Onaka

"Tucked away in a cul-de-sac, this sushi bar is invariably packed to the seams (booking highly recommended). The chef at the helm, sushi champion of France, trained in several of chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s establishments, no less. Impeccably cooked rice, moist tender chicken, melt-in-the-mouth salmon, juicy red tuna, firm seabass, spicy miso sauce dusted with fresh garden herbs, last-minute grated wasabi and a knockout selection of sakés (the sommelier and partner knows his business). The omakase menu features a festival of flavours for a fine dining experience that can be adapted to suit the appetites and wallets of everyone." - Michelin Inspector

Top quality sushi here. Absolutely order the grilled chicken skewers - the barbeque/grill flavour is insanely good and has such an izakazya feel. I would happily order 2-3 of that dish in retrospect. I also had the tuna futomaki and ikura which were exceptional. Futomaki comes with 8 pieces (I know it shows 6 on my photo, but I ate two already!). My husband doesn't eat raw fish, so he enjoyed the chicken skewers, he loved the prawn tempura (best we've had, no dipping sauce needed as seasoned perfectly!) and ordered chicken katsu - small point to note is that it doesn't come with a curry sauce but a sesame dip which also contains peanuts. As we were allergic this was swapped for a mayonnaise sauce (but my husband also dislikes mayonnaise!). He said the chicken katsu was battered brilliantly with delicious seasoning, but could have really done with a curry sauce. Also had the tasting flight of 3 chilled sakes with a good explanation by the staff about the origin and flavour profile of each, and which foods it would pair well with. I would be very happy to come here again, now we know which meat dishes to order for husband. Every night we walked past and it was always busy. Highly recommend if you are a sushi lover!

We had the tasting menu at Onakaya for our final night in Nice, and it was the perfect way to wrap up our trip to the South of France — our last patio dinner under the warm evening air. It’s worth noting that there are actually two restaurants here: Onakaya on the main floor, where we enjoyed the tasting menu, and Onakase upstairs, which offers a full Omakase experience that lasts two plus hours. The tasting menu was a unique experience as our server asked a few questions about our preferences and then crafted a personalized menu just for us. Every dish was beautifully presented and full of flavor. Both the food and the service were fantastic. The menu didn’t include dessert, but we were so full by the end that it didn’t matter. I’d highly recommend this spot if you’re visiting Nice — and don’t skip the sake, it was exceptional!

One of the best … Antoine was so kind , we came before the restaurant was open and we disturbed them at there break before opening and we asking if we need a reservation… and he immediately booked us for a table an hour after they opened … The service after we came was so good , the dishes came slowly to keep u enjoying your time at this amazing place.

I visited Onakaya specifically drawn by the culinary mastery of Chef Piotr Kuc. I had been a devoted fan of his sushi in Poland for years, following his journey until his triumphs at the 2024 Poland Sushi Cup and then the European Sushi Cup, which ultimately led him to Nice. And just as always, I was utterly delighted – not only by Piotr's exquisite food, but also by the impeccable service and the restaurant's beautifully designed space. The interior perfectly balances simplicity with elegance, showcasing a meticulous attention to detail and a strong, beautiful identity. It was also clear to see the owner, focused and hands-on, diligently working in another section of the restaurant, which speaks volumes about their dedication. While I eagerly await Piotr's return to Poland (and will gladly follow his talent wherever it takes him!), I wholeheartedly recommend Onakaya as a wonderfully delicious and must-visit culinary gem during your time in Nice.

A truly exceptional gastronomic experience! The taco starter and the dragon roll were my favorites. The service was outstanding—they even accommodated us after we arrived a little bit late, also served us when the kitchen had closed. Definitely a must-visit if you're in Nice

Wow, just wow. One of the best sushi restaurants I've ever experienced. Worth every penny, and worth the hype. It's not a cheap dinner, but we enjoyed it so much we went twice! We tried a variety of rolls and nigiri, and the black cod is pricey, but to die for, it was like cutting into butter, so tender and flavorful. We tried the wagyu gyozas, which were tasty, the yellowtail, salmon and tuna nigiris, the dragon roll, the yellowtail uramaki and bluefin hosomaki, and all of the sushi was fresh and delicious. I would recommend skipping the cocktails and even the dessert, these were actually the only underwhelming portions of the menu.

I found this place by chance. What a pleasant surprise. The dishes are delicious and have a slight twist from what you would expect. They taste amazing. It's a must-visit if you like Japanese food and are in Nice.
