annoyed tho...), but their protein items leave much to be desired. The sausage kolaches at least 60% bread (like most spots unfortunately, the polish still tastes good), but the sausage/egg/cheese one tasted...stale? Not sure how but the eggs didn't taste right. Can't really go wrong with the sweet kolaches/danish tho

Google
Hidden gem in plain sight! Easy to miss but worth the visit. Excellent kolaches with a wide variety of options.

Google
Absolutely ridiculous! I come here 3 times a week and everything has always been great. Sunday the dough was horrible, it was so dry and stale I could not even eat it. I told the rude worker and she refused to give me a refund saying the owner was not there. $30 for stale Kolaches I didn’t even eat. I won’t be coming back ever again and that’s $100 a week they are loosing.

Angel Ortiz

Google
They have kolaches and savory empanadas. Highly recommend for those of you looking to get something on the go. The staff here was welcoming and prompt. Thank you!

David Levy

Google
wow, are they proud of their kolaches $3.50 for one sausage and cheese kolache are you kidding me? I won’t be coming back until your prices are more reasonable. I spent $20 on six kolaches. What a Rip off

Yelp
It's a long drive to the hill country from Houston to get decent kolaches and/or klobasniks. Oh wait, you don't have to drive far. Olde Towne Kolaches is in Houston off of Fondren between Westheimer and Richmond. Their kolaches, klobasniks, danishes, cinnamon rolls, cookies, breakfast tacos, breakfast sandwiches, and everything thing else they make is all incredibly delicious. I like saying the word "klobasnik". Do you? I can't stop saying it (klobasnik). Klobasnik...

Yelp
Second time going here and let me explain why I did not review on my first visit.... The first time I just got what we Texans call a "kolache" which is really a "pig in a blanket". I was not cultured until I met a Czech who explained that kolaches only mean fruit pastries! Even still knowing that, I grabbed a jalapeño sausage and did not like it. There was barely any sausage!! Like a slim jim and that's a no. BUT, man the dough was so delicious...I decided I would go back and get a fruit kolache at a later time. Minus one star. Today has now entered the chat. Love, Love, Love! The cream cheese, blueberry, lemon, raspberry and cherry cream were just divine. Ask the baker to warm them up for you. He is a tall gentleman and didn't mind talking about his craft and you could see the passion in his storytelling! He also informed me of an annual kolache festival here in Texas always on the 2nd Saturday in September in which he competes. Support local and definitely grab the fruit kolaches here- it's a quick side trip off westheimer onto Fondren. Hands down the best true kolaches i've had!

Yelp
The bread here is amazing when you get it fresh and warm. This quaint bakery gets the main point absolutely right. I think the fillings both savory and sweet can get a slight quality bump and make this place really stand out, perhaps a more premium sausage. Great cinnamon rolls. Moist center is the most and not too heavy. Totally beats the kolache of a shipleys, but I think it could be just slightly better. Nice people behind the counter too! Always a plus

Yelp
A friend recommended this place since it's on my way to work. The customer service was horrible. The tall guy at the register decided I was asking one too many questions (two total) , so a lady who appeared to be the manager took over the conversation so he could go to his car and take a smoke. When he came back in he did not wash his hands. I was asking what the vegetarian options were. They had a couple of options but they appeared to be irritated because I was asking. Btw the kolache did taste good but I will be going back to kolache factory on Kirby Dr where I have received great customer service for years especially when Frank their manager was there. Their customer service is still great.

Yelp
Pretty good Kolaches! The chicken fajita empanada was very good. Cheesy, full of flavor and chicken with just the right amount of spice from the peppers. It's a must try! The fruit kolaches where pretty good. I thought the strawberry and Cream cheese streusel had an entemann's boxed snack cake flavor to me which was a big let down but everything else was as advertised. Come through and give this place a try!

Sylvia H.

Yelp
rude rude rude ... your kolaches are good but overpriced.. the lady checker needs to be nice!! she is rude, rude, rude.. a smile doesn't cost you a thing.. stay away from here.. czech people are very nice!! not here!!
google avatar

Morgan W.

Yelp
Authentic Czech Kolaches here. Came one morning bright and early around 6. Ordered the egg, cheese and potatoes, the spicy chicken and cream and a cream cheese Kolache. All of them were great. most importantly - you can tell the dough was hand made. They will warm them up for you if you ask; definitely do!
google avatar

Yelp
Okay soooo first time trying this place and 10/10! I got a whole bunch of stuff. The lady seemed a little annoyed with my questions (again my first time) at first but after ordering a few different things, she told me they also have breakfast tacos, with a smile on her face. I love me some breakfast tacos! So as she warms up my pastries she asks if I like hot sauce to which I reply OF COURSE!! next thing I know she's handing me a huevo con weenie breakfast taco covered in hot sauce, she even cut it in half for me. She was so nice and kind, and just because of her (and that delicious complimentary taco) I'll be back to spend my money with them. The store is really cute inside as well doesn't feel like it's right off westheimer.

Yelp
Delicious kolaches and absolutely wonderful service! So conveniently located, too -- at the corner of Fondren and Westheimer. Today I picked out 1 bacon & cheese, 1 ham & cheese, 2 sausage & jalapeño, 1 apple and a few cinnamon buns. Shared With the window installers, and the Constable. Everything yummy.

Sarah N.

Yelp
Amazing authentic kolaches! It was so nice going to an establishment where the owner was in the back, making the dough and the employees were so welcoming and friendly. The food was ah-mazing! Tasted just like the kolaches my Czech neighbors made in my hometown. I cannot say enough about how good and authentic these kolaches are! Try it, you will be blown away. Oh and the prices are way less than the knock-off chain kolaches.

Baylie J.

Yelp
We tried an array of kolaches (egg, jalapeño sausage, cream cheese, cinnamon roll) and didnt love any of them. won't be back. the eggs tasted powdery, like they came from a packet and didn't have enough water added. everything overall was dry as well.

Missie H.

Yelp
The lady at the front was so sweet but this place is way too overpriced for the quality of the food. Either they need to lower prices or improve the quality of the food
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
I can sum up my experience with Olde Town Kolaches with one word...disappointed. Got there at 10am on a week day, where I arrived there were no other customers in the shop. I asked a couple of questions and the employee seemed annoyed, like I was keeping her from something. I got a bacon and cheese, poppyseed, and a lemon. All three were pretty stale. Look at my photos and see for yourself. Maybe they were just having an off day, but it's not worth my time, trouble or tolls to go back and see.

Yelp
This place is awesome: I got the Kolache and it was delectable. Olde Towne Kolachiw is a must try for all newcomers. 5 stars

Yelp
I'm Czech and was in the mood for traditional Czech koláče. There are many bakeries across Texas that serve them but not many (if any!) in Houston, so I was excited when I heard about this place! The bakery itself is warm and cozy inside with a European decor style. Staff was super nice. I chose a cream cheese kolache, peach and a strawberry. The dough was soft, fresh and not too sweet while the fillings balanced it all out with the right amount if sugar and tartness! I scarfed 'em down! I'll be back to get another kolache fix in the near future!

Yelp
The name would suggest that the quality of kolache would be better than say Shipley's or Duncan donuts who are known for donuts. The name would suggest your old Polish grandma hand wrapping pieces of sausage with her secret dough handed down through the generations. Not the case. These kolaches evidently come from an "old town" that uses state of the art blends of pork bi-products (wieners) and is calling it sausage. Its just another corner to cut cost to increase margin. Weiner is mushy and cheap. Its not the weiner's fault. It is just being a weiner. The problem is that they are being called a sausage which is ridiculous..but you have to buy it and bite into it before you know it because when I asked, they said it was a sausage. THIS WEINER'S A LOSER!

Debra B.

Yelp
i love these kolaches, especially the bacon!!! i order them for wedding showers, baby showers any party! They are the best!!!
google avatar

Bibi Q.

Yelp
It's been a while since we've been here! Since the kids didn't go to school much because of COVID the stops on the way stopped! Kids are out of school and we passed by because richmond was closed (construction). Flash back! Kids were excited about the visit because it's been a while. They make their favorite kolaches. I have never tried their spicy sausage and cheese empanadas! But it's a must. It definitely has a kick of spicy please don't change that up!
google avatar

Helen N.

Yelp
The best kolaches in Houston. They have absolutely the best dough and filling. They have a large selection to pick from. From sweet to savory. The spinach kolache is my go to. You can really taste it and they stuff it with eggs. The spicy empanadas are pretty good. We've also tried a spicy chicken cream cheese which was also really good. So far I've only tried one sweet kolache, the Grandma's poppy seed one. Coming fron an asian background, it really reminded me of red bean deserts. The poppy seed is definitely unique and delcious, but I'd suggest sharing it or else you would be overwhelmed with sweetness. All of their kolaches are huge and worth the money.

Toya R.

Yelp
Nice lil pastry shop right on the corner, coffee was hot as it should be they had many options to choose from I love the lil chef in the window that's what made me go in and check it out.

Not H.

Yelp
Truly authentic Czech kolaches as you would get in West Texas (the town near Dallas, not the geographical area). Great selection of day olds for a -very- fair price. The "empanadas" are a bargain. If you want authentic Full size kiolbassa kolaches get there early. Especially on Friday and weekends.
google avatar

Dee L.

Yelp
Deliciousness at its best! Fresh, soft & yummy. I had the chicken kolache & their pecan sweet rolls are amazing
google avatar

Winnie C.

Yelp
Oh my gosh what can i say about this place?? Definitely a hole in the wall kolache shop!! What a gem!! We came here to grab a few kolaches on Sunday. Being a first timer here, i loved the whole mom and pop feels in this place. So cute!!! Christmas music was playin in the background.. i was feelin warm and cozy already. I got two jalepano and cheese kolaches and one bacon and cheese kolache. When i took that first bite, it was like heaven in my mouth. My taste buds were soaring and it was soooo delish!!! I will be a regular customer here from here on out. Must try!!!!!!

Girard T.

Yelp
I have been driving by this place for years & finally decided to stop by to try the kolaches. I have tried Weigel's Kolaches in LaGrainge as well as the Bakery in Brenham both of which are good choices if you are traveling. But if Houston is home and your craving a kolache then this is the place to go. I tried the sausage & cheese and a few assorted fruit kolaches. They were all delicious and my only regret is that I didn't try this place sooner. The gentleman that helped me was very friendly & was very patient showing me all that they had to offer. Will definitely be going back again.
google avatar

Vanesa V.

Yelp
Picked up some kolaches while I was in the area. I got the spinach and potato egg kolache. Both were not good. I couldn't even get myself to finish them. I prefer the spinach and potato egg kolaches at kolache factory.
google avatar

Linda M.

Yelp
Stopped here for a quick kolache, ordered a sausage egg and cheese apparently their idea and my idea of the definition of sausage are totally different I called that a weenie egg and cheese. Not good. The 2 star was for service the girl was very nice.
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
This is a great little place. It's decorated like a home, with a cute display case and fancy coffee section. The owners are kind every time I go in. The kolaches (both meet and fruit ones) are delicious! They also have fabulous giant cinnamon rolls and coffee.
google avatar

Patience D.

Yelp
I had these delivered via DoorDash and their sticky buns were amazing. The cinnamon roll was the perfect gooey texture and roasted walnuts on top really finished it off. I ordered a bit of everything when trying this place out. I had driven by it a few times and decided to try it out while looking for donuts on the delivery app. The sausage kolaches were what you'd expect from any Kolache place and the breakfast ones with eggs were equally appetizing. I'm not sure if it was because I had mine delivered and it took a while, but the breading was on the firmer side. I also tried the chicken empanadas which were a very good size and had the perfect shell. The flavor was typical of what you think of when you hear chicken fajita but nothing stood out about them. Overall the items I tried were good but not mind blowing. I will for sure be back for a huge box of sticky buns though. By far the best you will get anywhere!

Mariana M.

Yelp
Best kolaches ever!! After trying other kolache shops in Houston, I realized they are the best. I wish they got more recognition because they need to have their store expand to all parts of Houston. My favorite is still the spinach and egg.
google avatar

Afkham N.

Yelp
I have a love/hate relationship with this place. Every few days I crave a kolache and can't wait to get here. And then I get here and have a kolache and realize I totally could have gone all week without one. Or I will love it and wonder why I don't come here everyday. I don't come here everyday because they are INCREDIBLY inconsistent. Well, with the bread that is. The sausage is consistently small and puny. I mean for the price they charge per kolache I'm sure they can afford better ingredients.
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
The spicy cream and chicken kolache is a must try. Friendly staff, and a consistent product. I go there at least once a week. Never fails.
google avatar

Allan R.

Yelp
LOVE the Bacon and Cheese Kolaches! Bread is amazing and bacon is thoroughly cooked and tasty! Haven't tried all kolaches. Pecan Coffe flavor is also so tasty. Customer service was great as well. Don't know if every employee can deploy the same customer service but great experience over all.
google avatar

Shervin J.

Yelp
I don't get the poor ratings. Place is great. I ordered two kolaches. Bacon and cheese and potato and egg. Ate the bacon and cheese on the ride back to work. Man, it was great. The bacon to bread ratio was perfect.. By perfect they exceeded what I imagined would be in there. Got back to the office and was full so I split the potato and egg one with a coworker. He thought the potatoes were great. I thought the eggs were so fluffy and good they could be a dish by itself. I am also amazed they fit so much filling in without it getting mushy. Two huge kolaches for 4 bucks is a deal in my mind. I will drive pass Shipley's ( I still love you) and Kolache Factory to grab a couple here.

Leslie J.

Yelp
The Kolaches are delicious and service is great. Only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because whoever was serving us was not wearing a mask. I walked in with a mask on and I would've appreciated that he saw I was wearing a mask and put one on. Other than that it was a good experience.
google avatar

Kim-Anh P.

Yelp
I love the kolaches here! I used to live nearby and always treated myself to warm, delicious, fluffy sausage and cheese kolaches on my days off. I love that they have the long sausage kolaches (unlike some of the other places who deceivingly use cocktail size sausages). I like that they have variety and also the sweet breakfast foods too like danishes, I just happen to be a kolache lover so never got around to tasting those. Definitely a good meat-to-bread ratio and always fresh!
google avatar

Clint N.

Yelp
I love the bacon n cheese Kolaches and sausage & jalapeno pockets. Nice workers, clean shop with a lot to choose from. Kind of pricey but well worth the money.
google avatar

Kathryn M.

Yelp
This place is a must try. The Spicy chicken and cream cheese kolache will change your life.
google avatar

Carol W.

Yelp
This place! So much better than any chain. The cinnamon rolls, pecan sticky buns and kolaches really do taste homemade. You can tell the difference.
google avatar

Mark J.

Yelp
Yuck - that's really all I can think of when reviewing this place. Once again got roped into trying a new place with a Groupon - this one was probably my worst experiment yet. I ordered two chicken empanadas, a fajita kolache and a sticky bun. The fajita kolache was a big gooey doughey thing with meat that was both tasteless and tough as a shoe sole - I ended up feeding it to my dogs. The chicken empanadas were made of the same gooey sweet dough and had nothing to do with an empanada. They were more like a sweet kolache with chicken and cheese tucked inside, edible but not very good. I am not sure about the sticky bun, given my other two experiences I think I will trash it and cut my losses.
google avatar

Joy G.

Yelp
I came here twice. This is my 2nd time. I think there is not a balance between the bread and bacon cheese. To much bread or the bread is too dense.

Erica F.

Yelp
$9 for 4 Kolaches?! 2 sausage and 2 jalapeño sausage and cheese. I've had better for cheaper.
google avatar

T D E.

Yelp
So good!!!!! This was My first time and now I'm hooked. Fresh hearty the dough is amazing. Good bye kolaches factory you will not be missed. Olde Town is my new go to for a great kolaches before work. Absolutely AMAZING!!!!

A A.

Yelp
The cream cheese and fruit kolaches are fairly good. If you want to get your fruit kolache fix, come here. It would be nice to see some poppyseed kolaches, but that might be more of a Central Texas regional thing. The bacon kolaches are also fine, but avoid the sausage kolache. I got a jalapeño sauage kolaches that was like a lil' smokie and a slice of pickle jalapeño in a cavernous kolache.
google avatar

Faig N.

Yelp
It was my first time here. Chicken Fajita Empanada was so delicious, also sausage and cheese was so tasty. Thanks, i will come back.
google avatar

Michael K.

Yelp
My favorite breakfast... Olde towne is by far the yummiest. Try their bacon and cheese kolache!!!
google avatar

Natalie M.

Yelp
First time visiting Old Towne and I had a good experience. The staff were attentive and friendly enough. Ordered two kolaches: egg, cheese & bacon, and a raspberry filled. The EC&B one was edible. Wouldn't rush back to get another, but that raspberry filled kolache was soooo good! The bread was crazy tasty. Would love another now, but the shop closes in a few. I also ordered a cup of coffee. It was okay. Have yet to find a spot in Houston that serves good coffee. Any suggestions?!
google avatar

Samantha T.

Yelp
BF picked me up some jalepeno sausage cheese and strawberry cream cheese kolache. Best way to describe it...it was HORRIBLE! The sausage was overcooked and the size of my finger. The cheese was old and dried up. I'm curious to know if they would even eat what they serve. There's already a 50% profit margin in bakeries, but must the bread to filling must also be the same? He might as well have gone out and bought a loaf of bread. I would NEVER eat at this place again. Shipley's cost less and taste better.

Mark M.

Yelp
I consider this place to have some of the best kolaches in Houston. The people that work there are very friendly. I got a bacon, egg, and cheese kolache as well as a couple sweet/fruit ones. The fruit ones are FAR better than those at kolache factory and the savory ones were also better --- the ingredients tasted fresher. All in all a great place. I will definetely be back!

Melinda K.

Yelp
The food is Great! The little things that go with it (plates, serving tools, forks) the owner went cheap on us on. Ordered large Kolache mixed platter, small mixed muffins and scones, and small fresh fruit platter for a business meeting - we had no serving utensils, and only 15 forks and small cake plates - so if anyone wanted a pastry and fruit, they could only have one or the other. I've never had a food delivery that was didn't give a little extra on the paper and plastic.
