The Best Restaurants in Chinatown Chicago | Eater Chicago

"Not to be confused with the Triple Crown on Wentworth Avenue, this late-night favorite on 22nd Place is a go-to for Cantonese fare and fresh seafood. The “hundred flavored” beef, chicken, and shrimp are signature dishes, and the family-style dinners can feed anywhere from three to 10 people." - Jeffy Mai

Google
Went to this place for some late night food and it is really great they open until so late and have smaller potions for late night. Most of the dishes we order were okay but not amazing. But the duck tongue was really not good, it was really not fresh with a very strong gamey taste. Maybe I should order safer menu items.

I want to first start off by saying don’t come to this place with your family and/or friends if you’re Black. I came in with a party of 7-8 people. We called this establishment beforehand to let them know our party size in consideration for them being family owned. Once we were finally seated it was at a table that had gnats/mosquitoes raining from the ceiling no joke. They were everywhere on us and the table. It took them over 30 minutes to finally come take our order. Mind you we never even got the chance to order food because we asked if it was possible to move tables. We were told that our table was “okay” and that we don’t need move even though we explained that it’s a literally a cloud of gnats that was in our and the server’s face. In addition to the fact that there were a few tables that had just became available. After the server kept trying to convince us that our table was okay. She finally let us move to a different table and then they never came back to serve us. While they continued to serve people who had came in after us. So we got up and left. We were polite, patient, and continued to give grace. So I don’t understand why we were given such bad service along with it being unsanitary. Bias needs to be left at the door when people are looking to support and eat at your restaurant point blank.

Google
Came here with my family for dinner. Food and pricing are both reasonable. Taste was pretty good, some dishes were a little bit salty. But would recommend.

Google
A hole-in-wall, or rather hole in a small street restaurant that gives large portions to eat and take home. Very informal dining, casual dining spot with classic Chinese food. Nothing great to look at but who is looking when the food is FANTASTIC. The fish was so soft like butter. The porkchop was sweet (maybe too much, but perfect for kids). Beef and veggies were tasty. Lobster was nothing special but for the price, not bad! Go to spot to always bring large groups of family, or to show up at 2AM drunk to eat with friends!

Google
My family love to dine in this original triple crown since 1994. They open til 2 am but 11 pm on Sunday. I like to eat authentic Chinese at late night. Most business owners come here after they close their stores or restaurant. Foods are fresh, hot and delicious. We order stir fry garlic pea pod, fry shrimp, crispy quail, beef with bitter melon, come with white rice and soup. Service is good too. I recommend you to come here and enjoy.

Google
Pretty standard Chinese food. Haven't been here for years and it hasn't changed much. Friendly service and the food comes out pretty quick. The prices are very reasonable for the portion of food. The restaurant is on the second floor of the building. Interior is standard for a Chinese restaurant. We decided to get the set dinner meal for like 10 people. It comes with a good mix of food to satisfy everyone's craving. The food was pretty standard and not too greasy. The family set menu also comes with some soup before the meal and red bean soup for dessert. Both are pretty standard for a Chinese dinner.

Google
I think the price of their food consider reasonable compare to other restaurant. Their food consider come with big portion compare with other restaurant. The food is a good but some are salty. Their service is good too.

Yelp
This is the perfect restaurant for a huge group of people, as their round tables can fit up to parties of 8-12! This is your very very traditional Chinese restaurant, no frills with huge portion sizes! They give you so much complimentary food: a big bowl of white rice, a big bowl of comforting soup, and a red bean soup dessert (one of the best I've had in a while - not watered down at all). The prices were so affordable too, though a bit more expensive than what they list on the menu. The standout dish was the braised green pea sprouts in broth with century egg (上湯豆苗)!!
google avatar

Yelp
For the price this spot is pretty unbeatable. we usually get the dinner for 6 or 8 which is around $100-120 for like 6-7 dishes including Cantonese style lobster. The service is honestly that of a typical Chinese restaurant so don't really expect to have really attentive service. The ambiance is great for dinners with family. We usually go with like 4-6 people and order lots to have leftovers for the next few days.

Yelp
We've been coming here for over 25 years. It's always a great place for a big group of people.

Yelp
07/07/23 - I was originally at Seven Treasures Cantonese Restaurant on Wentworth. After waiting for 42 mins for my order to come I finally got up & walked out. I walked down the street to 22nd Place & stopped in @ THE ORIGINAL TRIPLE CROWN RESTAURANT @ 211 W 22nd Place. I went upstairs and ordered & 5 minutes later my salt & pepper smelt w/jalapeños was on my table w/a bowl of white rice & hot chili oil. That's the was to do it 5 minutes not 42 minutes Very good food & service. They are also opened late nights & serve 1/2 sized servings & full sized servings. My wife works the second shift once in a while. We have stopped by and ordered 3 - 1/2 sized servings to share family style.

Yelp
Located just off the main street of wentworth in China town. Minimal street parking i recommend a lot then walking around and exploring the cafes shops after you eat. Authentic flavors and a large menu with various dishes and dim-sum. There is family style menu as well as a la carte. Great lunch and late night menu, staff is friendly and prompt bring tea ams water immediately then making menu recommendations. Beef chow fun was good portion with alot of beef all very clean cuts. To compliment with I tried the beef dumplings all pan seared perfectly. Overall great value and portions and good service.

Yelp
Food was delicious. Our waitress had lots of patience helping with our order. We came around 10pm. Most of the tables were empty but full of dirty dishes. We waited too long for a table.

G W.

Yelp
This place was surprisingly good. We just got takeout. The portion sizes are the standard black plastic takeout containers, but they are packed to the brim. However, the prices are really good compared to all the other Chinatown restaurants who jacked up their prices by 50% since the pandemic. And not only are the prices good, the food is very good as well. We had the shrimp lobster sauce, seafood tofu casserole, beef broccoli, chicken peapods, egg rolls, and BBQ pork. Everything was really tasty. This may be my new go-to.

Yelp
One thing about Chinese restaurant service is that they all lack great customer service, however you know the food is bussin when you eat there. It was hot as hell outside, but inside felt like a freezer. No matter where we moved, i was bout to turn into an ice cube shortly. We ordered 6-7 entrees, congee, noodles, different proteins & veggies. Things took forever to come out but you already know that's just how the service be sometimes. Overall, the food was good. One of the dishes was spiced to perfection, the one with visible onions/ I don't know what any of these dishes are called. But if you think this is what you want, just show them the pictures. They'll know! Ambiance ain't just a little loud, but business was poppin inside. I liked the congee, super refreshing per usual. We ordered two noodles, one looked pan fried, other stir fried. Stir fried just tasted like vermicelli noodles while pan fried noodles was crunchy and had a sauce. Would suggest if you're hungry at night & looking for something healthy to eat instead of fast food. Prices were fair and the works there did their best with the people they had. 4/5

Yelp
We stayed at the Airbnb across the street and found this late night gem easily. It was a fun experience. Loved the big tables with the lazy Susan. The food was all delicious. Be sure to try the crab ragoon. The staff was a bit slow but they were very friendly. Overall I just liked the option of eating yummy Chinese after a full day of Chicago activities.

Yelp
We've been going here for years This is still a hidden gem for some delicious, affordable Chinese dishes you can have quality Cantonese food that they serve. It's located on the second floor not to be confused with the other one with the same name on Wentworth which is not the ORIGINAL one. Service was on point with Ken, and it's a BYOB, with no corkage fee since we always bring a couple of wines to pair with our delicious food. Ambiance is your typical Chinese restaurant, bright and spacious, clean bathrooms. Overall we keep coming back, and not too many know about this place which is nice and a hidden find for our family'.

Yelp
Food was really good. I was in Chicago for a few days and went here twice. Service was a little slower than I'd like and don't look around if you are one to look for fine details. Not the cleanest. In that case grab takeout
google avatar

Maricel J.

Yelp
My colleague and I ordered lunch from here today. They have quite an extensive menu, but they're lunch menu does not include steamed rice. We ordered entrees instead since they come with steamed rice. My colleague ordered the General Tao's Chicken and I had the Hundred Flavored Beef. We tried each other's entree because it simply looked delicious, and it did not disappoint. Both entrees were spicy. My dish was slightly more spicy, but it wasn't overwhelming. The spice was just. Despite not ordering from the lunch menu, we ag least have some leftovers for dinner We will definitely order from here again.

Yelp
Wow, if you're looking for a true China town experience, please visit Triple Crown. I hadn't been to China town since I was a child, and the food at Triple Crown fulfilled everything I was looking for. I could have eaten 3 orders of the string beans they were that good.

Karen J.

Yelp
Imagine walking up to a business and seeing this super inappropriate sign on their door. It reads in spanish: "For those who don't have any fucking idea of english. Learn to read instructions to avoid losing your job." WTF
google avatar

Dana C.

Yelp
I've ordered twice from this restaurant over a 10 day period. While to sauces were tasty the pork fried rice and the chicken moo shu had so little pork or chicken that I truly had to dig for them. I was disappointed. Dana Corman

Yelp
My go to for good tasting Chinese food, that's also large portions and cheap! We like their mandarin pork chops and salt and pepper squid
google avatar

Crannie A.

Yelp
Delicious fresh and tasty food. It's on a side street so easy to miss it while driving. We came in around 630pm and we were able to distance from the other tables. It's Covid times but hey, sometimes we need to get out ! We ordered Hot and sour soup and vegetable soup and four dishes to share for $65. Worth it because the portions were large enough that we were able to have lunch the next day.
google avatar

Jill G.

Yelp
Greatest Chinese food ever tasted! Since Dad got diagnosed with cancer last year, he couldn't eat much for months, but when brought here, his appetite was back! Each dish was perfect to our liking. My parents go here all the time now - an hour away drive but all worth it!

Denise N.

Yelp
The food was all fresh and made to order. It is the best Chinese food I've ever had. I will be back for sure and make the drive again. If you're in a hurry this is not your place so if you go allow enough time to sit a relax.

Yelp
Salt & Pepper Duck Tongue $20 - I have never tried this dish anywhere before and it was gross! The tongue were hard and boney and not edible. Hard pass. Fried chicken wings with honey (6) $6 - Good flavor, wet wings. Salt & Pepper Squid $13 - Can't go wrong with this dish, always a favorite. Kung Pao Chicken $9 - Love the pea pods and baby corn in this dish. Good flavor with generic chicken. Pork Fried Rice Noodles $10 - Large portion and tasty. ....| \ _ , , , - - , , _ , .../ , ` . - ' ` ' . _ \ - ; ; ; , _ ..| , a - ) ) _ . ; . Yelp
It's off of Wentworth; there's a door in an old industrial-type building that you have to walk through and climb to the second floor to get there, but don't let the old metal stairs discourage you! It's a wonderful, almost elegant Chinese restaurant complete with large round tables with tablecloths that look much fancier than the paper they actually are (I had to look carefully--they're that nice!) There's a full Chinese menu, and multiple big screens playing with Asian programming--one had to be 135 inches! Best of all for us--my husband works until 10:30pm at O'Hare, so most places are closed by the time he gets back here, but this place was open until 1am! Great food; owner (manager?) was super-nice. I'm sure it's great anytime, but for us, it's our new super-late niche!!!

Yelp
This review is long overdue. I've been coming to the Original Triple Crown ever since I've been a little girl. It's my favorite restaurant in Chinatown. What makes this place stand out from all the rest of the Chinese restaurants is that they flavor their food so well. I love their Salt N Pepper Squid and their Shrimp (with shell on!). Their fried rice is not too greasy, and they have several food options. We always come with at least 6-8 people so their Dinner For 6 or 8 is a great bang for the buck. There are several dishes that it comes with and they also are willing to substitute dishes for others if you ask. Their plates are very generous in size so a family style dinner is always the best way to go. Last night we ordered the Dinner for 6 but its really like a dinner for 8 or 9. The brocolli in the Beef n Brocolli dish was really fresh, and i love that its Chinese brocolli that they put in there instead of the normal brocolli. Their steamed fish with cilantro is a great healthy option, but still tasty. There is always something for everyone here as their menu is extensive. Dont let the entrance fool you. It's located on a little street called Wentworth, and you would barely know it's there, except for the sign located above your head. Step inside, go up the stairs, and discover some yummy goodness!

Yelp
My family just loves this place and it's been around forever. Some of their dishes are way too authentic if you know why I'm saying but they also have the usual Cantonese stuff too. Egg rolls and crab Rangoon were ok. Fried rice was good and Mongolian beef was deeeelicious and also had this Japanese tofu dish with lotsa delish veg in it--truly delish! Service was efficient and friendly. Love Brenda. I know, sooo Chinese. What did you expect, Lin Lu? hey I can say that I'm Asian. The only negative here was the bathroom. It stunk to high Heaven of urine and a total turn off!

Corey W.

Yelp
Just left this place. Very unfriendly. Barely greeted me or my party. Sat us, brought tea and never came back. Brought food and checks to other customers. Never took our drink order. Apparently not too fond of African Americans.

John H.

Yelp
Food is decent for the price, but service is pretty bad. Waitress went back to my table as they felt the tip I gave was too small. I did not revise and they decided to chase us for a bigger tip when we left the restaurant. Never coming back again.

Tiara N.

Yelp
Great place! Good service, fast service, and very reasonable pricing. One of a few Chinese restaurants that still serves shrimp toast!

Yelp
Haven't been here in a long time. Came with a group of friends after working long hours. The place hasn't changed since I was last here. A few of the same staff. The dishes served were nice portions. And it's not expensive. Affordable food at good prices and nice portions. We had ordered some good dishes but I was to tired to take pics of them all. We had bitter melon with chicken. I do not like bitter melon but thought of giving it a try. It was good. Not bitter. I could eat it again. Then we had tofu with fish fillet. It was good as it was the soft tofu not fried. And we ordered 2 noodle dishes. The first was beef and Chinese broccoli on Chow mein. The noodles were nice and crispy. Not soaked in gravy. The other noodle dish was beef chow fun. This was also good. The last dish was rice in a clay pot. It take abt 40 mins. It had chicken, Chinese sausage and fresh shiitake mushrooms. It was so good. But wish the rice cooked just a bit longer and had just a little gravy to keep it from getting to dry. And it had the crispy rice on the bottom. I would go back just for that. But it's a big pot for at least 5 people. If not plenty of leftovers. Only pic I took.

Yelp
Ordered-in for delivery twice from here. No matter what online platform you use, the restaurant apparently prefers to do their own deliveries. The first time, the driver phoned me saying he was en route but was not bringing the order all the way upstairs to my door. I instructed him to do so anyway to complete the order as paid for. He called a second time while I was showering, so I missed it. Upon arrival, he handed me the food, but after I thanked him he made some comment in broken English about "You need to answer your phone!" And "You need to listen to me." This is how he spoke to me, a customer who'd just purchased over $50 in Chinese food from him and tipped him. The second time I ordered a little over a week later, he phoned me again to say he was on his way, but this time just left the order in my lobby and refused to bring it upstairs to my door at all. Fortunately for Original Triple Crown, their food is genuinely good and worth the grief, but the man doing the deliveries (probably the owner, or manager) has a serious customer service problem and his attitude ultimately ruins the experience.
google avatar

Jazz S.

Yelp
This is not a fancy place but a really solid spot for Chinese food. It's a little bit off the main street and a fairly big place so there's often not a wait. The service was okay but they didn't really check up on us and we were one of only a couple occupied tables. It's nice they weren't trying to kick us out but it took forever to get our check. Food came out quickly though. The food was really good and very reasonably priced with big portions! My favorites were the twice-cooked szechuan pork, mushroom and japanese tofu, and stir pan fried noodles. We also got the steamed fish which was on the pricier side but really tender. They give you complimentary tea too.
google avatar

Amanda D.

Yelp
Our favorite "go to" place closed; begrudgingly, we had to find a new place. We've been to the brick & mortar location a couple of times, but enjoyed some strong cocktails so our memory wasn't the best. I think Triple Crown has made the cut. Used Yelp to order take out and was not disappointed. Fast and polite delivery, decent food (huge portions) and lots to choose from. Will for sure be ordering from here again when the craving hits!
google avatar

Lisa H.

Yelp
We tried this restaurant based on previous Yelp reviews and weren't disappointed. The restaurant is up a flight of stairs be forewarned if it's an issue. They served tea with all meals and the service was fast. The waitress was super helpful giving recommendations on what to try. We tried dim sum for the first time, there are so many choices. We loved it, a must try if you go. The portions were huge and we shared a clam based soup with fresh herbs and Mongolian beef. Dim sum is smaller portions more like an appetizer.
google avatar

Dana D.

Yelp
So many dumplings! The variety is great. Plus I like bringing my kids here. Good place to go if you have never had dim sum before.

Thanh V.

Yelp
They chased me for tips if they hadn't say i needed to tip while im paying then ill definitely leave tip cause thats so rude
google avatar

Miguel S.

Yelp
All I can say is the food is cold and bad... I'm not one to judge wether the food is good or bad. But I had to leave a one star review on this.
google avatar

Danny S.

Yelp
excellent excellent meal with Dad. Egg rolls are good. Barbecue pork is different but very good. Then we ordered the Mongolian beef and the sizzling beef and both were excellent. The sizzling beef with pepper was delicious and the Mongolian beef was quite spicy and delicious
google avatar

Adam C.

Yelp
Very good traditional Chinese food. Food is always a hot and haven't had a bad experience here yet. Kind of a hidden gem as it's off from the main plaza of Chinatown and the Main Street. Service is average but the food makes up for it. Another plus is that they are open late, so if you need a really late dinner, this is a place to go. Would recommend if you are able to find parking.

Chelsea S.

Yelp
Never again! Chicken was undercooked blood in the bone and pink and slimy around the meat. Restaurant and Chowbus refused a refund and insisted on this is how it's supposed to look. See for yourself.
google avatar

Oscar G.

Yelp
Wow, great food. Been coming here for years but I won't step foot back in this restaurant until they fix the major health hazard that is about to happen here. Months ago, I took pics of the 5 GIANT overflowing dumpsters that line the entire front of this restaurant. Trash is literally falling out of these dumpsters, coupled with the rain water that washes all the spillage onto the side of the street, waiting for their patrons to track all this crap back into the restaurant. I contacted their alderman about this, but it appears he had other business dealings with prostitutes/corruption and now is no longer the alderman. I drove by last night just to check if it was just a one time occurrence, but it seems that the issue is worse. I didn't get a pic last night, but it's a lot worse than these pics I am about to post on here. Last night, plastic bags lined the side of the street because the dumpsters couldn't hold them. It's even worse now. I can't believe anyone would eat in front of this garbage dump.

Yelp
Pretty standard Chinese food. Haven't been here for years and it hasn't changed much. Friendly service and the food comes out pretty quick. The prices are very reasonable for the portion of food. The restaurant is on the second floor of the building. Interior is standard for a Chinese restaurant. We decided to get the set dinner meal for like 10 people. It comes with a good mix of food to satisfy everyone's craving. The food was pretty standard and not too greasy. The family set menu also comes with some soup before the meal and red bean soup for dessert. Both are pretty standard for a Chinese dinner.

Yelp
Love this restaurant, the literal definition of comfort food!! Every time we feel hungry we go there, big portions, the food is freshly made and rich in flavor. The people who work there are super nice!!

Yelp
If you want modern/trendy, this place isn't for you. Original Triple Crown is an old school restaurant with delicious food. It reminds me of childhood (and I'm not from Chicago) Con: -Location is above a grocery store on a side street---It's easy to miss Pro: -Smelt was crispy and very well seasoned--no fishy taste -Mandarin pork chop was very tender, sauce could have been more savory -Pea tips taste like what my mom would make -Sesame Chicken was crispy and moist with a little spice -A sweet old man was our waiter. He was very patient with my and my friend's broken Cantonese, and responded well with our English speaker too - The space is very family oriented, and not too loud, so it's great for conversations, and has good spacing between tables -You automatically get a free pot of fragrant tea upon arrival! (I've never experienced this in a Chicago Chinese restaurant). It wasn't watered down or steeped too long. I think this will become my go-to Chinese restaurant for dine in!
google avatar

Eric T.

Yelp
Do not order. Food was gross. Sesame Chicken was a gelatinous clump with hardly any chicken in it, not at all crispy. Truly gross. Shrimp fried rice had no flavor. Crab Rangoon were barely stuffed and some had no crab mix at all. Will never order from here again. Threw it out, couldn't even eat it. Yuck.

Yelp
Went here pretty late on a Sunday night. The restaurant was busy but not packed. We got seated when we walked in and got handed the menus. After looking through the menu and deciding on what we wanted, we looked around and waited for at least 15 minutes before we were able to get someone's attention to come over to get our order. That is a long time to wait for a restaurant that was not super busy.....especially at 11 pm. On the menu, there was a lot of items for a late night menu which was awesome because we got to order some dishes not worrying that we wouldn't be able to finish or spend more than we should. Overall the food was good, but I feel the service should be a little bit better. Especially when it came to water refills. Waiting for a while and then to flag down someone for a water refill because they are not paying attention, even after coming by the table shouldn't be acceptable.

Yelp
I dined in at this location. All servers wore masks, we were initially the only people inside around 3pm. Another party arrived about 30 minutes later, and were seated on the other side of the banquet style restaurant, located above a little grocery store. There is a restroom straight back from the entrance with very nice hand soap as well. For our meal, we sampled some of the more familiar options from Triple Crown's enormous, but well organized menu. For those there during lunch or late night hours there are two full pages to choose from as well at reduced prices. The vegetable fried rice (with no egg a plant based option) combined with Szechuan green beans was absolutely delicious. Egg rolls were some of the best around too.
google avatar

Linda N.

Yelp
Late night specials are good deals after 9 pm but the food is okay . Nothing special . Just basic Chinese food . I come here when I know I have a big group and I don't want to wait long to be seated . Egg drop soup is no good . Everything else is decent . But I do like the lobster Hong Kong style the most . For a very cheap price .
google avatar

Gene L.

Yelp
Since it is Covid times, got the dinner for 6 for takeout . $78 plus an additional $3 to change to salt & pepper shrimp from squid. Delicious and big portions! Thumbs up!
google avatar

Kat L.

Yelp
This is my go-to place for dinner in Chinatown. It's nothing fancy just good food. My favorites are the Walnut shrimp and fish eggplant casserole. There are several large tables that would be good for groups. Note: the restaurant is upstairs (downstairs is a grocery store).
google avatar

Corey A.

Yelp
Went in at 12:10 AM, the staff told me they closed at 1 AM, and not taking anymore customer.
google avatar

Thanh T.

Yelp
Still mediocre but homestyle Cantonese food. My honey walnut shrimp was stale. Gotta step up your game, buddy
