Yelp
Original Joe's has officially landed in Walnut Creek, and it brings with it all the old-school charm, generous portions, and timeless Italian-American flavor that made its San Francisco location a legend.
Ambiance:
The space beautifully blends classic and modern -- dark wood, cozy booths, white tablecloths, and a long bar that makes you feel like you've stepped into a 1950s supper club. The framed caricatures and nostalgic artwork (including a standout piece featuring Bruno, the Original Joe's co-founder) give the space personality and history. Even during peak hours, the energy feels warm and welcoming, not chaotic.
Service:
Despite a packed house, the staff was attentive, friendly, and kept things moving. There was a hiccup with my order -- I originally received the Meat Lasagna instead of the Eggplant Parmigiana -- but the server quickly acknowledged the mistake, apologized, and had the correct dish remade with a 15-minute wait. I appreciated the professionalism and follow-through.
Food:
* Fried Calamari (7/10): A bit salty for my taste, but still crispy and satisfying.
* Meat Lasagna (9/10): I only had a couple of bites while trying to identify if it was Eggplant Parmigiana (it wasn't), but it was rich, flavorful, and clearly made with care.
* 16 oz. Ribeye with Ravioli (10/10): Shared while waiting for my corrected order -- perfectly seasoned, juicy, and paired well with Joe's signature meat sauce on the side ravioli. A highlight of the meal.
* Eggplant Parmigiana (7/10): This was my intended order. It didn't wow me, possibly because my appetite had dipped by the time it arrived. I'd be open to trying it again on a fresh visit.
* Butter Cake (8/10): A touch too sweet for my taste, but still delicious and a nice way to end the meal.
Final Thoughts:
Original Joe's in Walnut Creek delivers a nostalgic dining experience with solid food and classic vibes. While my visit had a few minor bumps, the quality of the dishes and the overall atmosphere made up for it. It's the kind of place where you come hungry, stay a while, and leave full -- not just from the food, but from the experience.
Would I go back? Absolutely -- and next time, I'll make room for that lasagna
