"Orchid Thai was a community-driven beacon in its neighborhood. Its closure left a significant gap in the local hospitality industry." - Serena Maria Daniels

Here are the saddest Detroit restaurant closures of 2023, according to Detroit media experts - Eater Detroit

"Orchid Thai, located in Lower Woodward, was a casual eatery known for its pad thai and had been a staple for downtown office workers on lunch break. The restaurant closed following an 18-year run, with the last day of service on Tuesday, February 28. Owner Ally Lee expressed mixed emotions about the closure, mentioning her anticipation for a vacation and exploring new opportunities, while also missing the routine of seeing longtime customers and supporting her staff. Lee was proud of the impact Orchid Thai had on the community and wished for more Asian American businesses in downtown Detroit." - Serena Maria Daniels

My wife and I were in the area, so we decided to stop by for dinner since it was close. It was nice and quaint inside, but it took a few minutes to be greeted. Once we were, we immediately got seated and were given water and asked if there was anything else we wanted to drink besides water. I said hot tea and the waitress confirmed and left to get the tea..... presumably. We never got it, but didn't say anything. After that it took quite a while for our order to be taken. Having said all that, this place more than made up for it when I tried the Hot & Sour soup that was brought out with tempura chips. The soup was amazing! Definitely the best Hot & Sour soup I've ever had. It was on the spicy side, which I loved, but a bit too spicy for my wife. When our orders were finally taken, my wife ordered Drunken Noodles (mild) and I ordered Ped (Hot). My dish (Ped - hot) was fantastic....at least equal to the best I've had. The spice level was perfect...just hot, not ridiculously scorching. My wife loved her dish (Drunken Noodles). I tried a little and it was very good, although perhaps not the best I've ever had, but maybe close. We had enough to take home for leftovers (yay!). If they could tighten up the service a bit it would be five stars across the board. The staff was friendly and polite.

One of the best tai food spots around the area . I have been there multiple times , consistently good food . Nice menu selection and I recommend their lunch combos .

Google
A new favorite lunch spot! Impeccable service from smiling waitstaff, extra water carafe at the table and complimentary (delicious) hot n sour soup with puffy chips to enjoy as I digest the menu. The standard Pad Thai was well seasoned, everything right and nothing at all wrong. Hot, fresh, nearly instantaneous lunch. Now I know where to go when I want a restful meal on my time frame. Superb!

I did not know that Thai food ( or, in this case, Anglo-attempts at Thai) could be bland. When people speak of Thai food, you typically hear that Thai food has complex flavor profiles with a harmonious blend of sweet, sour, somewhat salty, and spicy flavors. This restaurant changed hands during COVID. What they served today is nothing like what Orchid Cafe served from the early 1990s until 2020 when I dined there weekly. My curry dish lacked any aromatics or fresh herbs and seasonings. The curry sauce was best described as "bland with heat." It reminded me too much like when a Chinese restaurant tries to serve Thai dishes. The lunch portion was also small for the price. The restaurant was clean, and the service was fast (although the server missed a custom ask for my dish). It was the food that was lacking. Heck, even the shrimp chips were stale. The sweet and sour soup was watery. Too bad. A Great place messed up under new ownership.

My family and I had such a delightful dinner at Orchid Cafe last Friday evening. Their in-dining service was impeccable and their dishes so delectable. I would highly recommend the Hot & Sour Soup (best around Metro Detroit hands down), Crab Rangoons (half eaten in the photo - 6 total) and the Royal Chicken (the yummiest sweet sauce). I would drive a half hour to get my favorite Thai food from here. It’s a very cute & clean spot. Looking forward to visiting again soon! Google
Best Thai food in Troy All that we had was delicious: spring rolls, summer rolls chicken and shrimp, garlic broccoli beef and Gang gai chicken. Very tasty, fast for pick up and plenty of food for lunch portions!

Google
Very clean inside. people are friendly and attentive. What I ordered was good. Chicken was good and it was a good amount. I saved half for next day. Also they offer cash discount. I highly recommend this place for those who want to try Thai food. It might be too salty for some dishes for some people.

Google
This place underwent an ownership change and I’m here for it! Just visited for a girls’ night dinner and the food was fantastic!! The service was great as well! Everything was fresh and hot and very flavorful! You can tell it was made fresh! I think a lot of Thai places have been decreasing in quality but this place brought it back! Pay them a visit!

Yelp
Such great service and delicious food! Huge portions, I had enough for three separate meals.

Rylee L.

Yelp
Orchid Cafe has great costumer service . I love the set us it feels very welcoming! Every time I order it's always 5 stars I have never had a bad food order. This restaurant never messes up my orders and over all my favorite restaurant ever!!!!!

Nancy S.

Yelp
This place was my favorite Thai in Michigan, it was 'almost' authentic. They just delivered food in a melted styrofoam container! Melted plastic foam in my food!!! Not only should they be CLOSED FOR BUSINESS, but they should be fined and jailed! Shut that place down!!

Ashley G.

Yelp
Love this place!!!! Everything you order is delicious even the drinks. I found this place Doordashing in the Troy area!! Had to get an iced tea when I seen it was ORANGE, plus I'm going thru a chai tea phase right now and I wish I could make this!!!

Pla C.

Yelp
This family is crushing it here. My friend told me the story behind the restaurant/ new owners and I'm impressed. So friendly here. This place was busy for lunch. They give you complimentary shrimp chips and Thai hot & sour soup. Delicious. The chicken in both plates....so tender. Next time I would get mild+, no spice but sooo good. I will be back to check out the Pad Thai & shrimp dishes.

Samantha G.

Yelp
I dined in for the first time and was not disappointed. Delicious food as always and prompt service!

Nancy J.

Yelp
They really go out of their way to accommodate gluten free. The food is very good and they are generous with their portions. I am so happy they got new style containers; no more styrofoam!

Nevein M.

Yelp
I just went to this restaurant after more than a year they have a new owner. The food is good and it is clean. The waitress which is I believe the owner when she took the plates when we were done made a comment that since I did not finish all my white rice next time we should ask for less . I really did not like that comment at all whether we finish all the rice or not she should not had made that comment we also asked for extra napkins which she ignored and some chilly sauce that we asked for had scraps at the bottom on the bowl. That is why I gave them three stars . Please improve your table side manners.

Kris P.

Yelp
Their hot and sour soup is different from almost any other hot and sour soup I've come across before. It's lighter in color and less vinegary and is spiced perfectly (not just heat-wise but the flavor is slightly different from others). It tastes so good. It's my favorite and has been since I used to go to their other location on Rochester road (which I think isn't there any more) many years ago. I drive out of my way just for the hot and sour soup. It's so good to me that I've never tried their Tom yum soup so I can't review that. Their other dishes are very flavorful and delicious. Their prices are reasonable as well. There is only one other Thai restaurant in metro Detroit that has food which I would rate higher but only by just a tiny tiny bit. Orchid Cafe still gets 5 stars from me. Orchid Cafe is one of the best Thai restaurants in metro Detroit and I've never had a bad experience here.

Sue S.

Yelp
Food was okay except the scallops in the seafood curry were borderline rotten. It hurt to not eat them because I love scallops and it was a birthday treat. But service was good and the complimentary coconut ice cream was appreciated.

Janice Y.

Yelp
Gluten & Dairy Sensitive Foodies - Yes you can eat Thai!! This place has always been my favorite Thai place for years because they never skimped on portion and they would make dairy-free curry sauce for me. Now, the new owners have made it even better by using gluten-free soy sauce so I can eat the brown sauce entrees too. Did I mention the delicious homemade coconut ice cream?

Nicole E.

Yelp
Dine-in is closed still. Guess I should have asked when I called about their hours. I had assumed the dine-in would be open by now:( Ordered a curry (C9) with chicken and steamed tofu, medium spicy and a curry noodle with chicken and steamed tofu and veggies too, sides only, not full portions off the adds and a bag of shrimp cracker. Free sanitizer for guests. $33.39. The bag of shrimp crackers are big. I don't know how much it costs since I never received an itemized bill at all for any part of my meal. The shrimp crackers are yummy, crunchy and addicting too. The curry noodles spilled out of the styrofoam container into the bag and it was placed between my feet on the floor to keep to from moving during the drive. The curry noodles are hot plus and decent, the noodles are thicker than we are used to. The add-on portions aren't bad. The curry C9 is okay. Curry sauce was okay. Meat is a bit fatty on a few pieces.

Yelp
Very authentic and the most delicious Thai food in Troy. The family that owns this business is so nice and friendly! The restaurant is always clean too. I love to support their business especially during Covid times. They have the absolute best pad Thai!! I've tried pad Thai at many other restaurants in the metro Detroit and have found nothing that compares to this! I highly recommend trying it if you haven't. I always get "no spice" when they ask for the level of spice when ordering but ask to have the spice on the side so I can control the spiciness of the dish. The vegetables are always fresh and the noodles are never over cooked or undercooked...always perfect. Their TomYum soup, spring rolls and shrimp chips are delicious as well for appetizers. I can't wait till this place opens again for in dining. Before Covid it was always busy during lunchtime but you're in an out within an hour. They currently are closed for lunch hours and are only open for carry out. 3 PM to 8 PM Monday through Thursday 3 PM to 9 PM Friday 5 PM to 9 PM Saturday closed on Sundays. I highly recommend this place for your next Thai craving. You will never want to go to another Thai place again after eating here!

Rachel W.

Yelp
I would explain this place as the ultimate Thai comfort food. My family and friends have been eating here for years. Originally we found it when it was on Rochester Rd. After covid, that location took over this location and brought many of that staff. The food is top notch. Garlic chicken & rice is brothy and exactly what you need on a cold day. Orange chicken is so much better than anywhere else I've been. My granddaughter who is incredibly picky enjoys their chicken fingers or chicken fried rice. So there is stuff for even your picky eaters who won't try anyone. The people that run the place are so nice. And it is clean. I cannot recommend this place enough. It's one of my favorites.

Liz P.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I got takeout from here today, because there is a BOGO lunch/dinner coupon in the Entertainment book app. I have been to Orchid Cafe before in Troy, but the Rochester Rd. location, which apparently no longer has any affiliation with this location. This one is located at the corner of Square Lake Rd and Livernois. Starting with the bad and moving on to the good ... the Thai iced tea was inedible. My boyfriend and I usually get that from Sy Thai, and I've also had it from Bangkok Cuisine (Royal Oak) and other places. This tasted very different. When we got back to my house, we opened up the lids and there was something floating around in it ... I'm guessing they use a mix. The fact that my (non-picky) boyfriend and I BOTH disliked it was pretty bad ... $6 literally down the drain. For the entrees: I got the cashew beef and he got the Siam Duck. Both were decent, although I like Sy Thai's better. The best part of the meal was actually the "Summer Rolls" (appetizer A9). I've had these before although they've been called something else, and usually it comes with either a thin peanut sauce or a sweet chili sauce; Orchid Thai's comes with a THICK peanut sauce, and it was delicious. Overall I'd give this place 3/5 stars, but wouldn't rush to return, based on this experience. If you live in the area, it's worth trying out, I just would definitely skip the Thai iced tea.

Nel P.

Yelp
Everything is always great; food, service, and ambiance. Ever since the Troy Cafe closed down we were elated we found this one again, same delicious food and staff that is always welcoming. Will always make trips especially for this place.

Mary D.

Yelp
The food and service were amazing. The hot and sour soup is the best I have ever had. Would also highly recommend the spring rolls and Pad Ped.

Sherita W.

Yelp
We love this place it's our go to Thai restaurant! We loved everything we get from here. They also give very large portions which is nice so you have lots to go around.

Saphace A.

Yelp
My sisters and I had to come back here. It's been so many years. We came regularly with our parents when we were kids. Same space, same family who runs it. It's always a good handful of people in here, never super busy. A lot of people like to get carry out here. We dined in a little close to 7:30 on a Friday evening. They immediately seated us and brought waters. They brought out the fried shrimp chips and the bamboo soup which I think helps to cleanse your system. I felt a bit full from the soup even though it was small. Perhaps it was just one huge ladle full. We ordered pad Thai, param rongsong (a mixture of broccoli, carrots, baby corn, and a nice peanut sauce), and the royal chicken (crispy chicken mixed with a sauce with carrots and peppers). Good as always! We shared our dishes but barely made a dent! Perhaps we should've ordered two dishes between all 3 of us. I love all the orchids they set around the room and all the Thai decorations. So pretty! They've got a nice chandelier in the middle of the space which is right above a small aquarium. It was cute! They placed some pretty calming music. Hillsong, Lauren Daigle, Aaron Shust. Yay! Service was good. Food came fast and they were attentive to when we finished dishes and when we needed more water, even though she set the pitcher on our table. She poured more for us anyway! They were very nice! Made good eye contact. Even bid us goodbye at the door! Can't wait to relive my childhood again next time!

Yelp
Dine in or take out is good. Service tends to run slow but staff is very friendly. I have ordered several items and liked them all.

Cory C.

Yelp
I've been continuing my exploration of Troy restaurants with my coworkers and this one did not disappoint! This place has the best lard na (wide rice noodles with broccoli, choice of meat, and brown gravy) I've had in Michigan so far. The noodles are fresh, and the wok sear left the noodles fragrant, as opposed to a lot of other places that just use dry noodles. It really makes all the difference in the world. This place was generous with the broccoli and beef, unlike Sy Thai, where their toppings are sparse. The beef was fresh and they didn't use that tenderizer powder that makes meat unnaturally soft. The gravy was a little thin/soupy, but the flavor was spot on. It was enough to flavor the noodles, broccoli, and beef without being too salty. I tried some of my friend's chicken pad Thai which was also excellent. The noodles had a rich, sweet flavor and the chicken breast had a nice crust on the outside from the wok while retaining its moisture inside. We also got shrimp chips with our meal in the beginning. The chips were crispy, not too greasy, and fried in fresh oil. I know they're just chips, but these were probably the best shrimp chips I've had. The soup that came with our meals was also good, even though it was a little spicy for my taste. Service was decent - the waitress came to refill our waters and they were pretty prompt with everything. The atmosphere is bright, open, and clean. I have a few other Troy Thai restaurants bookmarked on Yelp that I still need to try. This place set the bar really high - I'd be surprised if any of the others came close.

Paul A.

Yelp
Always have great food and good service. Had the Pad Thai and crab rangoon last night and enjoyed them both.

Udeshi A.

Yelp
I got food poisoning after eating here this week. Still recovering. Food actually tasted fine but of course I can't leave a good review here because I got sick a few hours after.

Emma G.

Yelp
Great people & food! We shared Pad Thai & Prik +broccoli. Complimentary hot & sour soup. Delicious, already can't wait to return!

Yelp
It's been over 16 years since I've been able to eat here. We use to come here and their other location 2-3 times a week for lunch when I worked in Troy. Now, living in New Mexico - I can only dream about the great Thai restaurants that Detroit has...this being one of my old personal favorites. We have (1) great Thai place in Albuquerque and thank god. That said, I ordered two of my old favorites here last night and yes, I ate 2/3rds of each one. I'm still stuffed 15 hours later. And, it was as good as I remember too. You just done find dark Pad Se Ewe like this anywhere in the southwest - from Texas to Orange County - trust me. It's just not that good...unless...unless you know it's made From Laotian or Hmong - the. You'll know it's GREAT Thai!! Orchid Cafe is a Laotian family and trust me they don't shy away from spice or heat or most importantly - flavor. Enjoy Troy!! Lucky bastards!!!

Mike M.

Yelp
So fresh! The best Thai food I have ever had. The flavors are amazing. The owners truly care about the food they make here. We happily drive one hour round-trip to eat here, it is that good! Once you have the Thai food here you will have no need to eat Thai food anywhere else in the area. This is excellent quality food at a reasonable price!

Alexandra T.

Yelp
Couldn't have been more impressed with this restaurant! The food was amazing to say the least. We ordered shrimp & scallops curry, hot & sour soup, and pad thai vegetables. The flavor of all of the dishes was outstanding. They have a large selection of vegetarian options which was great as well! This was the first time we ordered from this restaurant and will definitely be repeat customers. This was the best thai food we have ever had! Highly recommend!!

Nancy M.

Yelp
Best Thai in the area. Food is always hot and fresh. Owners are very friendly. Their hot and sour soup is the best I've ever had.

Matt E.

Yelp
Everything on the menu is good. And the daily specials are all great! Service is very friendly and efficient. I go for lunch at least once a week.

Michael N.

Yelp
Chicken Pad Thai is excellent!! Premium chicken and they can make it sweet or spicy!!

Anthony G A.

Yelp
Amazing food that tastes out of this world, been going here for a long while and nothing matches this place, it has great staff and great service, and an amazing design and amazing ambiance, this place is just straight up comfort food.

Bob B.

Yelp
Ordered the Pad Thai, it was very good. I would order it again. During the ongoing pandemic they did curb side pick up very efficiently. Thank you for continuing to serve during this time.

Cassandra E.

Yelp
Huge disappointment! I ordered larb and green curry, the protein for both was chicken. The portion size for the larb was impressive however I did not taste the traditional spices/ flavors I am use to (mint, basil, lime juice). The green curry sauce had the consistency of water the vegetables were over cooked and the dish had very little chicken. The staff was friendly and the place looked clean but I was looking for a good meal. I will not return.

Tara S.

Yelp
Our favorite Thai restaurant. Have been coming here for years and have never been disappointed. Pad Thai and fried rice are our two favorites. Can't forget the Apple Salad! Absolutely delish! Gets your tastebuds dancing.

Lorraine P.

Yelp
Stopped in here for some take-out yesterday. Ordering was easy, location was convenient. Fresh rolls and cashew chicken were absolutely delicious and the portions were very generous. Lots of chicken, We would absolutely order these two items again. In addition, we had the fried calamari as an appetizer. Delicious! Next time we will order two! It was that good and we found ourselves wanting more. The last item we had was the Tom yum soup with shrimp. Personally, I like Tom yum when it is not so sweet. The broth, for me, was just a little too sweet for my taste. The shrimp, inside the soup, was tasty; one complain...there were only 4 pieces of shrimp in a whole quart. If you desire more shrimp, you might want to ask them to double up. In my opinion, there should be a minimum of 6 pieces. Other than that, the food was great and service was excellent. We'll go there again, for sure.

Catherine D.

Yelp
I never received the food. Grub Hub has delivered, on 3 separate occasions, my food to a mystery address. Orchid Cafe typically has great food though!

Butthalibut B.

Yelp
By far the Best Thai good around! We drive nearly sn hour to go here! They have so many unique dishes you just can't find anywhere else. Nothing compares. The Royal Fish is a MUST try! They even have infected thr basics like Pad Thai, etc. Tge good is definitely worth thd drive! Wish gadca picture of thd meal to post, but it didn't last long enough!!!! We probably drive past 30-60 Thai restaurants yo get here! We havectrued everything else while they were temporarily closed, snd nothing even came close. Large portions at a reasonable price along with all the sides! By far, one of our favorite restaurants in Metro Detroit! Many of the customers drive hours to get here!

Gina V.

Yelp
We eat here everyday. Ladies at Janelle's Salon across the street. The Thai is the best!! Never disappointed. Fresh food, lovely waitresses, great service. The cooks always allow even the pickiest of our requests processed to satifaction. We LOVE Orchid!!! Mention Orchid Thai when you book a service at Janelle's Salon 248-879-1620. We will give you a discount. Gina

Beth B.

Yelp
I am completely addicted to this place. I started a new job a few months back and a new coworker recommended this place. I come here at least once a week and I haven't had a dish that is anything less than awesome. My favorites are the hot &a sour soup, fresh rolls with chicken, Pad Thai, drunken noodles, fried rice, chicken curry and the apple salad. The staff here is very friendly and on their game. Don't worry about getting back to work on time, they seat you quickly, take your order when you're ready and get your food out very fast. They'll even let you know if your dish is going to take a little longer. Take out is also a breeze here as well. Thanks Orchid, keep up the good work!

Derp M.

Yelp
100%. Really good food. I got a lunch combo that was 2 different dishes and a soup for $9! Can't beat it. Plus I got to try a great new dish I would have never known to order. I'll definitely be back here. Want to try the Tom is gai soup next which I'm usually a fan of.

John B.

Yelp
The best place for Thai food in Metro Detroit. Period.

Lisa G.

Yelp
Doesn't look like I'm getting dinner tonight. No delivery. Not sure why. No reason given when I called. I do get a credit for no delivery. Wah-Wah. Guess it's cereal for dinner.

Mark G.

Yelp
Bland. I don't get it. How can a cook or chef taste this "brown sauce" and think it tastes good? I ordered the seafood combo which is supposed to have brown sauce not watery tan sauce. The combo is supposed to come with scallops, squid and crab meat. There were no scallops and the crab was krab. You know, the formed fish with a painted red stripe that tastes nothing like crab. The squid was rubber. The shrimp was over-cooked also, not as badly as the squid but a little dry and chewy. Also seemed like they were trying to rid themselves of bamboo shoots. There were a ton of them. Too many. There are far better Thai restaurants in the area. Try Bangkok Cuisine.

Ildy S.

Yelp
First time visitor but very impressed. Big portions, excellent food and service!! All of my friends enjoyed their dish also! Will definitely be returning.

Ediza F.

Yelp
Meh. I personally don't like this place. It's fine. To me it's flavorless. I guess I need to have lots of flavor and my tastebuds are spoiled. But I'm not too keen on the food. We had the pad Thai, great portions but I'm not partial to this dish. We also had the soup Tom Gha Kai (or however it's spelled). It also was flavorless. Oh man 2 for 2! They asked me how spicy I wanted it. I told them I wanted it spicy, didn't come out that way. I told them about it, they shrugged it off. So meh. Not my favorite place, but whatever. It's ok! On to the next restaurant!

K J.

Yelp
Second time I'm ordering curbside from here and I'll probably make it a weekly thing. Ordered two chicken dishes and two vegetarian dishes. The food was wonderfully flavored and fresh. Quantity was just right and the girl taking the order really went above and beyond to make sure she double checked that my vegetarian items didn't have fish sauce or oyster sauce (and even put up with me being late in my pickup). Definitely a keeper! (and yes, they were wearing masks). My only feedback would be to make it a bit more spicy but thats a personal thing, it was great the way it was.

Caleb P.

Yelp
This place is great! Very friendly staff. Food is delicious. If you're not sure what to get, try the daily specials and you'll get to try two different dishes. One of the best Chicken Pad Thai's I've ever had. Some of my other go-to's are the Coconut Shrimp with Fried Rice, Pepper Garlic Beef, Bangkok Chicken, Royal Chicken, and Cashew Chicken.

Tiffany M.

Yelp
I have had my fair share of AUTHENTIC Thai food. Including White Star. Sala Thai etc. I walked in was greeted by the waitress right away. There wasn't that "Sense if do I seat myself or waiting feeling."....I was dining alone So the I'm new and lost feeling wasn't there. As with any Thai food restaurant I was greeted to the table with a fresh basket of shrimp chips. They are this airy puffy amazing crunchy Cheeto texture chips. I always order Thai Tea when I dine out Thai. And they usually over sweeten NY tea... Not here. Perfectly proportioned not to sweet iced Thai tea. Wow! The portions are HUGE. I MEAN HUGE! my....which I recommendations include the curry dishes... The #C9 my favorite... Curry chicken with a nice coconut milk broth with mini corn and broccoli.. Pea pods....AMAZING. I like my curry hot. So I ordered a med. Flavor because curry can be HOT. AND AMAZING like I thought. Out of all my recommendations... A+ five Star and 100% authentic AMAZING food.
