Chef Townsend Wentz’s Spanish tapas bar & restaurant with cocktails, sherry & beer
"Unlike the boy band surge of the 2000s where every song sounded the same, the tapas scene in Philadelphia is not created equal. And while Barcelona Wine Bar and Amada are the BTS and NSYNC of the city’s Spanish restaurants, Oloroso in Midtown Village is more like the BBMak: totally forgettable, and very likely to disappoint even when you’ve got a great seat to the show. There are some positive aspects to this spot—a great wine list, an extensive charcuterie menu, an upscale candlelit dining space, and a large outdoor setup. But that’s where the good times end. Few of the dishes pack a punch when it comes to flavor or execution, despite an extensive tapas menu and shareable small plates. If you happen to be in the area, stick to what they’re good at—some good cheese boards and an excellent New York Strip. If they made more dishes like it, they’d have a few hits on their hands." - Candis R. McLean
"With an unexpectedly light and crispy exterior (thanks to a pate a choux batter), Oloroso’s warm churros are tossed in smoked cinnamon sugar and served alongside a chocolate sauce boosted by a touch of Espelette pepper." - Sarah Maiellano
"Cured meat lovers will rejoice at Oloroso’s expansive selection of chorizos (with options like the chorizo pamplona made with pimento or the chorizo picante made with smoked paprika), jamón, sheep milk cheese (such as manchego), and more." - George Banks-Weston
"Considered one of Philly’s most underrated restaurants, Oloroso specializes in tantalizing tapas and sherry wine. Have fun mixing and matching a variety of dishes with options like charred octopus, roasted beets, paella, and patatas bravas or if you’re in the mood for something more substantial it also offers a roasted half pig’s head or 32-ounce filet mignon for two." - George Banks-Weston
"Places serving tapas in this town are easy to find, but Oloroso is a masterclass in how more can actually be more. Chef Townsend Wentz is known for his super successful French restaurant Townsend and Italian byob A Mano, but his Spanish tapas spot deserves more recognition for its tasty steak empanadas, scallop brochettes, ham and cheese croquetas, chicken tagine, and so many other great options that will make you regret not visiting before reading this." - Ernest Owens
