17 Black-Owned Coffee Shops Across LA

"At Leimert Park’s Hot & Cool Cafe, owner Tony Jolly is working to build a community through coffee. Originally from Washington D.C., Jolly works with farmers directly to increase their visibility in the specialty coffee marketplace, like a 50-acre, woman-owned farm in Ethiopia whose beans he now imports to their storefront on Degnan Blvd. In addition to lattes, breakfast burritos, and house-blended loose leaf teas, Hot & Cool has also partnered with the non-profit MISLA, to create a youth program that provides training and mentorship in tech, media, and design. Available for takeout and delivery, call (323) 903-6449 or place an order through their website." - kat hong

Absolutely amazed by this space and the beautiful people that run it. This space is exquisite and offers plenty of cozy spaces to unwind. I added Buffalo cauliflower to my bowl and it was delicious. I’m a solo traveler so finding gems like this give me hope for this wild world. Thank you, Ora, for being a vibrant light for the community and serving heart made, nourishing goodies. 🌹 Stay connected with me and the adventure 💛@FlyFreeSarahNicole

This place is nice, beautiful and clean. Loved it! Came in to do some work but didn’t realize they close at 5pm so instead of working, I just ate. And everything was SOOO delicious. I have many allergies (lactose, preservatives, etc) and this place was the best option I could’ve chosen to walk into. Honestly would go back and try more items on the menu!!

UPDATE: During Kwanzaa 2024, I decided to embrace its principles by having a business meeting at the newly reopened ORA formerly called Hot and Cool Café. The establishment has undergone significant improvements and features a fresh look with the same owners. I ordered the Green Eggs burrito, and it was delicious. We experienced extra-mile service by the new business manager, AI mara’at. Thank you. I loved the old Hot and Cool Café, and I love ORA even more. The atmosphere is filled with creativity and positive energy. The walls, floors, and decor all reflect cultural pride and a sense of community. The food is absolutely scrumptious, and everything I've tried has brought my taste buds to ecstasy. It's rare for me to eat out and not feel the need to add seasoning. You can truly feel that the food is prepared with a lot of love. Recently, I brought my family from Texas here for brunch, and they couldn't stop thanking me while praising their meals. The children enjoyed the vegan sliders and finished everything, while the parents fell in love with the vegan nachos and appreciated the generous portions. My wife ordered the Soul Bowl and wished she could have had more. I opted for the vegan breakfast burrito, which was completely satisfying. The family also loved the flavors of their smoothies, and they even tried to get the recipe so they could replicate it back in Texas. I highly recommend the Hot and Cool Café in the legendary Leimert Park Village. When you visit, be sure to tell them Omar sent you!

Google
I don’t live in LA so as an entrepreneur I look for places to hold meetings and work. The food is delicious here and the price point is a bit high but it’s vegan so I get it. This place is cute with a great outside big picture window view. So I drove from Carson to come today just for a delicious coffee cake and smoothie. I even invited someone else and they ate too. Stayed for maybe an hour. As my battery began to die on my laptop and unfortunately my cell too. I needed to plug in. The plugs are limited. The plugs I used before in the nooks were now unavailable! I’m desperate to get some juice soon to keep the project flow. OK so Im trying to find a plug so I find the one upfront. I was the only one sitting there so I plugged used both to try to get some work in. I was the only one sitting there. As the lady before me was using two outlets since before I arrived. Hadn’t planned to use both long. Just enough to get back up and going. A non paying person came in and asked me to use it and I simply pointed him to the other one in the corner. He went over and plugged in. No problem. Then who appeared to be the owner /manager asked me to use one. I expressed I’d move if someone needed it. At this point it was said that I could use it for 30mins more minutes. While two other ladies have been plugged in since before I arrived. I was confused. As a former coffee shop owner in Texas. I’ve never had issue with customers sit all day. They plug in!! It’s one of the coffee shop features. Most people work remote and will drink coffee and snack all day. But I guess in LA it’s different. So in short. It may not matter but I won’t be back. Not even for the great coffee cakes. Not being petty, just choosing to not support since electricity is such a huge issue with this ever busy coffee space. I’d hate to be the cause for any issues. It’s was fun while it lasted. 15 cents per outlet per day! Yea I looked it up because I looked it up for my own shop so it wouldn’t cause me to have someone experience what I did today over less than 15cents . Oh and I was told that all electrical outlets will be UNAVAILABLE soon! That’s crazy yo!

Google
Minding my black owned business and came across this jewel! You know the vibe is going to be amazing when you walk in to the owner burning sage. I was amazed at the dope energy in this place! So inviting and truly refreshing! Their menu was short and perfect — range feat a few specialities. The place was clean CLEAN and the art on the walls, the floors, and the building added the most fun touch. I ordered a Mocha with Almond-milk and it was truly the best one I’ve had since my visit to LA! What a gem of a cafe in the heart of South LA. I can’t wait to come back!

Yelp
What a hidden gem. Stumbled across this coffee shop while trying to go to the one across the street that was randomly closed. Serendipity at its best. The cafe is in a beautiful open space that just relaxes you the second you step in. Ton of seating and cool books on the shelves. The coffee was fresh ground and had such fun, creative twists to it. I got the lavender cold brew and it was perfect. Apparently there are jazz nights too, can't wait to be back!

Yelp
Pros: Everyone's really kind. Wifi works well. I miss some Hot and Cool classics, and still do like the new menu. Music is niiiiice. Energy is superior to Harun. Cons: Closed on Sundays. At the least there's live jazz the last Sunday of each month for a small fee. I was skeptical at first, but so pleased to learn Ora is owned by the very same owners of the late Hot and Cool Cafe.

Yelp
The atmosphere, customer service and healthy drink and food options are the best! Honestly, I will return for the relaxed environment. Never a bad thing to support small businesses.

Yelp
The cup contains my fave from this spot, perfectly crafted golden milk (with almond milk) and an amazingly beautiful and tasty avocado toast!!! @oraenergy I am so grateful for this offering. They also have amazing vegan pastries too!!!

Yelp
The space is really beautiful. There's parking out front, but I walk so not sure how it is during busier times. The cubby areas are cute but uncomfortable for working. They have other areas that I prefer for work (seating with back support). There were a lot of outlets and the wifi connection was good enough for video calls. This was my first time back in the remodeled space. I got an herbal tea drink (the Spirulina, it's sweet with lots of cinnamon). My notes: I wish they opened earlier than 9am and the AC was up really high for my preference (it was a cooler day)

Yelp
Amazing vegan food and smoothies. I had the Chix quesadilla and the mango ginger slushie.

Yelp
Popped in randomly after I got off the metro and wow... best pistachio matcha latte I've ever had and I've had a TON!!

Yelp
Finally made it over here since they've remodeled and revamped into ORA. Stopped in for a smoothie, I was going to get it to go but I loved the ambiance so much that I decided to stay and order a wrap as well. The egg wrap sounded soooooo good and after the cashier confirmed it was, I went with that and the berry smoothie. Both were perfect! I will definitely be back this week and next and the next! Great place to work, read a book, have a meeting, Sip a smoothie, people watch just all around good vibes. Oh, and they have jazz the last Sunday of each month.

Yelp
Beautifully designed space, very classy yet warm ambiance. Nice selection of food and beverages--the coconut curry soup is especially delicious. Friendly & fast service. Highly recommend stopping by here if you're in the area. I was here for a special event but could totally see spending a morning/afternoon here with my laptop just enjoying the vibe getting some work done or having a nice daytime date.

Yelp
The coffee here taste like Starbucks. The service was great though. Surroundings are nice but do better with the coffee and old warmed up muffins

Yelp
Seriously the most beautiful cafe I have ever gone to. The rose latte is especially delicious--not overly sweet.

Yelp
The green wrap will make you a repeat customer. Zen-like energy pursing Ora's books and albums (album covers art work) while waiting for your order and then before you know it, it's ready. Did I say the green wrap is epic(?)!

Yelp
Great food, amazing vibe, friendly staff, gorgeous interior space. Can't wait to come back for live jazz the last Sunday of each month.

Yelp
Ambiance and design are 10/10! My new work from home cafe. I love the study nooks. The 'pick me up' juice is refreshing, looking forward to trying the coffee and bowls. Abundance of parking out front which is a huge plus

Yelp
Very nice vibe for hanging out or working. Coffee - they have interesting flavors if you want to try something different. Vegan food if you want to try something different. Good service. Very clean.

Yelp
So glad I stumbled upon ORA during their soft opening in December. This used to be Hot & Cool Cafe and it received a much needed face lift! It looks amazing inside and the vibe is much more welcoming and cozy. The staff was super sweet and accommodating the day I went; they really know the community. I used stop by Hot & Cool often for the coconut curry lentil soup (over rice) and was delighted to be able to still order it at ORA. I also enjoyed a berry smoothie and a golden milk latte with oat milk a few hours after. Some things on the menu have been removed or added since the update. Can't wait to frequent the refreshed space and see what else they're improving.

Yelp
I had to get some work done I'm so glad I found this spot! Plenty of outlets along the wall, nice atmosphere. The Barry White Latte, bomb. (It's berry-flavored, I stepped outside my comfort zone with this one!) The green eggs wrap, fire. Ambiance, excellent. The general manager- I won't butcher the spelling of her name- but she's got a beautiful spirit and welcoming energy. The music and volume of it, perfect. I'm looking forward to coming here again when I need to be productive online but need to get out of the house. Ora's a gem!

Yelp
I stopped by to get something cool to drink in this hot LA weather. Once I entered, I noticed that it is super cozy and very welcoming. I could take a nap here. I bought an iced lavender latte and it definitely hit the spot. The cashier was very nice and informative about their menu. She said it'd take 5-7 minutes, but I think it was done sooner than that. I really like how creative they are with their flavors. I'm coming back for sure!

Yelp
Really nice cafe in a convenient area. Tasty coffee and delicious (vegetarian) bowls.

Yelp
Ambience amazing Food: I liked the menu better when it was Hot & Cool For the price, it was far from amazing to me and had some odd mixes of spices.

Yelp
food, service and ambiance is always on point. the food is good, the drinks are amazing and the staff is super sweet!

Yelp
This was one of the best matcha lattes i've had in LA that I didn't make myself. Not too sweet, well balanced and silky. Excited to try their coffee and food. Amazing ambiance, great working or reading spot with lots of natural lighting and very friendly service.

Yelp
It is a beautiful space, with good food, and good coffee, and the staff are wonderful. So glad they did a facelift, we need places like this in our community- walking distance from my home, I love it!
