"Oni Kuma, a new izakaya in Mill Valley, offers a menu featuring lobster, wagyu, red snow crab temaki, char-grilled meats, and a selection of small plates like gyoza and onigiri. It is operated by Chef Yasuo Shigeyoshi, also the owner of Shiro Kuma Sushi in San Rafael." - Justine Jones

Excellent! but way too bright… The food was delicious- my new favorite Japanese in Marin for sure ;) fresh, simple, authenticate but with a fun twist. The hand roll sets were a good deal, rolls aren’t too overly done and more fish forward. Nori was fresh & toasty. Clean & modern atmosphere, friendly attentive staff & quick service. My only complaint was that it was WAY too bright in there… Would’ve appreciated the dining room having half the lumen output for a better date night dining experience. Felt a bit cafeteria like. Would suggest a handful of paper lanterns or something to make it feel more approachable ;) Can’t wait to go back regardless!!

I’ve tried this place yesterday and it was a good surprise. The atmosphere very nice and cozy . I liked a lot of the hand rolls. The Japanese curry was good and tasteful unfortunately the udon it was very plain and mediocre for the price . Maybe adding some flavors more veggies and even a fish cake etc would be more tasteful and fun eating. Otherwise, I loved the place. The portions were great and the service was nice. Unfortunately in my opinion the waiting for the other dishes as the udon and the Japanese curry. Overall it was good and people were very nice .

Google
By far the best sushi in mill valley! So fresh and delicious with a great mix of the old stand by dishes as well as creative menu items. The service is fast and attentive, and it’s a fair price for very high quality sushi. We love it both for date night and for family dinners.

Oni Kuma is a new Japanese restaurant in Mill Valley. They serve Izakaya style food (Izakaya is a type of Japanese bar in which a variety of small dishes and snacks are served to accompany the alcoholic drinks). We have been a regular customer of their first restaurant, Shiro Kuma in San Rafael so we could not wait to try their new restaurant. Every ingredient was fresh as usual. Handrolls were very tasty, especially uni and crab roll is a must! Grilled pork jowl was grilled perfectly and went well with the sauce. The Japanese style steamed egg was light and melt in my mouth. We can’t wait to go try more dishes there!

I was on a day trip to Point Reyes and Mount Tam and on my way back home to Napa, I was craving sushi and saw this place and decided to go. It was the best choice I’ve made in a while. The sushi showed the dedication and respect of the chefs all while being very reasonably priced. If I’m ever back in the area or just craving really good sushi I’ll be sure to return here. I sadly ate the food before I remembered to take pictures.

Google
Service was good and the sushi was outstanding. I have eaten at many sushi restaurants, and this one was top quality. They had some of the freshest fish I have had ever in a restaurant. For reference, I have been a fisherman all my life, and on many occasions eaten ling cod, yellowtail, yellowfin tuna, snappers, halibut, salmon, mahi-mahi, and many others, straight from the ocean, and I am picky about fish being actually fresh. This place delivers. We ordered California Roll, Lotus Roll, Spicy tuna roll, hamachi kama, and (maguro, albacore, saba, unagi) nigiri - all excellent. It's hard to find good saba nigiri! Our bill with drinks came out to about $190 for three people (we ordered multiples of most of the items). Not cheap, but wow was it good! I will definitely be back.

Went in last night for the first time and we really enjoyed our food. We ordered multiple skewers , hand rolls (scallop with lemon zest was a standout), and appetizers, all of which we really enjoyed for the price. Oshitashi and agedashi tofu were really heartwarmingly soothing treats. Only recommendation would be to turn the lights down a tad, I feel like this place could be a great date spot any night of the week.

My husband and I have been here twice. The food was good and delicious. But the servers weren’t nice —we didn’t feel welcomed by the servers, and felt like they had an attitude towards us. We weren’t impressed by the service at all. The atmosphere was awesome and the restaurant was absolutely beautiful.

Yelp
This Japanese "homestyle" restaurant is one of the new bright spots in Mill Valley. I had both dinner and a second visit with a Bento box lunch. Simply put, this place is amazing. Service was excellent, the food was some of the best Japanese in Marin. Yes, the rolls and dishes rival Sushi Ran. Yep, I said it, and it's true. If you haven't seen the location, it's just to the left of Whole Foods of East Blithedale side. It does need a little lighting work to bring down the lights a bit during dinner, and it's in a shopping center..but the food and service is what matters. You won't regret giving this place a try. For me, it's my new go-to for sushi, sashimi, Rolls, and Japanese home cooking. This is one place, you want to make sure Stays in Mill Valley!

Yelp
Came here during lunch time and it wasn't busy. Service was pretty fast. Miso soup was delicious. The fish was fresh. The Wagyu nigiri pricing is wrong, we got charged $12 and not $10 like the menu said. The Wagyu nigiri wasn't that good. It was very thin and not a lot compared to its pricing and other places. The 10pc nigiri set was good! The assorted fish was amazing and the ratio of rice to fish was perfect. Our hand rolls were tasty, the seaweed was soggy and hard yo chew apart which cause everything to fall apart

Yelp
We enjoyed dining at Oni Kuma!! My friends and I were craving Asian food and the seafood in Marin County is so fresh, we opted for the natural choice of selecting a Japanese restaurant to have dinner at. I physically wasn't feeling too well, so I ordered a chicken udon. The broth is vegetarian and really delicious, I was sipping on it the entire time! It comes with kabocha, naruto, broccoli, and leafy greens. The chicken had a nice consistency considering it was boiled, but it had zero seasoning/taste to it. Very bland. My friends opted to order hand rolls (one set 1, one unagi don, and one hamachi hand roll) and they enjoyed it. Presentation at this location is really good and all our food looked incredibly appetizing. Overall decent experience, our food came out quickly and the setting is very cozy. Outdoor seating area is also really cute, but it was cold outside so we wanted to stay inside to keep warm.

Yelp
After a day of wine tasting in Napa and a stop in Corte Madera to return some stuff at the mall, we decided to try Oni Kuma for hand rolls after finding this place on Yelp. I was able to call the day before to make a reservation for two at 6:00 p.m. Due to hitting some traffic and running behind, I called the restaurant to see if we could push our reservation to 7:00 p.m. They were really accommodating and told me not an issue but we may have to sit at the sushi bar if it's too busy. Upon arrival, we were surprised to see only one outdoor table and a couple of indoor tables were occupied. We both ordered set A (three hand rolls - spicy tuna, salmon and hamachi) and also a Maine lobster hand roll and uni and crab hand roll. We also got a dynamite roll to share. The roll was the best item we had. The hand rolls came out pretty fast but sadly missed the mark. Although they were beautifully presented, the seaweed was not toasted and was soggy. The ingredients were fresh but not high quality fresh. Overall it was an average experience. The restaurant itself was clean and nice. I really like the outdoor booths they had but it was too cold to eat outside. Parking was easy since there is plenty of parking in the shopping center this restaurant is located in. Dining here makes me crave a hand roll with crispy seaweed so will need to try again soon.

Kristine K.

Yelp
Great service and nice ambiance for lunch. We both had the chirashi which was very pretty but the sushi rice on the bottom was a bit dry, so we wouldn't get it again. We would go back to try the curry or tonkatsu.

Kim G.

Yelp
This place came highly recommended. Unfortunately, the food we tried came up very short. Ordered the radish salad w/une plum dressing off the special menu. Small, sparse, fairly tasteless and very expensive. We also ordered the poke bowl from the special menu which was even more disappointing. A huge portion of white rice with a tiny amount of very small pieces of tuna and salmon - and the salmon smelled as tho it had gone bad. This dish was also expensive. We also ordered an unagi skewer that took over a half hour to come out - we thought they had forgotten us except we were there early and were the only couple at the sushi bar so they kept walking past us, would think we would be hard to forget. This 'starter' was small and also expensive - best part of the meal but hardly worth the wait and the portion. We will not be returning. There are far too many restaurants around that have far better food, service and prices. Shame.

Yelp
I came here looking for a well-deserved treat after a very long hike on a sunny afternoon. Oni Kuma quickly grabbed my attention because I love sushi and handrolls. The location is on the left side of Whole Foods, and parking is super easy, convenient, and easy to access. They have outdoor seating which was honestly very beautiful. The booths were bamboo/wooden with the walls filled with cute Japanese drawings. It was a sunny day and I had my dog with me, so it was a perfect scenario. I got Set B for the handrolls, which came with spicy tuna, hamachi, salmon, and scallops. The handrolls were good, the fish tasted fresh and I loved the toppings combination for the scallop and hamachi. Wasn't a huge fan of the tuna. I also got a shitake skewer which was super tender and flavorful. Overall, I enjoyed my experience here. The service was great, the owner was sweet and attentive (even gave some ice water for my dog!)

Gabe Y.

Yelp
Friendly service and such a cool vibe. I loved both their outdoor and indoor seating. All the ambiance was great with the posters and the booth. The sauce dishes were so cute too. We got the chicken katsu curry, the combo c, and the dynamite roll. I thought the dynamite roll was such a refresher: it was hamachi, avocado, green tobiko and this chipotle mayo sauce. I think this was a great combination and the amount of sauce wasn't overwhelming the dish. The katsu curry was great and tasted like a lot of spices. Lots of curry leaf flavor with a bit of a spicier kick than normal. Perfect on a cloudy day or in the winter. The chicken itself had a crispy coating. Combo C had a variety of fish and flavor combinations. My favorite was the tuna, watercress, ikura, and yuzu peel. Overall, nice place that's tucked away. Attentive and friendly staff.

Yelp
Popped by on a Wednesday for lunch around noon, had lots of seating available indoors and out. Outdoor seating had this nicely decorated patio, while indoor was a long sushi bar. Service was nice and iced water was served attentively. We ordered some oysters to start, which came dressed with ponzu. They were on the smaller side $8/2 Ordered 2 Japanese curries, 1 kurobuta pork and 1 prawn. Curry was more on the watery side, not thick and less dark than what we normally get at other Japanese curry places. Pork was fried nicely, and quality of the chop was nice as had some marble fat. The prawn however was not so good, prawn order came as 4pcs, each prawn was fried well, but even after being fried, prawns are very unforgiving if they aren't kept fresh as you can definitely tell on the mouth feel. For a fried prawn you always want a bouncy texture when you bite into it. This prawn however was mealy and falling apart, a sign that the prawn has seen some shit and is a bit old. Price wise for 2 came out to be around $70 for lunch, so not too affordable as a daily thing

Yelp
Came here for dinner during their soft opening. Had been looking forward to trying this place out ever since I spotted the construction. The location is convenient (right next to the Whole Foods) and there's plenty of parking outside in the lot. The restaurant has a traditional Japanese style. Service was efficient. I got the set of 4 hand rolls. All were delicious and met my expectations in terms of portion size and quality for the price. Overall, I highly recommend Oni Kuma if you're looking for a quality, mid priced alternative to Sushi Ran in Southern Marin.

Ivy C.

Yelp
Excited to be able to eat here during their soft opening. I was headed to Whole Foods for grocery shopping during lunch and decided to pop in here as I saw the soft opening sign and wanted to eat here instead of picking something at WF. Sat at the sushi bar counter. Menu looks great and kids would totally eat here. I ordered the handroll set #1 and agedashi tofu. Handrolls were yummy. I wanted to try all the different kinds. Will need to wait for next time. 3 rolls were plenty of food for me. I can't wait to come back and bring the family. I will also be back here for lunch!

Jan F.

Yelp
I did not enjoy the sushi here. See photo of what I ordered. The fish all tasted the same, fishy. They had a large selection of beers, but I will not pay $12 for one beer. Their menu selection is way to large for the food to be very fresh.

Carmela B.

Yelp
They just opened and they are amazing! Service was good and food was even better!! Definitely stop by and give them a try. We had a little bit of everything. The chicken gyoza , tempura , organic chicken teriyaki , Karaage, udon soups , spicy tuna sushi, salmon crab sushi. And finally green tea mochi ice cream. We sat outside and the seats were comfy enough. I had two little ones ( 3 mos and 5 years). We were a party of 8! Great place to visit during our roadtrip up north.

ken k.

Yelp
Maybe we just ordered the wrong things but the chawan musubi sucked, worst ever. Also the bento box was weak as heck, small portion and katsu was soggy on top of lertuce. Lol Suck was par too.

Allison S.

Yelp
We visited on a Saturday afternoon and theres plenty of parking and staff was nice and attentive! I ordered the Dynamite roll which was really delicious (I liked the chipotle sauce and unique flavors and fresh taste of the hamachi) and my boyfriend ordered the pork jowl (amazing!) and tonkatsu pork and I really liked it with the sauce, everything was very flavorful and delicious!

Sarkis K.

Yelp
This place is relatively new and in a nice area within a shopping center. The service was great with very attentive staff. Overall, the sushi flavors were good, fish tasted fresh, and they have a nice variety of beverages. We were happy with our visit and will be going again. It was nice hanging out in their patio area with Japanese decor.

Alex T.

Yelp
Good delicious food. Small portions. Service was ok for the mandatory 20% for a large party of 5 adults and 2 kids. They charge for everything - cake cutting fee $18, tea per person $5.50 x 3. Won't be going back because I can't afford all the fees on top of the cost of the meal.

Michael V.

Yelp
Discover an exquisite fusion of flavors at Oni Kuma, where the sushi experience transcends the ordinary. Here's why you'll fall in love: - Vegan Sushi: A delightful array for those seeking plant-based options. The creativity in their vegan rolls is unmatched, proving that sushi can be just as delicious without fish. - Sake Selection: Their sake menu is vast and thoughtfully curated, offering something for every palate, from the novice to the connoisseur. Whether you're into light and floral or rich and complex, Oni Kuma delivers. - North American Flair: They incorporate local ingredients, creating unique rolls and dishes that celebrate North American fish alongside traditional sushi offerings. - Must-Try Dish: The salmon collar is an absolute must-try. It's grilled to perfection, offering a tender, flavorful bite that's both comforting and gourmet. Oni Kuma rocks and the servers are very friendly :)

Thao V.

Yelp
Wow just wow! It's such a cute little restaurant tucked next to Whole Foods. From the Japanese maple tree to the outdoor seating decor it just transports you back to Japan. Everything I ate was amazing. The wagyu melts perfectly in your mouth and it's a must! A bit pricey for 3 pieces but definitely worth it! Excellent and fast service! My only wishlist for them is to get grilled squid on the menu.

Emily S.

Yelp
Went there during their soft opening, so wasn't expecting a lot. I know usually during soft openings that's when restaurants are figuring out things and making sure things are going well. I don't have that much expectation. We made a reservation for outdoor seating and the benches were so cute! Our waiter was nice and friendly! Food was good, so good I forgot to take pictures. I'd definitely go back. Something I didn't know, Oni Kuma's sister restaurant is Shiro Kuma in San Rafael! Good sushi restaurant there too! If you haven't gone there, definitely check out Shiro Kuma in San Rafael. The difference between the both restaurants is that one is focused on hand rolls and the other is more Japanese/sushi restaurant.

Ilya K.

Yelp
The upcharge for drinks is outrageous. Any way you look at it, asking $12 for a $1 (¥150) outside of an airport lounge is just wrong. This contradicts the very spirit of being an izakaya. Food was decent although very simple.

Brigit C.

Yelp
A few days ago, I discovered this Japanese restaurant, and I'm absolutely thrilled. The people running the place are friendly, the restaurant is clean, and it's beautifully decorated and furnished. Now, the most important part: The dishes are pure, honest, and incredibly flavorful. Initially, I just wanted to take a quick look at the place and try something small to get an impression. It ended with me eating four hand rolls, and I only stopped because I couldn't eat any more. I'm excited to explore more dishes on the menu. I can't recommend this place highly enough.

Hayley M.

Yelp
Such a cozy new spot! The outdoor seating is decorated nicely and added to the ambiance. My partner and I loved the chicken gyoza(the sauce is amazinggg) and the sushi rolls we shared. Their menu is extensive and we can't wait to try more. The service was very friendly and prompt which is always a plus. Highly recommend for a yummy dinner or lunch.

Rosie D.

Yelp
My husband and I went here for a date night. It was a lovely little restaurant but also loud and chaotic, with friendly but sporadic service, probably because they are still figuring things out. Soft openings tend to be like that. I had the $19 unagi don and thought it was a great value. It was served with these delicious egg shreds that almost looked like confetti and some pickled veggies (I love Japanese pickles!) We chose a mochi dish for dessert that I had never heard of, Warabi Mochi. It was very interesting, sweet and salty and savory like the the dumplings you get at the Cherry Blossom Festival in Japantown, only much softer. I want to go back for some more!

Chiara C.

Yelp
So disappointing :( I feel robbed This is my 3rd time ordering to go, and I ate there many times The servings are getting smaller and smaller :( The hand rolls were so tiny tonight and the sashimi slices so thin My first experience was exceptional now not so sure I'm not recommending it anymore

Nokiyaki D.

Yelp
OH MY GOD!!!!! This place is sooo good, I would actually kill my children in order to eat here. The food is HEAVEN!!! This best food in the world. No other place comes close!! Nowhere!!! You all need to try Oni Kuma before you die otherwise your life was wasted. Please go on Monday, there is a handsome waiter that works that day!!!

Carrie B.

Yelp
Hi - I recently ate at Oni Kuma. My companion got several hand rolls and like them very much. I was more in a cooked food mood and ordered the Hamachi Kama. It was unspectacular. Towards the end of the meal I started to get a bit of a headache. By the time I got home, the upper half of my body was reddish and I was very itchy. I googled what it could be and it was Scombroid food poisoning, also know as Histamine Food Poisoning. When "fin" fish, which hamachi is, is stored incorrectly, the flesh starts to rot and histamines build up on the skin. This is what I was served... bad, improperly stored fish!!!! If you look up the symptoms of Scombroid food poisoning, I had most of them including a racing heart rate! I took some Benadryl and most of the symptoms subsided except I ended up spending about 2 hours in the bathroom. I emailed Oni Kuma twice and never heard back from them so I am leaving this review to warn others!!

Kaethlyn R.

Yelp
I love the food that I got! The Chicken Katsu was really good, the chicken was juicy and the breading had the perfect crunch! Also had the curry with the katsu and that was great too. The spicy tuna, salmon, and shrimp tempura were equally good! Service and Ambience was great 10/10 would come back :)

Wayne J.

Yelp
Good food Nice ambiance Good service Prices competive May be a bit difficult to find for 1st timers Free parking 4 minutes off of Hwy 101

Andrew B.

Yelp
This is a newer Japanese restaurant in Mill Valley. The service was amazing, the whole staff were very attentive. The inside was very bright and open. Their menu was surprisingly large , but the staff were happy to help with recommendations. I highly recommend this place. I would say this is the best Japanese place in mill valley!!!

Leigha D.

Yelp
Very rude. I was the only one in the restaurant. And they spent the time rearranging tables instead of taking my order. so I left and will not go back.

Hieu P.

Yelp
Their foods are great! I went to their restaurant around 9pm so it is more silent in a small area and I liked it. I am little worried about their prawn in tempura. Even though I feel it was crunch in my mouth, the prawn did not smell fresh for me. Their rolls are creative but still very traditional. I just don't like the cucumber in some of the roll which makes me feel little fishy after taste. I still give them 5 stars because their service was very good. The servants are friendly and caring their customers.

Kevin D.

Yelp
Oni Kuma is an excellent addition to Mill Valley's restaurant scene. The menu is creative and the dishes we have tried have been excellent. The owners are staff are attentive and interested in providing an enjoyable dining experience. This is our new favorite place for sushi in MV.

Mikayla P.

Yelp
We visited Oni Kuma on a Sunday evening and we were greeted with quick and friendly service. We decided to sit outside and we had the whole patio to ourselves. I am a lover of Japanese curry and have been scouring the Marin (and the bay area) for the best Japanese curry, and this is definitely the best Japanese curry I have had in Marin. The kurobota pork was absolutely delicious and the breading was very well done. The curry has a really nice spice to it and I love that they have carrots and potatoes that are super tender in the curry itself. I will definitely be back to try the yakitori.

Jessica B.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised at how good this place is. It's brand new near the Post Office and next door to Whole Foods in Mill Valley. They have indoor and outdoor dining options with a sushi bar inside. The chef is from Japan. I ate things today that blew my mind. For starters I had the Lobster hand roll. This was to die for. Absolutely divine. They have a 2,3, and 5 piece hand roll set. This is so delicious. The Black Cod with miso was incredible. I had a bite of it. The Hiakeddo Oysters were amazing and the Yellow Fin Tuna Carpacciio was delicious. Pretty much everything we had was breathtakingly good and life hanging delicious. Even the miso soup was the best miso soup I've ever had. The Uni Crab hand roll was so good. The freshest ingredients executed to perfection. Wonderful restaurant!! I didn't want it to end.

Kim W.

Yelp
Happy to have such a nice Japanese place in the neighborhood. We were there twice. Menu has a variety of dishes. - Uni Hokkaido, wagyu are excellent. - Also my favorite is unagi hand roll. - Today I tried house recommended Black cod, which was a disappointment for me. Very faded taste. If it was more broiled, probably would have been a different story. - Chicken udon and skewers were decent. - Our 9m old daughter loved Chawan mushi (steamed egg with crab)

Stacey Jo H.

Yelp
The sushi was great! I really like that they use brown rice in the rolls. The ambiance outside was also very nice. We enjoyed our food and the atmosphere. Great job guys! We will be returning!!!

Jen C.

Yelp
We sat outside on a balmy evening. Beautiful outdoor setting. Lovely lighting . The service was sweet and attentive though slow due to so many customers. The food was divine, this coming from a gal who doesn't like Japanese food. We had saki, green tea, soft shell crab roll, dragon roll, unagi hand roll, lotus roll and a lovely delicious strawberry crepe dessert. I recommend this place. It was a glorious meal.

Chris T.

Yelp
We split the Chicken Katsu Curry, and the Hand Roll Set B. The curry had a delicious flavor. The portions were reasonable. The service was attentive. This restaurant has an auspicious future.

Kevin L.

Yelp
2nd Time Dining here this week - always feel warmly welcomed here, today by Hostess Dawn - tried the breaded pork tenderloin (kurobota tonkatsu) & the grilled miso black cod, both were delectable - Sir Yasu recommended the Omachi craft lager which complemented my meal nicely

Pamela B.

Yelp
A wonderful experience! Don't pass an opportunity to enjoy wonderful Japanese delights at this newly opened restaurant. Everything we tried was amazing, including the hand rolls, pork jowl, gyoza, miso black cod, and chawan mushi. We ate outside on the beautiful patio, and the service was outstanding.

DeeLite W.

Yelp
I tried them when they first opened and the menu was limited so I wanted to come back again and give it another try. This is THE freshest sushi I have ever had and I've had a lot of sushi in some great places! I had a handful of the nigiri; toro, butter fish, unagi, amaebi, hotate - all of it was so fresh! The rolls; oni and dragon - were beautifully prepared and the angry edamame and gomae cucumber are both sooo flavorful. They also use fresh wasabi which is how you know this is a great and legit place. Service was also very friendly and prompt. I highly recommend and can't wait to go back!!

Iva K.

Yelp
Great food and wonderful service. Casual location. The rolls are lovely, so is the rest of the menu. Love that they offer warrabi mochi. A nice addition to Mill Valley.

Stephen A.

Yelp
Delicious food. However, for the price, it leads a lot to be desired. I feel like it should be cheaper to be an actual izakaya or more food on a plate.

Luisa A.

Yelp
The hosomaki was half the size of normal in other places ... the chicken on the skewers was shreds, not pieces ...total waste of money ... won't go back to try anything else ... unimpressive staff

Heather L.

Yelp
The food was good but when we first walked in and greeted who seemed to be the sushi chef he ignored us. We decided to seat ourselves while waiting for the server. She finally arrived and seemed annoyed that we sat ourselves. There was one other table sitting inside and they didn't seem to get their food until after us. We ordered the fried chicken skins, fried mushrooms, Tonkatsu, curry katsu and chicken soba noodles. We came in on a Monday at 1:30pm. We did not expect a wait or to wait more than 45 minutes for our food. The food was good but not worth waiting that long for.

ed n.

Yelp
Food was very good. Fresh ingredients, well prepared, but I was surprised by two things: size of shave ice dessert, very small, and price of one small draft beer- $15!
