The 15 Best Filipino Restaurants In SF - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"This South San Francisco spot turns out classic Filipino comfort food in huge portions. The sisig is near-flawless: crispy-edged grilled pork topped with onion that has just the right balance of heat and citrus. Each bite is made even better with a side of sharp garlic rice. Most dishes land in the $15-20 range and are hefty enough to feed two, so it’s a great spot for a casual group hang or when you’re in need of alone time (and some leftovers)." - gabi moskowitz, julia chen 1, patrick wong

Ordered 2 calamari here about 2 weeks ago. Under cooked. Huge let down for my daughter who used to love the calamari. This place just wants your money they don’t care about cooking the food with love and care. I used to love the sisig here but they don’t seem to care anymore for customer’s satisfaction. And it does help that prices are high. Atleast make the food with some love!!!

When we walked in, the guy in the front told us to hurry up and order because they were closing in an hour. We ordered the pork sisig and palabok, the sisig had large pieces of meat salty and not enough jalapeños. The palabok was dry, no taste and the shrimp wasn't even cook. You can tell they just threw everything on top of the noodles and they used bihon. It looked more like pancit bihon than palabok. Waste of money ended up throwing it away. You can tell they rushed our order. Terrible food and service! Never going there again!

The food is still good but it was as great when we first came here 8 or 9 years ago. We ordered halo-halo as desert, and the shaved ice is not as fine as other halo-halo places we've been to. We were craving for sisig, Ongpin's versions is too salty, could hardly taste the vinegar.

I just picked up my order online and I had a hard time with what the woman working at the place was saying because she kept telling me to confirm it in my phone and click the “red thing”, what is that red thing that she is saying, I can't see it, she took my phone and she couldn't see that red thing that she was talking about, then she told me to ask my co-worker, what does my co-worker have to do with me picking up the food that I ordered online. She’s so stupid! That woman should be fired because she is not good, I am used to ordering online and she will teach me what to do. Their service is very bad and they don't know how to assist their customers. This is my first and last order online pick-up in this area. if there is zero star that should be given to this restaurant. They should not deserve to be given even 1 star because of their terrible service. I will never return to this place.

Google
Not same restaurant from 20 years ago. Too expensive and 15% service charge added. Tapsilog had cheap very chewy meat full of fat. Crinkles cookies insanely expensive at $4 dollars per cookie!! Menu does not have crinkles and nowhere is the price posted so you get a nice surprise when you get the insane bill. Also they're closed from 2:30pm to 5pm, makes no sense. Avoid.

Google
Sorry to say but, Beef Steak was very hard. Same as the Sisig. if you can see corners of sisig pieces was over cooked from original softness. Me and my daughter ate most because no choice, we were very hungry.

Google
No frills Filipino restaurant serving all the standard favorites, from breakfast items (x-silog) to classics like sinigang, adobo, and diniguan. Portions are family size for a decent price, and the food is authentic and tasty. Haven't tried the kamayan (eat with your hands!) but that should be something fun to try if you're bored with your spoon and fork. Their approach to service is pretty laid back, but that's not a problem with this casual, local setup.

Google
Tocino was delicious. Great char and flavor. Not too fatty but good amount for very juicy delicious pork. Lechon kawalli was a good crispy, not too fatty again and I really liked it and the sauce it came with. Sisig pork - also great char and flavor here. Had leftovers and this made for amazing quesadilla filling 😂 Pancit seafood or something - looked a bit bland but I actually really liked the noodles. Had a good depth in the flavor surprisingly. Lumpia Shanghai was not bad but not as good as some other places (chibog does amazing lumpia)

Yelp
I stopped by on a Sunday for lunch last week since my homie was. Raving their tapsilog. It's been a couple of years since I've been there, so I was down. We both ordered our own tapsilog plates and some bbq pork sticks, and crispy pata. Their silog portions is pretty solid compared to most places. I also like that their tapsilog is more like steak strips compared to most places that use thinly sliced beef that taste like overcooked jerky. The bbq pork sticks weren't bad, but they also weren't Fil-Am. The crispy pata was huge and super crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. Went well with their spicy vinegar. Don't let the low Yelp ratings fool you!

Yelp
Solid Filipino food, lots of options. They have some dish variations here that I've never seen before so we ordered the Seafood Kare-Kare and Bistek Bangus Belly - super excited about this since I'm pescatarian. Everything was tasty. Friendly service. Would come again!

Lawrence B.

Yelp
I was brought their chicken bbq sticks. The container had 3 sticks and they were HEFTY! Chicken was juicy, nice char from the grill, and the sauce was sticky and not too sweet. Great job!
google avatar

Yelp
The staff was friendly and attentive. It was a quiet evening to pick up some takeout. The ambiance is casual and quiet. The food was served fresh and to eat. I would recommend for takeout Filipino food.

Yelp
Ordered party platters about 3 days prior to Christmas, for pick up Christmas morning; they were open right on time; super friendly staff and they offered me coffee while I waited for my lumpia to be completed. Ordered half trays of lumpia and palabok....lumpia very good. Palabok o the other hand may be the worst I've had...the noodles were the thin noodles and there extremely little sauce. Just skip the palabok from here folks! Lumpia is a definite. I want to try their weekend breakfast buffet sometime!
google avatar

Yelp
Got $100 worth of food and was totally disappointed. Everything was overcooked and burnt. I ordered fried chicken and instead of whole pieces, it was all overcooked wings. They tasted dirty and it seemed like they were fried in old, over used oil. The garlic was burnt in the garlic rice and the eggplant relleno was also overcooked. Even the lumpia Shanghai tasted rubbery. I do not recommend this place at all. Try any other Filipino restaurant in South City than this one.

Yelp
Had to get my Filipino fix when on this side of the Bay Area. I had the daing na bangus over rice. Perfectly marinated and cooked. Husband had the longsilog and bistek. Both were just like mom makes. We ordered several items to go and can't wait to eat it later tonight. The people running it are efficient, friendly and treat you like family. The decor reminds me of auntie's house and of being in the Philippines. Husband and I agree that everything was worth the drive from Sonoma County just to come eat.

Yelp
I love having Filipino breakfast here.I love the pinakbet, binagoongan and their crispy pata de ajillo .I love the garlic rice too. I love their halo halo also. The service is friendly and cheerful. The place can have a lot of people eating specially in the weekends. The place is somewhat older now, but it still serves some of my favorites.

Fab L.

Yelp
We always get the crispy Pata and we bring to family party, so we decided the same for Mother's Day. Was so disappointed first the price went up to $27 per order and then they literally burnt it and gave us just bones. As if they took the meat and gave it to another order and we got just the bones. When we cut in it was all dry and brittle. I'm so sad cause we loved going to this place. I guess no more.

Maria Y.

Yelp
I haven't been here in a long time, but service has improved. I tried the cheesecake ... it's ok but a bit pricey for a tiny cake.

Yelp
This is an established Filipino restaurant that's been a fixture in South San Francisco for over 20 years. (Fun fact, the location was previously a Comic Book/Card shop called Fantasy Comics in the 1990's.) Service is usually very quick and there is not a long wait. For Filipinos looking for authentic home cook-tasting Filipino food, this is definitely the place to go to. You can't go wrong with anything you choose. My personal favorites: Kare Kare Lechon Kawale Sisig Any "Silog" meal, which is a combination of Rice, Eggs, and your choice of meat. Of course, you can' leave without having lumpia! I no longer live in the area, but if I'm in town, I'll often stop by to eat or take something to go. Great for dining in, take out and they also can accommodate catering needs.

Yelp
Used to go here often 20+ years ago and it was pretty good at the time. Went the other night and was surprised to see it was still there. Not sure if it's the same owner or cook but there was evident it wasn't quite the same, didn't get a welcoming vibe. The sisig was deferent, it was as if it was reheated pieces of pork plus they separated the onions/jalapenos from the dish. The sinagang was salty not as tangy. The caldereta was cold as was the garlic fried rice. The pancit palabok wasn't as delicious before and was more a Canton style. We were the only ones there and kind of disappointed. They also didn't serve beer. That was a bummer cause would've liked a San Miguel with my meal. Oh well...got find me another place to go.

Larry V.

Yelp
Get the old chefs back and be consistent. If the isn't ready yet don't serve it. If chefs don't know how to cut and what cuts of meat to use in filipino dishes there will little flavor and tenderness. We Filipino people know what the dish should taste like if it wrong we won't waste our money on that dish again. Ongpin it takes time to find workers that have the same love that you should have for good food. If you don't care it shows and there's nothing you can do to about it. Make it right or close your doors. Care, share and be fair!
google avatar

Yelp
A sweet trip down memory for my better half as her dad used to always find an excuse to oick up food here... lomi very authentic, not very tart and tangy but squeezing the lemon helps quite a bit. Shopao, lumpia, chicheron, all nice. Place is basic but water is free.

Yelp
Typically great service, delicious authentic Filipino cuisine, and somewhat timely! My family has been coming here since 2007. My parents live close by and it's one of their frequent take out spots and or catering faves. Salamat!

Yelp
Ongpin is my family's favorite Filipino restaurant here in South San Francisco. This was also my late grandparents' favorite restaurant, introduced by my Lola's best friend in the late '90s. The ambiance is very homey with and decorated with a few Filipiniana fixtures. Everytime I eat here with my family, it brings back great memories and I'm glad their food stayed consistent through the years. My mom and I ate here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Please note since covid, they are only open on certain hours during lunch and dinner. They do close lunch at 2:30pm and their kitchen is closed by 2:15pm. Be sure to arrive on time during their business hours. My mom ordered the Sisig Silog and while I ordered Tocilog. We received our orders within 10 minutes and the staff are truly accommodating. Their tocino is not on the sticky side, but I was still impressed because it was still sweet and well marinated. Their garlic rice has generous portions of toasted garlic (I'm a huge fan of that). Their sisig (not pictured) was perfectly sizzled with raw onions and green chili peppers. We also ordered some Chicken Barbecue to go. My family will always come back to our classic favorite and we will be sure to bring our friends here for some truly authentic Filipino cuisine.

Yelp
I like one item Im buying there. I dont like the smell inside the restaurant. The bldg need to be renovated.
google avatar

Lowell S.

Yelp
For years Ongpin has been our go-to-place to order Kare-Kare......almost perfect. But things changed recently...and to our disappointment. Instead of thick paste like sauce para nalang syang malabnaw na sinabawang Ox Tail.
google avatar

Rose C.

Yelp
If you're expecting a casual restaurant, this place is not it. But if you're craving for authentic home-cooked type meal at an eatery... you're at the right place. Although the place had pretty much zero decorative efforts, it is clean. It is small but can still accommodate large parties of 10-12 people. The servers were nice and friendly. Our craving for Filipino breakfast was definitely satisfied. We had the tocilog and it was very good. They ran out of bangsilog so we end up ordering the bangus sisig entrée. The garlic fried rice had tons of garlic and was super garlicky. I'm on the fence on this one. The dipping sauces for both dishes were really good. It had Just the right touch of acidity that complemented the dishes well.
google avatar

Justin Q.

Yelp
We were welcome & greeted good. We ordered this $98 good for 4 & ordered an individual order of tocino ala cart. The menu is not updated so prices on there two menu is different. The owner was offering my parents some snacks looking like cupcakes or bred. Small portion for $11. My parents decided not to get it, she seems disappointed saying why not it's very good my daughter cooked it. When the bills came I always tell my parents to read the receipt because every restaurant might over charge you or charge you a menu you did not ordered. Oh boy being an educated person pays off, we were charge for bangus sisig but we did not even order it. The owner & the Daugther was wondering looking at our tables if we had it or ate it. Good thing there other relative is honest saying we did not order that one. Based on reading other feedback from people that dine in here is they get extra charge or fraudulent charges. So it seems like it was not a mistake at all. Lastly they also charge service charge here it does not matter if there only 1,2 or 4 or more individual dining in here. I still gave extra tips anyways. The inside seems spacious but lacked of excitement. The food was okay.

Yelp
We ordered the pork adobo, Garlic Fried Rice, Lechon Kawali...food was too salty, too dry...not the same quality of food that we experienced a while back. Staff was not friendly. Yet the service of of 15 percent was automatically charged to our bill. I cannot recommend this place. Its awful

Richard

Yelp
Not same restaurant from 20 years ago. Too expensive and 15% service charge added. Tapsilog had cheap very chewy meat full of fat. Crinkles cookies insanely expensive at $4 dollars per cookie!! Menu does not have crinkles and nowhere is the price posted so you get a nice surprise when you get the insane bill. Also they're closed from 2:30pm to 5pm, makes no sense. Avoid.

Milan C.

Yelp
Great customer service! I ordered the sisig silog and it tasted exquisite just like my grandmother's cooking! I also had the mango juice which tasted refreshing! The ambiance was quiet with leveled and good music. My mom left her purse and sweet worker ran out to our car to return it! 1000/10
google avatar

Leonora S.

Yelp
I came here when it first opened, 11AM. The quality of the Pork Adobo that we received was as if it was cooked the day before and reheated or put in a microwave. The Sinigang Bangus Belly was unsatisfactory due to the bangus tasting spoiled. The only items that were edible/ satisfactory were the Longsilog and Mango Ensalada. I left very disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
Been a long time since I was last here. Mom craving pancit palabok and don't know many places that make this dish anymore. From Yelp, saw that Ongpin still makes this dish so decided to check it out. Plenty of tables available when we arrived. Staff were slow to greet us and/or show us to a table. Took a while to get someone's attention to take our order, too. We decided on: 1) Sizzling Bangus Sisig - We were brought the sizzling pork Sisig rather than the Bangus Sisig, so had to return it for the correct dish. Took a while but we liked this dish. Although there were quite a few onions, lots of flavor. 2) Crispy pata w/ garlic sauce - crispy pieces of skin. Meat is moist. And that garlic sauce??? So good. Added it on top of everything. 3) Pancit Palabok - unfortunately, there was no flavor in this dish. However, good when eating with the Bangus Sisig as it added flavor. Did not satisfy the craving, though. 4) Garlic rice - again, brought us regular rather than garlic rice as requested, and had to get that exchanged as well. One side order of garlic rice was plenty for us to share. Despite the wrong food delivered, they corrected the order and apologized. Good sized portions and we had leftovers to take home. Would return for the crispy pata and garlic sauce for sure.

Manny Y.

Yelp
I went to order take out on Thursday, June 20 and was really disappointed. Here's what I ordered and comments on how it was Crispy Pata- it wasn't crispy at all the skin was chewy so I had to out it in air fryer for 20 minutes Kare Kare- it lacked flavor and the sauce was runny. Maybe it's a different chef but I've had better before and I can make it better than they do. It lacked peanut butter flavor, salty, savory Pancit bihon- no taste and very greasy I means tons of oil Gining gining- last time I went I liked it and this time it was missing salty flavor and soy sauce wasn't the only missing flavor. Overall it was a total failure of over$86

Kim M.

Yelp
The worst customer service. I called and asked to speak to the manager, the person on the phone said that the manager isn't there and had no clue when management would be available, then promptly hung up while I was in the middle of a follow up question. I called back and asked why she hung up on me and she played dumb. I had questions about potential food allergens in their dishes and was given a vague response. I have no confidence in this establishment.

Ronald S.

Yelp
A fave place! Delicious! Sarap na sarap! The restroom could be cleaner, though. Other than that, top notch!
google avatar

DC C.

Yelp
This place is awful. Just left there. They fried the &$)( out of the pork chop that wasn't seasoned. Seem like they days old oil. Pansit had no taste and they did season the shrimp at all. Service was cool but we will never return

Meta D.

Yelp
The three of us went there 5/20/24 at 1:30pm, since we checked their website and the closing time was Is 2:30pm. We sat there , after about 15 minutes, no one even came to our table to take our order. So I went to the cashier and said we want to order. And the waiter came to our table and said " you know that we will close at 2, right? You should just order to go". How crazy and rude that was. The website said you close at 2:30pm and we sat there 15 mt without being acknowledged. We just left. We don't recommend this restaurant , customer service is so poor , no manner at all.
google avatar

Lita B.

Yelp
Tonight we ordered BBQ chicken, Bangsilog, and Sisiglog. My son's chicken bbq was still raw, he had to send it back. It was much better on take 2. My bangsilog wasn't enough for me. It composed of fried milk fish, garlic fried rice and 2 sunny side up eggs. Was still hungry and had to eat my husband's leftovers of sisiglog which is chopped pork with onions and green chilis, garlic fried rice, and scrambled eggs. It fulfilled our Filipino food craving for the night.
google avatar

Alvin P.

Yelp
Needs better signage. Parking lot makes it look like it's closed. Ended up leaving because of this
google avatar

WilliAm A.

Yelp
Friendly service . Went for lunch before closing. I had a breakfast item , very filling and tasty. We also had the kare- kare and sizzling sisig. Both very enjoyable. Obviously took some home. $72 for 3 items ordered and steamed rice . Will be coming back. Look closely for it- it is in a closed liquor store building.
google avatar

Yelp
Used to be a good restaurant but now it's the worst Filipino restaurant, they increase their price but the quality of their food is so bad, we ordered CRISPY PATA but it's not even crispy, On the Karekare you're lucky if there's a vegetable on it, we will never never never order again at this restaurant, I wish the owner read this before their business goes bad... No wonder there's no people eating inside, used to be people are waiting outside before they could get a table , too bad....
google avatar

kyra d.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place but why does the chicken adobo taste like that? No flavor at all, I don't think they add vinegar because there's no hint of adobo in the adobo. I think what the cook did was to fry the chicken in oil and added peppercorns. I don't taste any vinegar or salt. Also the chicken tasted old and tired. 10 minutes after eating the chicken, I felt so sick and started throwing up. Also ordered the Picadillo (ground pork with peas, potatoes, carrots in tomato sauce) and it was ok. Just a bot oily. I sure hope that I feel better soon since I have to work tomorrow :(
google avatar

Yelp
Food is pretty good, standard Filipino stuff Service is quick and friendly enough It's a small business and it shows but it's not bad

Yelp
Whoever cooked this grilled beef tapa order for pick-up on the night shift- You are the man! You revived the name of the restaurant you are working for ensuring fresh beef being served with less fats. Every piece was so tender and juicy to bite. It was a 360 degrees turn from the last order which was so rubbery (sort of mix of old and new). Keep it up!

theresa r.

Yelp
I love this place because every time I call for pick up it's always ready quick and I love their sisig . I don't live around here anymore so when I am in town I always call to order sisig .

Lars P.

Yelp
The fried chicken plate brings unwanted desires to challenge my stomach.... This was To-Go m, or I would have sent back...

Yelp
When the craving for a kamayan meal is real, Ongpin is the real deal. For ~$20 with tax and tip included you can enjoy yourself a delicious and filling Filipino kamayan (eat with your hands) meal. Ongpin has an extensive menu for seafood, pork, beef, etc. along with their Kamayan meal options. The Kamayan options range from 2+ people and each option comes with sooo much food. This visit we ended up getting the option for 4 people with a side of sisig. When we ordered the staff asked if we wanted to enjoy our meal on banana leaves or on plates so I loved how they gave us the option. Not having kamayan in like 3+ years we of course had to get the banana leaves. The option for 4 people came with 4 cups of steamed rice, 1 crispy pata, 1 squid, 1 tilapia, side of tocino chicken, lumpia, salted eggs, mango slices, tomatoes, and onions. They paired the items with mang tomas for crispy pata, soy sauce/vinegar for the fish, and sweet/sour sauce for lumpia. All items were tasty and filled our cravings. We even had a box leftover to eat for later so that's how much food there was even for 4 people. Faves were the crispy pata, squid, and tilapia. OK were the tocino chicken, lumpia, and sisig (not sizzling). Staff here is friendly and pretty hands off once they deliver the food to your table. They may take a while to get to your table. Ongpin does well with their space and can accommodate large groups by moving the tables around. They have a parking lot with a couple spaces as well.
google avatar

Maryann V.

Yelp
Typically this is a good place to eat but they had terrible service today. We waited 30 minutes for our 2 orders ( Pork si-sig and Pork sinigang ) They bring the Si-Sig with steam rice, then they bring Beef Sinigang which is Not what we ordered. They said they will make the right one but it will be another 10 minutes. Meanwhile the table behind us just sat down five minutes ago and they got their food ( about 3 entrees) already with the pork sinigang that we ordered. Never come back, horrible service. I'm sorry but there is no excuse for such horrible service- no matter how busy you are.
google avatar

Geraldine C.

Yelp
The sloppiest Pancit Bihon I've ordered was non other than Ongpin restaurant. It's just a bunch and of noodles sprinkled with soy sauce sold for $14! Unbelievable!
google avatar

Liz P.

Yelp
The service was great. It was my first time at a Filipino restaurant and all of the dishes we ordered were delicious. The ube desserts were also VERY good. I will definitely come back or place a take out order.

Erica B.

Yelp
Sisig is good but they charged us twice. Once over the phone and again during pick up. Reached out to their staff a couple times and still no word back.
google avatar

Ed P.

Yelp
I must give Onpin Restaurant a a fantastic review. Three Sundays ago, I remembered Ongpin's amazing food, I proceeded to order 18 half trays of different entrees. As I said, I was not disappointed, every dish was delicious; and each tray was plentiful. In addition, the person in charge was courteous and efficient, bringing out my order with a smile, I think her name was Weng. The chef did a fantastic job of preparing the foods, kudos to him or her. I may not be a connoisseur of fine Filipino food, but I know what I like and enjoyed Onpin's awesome food, so did everyone else in our party. Excellent, Onpin, continued success to your business!

Yelp
We love supporting small business restaurants and we are glad they're still open! This is one of our favorite Filipino restaurant in the area. Everything we ate/ordered here never dissapoints. Love their sisig bangus, breakfast combos, soups and veggies! If you haven't been here yet, I highly recommend it!
google avatar

Shyanne C.

Yelp
I'm sitting inside for the first time in a while we finally get to dine it. But honestly when the old man dropped the fork on the floor he still Picked up and put it back where the clean forks were. That's gross. Kidding me. Putanginamo. That's gross dood.

Yelp
My Filipino family has been going to Ongpin since I was a kid, and for years, my aunt has been ordering from them for our family parties too! Most of the time my family is adamant about buying Filipino food since often times we can make it ourselves, but Ongpin does such a good job making trays for big groups that we appreciate the meals (especially when we're having a huge gathering for holidays, special occasions, or big boxing matches). My family's all time favorite is their sisig! I personally love how sisig retains a strong flavor and has a good level of spice. It's a staple dish that I've grown up with, and I hope the restaurant continues to thrive so that when I have children they can enjoy it too!

J.R. S.

Yelp
What is happening to Filipino restaurants around the area. Most are 2-3 stars now. Ongpin is going down the drain. Went here today to find out the Sinigang has the smallest shrimps ever. Not only that we ordered it extra sour and it came bland. I asked can we make it more sour? When it came back I literally took a spoon to taste and found four bugs in my spoon! Checked the other bowl my wife was pouring for my son, sure enough more bugs. They were small but dude bugs? Come on. I threw my spoon and said wtf. If it was one bug it's okay I guess but five? Looked closely and more bugs. Wtf. They said "it probably came from the vegetables" and I responded why don't you guys wash your vegetables. I said I'm not paying for this and left with my family. Chibog doesn't even have shrimp Sinigang and they cost $24.95 for a small bowl. Ridiculous. I'm headed to pacific super to cook my own. Horrible. Ongpin doen the drain. No wonder there wasn't a single customer. I'm embarrassed of being Filipino and being presented food this way. We can do better.
