Olneyville New York System Restaurant

Wow these are great weiners. Flavor is unique and delicious. I had two all the way with fries and coffee milk. Fries were hot and yummy. Coffee milk is great. My wife decided to try one weiner which is all she usually eats and ordered another. Service was fast and very friendly. Counter service and booths available. Hotdog and weiner fans should definitely have this location on their bucket list.

For readers who don't know about New York System wieners, the five stars I'm giving here is not like the five stars I give world class restaurants. Olneyville New York System is a world unto itself. I lived in Rhode Island years ago, and I was thrilled to enjoy the wonderful seafood available here. But I couldn't leave without tasting at least one Olneyville wiener. New York System wieners can only be found in Rhode Island, and Olneyville is the classic. These beef/pork/veal sausages are served on a steamed bun "all ways", meaning with meat sauce, yellow mustard, chopped onions, and celery salt. This unusual combination of ingredients comes together to make a memorable flavor. The ambiance is exactly what I remembered from 35 years ago -- a long counter, a few formica tables, and a stentorian counter man who suddenly declared to no one in particular, "We've I've been here 83 years. I've been here more than half that time. Isn't that amazing?"

Since coming to Rhode Island as an international student, i have been craving for some local diner- style American food. A friend brought me here and I really enjoyed it! I got 3 hot wieners with a side of chili cheese fries and of course the coffee milk, because it wouldn’t be RI without coffee milk The workers here are really chill. Everyone at the restaurant seemed to be locals of the area.

I've driven by the spot many times over the last few years, and because of the new culture, I tried my hardest not to go because I didn't want to be a Glizzy monster. But this place has some really good hot dogs. All jokes aside, I had to grab four of them.

This spot definitely makes you feel like you're in NY. Atmosphere, food smells and design authentic NY! The food was good! They are known for their hotdogs and boy did they deliver! My friend snagged a dog and ate it so fast I couldn't snag a pic. My girls both got grilled cheese and said it was great! I got a Cheese steak only complaint was they didn't spread the meat. Otherwise delicious place to stop!

All the way special double weaner! Make sure to yell when you order. The milk coffee surprisingly goes well with it! (Not for the lactose intolerant). Friendly staff and a favorite of my daughter which now, is a favorite of mine! Open until 3am! Awesome casual place to dine with good food, fast service, and friendly staff! One of the best local gems!

Nice place. We wanted to try this NY system, that dude was so friendly man! He greeted us and reassured us he would get to our order as we settled in. Gave us suggestions. Made us try a fries with vinegar and salt! Was awesome! The fries here are really good 😊 i would come back just to see that nice fellow. Stellar service 🤝give him a raise ✅

What's not to love about this place? It's a Rhode Island staple and a classic. The people who work there are fun and great at what they do- it's entertaining to watch them make the wieners! I love the old school ambience and that they are open late. One of the best wieners in town- 3 all the way please (when I was in my 20's haha- now I'll just save the other two for later)! Perhaps a side of cheese fries and a coffee milk...yum! *Tip: if you are ever at Fete for a show, make sure to grab some grub after! Thanks Olneyville!

Really cool RI staple with fast and friendly service. Wieners were good but a little bland.

"Disgusting!" This was the one word I heard over and over again from a Providence resident, in regards to ONYS. "You'll smell like onions for the rest of the day" was another warning, but one which holds little water for me. I love smelling like the foods I love, and onions are a personal favorite. Seriously, can you imagine life without onions? But I digress. I am here to say, avoid the haters. I regret every single missed opportunity to visit ONYS over the last sixteen years of my fairly regular travels to Rhode Island. For the record, this is coming from a New Yorker and a Michigander, who has a fondness for the occasional Chicago dog. That also makes me an equal opportunity hot dog lover, without prejudice for meat blends, casings, toppings or cooking methods. Great dogs can come in all shapes and sizes, and so can not so great ones. ONYS makes a great dog. For being in a bit of a rougher part of town, this is a tender, delicate version of the form. I can get down with that. No snap. Just a juicy silky blend of pork, beef, and veal. The wiener itself has some delicate spice, which is enhanced by just a bit more heat from the chili. It's not hot, but pleasantly tingly. Lets say piquant, even if that word is entirely out of place with the vibe at the counter. The onions and mustard provide some balancing brightness. What I was not expecting was the celery salt. My bad for not doing my research before grabbing a stool at the well worn counter. However, in my mind, it is this small detail which sets the Rhode Island style apart from its cousins. Of course, it's the whole package, with the selection of the wiener and the composition of the chili as well. Still, the celery salt was a delightful pop in the kisser and far from out of place in the hot dog universe. However, until now I did not realize it was in use outside of Chicago. The added salt on top is one reason I was glad to have ordered a coffee milk on the side. The other reason is that to date this was the best coffee milk I've had in the state. Rich, creamy, cold, and full flavored. I know it just comes from a bag. Perhaps coffee milk simply tastes better after something salty. The coffee milk came in a pint glass, and when I cashed out my bill said it was a large one. That tracks. Perhaps ONYS offers a small one? If so, that would be my go to for next time. As tasty as it was, that's a lot of fluid dairy. In the end, the wiener was $3.69 the large coffee milk was $7.18. With tax and a 17% tip for counter service, I was in and out for $9. Food has gotten more expensive these days for sure, but you shouldn't be eating that many hot dogs anyway. One was plenty satiating especially with all of that milk. I'll be back and will continue to fight the good fight against any naysayers. I'm also very curious to try the grilled cheese. Next time ONYS. Next time.

The dam hot weiners can't be beat. you can ONLY get them in RI no matter what anyone tells you. GOOD NEWS, you can buy the meat mixture on line and do your own at home!!! A must go when in RI

These are a unique style of wiener to this region... so we had to give it a try! We had ours "all the way" ... why be picky! And they were delicious! The hot dogs themselves are sort of a dyed red color and cut square on the ends. Smothered in a meat sauce and onions... we got the "all the way". On a side note, I went in to pick up our orders because we were traveling with our dog, and as soon as I mentioned that's why they were "to go", the cook chopped up a wiener and wrapped it up for our dog! He said "remove the casing" ... not sure why, but we did, and Nibbler just loved it! We loved ours too. In addition to the wieners we had coffee milks... another unique local treat... milk with a coffee syrup, iced. Delicious. Next time we're in the Providence area, we'll definitely revisit!

My friend, Amy and I went New York System at first time. We ordered two hot dogs and fries. It looks good tasty. And New York System looks like 80s year where they go dinner.

Super fast service ! Fries were cooked to order. FYI for Togo orders they don't give you any bags. So bring your own bag if you are buying a lot . Hot dogs were perfect. Great atmosphere, a throwback to the way diners looked in the 80's and 80's .

This system seems like it has been around since RI was established,it is an Icon for most Rhode-islanders. I have over fifty years seen some changes that I guess are inevitable but if you want your "Gaga's" this is still the best. A little pricey but everything is a little pricy also.

As a native Rhode Islander, this is a staple of our diets here and we live on this. There are many restaurants around the state who serve this dish in while many do a very good job, some places do it better than others. It's all in the meat sauce recipe and each restaurant has a different recipe varying by one or two ingredients and the measurements. In my humble opinion, ONYS does it best, and therefore makes it the best weenie joint in the state. I also love the ambiance and I love nothing better than grabbing a stool and bellying up to the counter to order "Tree all day way" from the gruff counter men with a dozen weiners stacked up in a row on their forearm during busy periods. PRO TIP: Going there for late night eats and the floor show is highly entertaining as the drinks roll in after the bars close as ONYS closes at 2am Sun-Thursday and at 3am Fri-Sat.

Food is always consistent and great service. Old school ambiance. It's like going home. Same great taste, perfectly done.

I usually hit up the other Olneyville spot but my travels brought me here. The vibe is a bunch of local folks, dining and just enjoying their time together. I walked in and saw them all kidding around with each other. There was a police officer that bought a new Tesla talking about her car to the other patrons. I'm not here for the show with the 10 wieners on the arm. I just wanna be in and out. A man behind the counter asked if I want the lunch special which is two dogs and fries. I'm not in the mood for fries so I ordered two wieners all the way with a glass of coffee milk. My lunch comes to me quickly and I'm in heaven. Chili and onions all day son! While I'm at the counter, a group of people walked in. I guess they were expecting theatrics?? I can see disappointment on their faces. They sat down and I heard them order steak sandwiches. Listen, here's my beef about this place. Olneyville "New York" System? I'm from New York (Go Yankees!) and just passing thru Rhode Island. How do you not offer New York staples like sauerkraut or red onions as wiener toppings? For shame..

Rhode Islander here. Grew up in NK and lived all over the state. Although, I never went to New York System. Or if I did, I certainly don't remember. I figured I needed to go there to be an official Rhode Islander. What a meh experience. Sat at the counter and I ordered the wiener special; two wieners all the way with a side of fries. My partner ordered the grilled cheese deluxe. I absolutely made sure to order a glass of cawfee milk off the tap. Being at the counter, we're able to see all the food being prepared. No one used gloves, even when handling raw meat. No one washed their hands yet, touched every surface and food item no gloves. I saw one man wearing a glove but, mostly using the bare one. I love diners, dives and mom & pop places. Sometimes they don't use gloves. But, they at least wash hands after handling raw meat. Kinda put off by that. The food? Fries, very dry, chewy and warmish. Even after drenching them in vinegar and ketchup, bleh. The wieners? Tasty but, the meat wasn't a sauce. It was really just wet, crumbled, cooked meat and barely any mustard. I'm not sure what people are raving about. They were really bland. Grilled cheese was perfection though. When I think about a grilled cheese, that's what I think of. My glass of coffee milk was so insanely good, I dreamt about it. It alone gives the place a star. Staff was so nice and chatty, (that got the second star). I also loved the diner atmosphere. But, I don't think I'll be visiting again. Which I find super sad. "RI's best hot wieners!!" serve extremely bland wieners; but excellent milk and grilled cheese? Passing through though, I'll may grab myself a glass of cawfee milk.

Don't ask for hot dogs here, there weiners, don't ask for ketchup either they come one way with a fine ground hamburger with chopped onions deli mustard and celery salt , no other way... just saying. Always fresh and very consistent, great service and nice staff anytime day to late night, don't forget a coffee milk. Been in several times over the years, whenever in RI keep going back.

I can't judge the food or interior because I decided not to go inside. I give only 4 stars out of frustration. I drove waaayyyyy out of my way (as-in 60 mins+) to try these dogs. Man, I was bummed when upon seeing the place (cool), I quickly determined there was no way I was going to park and risk walking even 50 feet into the place. The groups of nodding, leaning, wasted, camping, urinating, and shooting-up, folks up and down the sidewalk would've made it hard. I am very experienced on the streets in some rough towns around the world but this, at 11:30am on a Sunday, was just not good. At least not to deal with intentionally. Oh well. Really too bad the streets in the area are so challenging. Obviously, be aware of what you'll be dealing with if you decide to head over there. No idea what the Cranston location is like.

I've been to a few similar places in upstate NY and was excited to try this restaurant while on vacation in Rhode Island. It didn't disappoint! Service was so helpful and friendly! I should have asked for the name of the young man who explained the meat sauce (I wanted to check that it didn't contain tomato) and about coffee milk. He even gave us a sample of the drink to try-- it's perfect with a couple of dogs! This has the feeling of stepping back in time when you eat here. Quick and friendly service with simple items prepared well. The signage and decor was vintage and appealing. The restaurant was clean and had lots of locals and tourists eating lunch. The meat sauce was a bit different from some other places- the server said it had some Greek spices and it has celery salt sprinkled on top. I liked this version and will order 3 hot dogs next time I'm in the area!

i recently went on a solo trip to providence and heard about this place being a can't-miss, so naturally i had to check it out. the deli style vibes of this place are absolutely immaculate, the food was impeccable, and the service? i can't even describe it. everyone was extremely friendly and attentive and loud and fun and it was everything i could have possibly asked for. i grabbed a coffee milk and 2 wieners (or "gaggahs" as some might say) all the way, which means they put meat sauce, celery salt, mustard, and raw onion on the red dawg. the flavors were melting on my tongue!!!! i can't say enough good about this place and the next time I'm in rhode island i will 100% be visiting again.

I ordered a gyro, baklava and a hotdog with the meat sauce and cheese. I personally do not like the meat sauce as it is a bit grainy in texture and has a weird flavor to it. Besides that it is a basic hotdog. The gyro was decent but nothing to write home about. The balaclava was good. The service there is good the staff is very friendly and the food came out in a timely manner. The ambiance in the restaurant reminds me of a mom and pop shop, they have nice historical providence vibes inside although a bit run down.

The hot dogs at this place are small, shriveled, tasteless, and very expensive. Two hot dogs, small fries and a drink for $12.99. Having tasted hot dogs all over the world and considering that hot dogs are one of my favorite foods I can say unequivocally that these were the most overrated hot dogs that I've ever tasted. There are no bad hot dogs in my opinion, but unfortunately these came close. The restaurant has a dive bar vibe, which is fine and perfectly normal for a hot dog joint. Just be careful that you don't fall into a deep fryer or into the dishwasher if you need to use the restroom. The service was fast and not too friendly.

No frills diner style restaurant. A staple of RI culture. Get a gagger (hot dog all the way (meat sauce, mustard, chopped raw onions, celery salt), beef stew (fries covered in ketchup and vinegar), and a coffee milk. No fuss but great flavor and super filling. Everyone was nice, knowing I was a newbie, and food comes out stupid quick.

This place is a truly local experience. We came straight from airport as a bnb check in layover and had a time with Nick and the squad. My first wiener was a fun experience, the coffee milk was a sweet treat and the chili fries were super crispy, fresh and hot though I'd leave off the chili if I indulged again. Highly recommend the super steak sandwich ny sister had. Such a warm intro to Providence's charmed and chill energy. Thank you Olneyville, I was happy to do it your way!

Always a great stop for the world famous R.I. Weiners & salt & vinegar fries. The guys behind the counter are always welcoming & engaging whether it's your first time or you've been in 100's of times. Whether you are doing takeout, counter service or grabbing a booth, you are part of the action & hubbub. If it's later in the evening, you get people from 2nd shift just getting out, people coming in from concerts, sporting events or making it an early night after being at the club, yet everyone coexists. If you've never been, you aren't a "true" Rhode Islander until you do go in & try it...

Old school looking Diner style. Friendly staff attentive. Quick service and classic style items. Tried the Fries with cheese,Hot Dog and a steak & cheese. Very tasty, items were priced well for the value. Never had celery salt, savoring dog. Definitely recommend worthy trying.

An institution in Rhode Island for the New York system hotdog chains. This is founded in 1942 is now run by a third generation owner. His hot dogs are rated one of the best and variety of TV shows and the atmosphere is of an old school diner. A must see for people who follow Food like me looking for the most popular Rhode Island spot to eat.

I am no longer a "weiner virgin" came here with my son on our way back to CT. Holy smokes! This place is awesome. Love the smart alec banter and the local vibe. Get the house special, 2 weiners done their way! fries with malt vinegar! and a coffee milk. We got served in an instant! Can't believe I am saying this, but I wish I lived in Providence! I would be here all the time.

3 all the way with a small fry and a coffee milk. Been coming here since I was as a child and could barely reach the counter. Iconic experience for travelers, get them all the way and use the vinegar on them fries. Make sure you wash it down with a coffee milk to make your RI all American meal complete.

I traveled all the way up from Florida visit family and a must have are weiners. I was born and raised in RI and these didn't disappoint! Great diner with home cooked food too.

Coming Cali, I thought this place was great for what it is. Food was fantastic with their signature "wieners", great service and a old school vibe.

I'm a huge fan of a good chill dog. Grew up in NY where chili dogs are a big deal. Discovered this spot after watching a YouTube video on places to try when out in providence. This spot is definitely a RI staple and must be tried if ever visiting the area. Here's why...service is great. The staff behind the counter had me laughing and excited about trying one of their wieners for the first time. Service is also fast and efficient. I was able to get my to-go order within minutes. The wiener itself was tasty. I'm not a mustard fan, so my wiener had everything but that, which could have made the difference between a good and great wiener. The meat sauce was just what I like for a hot dog topper. I noticed that some ask for double meat sauce, which is what I will do next time. I may ask if they can add cheese to it, seeing that I excluded the mustard. Without the mustard it's a little bland. The place is awesome. It's an historic spot that has a consistent product. Oh...I love the celery salt they top the wieners with. On another note...parking is somewhat limited. 6-8 spots in their immediate lot. Seems like a lot of foot traffic, but I'd driving, keep that in mind if trying to go there during peak hours.

The food is exactly what we expected - good, classic hot wieners. It's so fun how you walk in, take a booth, and call your order up to the grill - really makes it feel like an experience.

8/6/24 1 PM Haven't been here in a long time, but I decided to get my wife and I a couple of wieners. BIG MISTAKE!!!! I got the wieners to go, two with onions and two no onions. I thought mine were wet and soggy because of the onions, but that wasn't the case. My wife's wieners were not only soggy, but tasteless. The only thing good about these hotdogs was they were hot ,other than that they had no taste. this is not the New York system. I remember going to for 40 years. I don't know what's happening with the quality, but they need to address these issues. I guess if you're leaving a bar at midnight and go have these wieners they probably taste delicious because you don't know the difference we know the difference and it's sad to say they were awful. Another Rhode Island icon has, sorry to say has gone downhill.

Ok, so I am not a hot dog conniseur by any means, but I am a native New Yorker, so naturally I had to check the place out. I hate to admit that I have been in this state for over 10 years now and this is the first time I check it out. "Hot Wieners," just didn't sound appetizing to me, but with the Thanksgiving holdiday, having 5 New Yorkers visiting me, it gave us something fun to do. We went their on Black Friday, parking wasn't great, but we were able to park in the McDonald's parking lot, so a very short walk. It looked busy, but there were plenty of spots to seat our party of 8 people. We all ordered the special, which came with 2 hot wieners (hot dogs with chili and chopped onions), a drink, and a side of fries for $12.99. Many of my people ordered the coffee milk as well because when in Rhode Island... None of them had had coffee milk before and they enjoyed it. I just don't like the flavor of coffee, so I didn't get that, but they have Coke products, so I ordered a Sprite. Anyway the food came in under 5 minutes, I am not even kidding you. It was so quick. And our server was great too, very friendly. He even had to deal with my step father's typical dad jokes, which he handled like a champ. I ate one hot wiener and I did enjoy it. It went down smooth and I could see it being a good drunken night or hangover cure the following morning. I did hear that they are open late and have a window that you can go do to grab some wieners to go. The inside was definitely circa 1980, but that actually gave it some charm. With that kind of place, you are there for weiners and to say you've had some of the best hot wieners in the state. My brother who lived in RI for a year, made it his mission to sample all of the hot weiners in the state and he deemed this place to be the best.

I've been coming to this Olneyville NY System for years and it is by far my favorite place for wieners in all of Rhode Island. It generally is a special treat, but I've been here twice this week because my friend Jade wanted to go eat there. She doesn't eat much meat and wanted a very specific "burger" that consists of a hamburger bun, cheese, ketchup, mustard, chopped onion, pickles & lettuce (on the side). She swears that they make it better here than anywhere else. She also loves the fries, which they cook slightly softer for her and she loads them with vinegar & ketchup. I can't help but go with the classic, 3 wieners all the way and a coffee milk. I don't know why or how but the coffee milk here is better than any other and it goes perfectly with the wieners. The service is AMAZING!! The crew here are able to take orders, hand out food and properly charge everyone without writing anything down and I've never seen them make a mistake. They are also super friendly, especially Nick who makes sure we're well taken care of no matter how busy it gets. The ambiance is classic diner style with a long counter and a bunch of booths. Usually we have a probably sitting at booths but these booths and tables are not attached to the floor so they move and are easy to get in and out of. The walls are full of cool stuff to look at like funny signs, news articles and photos of celebrities who have visited here! They also play a good mix of music at a perfect volume. Can't say enough good about this place. It me look intimidating like a "locals only" but it's not at all and it's 100% worth you stopping in to try. There is another location in Cranston, but I feel like this is the one go goto if you're gonna try it! It does get busy around lunch time during the week and especially late night on weekends when the bars are getting out so plan ahead! Get one all the way. That's a hot weiner with meat sauce, onions and celery salt. I got it with a pint of coffee milk. It only comes in one size btw so bring Lactaid if needed. The coffee milk uses Autocrat syrup btw. Reminded me of a light version of Starbucks Coffee frappucino in a bottle but still good. Also got a side of fries. It is fried well but isn't super crispy like pomme frites. I saw a lot of people come in for the steak sandwich with cheese I should come back and order that next time. Staff was friendly and attentive. Was confused on how to tip since using credit card didn't allow me to tip and there's no tip jar.

A real throwback and expert hot dog men. I had 3 all in as I recommend you should. Chili and diced onions and celery salt.

Great stop just before heading to the airport. We were first timers and everyone working was super friendly and hilarious. Jo Jo taking our order made the experience even better. Dude is a hoot. Cool place too with a relaxed atmosphere. Being from the Detroit area I know the Coney dogs well, this is different. Not like our coney sauce at all but I have to say, I might like these hot wieners more than what we have back home. Coffee milk was great too. I'll head back for sure next time I'm in the area.

Yum! Old school diner vibes for sure, really kind staff, and delicious hot dogs! Outside of coming here I have never once ordered a hot dog with anything other than ketchup because it just sounds so heavy but I got the hot wiener special and was very impressed! They were delicious and two was actually the perfect amount because they're somewhat small. Would definitely recommend for a casual, yummy, quick lunch. They have a small parking lot and do accept card.

New York system has some good hotdogs. I personally don't love the extra meat on top, so I get it without, but I'm sure it's good with it. Either way last time we went in our server was a little odd, speaking a lot about outlandish things while we were eating, so we never really felt like we could just eat. It wasn't too bad, but honestly, I felt like we couldn't even speak to each other at the table because the guy kept coming up to us so often. Overall will probably be back at some point if we're in the mood for some hotdogs. I think I got cheese fries when I was there, and those were good too.

This is five star all day long! I took the journey from North Central Connecticut to Providence, because I heard these were the best weiners around with mustard onion and sauce. Upon arriving parking was extremely tight, maybe six dedicated parking spots, and parking on the street which is very limited. Maybe park on the side street. It's worth the effort. Entering this back in time, nostalgic, hole in the wall, I was greeted warmly by almost the entire staff I ordered three, up, which means they are coming with mustard, onion sauce, and celery salt. Upon the first bite, the snap of the weiner, the taste of the steamed bun, along with the sauce, mustard, onions and celery salt, sent me right into the food coma, Freaking amazing taste! If you are in the area, this is a must stop for the best hotdogs in New England. Yes, New England!. This amazing little hole in the wall, takes credit cards debit cards, and of course, cash. You can either order at the counter or table side. Don't forget to tip the staff! They all work hard and deserve anything extra. This was a wonderful experience, and I look forward to visiting again soon. You should too.

We saw their listing in the Providence Restaurant Weeks and decided to return as it had been some years since our last visit. Their special offering was simple and delicious, and we recommend it to anyone looking for something good and cheap. The two wieners, fries and coffee milk were all 'spot on'.

This is a must if you visit Providence. I visit my son at Brown Univ. FIRST place he wants to go is NY Systems for wieners!!! This place not fancy. Matter of fact its like a fast food diner! The wieners have a meat sauce that looks like chili. But dont mistake it for chili! Its NOT!! One "All the way" means wiener w mustard, meat sauce and onions!!! Cheese fries are a good side to go with. And then a coffee milk is a must to wash it all down! Sit at the counter- listen to the banter between the workers. Its free comedy. And they are friendly. If someone orders 4-5-6+ wieners take a look and the guy lining up wieners up his arm to add meat sauce etc. its talent. The most ive witnessed is 9! Highly recommend the short trip to eat here!!

Fun place to take out of town visitors. We had a large group and got a few things as well as the hot weiners. Coffee milk on tap. Fun service from the guys behind the counter.
