The 38 Best Restaurants in Sydney, Australia | Eater

"Since 2012, Jonathan Barthelmess has drawn endless crowds for his appealing Greek menu at the Apollo, even leading to a spinoff in Tokyo. He opened Olympus in late 2024 with a similar room-filling buzz in Wunderlich Lane’s dining district. Head chef Ozge Kalvo (Ester, Baba’s Place) helps him execute the menu: The prasopita is a wonderfully flaky spiral of potato, leeks, spices, and the savory punch of four melted cheeses (manouri, kasseri, feta, and kefalotyri). Spanakopita appears on most tables and octopus with burnt honey sauce is also popular. Must-try dish: Don’t overlook the refreshing frozen yogurt, drizzled with honey from Athens and garnished with ever-changing Greek spoon sweets (preserved figs and candied walnuts in summer, candied eggplant or pumpkin in winter)." - Lee Tran Lam

Olympus is known in Greek mythology as being the home of twelve Olympian Gods, supposedly the place where these twelve meddled in human lives. I had an Olympus in my sights today, only the mountain was a mountain of food at Olympus Dining, Surrey Hills! I have eyed off this restaurant two or three times when visiting Sydney, and today was the day 🏛 Olives, white cod roe dip, oysters in a tomato vinegar, and octopus with capers and lemon was first up for the entrée. Standout? The octopus..  Superb 😋 Fried zucchini with mizithra then a Kefalotyri cheese with honey and lemon filled the gap between entrée and mains. The cheese - wow! 😯 Mains was a charcoal grilled fish, some roasted lamb and tzatziki, with a salad and chips. The fish was light, flavoursome, and easy to eat. The lamb was phenomenal with a crusty, herbed finish. A Martini then a Domaine Sigalas Assyrtiko from Santoroni were good accompanying drinks 🍸 Dessert was in two parts with a hazelnut Brulée rice pudding and candied fig in olive oil with frozen yoghurt. An unusual combination; I wasn't sure about the mix, but the brulée was excellent. The wait staff were excellent; attentive and prompt without being intrusive 🔟/🔟 and the dining area had a very Greek feel to it, with feature statues and a central tree overhanging the marble and table settings 🇬🇷 Would definitely eat here again ✅️

Disappointing service and cold food despite great ambience. The ambience and setting are impressive, but unfortunately they do not make up for the poor service and food quality we experienced. Despite having a reservation, we waited approximately 35 minutes to be seated simply because we requested an additional chair at our table. This delay was poorly handled and unnecessary. The bread with white cod roe dip was the highlight of the night. We ordered several entrées and mains, including octopus, king prawns, and sardines. The hand cut chips came out kind of stale. The sardines were served cold. After informing our server (Olivia M) and requesting they be reheated, the dish was returned still cold and ultimately left uneaten. The most concerning issue was the service. While clearing our table, the server (Olivia M) asked one of friends at our table to pick up food scraps and place them onto the plate she was carrying, so that she would not need to dirty her hands. This was unprofessional and unacceptable, particularly for a restaurant at this price point. Given the reputation and pricing, we expected significantly better service and properly prepared food. Overall, the experience fell well below expectations, and the ambience alone does not justify the shortcomings.

We went for a family dinner as we'd heard the food was amazing. It certainly didn't disappoint. Standout dishes included Kefalotyri Saganaki, Arnaki, Souvlakia Kotopoulo, and the hand-cut chips. The atmosphere was great and the restaurant fit-out superb! Our server, however, was not up to scratch. She didn't take one of our party's celiac requirements very seriously and seemed annoyed by questions about the menu. At one point, she asked, "Well, do you have an EpiPen?" as if that was the solution to any accidental exposure. Server note: gluten intolerance doesn't cause anaphylaxis. However, her finest moment came when we were asking about the different wines, her advice, perhaps to help move things along, was "well if you don't care about wine, get the Canberra one". Otherwise, a lovely night with family.

Mt Olympus was the home of the ancient Greek gods and this restaurant is worthy of serving their cuisine!!! Some of the absolute best Greek food I've had in my life! The sagonaki was magnificent, a humongous flavour punch in the best way and the grilled octopus was truly heavenly, Zues himself would be impressed 😋 👌 all dishes were excellent, and quality wine backed it up. We had fantastic service and outstanding recommendations by our waiter despite being very busy. Kudos 👏

The atmosphere at Olympus was vibrant for Friday lunch, backed by some of the most attentive and hospitable service I’ve experienced recently. The culinary output, however, felt a little uneven. The seafood is clearly where the kitchen shines. The market Bass Grouper was flawlessly cooked and seasoned, and the octopus was a highlight of the meal. In contrast, the meat courses lacked the same precision. The lamb shoulder was notably dry and stringy, while the sweetbreads (presented as a minced filling in a pastry) missed the mark on the delicate, golden texture usually associated with the dish. Additionally, the "Village Bread" lacked the rustic character one might expect with Greek bread. Overall, Olympus is a "good" dining experience.

Overall great experience, the food was good and service was attentive. We started with the bread and it was our favourite of the meal, soft inside and crispy outside, perfect with the dip which wasn’t too fishy. The octopus was quite salty and can only be eaten with the bread. The fried lamb brain and zucchini was just ok, nothing special. However, the cheese dish stood out to us, hot with that sweet and salty combo. On to the main, the meatball was perfectly cooked, super tender but I can’t say the same to the quite hard rice underneath. We were so excited for the eggplant and mushroom but it tasted quite burnt. The chicken was juicy but the sauce didn’t add much flavour. The lamb shoulder was soft and well seasoned. The fried rice was super buttery but again, a bit hard for our standard.

Amazing! This place was truly worth the hype and I dont say this easily. Great food, great atmosphere and friendly staff where nothing was too much of a hassle.. although you do have to get lucky to get a booking in the first place as it took me months to get stars aligned to finally get there. But I'd definitely be back. We just ordered too much food based on staff recommendation, thats the only feedback I'd give about portion size as they are not as small as spanish tapas but we're not big eaters either.

Olympus Dining is an absolute standout. The ambience is beautiful and thoughtfully designed, with warm, elegant interiors and a truly stunning tree centrepiece that immediately sets the tone for a memorable dining experience. The food was even better the second time around — refined, generous, and consistently impressive across every dish. The wait staff were attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely welcoming, elevating the entire experience without being intrusive. Add to that an excellent wine list, thoughtfully curated and perfectly matched to the menu, and it all comes together seamlessly. A restaurant that delivers on atmosphere, service, and exceptional food. I look forward to coming back for dinner.
