Experts Say Hospitality Is the New Frontier For Restaurants | Eater New Orleans

"I attended the American Cuisine & Hospitality Symposium on September 17, held at the Orpheum, and although the late Ella Brennan wasn’t physically present her legacy was felt throughout the day. Close to 500 people paid about $200 a ticket to hear industry heavyweights revisit a gathering from 35 years ago, with seminars and panels on trends, American cuisine, cocktails, the future of hospitality and its problems. The program was a mix of big-name speakers, local talent and a concluding drinks-and-cocktails panel, all framed around remembering Brennan’s impact on New Orleans hospitality." - Beth D’Addono

Google
The concert was AMAZING! PJ Morton brings it EVERY TIME!!! The 3 stars is because the elevator was out of order, which meant it was not ADA compliant. Seeing elderly men and women walk to the top tier of the orpheum was a bit much.

Just wow! Friendly staff, brilliant sound, and great seating are just some of the things that make the Orpheum such a wonderful venue! The bathrooms are clean and plentiful as well.

When I started planning my wedding, the Orpheum was at the top of my list for reception venues. My husband and I met performing in the theater so we knew we wanted to have our reception in a theater. There are many theaters in New Orleans to choose from, but as soon as I walked in the Orpheum, I knew this was the perfect place for our wedding. I chose very early on to have a 1920s themed wedding reception. The Orpheum being a theater built in the 20s, made it the absolute ideal setting. I had a very clear vision in mind. I wanted our wedding reception to feel like a complete immersive experience. I wanted the night to have a clear flow from a 1920s jazz club to a banger of a party that could rival Studio 54. I had many things happening all night long. It was very much a production. Kelly was there every step of the way to make sure we had a flawless event. It absolutely could not have happened without her and her team. From our first meeting, she was open to all of my ideas and seemed genuinely excited for everything I had planned. From the sound, to the lighting, to the bar staff, to the production staff, every single thing was PERFECT. I cannot express enough how amazing Kelly and the staff at the Orpheum are. I couldn’t stop smiling all night. One staff member even came up to us to show his outfit because he dressed up for our 20’s theme. That made me so happy. They all seemed to really care about us and it showed. Our after party at the Double Dealer kept the party going even longer. Our guests have not stopped messaging us about what an incredible party it was. I can truly say our wedding reception would not have been the same had it not been for The Orpheum, Kelly, and the entire staff. They made my 1920s wedding dreams come true. I cannot thank them enough.

I purchased one ADA-designated wheelchair seat and one companion seat, both at full price, with the expectation that we would receive seating comparable in comfort, viewing quality, and dignity to that provided to other patrons. Unfortunately, this was not the case. We were seated at the very back of the theater against the rear wall. While my boyfriend remained in his wheelchair, I was placed in a hard, uncomfortable chair more suitable for a waiting room than a theater. It looked and felt like a chair out of my doctor’s office. This seating was uncomfortable and not equivalent to a standard theater seat, despite the full-price companion ticket. Additionally, the large open space in front of us was repeatedly used as an aisle/walkway with patrons and staff passing directly in front of our view throughout the performance. This was distracting and made the experience feel segregated rather than inclusive. I didn’t pay full price for my tickets to be seated in a hard, uncomfortable, waiting room chair. I do not recommend this venue to any disabled patrons or their families.

I attended Anne Rice's memorial here. It was a beautiful experience. The theater is gorgeous inside and outside. Even the bathroom was pretty.

Google
Beautiful venue. Wonderful speakeasy downstairs. Historic elegance layered with a modern charm. Wonderful performances and a cast of characters for staff.

Always an amazing time at any event I attend here. Nice options for beverages at the bar with some snacks to hold you over.

Yelp
You haven't lived until you've seen Big Freeda and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra! We are local New Orleanians and wish we go visit this iconic venue and see spectacular local acts like Big Freedia on a regular basis.

Yelp
Just left the Zebra concert. They put on a fantastic show!!! The place is beautiful. HOWEVER...the staff there is rude. Not the bar tenders- every other damn person is rude. The "security" had the meanest faces and the worst attitudes. I get this isn't your "kind" of music or people but there is no need to be so hateful. But their mug shots could never ruin an amazing show!! Will love to see Zebra again soon.
google avatar

DD D.

Yelp
This a gorgeous theater with ornate molding. The acoustics are great. The steps in the theater are steep, and the seating quarters are a bit tight. The bartenders are friendly, and drinks are pretty tasty. Despite the minor cons about the tight seating and steep stairs, it's still a very lovely place.

Yelp
I love this beaux arts former vaudeville theater from 1918. Can you imagine all the acts that have played here? This gorgeous space was closed from August 2005 until August 2015 and I think it's a miracle that it's still standing. I've attended a variety of shows here over the years from the New Orleans Symphony (now the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra) to comedy shows to random events. The acoustics are wonderful. They've refurbished the theater a few times since i first went to a show there (not quite 100 years ago ) and each time they add to the functionality and beauty of the theater. Highly recommend attending any type of show here. And if mobility is an issue make sure to get tickets on the main floor. Warning the stairs to the 2nd balcony (the cheap seats) are steep!

Marty A.

Yelp
Nice intimate venue for jazz concerts. Great to see the artist up close and in a setting that allows you to truly enjoy the artistry. I would bet that any concert or event would do well there!! Only reason. I gave four and not five stars is that the seats are a little bit tight leg wise if six foot or over in height.
google avatar

Brent S.

Yelp
Great theatre overall. Amazing acoustics for concerts. Issue during my visit is this is the most uncomfortable I have ever been in a theatre, and i lived in NYC for over 20 yrs lol. I am 6' tall and my legs did not even begin to fit in these seats. Made enjoying the show quite difficult overall. Literally the smallest amount of leg room I have ever experienced in a theatre.

Yelp
I went to The Orpheum with some friends to see The Nutcracker. It was my first time here, and it's cute but a tad small overall. The lobby and general waiting areas were cramped as we were navigating to our seats. We sat at the front of the balcony seating and the view was amazing. I can't imaging there being a bad seat anywhere in the theater. I've been to several older theaters, so figured the seats would be tight as well. I'm 5'10 and was extremely uncomfortable throughout the entire show. The show started about 15 minutes late, which was irritating because that meant I had to sit in the tight seat for an extra 15 minutes. Also worth noting, you have to get up and step in the aisle if people need to cross you to get to their seats. A couple was late for the show and half the row had to step into the aisle for them to get through.

Yelp
It's a beautiful theatre, in a busy part of town. I was there to see the Andrew Shultz comedy show. Parked next door, but that's a different review! The Orpheum is older, kind of dated. Nice marble stairs. I didn't see an elevator. The staff was good, nice, friendly. I had cheap seats, so ... upstairs and all the way back. I could see the stage, but no facial expressions, and there were times I couldn't hear what was being said on stage. The seats are kind of small and my knees could not comfortably fit without cramming the seat in front of me. I'm not super tall so, it's a consideration. It's ok
google avatar

Michelle P.

Yelp
We visited to listen to the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra practice. They played beautifully. Sound came be heard clearly from near front row seats, in the mezzanine, and near the top. If you see a show here, you'll enjoy it!
google avatar

Emmie C.

Yelp
A place to dress up and enjoy the show. Glad to catch the last show of "The Nutcracker" of 2023. Love the end of Act 1 where bubbles were raining down to the audience.
google avatar

Eve B.

Yelp
The Orpheum Theater is just breathtaking! We LOVED every moment of Four Seasons and the theater itself is out of this world beautiful! Seats in the balconies and logia are a tad tight so be prepared to squeeze in. Seats on the orchestra level are movable and I've heard they are moved sometime to accommodate dancing?? I'd LOVE to go to a concert that allows and or encourages dancing there! No food but drinks are available, no cash. I parked easily at a meter spot right around the corner and didn't have to pay parking bc it was after 6. There are also plenty of garages nearby if you'd prefer that route. Highly recommend you check out the shows at the Orpheum, you will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Saw one of the greatest concerts of my life here in Khrungabin. This venue outside of the Saenger is the best venue to see a concert in the city. The acoustics are perfect and the lighting that came with the show fit the venue perfectly. I will remember this night for a long time.

Yelp
It's been a minute since most people have gone to the theater and while in New Orleans, my bf and I decided we'd check out the Louisiana Philharmonic on their opening night at the Orpheum. Our tickets were the "cheap" seats in the balcony but we had a central view and the acoustics were good. They checked our vaccination status on the way in and encouraged everyone to wear a mask. The masking was not strictly enforced, unfortunately. I did find that they had women's restrooms on every floor, which was nice but getting to the bar on the first floor was a pain. We did find a bar on the second floor. the drinks were expensive and they didn't sell any food. The other LA Phil as I'd like to call them, was great. They did not get rid of any musicians during the pandemic and were happy to play again in a theater with a live audience. It's a wonderful thing to support the arts, even when one is traveling. This theater experience was a lovely one.

Yelp
The theater is so pretty. Plenty of parking around the theater. Kudos to the helpful ticket taker and ushers. I got my three nephews ages 15 month, 3 and 16 years old with me to watch The Wiggles. Both younger one was throwing a tantrum and all three sweet ladies was kind enough to get me in and help find my seats. Once the kids got settle, they had a great time.

Yelp
First if all let me tell you the staff here know something about customer service. They are amazing ! I had a great time during the Netflix Essence After Dark Comedy Show . If I'm ever in NOLA again i will be visiting g here again for sure.

Yelp
The Nutcracker was so good I loved it. The dancers were very skilled and amazing. It smelled so nice in the theater too.

Yelp
Amazing performance & beautiful ambience! Looking forward to attending the holiday spectacular!!!!

Yelp
This is a really beautiful building and has many layers of architecture and design to appreciate inside. I have only been here for Carnival balls and I always have enjoyed myself in this venue. The downstairs bar and the smaller bars on the sides of the upper levels are nicely designed. The seating arrangement in the theater makes it easy to see the stage quite well from all of the seats for the most part. Overall this is a nice venue for balls but I can't speak to it otherwise from my experience.

Yelp
We big praise up front; we flew into New Orleans just to see a big comedian show at the Orpheum. I was on the fence about going, that is until I saw how beautiful and intimate the venue was. We looked at the photos and reviews and figured it had to be good. When we got to the theater that night things didn't start well. The security was slow. The line was very long outside due to the phone lock system they had. I'm for the locking of phones at concerts, but this security seemed ill prepared for the process. That doesn't feel like it was the theaters error though in general. We went across the street and grabbed a drink until the line went down. I may be in awe of the theater just from our seats. We were lucky enough to snag some box seats on the right wall. When we sat down it felt like we were just a couple feet from the stage. In reality were were probably only a few yards. The show went on and it was great. The theater had great acoustics, the intimate small vibe the theater had was great, and leaving was actually pretty smooth. I don't know when we will have the chance again, but if I see a show is going to be at the Orpheum that we really like, I will sure try to make it.

Yelp
Excellent theater for special events - great sight-lines, beautiful lighting, excellent sound. The architecture is incredibly gorgeous. The temporary seating can get uncomfortable and feel packed-in depending on how the room is set and how long you are in your seat. Bathrooms are a pretty tight fit and ladies are sure to get stabbed in the back with the door handle while waiting in line.

Yelp
Surprisingly, my maiden voyage to the Orpheum just happened last night. There have been lots of shows there that I've been interested in attending, but the Southern Soul Assembly gig was the first time I experienced anything at this wonderful theater. Some things I liked about it: - Size -- it's pretty small, which makes for an intimate show - Sound -- from my seats at the back of the orchestra, the sound was great - Location -- Downtown but not impossible to get to - Parking -- Granted, my show was on a Sunday night, but it was easy to find a spot on the street for free - Talent -- They seem to book lots of great stuff there. In fact, I'll be back next week! - Design -- The building has been restored beautifully and is in great shape I really enjoyed my first experience at the Orpheum last night and I am already looking forward to being back for Ryan Adams in 8 days. It will be a bit different since the floor will be general admission, but I think I'll be able to see well since the floor has a nice slope to it and it's not that big. Even being at the back will make for a good view.

Yelp
This is truly a beautiful theater, restoration was thorough and the attention to detail is amazing. I have been here on several different occasions. Once for a screening of the Wizard of Oz with the LPO playing the backup and twice for different LPO performances. Rumor has it the floor on the first level can be leveled out to make it flush with the stage for a ballroom. The seats on the first level appear to be easily removable, but still uncomfortable. The restrooms are all wonderful, clean, well stocked and easy to maneuver through. The bar is classy, well stocked with friendly bartenders. This could easily be a five star venue. You may ask why I only am giving three stars. Let me tell you. The first level, because of the way the theater was built, has poor acoustics, and the sound is distorted. It is difficult to see the stage from the first floor. Yes, I realize that I am only 5' tall on a good day, but one would hope for more separation of the rows, or more of a slant on the floor to remedy even a slight difference in height. On the upper balconies, the view is better, as are the acoustics, however, the rows are close together, making one scoot sideways to move to your seat. Wonderful place, just pick your seats wisely.

Wesley B.

Yelp
Incredible atmosphere. Second time seeing a show there. Would see a third. Easy to access and well run.
google avatar

Nikki I.

Yelp
Gorgeous theater! We came for a concert and could not stop looking around at the architecture of the theater. Before heading in we grabbed two drinks ($46 for two double plus tip, pricey but normal for a concert venue). We had standing floor tickets and had to get stamped to head in. Once in the concert space we also noticed the floor was on a slant to help with viewing so it seemed like most people didn't have an issue being able to see the band. At once point during the concert a girl passed out and the crowd surrounded her to keep her safe until someone from the theater came to get her. They responded really quick so they clearly care about the people who come to events there which is nice! Overall a great experience and would definitely come again for future events. If we were to do it over again we would probably get balcony seats though since the band's style was more sway music than all out dance music.
google avatar

Alberto D.

Yelp
Been to many theaters in my day and this one located in the heart of New Orlean's CBD is something special. This place can be a theater, music venue, cinema, dance hall, or whatever other event; with all the classic old school theater amenities included. Several bars and bathrooms with ample room, yet still feeling quaint and not huge like other arena shows. Easy to get to, hosts great events, and usually parking nearby. I will say this place is pretty close to a 5 star, but not quite yet 5 star material like for example the Sanger Theatre.
google avatar

Yelp
The Orpheum is really nice to look at. The staff was friendly. The show I saw (Post Modern Jukebox) was amazing. My problem? I felt like I was being lied to. You see, my sister bought me Platinum VIP tickets to the show. PLATINUM. Meaning better than Gold or Silver. Which according to ticketmaster when my sister bought the tickets means that you get the VIP experience of getting to meet the performers. NOPE. We got there and were told that we weren't on the VIP list. We checked in with the box office who saw that we were PLATINUM. He was as confused as we were. We talked to the merch chick for the band and she gave us some lame excuse and handed me a poster to try to make me leave (why would a grown woman need a poster?!). Went back to the box office. The guy at the office (I think his name was Ivy?) said he'd call the band's tour manager to see if we could get in. I got a voicemail mid-show and basically he said that they only way I could go back to meet the band was to BUY a GOLD VIP ticket. Remind you, I had PLATINUM tickets. It was all really devastating and confusing. So moral of the story...be careful when you buy VIP tickets (so expensive!) for here because you might get screwed over.

Yelp
Really love the look and feel of this place makes you feel like everything is back in time my show was wonderful and so was everything g else I had an amazing experience and definitely plan to come back!

Yelp
The concert presented by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra at the Orpheum Theater was well worth the cost. Besides a most beautiful place of entertainment the Simply Sinatra Concert was a couple of hours of pure music enjoyment. Steve Lippia carries on Old Blue Eyes songs, personality, and stories that adds to the pleasure of listening to a live performance of songs from our past. Old songs that are still relevant to modern times. "It Was A Very Good Year" sung beautifully before an excellent full orchestra, to me, was worth the entrance price. In addition to the music and stories told Mr. Lippia remained after the concert to meet and greet his admirers. Signed autographs, sold CDs and signed those and took the time to discuss his love of New Orleans and some of his dining experiences. Will definitely be returning when this talented crooner comes back to the Crescent City to entertain us and to wine and dine.
google avatar

Karoline M.

Yelp
Amazing play amazing talent! Come see this place. This is NOT for the Bourbon street crowd.. classy amazing theatre. Great voices great orchestra! Sells wine and drinks you can bring into the theatre.
google avatar

Lacey D.

Yelp
This theatre is beautiful and regal. However, the isles are incredibly close together so unless you have an aisle seat or dont have a row in front of you. It's so uncomfortable, I looked around to see many people trying to sit sideways and whatnot. What a shame for such a beautiful place to be uncomfortable :(
google avatar

Emily L.

Yelp
WOW. This place is breath-taking. The acoustics are off the charts. The art-deco stylings of the bar are so cool. It's such a privilege to go to a venue like this...and I'm so glad the LPO has it's home back. It's an intimate setting, I don't think there's a bad seat in the house. I went with a friend to watch The Wizard of Oz accompanied by the LPO. It was adorable seeing all the kiddos dressed as Dorothy and Glenda! The bar area is a little tight, especially if you're trying to get a drink before the show. We almost missed curtain because it was BUSY and pretty slow. The bathrooms are few and far between. Tip: Order your intermission cocktail when you get a drink before the show! It'll be ready for you while you wait in the looooooooong bathroom lines. The seats were pretty mushed together, but I thought they were comfortable. They have cup holders and a purse strap. The balcony and box seats looked super fun. I might try one of those next time!
google avatar

Crystal L.

Yelp
The Orpheum Theater is beautiful. The ornate details are gorgeous but that's where my praise ends. The upper level balcony seats are so tight and cramped that you cannot comfortably sit unless you aren't very tall. As a woman, I am 5' 9" and I was miserable the entire show. My husband who's 6' 3" was far worse for wear. The drink prices are outrageous as well. For one can of stella and a single jack and coke it was $19.55.
google avatar

John F.

Yelp
Beautiful theater. Takes you back to old New Orleans. Went for the "Music of Ray Charles" performed by Ellis Hall ( who mentored under Mr Ray Charles). Backed up by the LPO. Staff was quick to assist and vey friendly. They absolutely added to the overall experience. The only down thing is the seating. Very tight seating and steep rows, reminded me of the Super Dome . Overall a great time and experience, will definitely go again.
google avatar

Yelp
Was recently remodeled and it is gorgeous! The colors and details are exquisite. The owner's wife and daughter had a hand in all of it and I must say they have great taste.
google avatar

Brian O.

Yelp
Love the theater - really don't like the audience. Beautiful restoration with gorgeous finishes throughout. A little cramped in the upper levels. Maybe the wrong venue for the musical show we saw. Folks arrived late; folks got up to get more drinks constantly; people talked more than listened an then got pissed off when asked to be quiet. Mostly audience in their 20's. They think it's a rave with seating!
google avatar

AuraLee P.

Yelp
Absolutely gorgeous. Pre-Katrina the Orpheum was the home of the LPO (Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra) and the last ten years have been spent meticulously restoring this theatre to its original glory. Stepping inside its doors is like stepping into 1918. All of the paint colors match the original color palettes used when the theatre was originally built. The carpet is woven in the original pattern. The walls and ceiling are decorated in the same ornate Beaux-Arts style it had opened with. The staircases to the upper levels are carved from exquisite marble. It's impossible to be inside the Orpheum and not feel like the fancy is rubbing off on you a little bit. There are bars that serve basic drinks and the bathroom facilities are adequate. The seats may seem a little cramped but the views are excellent regardless of where you're sitting and once the entertainment starts you're probably going to forget about that anyway. The sound system is state of the art, so when you're there seeing the LPO perform Mahler's Resurrection Symphony the final movement will thunder over you in such a way that makes you feel like maybe Judgement Day has indeed come. And if that's the case, you're in the best place to see it!

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful building in New Orleans. Perfect for any type of event from wedding to concerts
google avatar

Bob N.

Yelp
Saw Wilco here 9/28/15, amazing newly renovated venue, the visual aesthetics are stunning. The sound for a rock band was pretty good, but would of sounded better at a venue designed for a rock band. This place will be great for future orchestral shows. Take the Canal St or St Charles streetcar the stops are two blocks away if you are concerned with parking.
google avatar

Giselle C.

Yelp
Went October 22 to see LPO. The place is beautiful and the sound was great but the view was horrible. Maybe it was just our seats (entire row) because we had a bar that split our view of the orchestra. We had to lean forward to be able to see entire orchestra and soloist. We were on the third floor. There was only one elevator and going up those stairs was nearly impossible.

Ashley B.

Yelp
Beautiful theater, helpful staff. However, I wish the ushers would kick people out that continue to talk and be on their phone during performances. I thought being told 3 times to quit would be a "strike out," but apparently not.

Mark G.

Yelp
It is a nice place if you are going to stand, but if you want to sit down, you're in for a long night. The seats are really close together. I was sitting perfectly upright, no slouching. My knees were still jammed up against the seat in front of me. I'm 6 feet tall, by the way.
google avatar

Doug C.

Yelp
Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience at this theater. Yesterday, we attended the New Orleans Ballet's production of the Nutcracker. I find it difficult to believe that they actually sold us the seats that they did since they were so bad. We were in Section 202 and rows CC, DD, EE, and FF. The first seat in each of these rows is fine, but the rest are terrible with no view of the stage at all. There is not enough rise between the rows (no rise at all between CC and DD or EE and FF, and the angle of the seats makes it impossible to see the stage. I was very disappointed with this experience. I wish they would have put something on their website about how poor these seats were since we had plenty of other seat options when we purchased our tickets. But when you look at them on their website they look like great seats on the first balcony very close to the stage. Anyway, I am just posting this so the next person doesn't waste their money on these seats.

Brian M.

Yelp
While the symphony was well performed, it was miserable sitting in the tiny no leg room seats. We were in the third tier at the rail and you get more room on a coach economy seat in an airplane with the person in front of you leaning back.. After sitting confined for about 45 minutes until the intermission I got a leg cramp and fortunately the person next to me left and never came back so I had room to sit sideways to alleviate the cramp. The last time I can remember getting a leg cramp was eons ago. They should have put less seats and spaced them out so those people taller than 5' 2" can turn their legs sideways for room. The people behind me fortunately moved back a row as when I sat against the seat back their knees hit my shoulders. I think I had more room in the womb before I was born. Having never been to a symphony before I discovered that Shubert was a great composer with some depth and variation to his music but Beethoven was just the same monotonous three minutes over and over and very boring. I know everybody else loved the performers by their clapping at the end. I concede the musicians were great and the director was great but Beethoven's composition should have been left in the 1800's from my perspective.

Carlos H.

Yelp
The seats are very uncomfortable and you will have severe lower back pain when you leave the venue.
