The 15 Coolest Coffee Shops in Dallas

"If live music and a strong cup of coffee is the combination that does it for you, this is the spot. This underground (literally, it’s in a basement) coffee shop has a ‘90s college hangout vibe that’s eclectic and maximalist. And all sorts of local singer/songwriters perform here." - Courtney E. The 12 Best Dallas Coffee Shops and Cafes for Getting Work Done

"This basement-level coffee shop is a cozy spot any time, but it really comes to life in the evenings, when the soft lights glow, and acoustic performances by singer/songwriters sometimes take to the stage. Working after hours here is a treat when it serves either caffeinated options or beers and wines with light bites." - Courtney E. Smith

"Every town needs an arty coffee shop with open mic night and free Wi-Fi—with eclectic décor, oversize couches, and great coffee, Opening Bell is straight out of central casting. While the extremely full entertainment calendar makes this more of a daytime study location, there are plenty of tables, so you can find a seat even late in the afternoon. You'll also find all the requisite snacks and drinks, including a long tea menu, doughnuts, and a weirdly good breakfast taco."

I literally can't say enough about how amazing this place was! And not just the place, but the all-around atmosphere and most importantly the people... the other patrons were all so talented, kind, and welcoming, and the staff were just the best!!! Especially Sol, what a bright and shining light! "Thanks for the amazing Spiced Chai Latte, I have a new favorite drink now." I am in Dallas for a few days promoting my book and was looking for spots that held open mic poetry events and when I called to check what day the opening bell held theirs, it just so happened to be that afternoon and I was able to attend. I knew right away that I was right where I was supposed to be the moment I walked in! So very glad I found this place!

Google
Best coffee shop in Dallas! Super hip and cozy environment. The open mic night attracts tons of amazingly talented local musicians! Great spot to hang out on your laptop or to chill with friends. When you finish loading up on caffine, check out the wine and beer list! The food and snack selection is also worth trying! Not many coffee shops in town stay open as late.

Note: Reviewing as a coffee shop, not live music venue. If coming for coffee shop, note that during live music events there is sometimes a charge (not sure if it’s every time, but when I was there it was $15 to stay once the live music started, I wasn’t there for the show, so I had to leave). I love the ambience and decor style here and the drink menu has a lot of options. Comfortable seating options for relaxing, reading, studying, hanging out. I like that they stay open late, although I was bummed when I had to either pay a cover charge or leave once the live music started (I had arrived before that and ordered my drink without being told that I’d have to pay or leave shortly, so I was already seated with my drink and book and all, and then when the music started someone came and said I either needed to pay for the music or leave). One reason I like the location is that it’s easy walking distance from the DART station (Cedars station, red & blue lines).

Wow. This place is spectacular. Food is spectacular, drinks are phenomenal, staff is so gotdang rad! 🥰 Oh man, Samson hooked me up, cool people that guy. Legit, high key recommend Opening Bell! The atmosphere btw? Cozy, cool, and calm. 💜💜💜

Google
Popped in here for coffee during a stay in Dallas for work. The atmosphere is nice and the coffee is great. What really made my visit special was the staff! They were friendly and helpful. My 2nd day getting coffee Thea said HEY. You were here yesterday! It immediately made me feel like I was important! Being nice to everyone doesn’t cost anything but gives you everything! The next time I come to Dallas for a meeting, I will definitely come back for my morning Joe!

Google
I’ve been coming here for well over 10 years. The pandemic was hard on them but they survived! Lord knows how. They are building back up with live music (singer songwriter style mic nights), great coffee, tea, beer and wine and breakfast and soups a sandwiches. All yummy! Go support this local treasure in the basement of the building. Enter from the street between the lofts and the Canvas hotel.

Google
I’ve been here a few times and recently I’ve been disappointed with the quality of the food and service. I ordered a matcha last time and it tasted extremely watered/milked down and it barely had any ice in it. Today I got a smoothie and I could tell that they weren’t sure how to make the smoothie and were having trouble with the consistency. The smoothie separated as soon as I walked out of the coffee shops and had barely any flavor just syrup and ice. I ordered a Kolache with it and it was stale and tasted like it had been sitting there for a few days and had reheated it. I’m disappointed, especially since I used to really like the coming here and the quality used to be good. Also, my smoothie was covered in coffee ground in the lid and bottom of the cup.

Google
This place brews the smoothest cold brew in town! The baristas are super friendly, and the cozy vibe makes it perfect for morning work sessions. Don’t skip their croissant, it’s flaky perfection. My go-to spot for a caffeine fix! 10/10 for taste, environment, ambiance, & customer service!

Yelp
What a hidden jewel! We were planning on eating at another place nearby but running late for the music show so I looked up this place on Yelp to see the food options, which had good reviews but more about the coffee and breakfast. I called in and spoke with a nice gentleman who went over the dinner options. FYI, you have to get the correct phone number from their website since the one on Yelp is old. We split and shared a chicken salad sandwich and a turkey sandwich. They have several sandwiches and bread options. We decided on wheat toast for both and they were super delicious! You can easily say they take pride in their sandwiches with homemade ingredients including making their own pickles. They were well stacked and filling. Julie, the owner, helped us nicely match with some Belgium beer and white wine. She was super friendly, informative, and a big reason why we enjoyed our visit. We finished off with some lava cake a la mode, and again delicious! Somehow I didn't get to eat my half though . The band we saw was awesome and the sound and audience created a perfect atmosphere. It was an acoustic set by Kelly's Lot from California and the guitarist, Perry, is from Texas and they could play the blues really well. There was also a younger gentleman who joined in playing a cajon on a few of the songs which was a nice surprise. And even the audience jumped in a few times singing along and clapping to the music. It was such an enjoyable ensemble. I highly recommend checking out the music and dinner. It's a great experience!

Yelp
I can rarely tell a difference between coffee shop coffees, but I know for sure they have good coffee. They WANT you to like their products, and you can tell! They're always happy to help and it's a great place to relax or get some work done.

Yelp
Santa has come and gone. He's back snuggling with Mrs C. Spent the day running errands and buying more stuff for someone who may not be named. And close to my bedtime, my babe mentions a shindig in downtown Big D. So why not. No work tomorrow. Very trendy spot on Bothan Jean. Black Eye is a great blend with a nice caffeine kick. If you are in the dessert mind, go Key Lime. They need some parking but other than that, fun evening spot.

Yelp
My Friday 12/20/24 I had the breakfast sandwich, recommended by the staff. It was good, and i wanted a slice of the merry berry pie that i shared with my work bestie. The crust was tasty and flaky in my opinion. Delicious. I came here to have a little caffeine and Christmas spirit. The ambiance, they have an artsy Christmas tree decorated with ornaments designed by OBC patrons. I took pictures and videos, I thought this was very cheerful.

Yelp
Great coffee and sandwiches, friendly staff, and chill environment. Recommend the turkey sandwich

Yelp
Checked this coffee shop today and really liked the vibes. It's spacious inside and also has a stage for live music. It looks like they regularly have local music acts swing by, so I would be interested to come back for a show because the coffee shop + music vibes = my favorite. :) I got the Texas Maple Pecan drip coffee and it was pretty tasty - not overly sweet with the maple and not too overpowering with the pecan flavor. There's a couple of other drip coffee options in addition to your standard coffee shop options (lattes, cappuccinos, chai lattes, etc.). Overall I enjoyed my visit to Opening Bell.
google avatar

Amber L.

Yelp
So cute inside! The coffee is super delicious and the workers are friendly. They offer local beers too, which is fun 10/10
google avatar

Ryan J.

Yelp
It shouldn't take over 30 minutes to get coffee when there's only two customers in the whole place. When I finally got my coffees it was wrong and I'm not gonna lie, I've had a better latte from McDonald's..
google avatar

Eveline S.

Yelp
Good coffee, service and ambience! This place is a nice to hang out, study or work. They have pretty big space and cool decorations
google avatar

Yelp
I really enjoyed this hidden (hidden!) gem of a coffee shop in downtown Dallas. Parking was a bit hard to find - I ended up in a metered space on the street. This place is in the basement of a residential building. I walked through an underground passage to find the shop tucked away in a corner behind a gym, art space and next to a bodega. Even though the coffee house is underground, it was brightened by some street-level windows. The space was cozy and cluttered. I had a cafe au lait and a cinnamon roll and enjoyed the artsy vibe.
google avatar

Tony D.

Yelp
I found street parking and wondered around the building complex and enjoyed the different things like stock certs, different posters and random art throughout the place. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, quiet on a sunday. Its a very okay cup of coffee, with their balanced sweetness with the 1833 syrup. The coffee felt more watery then I would like. Came out to be around the $7 mark for an iced oatmilk latte with vanilla. Unsure if i would ever go back, they do serve an espresso milkshake type deal that did get my attention.
google avatar

Porcsha L.

Yelp
I work in the building where this coffee shop is and I and my coworkers go at least once a week! We are like family with the staff. They're very nice, and always make our drinks and food with love and care!! Please make sure if you ever stop in, try the Carmel & Mocha Cooler! It's the best

Yelp
Stopped by Opening Bell Coffee in the basement of the South Side of the Lamar Lofts in Downtown Dallas to use our coffee passport. Outside, parking can be a little difficult, but if you turn down Belleview Street, free parallel parking is available at the end of the road. I tasted Noble Coyote Roasters' Barking Dog drip coffee, which has a flavor profile of chocolate, caramel, sweet, and mellow finish. The coffee shop was unexpectedly big and the drip coffee was great. This location would be ideal for a concert and some beverages or coffee.
google avatar

Katy G.

Yelp
ENVIRONMENT: Located in the basement of a commercial + residential loft, this spot has a cool vibe with lots of stringed lights on the ceiling and a soft playlist for background music. I came to work during the day and there are about 3 outlets on the wall that you can plug into and find a table near by. Good lighting from the windows and Wi-Fi works well. COFFEE: I got a drip coffee with oat milk and the temperature wasn't as hot as I prefer but the taste was still good. PARKING: If you aren't familiar with the area, parking might seem confusing. On the caddy corner to the coffee shop entrance, there is a retail lot where you can find parking. However, if you come in the evening when there's a concert at the near by venue, parking might be harder to find.

Yelp
I just adore this place. Admittedly, I may be bit biased as this would be one of my first re-acclimating spots back to Dallas. I have beast-moded here - laptop in tow. It would also be the home for a monthly show I first took witness to and have since had the honor to be a part of for the last, nearly, two years. Ps: It's every first Friday. Stop by and say hi! Located in the basement of Southside on Lamar, this spot is landmark in its own right. Many an up-and-coming musician have found their stage legs here and with good reason. They've hosted one of the longest running music mics in town. A stone's throw from Gilley's & Poor David's Pub, it holds its own right on Lamar Street - aka music row. Pascale, the owner, is a peach and continues to educate herself on the latest and greatest on coffee (ie Counter Culture style). Love a female founded a led spot. Being her monthly has afforded from a nice trip around the menu. From peach salsa to quiche, to coffee to kombucha, they've got it all. Parking may prove a bit challenging pending if Gilley's is using the comp'd lot outside it's doors. Budget in some extra driving time. The overall feel of it is jazz hub, or underground cellar, you'd see in Nola or Chicago. The host other cool events, too. Enjoy!
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
I stopped here while waiting for my daughter to be done with an event, and I was very pleased. The quiche was delicious (on the small side, but it IS a coffee shop & not a full blown restaurant), and the mango smoothie was so tasty. The quiche was hearty and flavorful and the smoothie hit the spot! The vibe is 5 stars - very eclectic, industrial, and music-inspired. When live music is playing, this seems like the spot to be.
google avatar

Justine H.

Yelp
A neat little hole in the wall. It's very open and they have a good selection of drinks and food. I got a chai latte and it was a good inbetween a spicy and sweet chai. Worth a visit if you're in the area.
google avatar

Nicole A.

Yelp
Was really looking forward to finding a hole in the wall but not impressed with the quality of their matcha nor fresh baked selections. The croissant I ordered was soggy and the matcha lacked in authenticity. It was super watered down and bland. The atmosphere is nice to study in and hang out but overall wasn't a fan.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
Great service. Cute ambiance and the venue hosts live music. Coffee was bold and delicious.

Yelp
Come for the coffee, stay for one of the evening entertainment sessions. A couple girlfriends and I met up at Opening Bell and enjoyed food/ drinks while being engaged by their evening act(s) on their stage. The café itself feels so quaint and artsy with it's tiny stage, exposed brick that you can see on the outside, and intriguing pictures adorning the coffee shop. I ordered a London fog with oat milk which, at their coffee shop, comes with vanilla and lavender. I like my drinks a little stronger so I ended up asking for more lavender which they graciously added in; it was a subtle, sweet, drink that I slowly sipped down throughout the performance(s). Although I'd love to see a decaf coffee option/ slightly stronger tea in future, the environment as well as the staff made this experience blissful and I'd gladly come again and overlook that just to be able to savor the Opening Bell experience. Thank you, Opening Bell, for providing a low-key nook to settle into!
google avatar

Kayla V.

Yelp
We stayed across the street at the Kanvas hotel, we just wandered in early one morning. Very cool coffee shop. I ordered a sugar free latte and avocado toast. The latte was one of the best I've ever had! Toast was mediocre. I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone!
google avatar

Darrion H.

Yelp
Pretty cool spot. Food is fairly priced. No complaints. Will come again if I'm in the area. They seem to have a lot of regulars. That's a good thing.
google avatar

Annie O.

Yelp
This place is so cool!!! Hidden gem for sure. All the vibes and atmosphere you could want. Yummy nummy coffee, drinks, food and desserts! Open mic night Saturday. Breakfast tacos Tuesdays only
google avatar

Nancy O.

Yelp
Great vibe and awesome breakfast tacos! I didn't feel cool enough to be here but no one noticed.
google avatar

Christina K.

Yelp
Love the ambiance of this coffee shop. The hot apple cider was perfect on this cold day.
google avatar

India D.

Yelp
Just ok lived in one of the lofts above and tried it once. I wasn't a fan of the strawberry cake which they outsource. It was dry and take like it cane out of a box.
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
The strawberry cake is pretty damn awesome. Had a slice this morning with an oat milk lavender latte. I woke up with a sweet tooth and this stuff hit the spot. Wish I wasn't in a hurry cus OBC is so cool I would've wanted to hang in the shop for a while.
google avatar

Jana R.

Yelp
Best coffee shop in Dallas. It is in the basement of an old warehouse bldg that are now loft apartments. Funky and comfortable. They also serve some breakfast and lunch items and serve wine and beer in the evening AND (yes, there's more) have live music most weekends. Truly a treasure and not to be missed - iced coffee milkshake drinks and smoothies too- strawberry cake is delicious!
google avatar

Daniel T.

Yelp
A nice setup with interesting decorations. The waitstaff is efficient and friendly. The coffee drinks are good as well.
google avatar

Isela V.

Yelp
Very helpful people work here! They answered my million questions about their coffee and provided additional information of their vendors. They cappuccino was great! The shop is quaint and has plenty of seating for a small group. We visited when there was not much of a crowd therefore it was quiet and study/reading accessible.
google avatar

Kurt V.

Yelp
What a fun and casual place this is! Came here because my son was playing as part of the live music and have to say, this place is easy to "take in". When looking for the place know this...it is in the basement of South Side on Lamar. My GPS took me a bit past the place when I came but luckily I figured it out pretty quickly. It is rated pretty high by local media: "Best places to watch live music in DALLAS"-Guidelive "Top 10 Places to Find Live Music"-The DALLAS Observer "Best Coffee Shop in North Texas"- WFAA Channel 8 "Top 10 Coffee Shops in DFW"-Zagat And the list goes on, but you get the message.

Ai Vy N.

Yelp
We came here on a spur of the moment cuz I was getting sleepy, and we still had a long night ahead full of events, plus I wanted to continue on my quest to "conquer" every coffee shop in the metroplex that offers coffee art lol. It took us a lil while looking for parking since I didn't feel like paying to park for just about an hour. Luckily, we found a good spot almost right across the street, after driving around the area for about 10mins. Without reading the reviews prior to coming here, I was surprised to see that the coffee shop is located in the basement, not your typical coffee shop with an outdoor/patio seating. For some weird reasons, it was a nice change for me, to encounter something different like this. It's a small, cozy coffee shop, with some comfortable sofa chairs that a few of the customers seemed to take full advantage of that and got cozy up with their SO. There are also some small wooden tables that would sit 4 people and a long one. We opted for the long table since it wasn't that crowded, as well as to be a little farther away from everyone else to continue our girls talk lol. Their coffee was decent. However I was disappointed to get my first cup of coffee without any coffee art in it. It was probably made by the new barista that's still in training. My second cup was a little better, with what looks like some kind of coffee art, tho i couldn't tell what it was lol. To add to my surprise list about this place, apparently they had live music that night (or possibly during the weekend). Even better, the singer was playing on an acoustic guitar and she got amazing voice. I thoroughly enjoyed it up until some lady came over and asked us to lower down our voice. Not sure how loud we were talking, the fact that I had a hard time hearing what my friend was saying here and there, and so did she, since we both were trying not to be too loud. The lady was very nice and polite about it, so it wasn't a biggie, but it was cue for us to go and move on to the main event of that night. Overall, I will definitely come back here one of those nights that they have live music again. This place gives me a nice, cozy feeling. It'd be perfect for a cold, windy night when I don't feel like sitting outside and just want to snuggle up close and personal with a special someone and sip on my cup of coffee, listening to some slow songs :).
google avatar

Marcy F.

Yelp
I loved this place! Great coffee, great food, great staff, great atmosphere. The only suggestion I would have for improvement is their hours (they open to late for a coffee shop as far as I'm concerned) but I'm also not the business owner so I can't really say what's best for them. Will definitely return as often as possible.
google avatar

Alan C.

Yelp
Very nice coffee place with live entertainment at times. I enjoyed their Chai latte but they have sweets as well. I suggest this for first dates and just getting away by yourself. Easy to find as its opposite of the Canvas Hotel. ENJOY!
google avatar

Regina L.

Yelp
If I had a coffee shop like this near me, I'd come every morning to grab a cup of vanilla chai latte (this is SO GOOD here) and read a book in a cozy nook. Great vibe here and cool decor - little neon signs, photos of musicians and records on the wall. They also have chess and other games set up at some of the tables. This is a great stop if you're passing through Dallas and a hidden gem for the locals! Open mic nights, performances, etc take place here in the evenings. Definitely coming back, if at least just to try their fresh pies, which look amazingly delicious.
google avatar

J. L.

Yelp
Lucky enough to have caught Pentley Holmes playing on a Sunday morning. Eclectic and quaint spot. Plenty of seating. Unfortunately over-priced menu.
google avatar

Erica A.

Yelp
I love the inside of this place! Super chill place to have a cup of coffee. Located down in the basement but easy to find. They have lavender syrup, which I always love at a place, and I ordered a lavender latte but didn't taste any lavender. Maybe she forgot to put it in? Disappointed. The coffee was just okay, definitely not the best I've had but I do love the atmosphere. I also feel their prices were a bit high compared to other coffee shops. A hot chocolate, small latte and avo toast was $22. Yikes.
google avatar

Christa M.

Yelp
Monday morning 8am. Breakfast taco sausage egg and cheese, delish. The tortilla is steamed making it so soft. Eggs are fluffy and seasoned well. Mocha caramel is where it's at. The cafe is tucked into the basement in a small corner of the bldg across the steel from NYLO hotel. Cute decor, vintage. 100% recommend.
google avatar

Vito C.

Yelp
The simple drip coffee was delicious. Much better than usual, I'll go back and try something more interesting this week based on that . Sandwhich was good and simple, exactly what I wanted. Overall though it was the environment that pushed it up from 4 to 5 , definitely a place I'd recommend anyone to go to. I'll be back within the week
google avatar

Zain K.

Yelp
My coffee was just okay (I may have gotten the last of the pot), but are coffee shops even about that anymore? To the extent they're not, this place is fantastic. They have a clear community orientation, hosting local musicians and other events, and a comfortable, casual vibe that makes it easy to while away a couple hours getting work done.
google avatar

Chuck C.

Yelp
Great little quite coffee shop in the basement of Southside on Lamar. Great coffee and atmosphere. I saw a lot of signs for live music however I visited in the middle of the day and didnt get to enjoy any music. We grabbed a coffee and then walked through the Artist's Quarters in Southside. Great little Sunday adventure :)
google avatar

Leena J.

Yelp
Love this spot- only the second time I've visited but they are truly a gem. Nice guy making coffee, great friendly smile and coffee was smooth and silky. We sat outside the shop and my friend drew with chalk and we chatted with a fun couple Waldo doodling with chalk. Fun little coffee break.

M B.

Yelp
Cute vibe, but unfortunately it took 30 minutes to get 2 chai lattes, and they weren't busy at all.
google avatar

Luis H.

Yelp
Enjoyed the coffee and breakfast items. Staff was very friendly with a very warm and peaceful environment. Great place to start your morning.
google avatar

Lorelei F.

Yelp
So I just ordered a tea and asked them to step for six minutes. This is how I've always ordered my tea. The girl at the register turns to the barista and says hey she wants six minutes. The barista (shaved head shorter young girl) then starts mocking me and says oh not five minute not seven minute specifically six. Is this good customer service and how someone working behind a counter should treat a paying customer? For record, tea is supposed to be steeped then the loose leaves should be pulled for best flavor - you do not leave tea bags in tea while consuming. Never again will be back. Shameful that a place this cute could have employees that disrespectful.
google avatar

Sandra M.

Yelp
This shop feels like a well-kept secret- since it's hidden in the basement but the ambiance is amazing. Definitely better suited for people who like the hipster vibe, they have cool lights, knick-knacks, and art, and the open mic nights range from average to great. Every time I visit, I have a blast taking in the atmosphere and listening to stand up or music. Parking is free and the coffee is averagely priced for the area. If you like checking out new places and taking a chance on entertainment, then this place is definitely worth the try!
google avatar

Eric O.

Yelp
Nothing wrong with this little coffee shop. Nice people. Reasonable price. You could probably spend an hour in here looking at everything. Strawberry cake looked good but was way to early for cake. I'll be back!

Sam S.

Yelp
I sure like this coffee house. It's in the South of Lamar building. Wine, beer, tea, coffee, sandwiches, pastries, etc. Free wifi. Live music sometimes. They have board games to play. The folks working there are so friendly. Tons of free parking.
google avatar

Andre F.

Yelp
Very rustic and hipster, with a huge amount love added. Never have I've been to a cafe, where the baristas genuinely happy to by apart of something so wonderful. The product here is fresh and prepared with the upmost quality and profession. Verly charming place to visit, connect, and be emotional. Love it, must come and vist
