Osakana Review - East Village - New York - The Infatuation

"This Japanese fish market on St. Marks Place in the East Village offers sushi-grade fish like fatty bluefin tuna belly and Hokkaido scallop, as well as sushi-making classes that make for a great splurgy experiential gift. But our favorite method of utilizing this spot - which has a sister location in East Williamsburg and is connected to great restaurants Okonomi and Yuji Ramen in Brooklyn - is to order takeout. Not only are the octopus-studded chirashi bowls and 8-piece nigiri sets as fresh and remarkable as you’d rightfully expect from a sushi-grade fish emporium, but they’re fairly priced for the quality at $19 and $25 respectively. Give them a call and place an order for lunch or early dinner the next time you decide buttery, marbled otoro sounds more appealing than an unerotic arugula-hummus wrap." - Hannah Albertine

I took a fish preparation class a couple of years ago and loved it but today I went there for a Keiseki omakase and it was divine! I was not surprised to have an amazing experience there. I knew and always respect their philosophy in food, fish, and standards. I highly recommend everything from Osakana! They totally have my heart and stomach! 😄

Went a Kaiseki tasting. It's my first time dining-in to this place. Five course dishes were quite flavorful and good portion size to me, and I could tell that chefs took time and much effort to those dishes. This kaiseki tasting event can seat up to six guests only at the counter seats, but I like this small yet cozy space where I can be close to the chefs and other guests. Yes, I want to come here again.

Google
It’s a market as well as a pick up-only restaurant. They have a narrow bench inside where you can wait for your food to be prepared, but it’s not an eat-in establishment, at least when I visited on a weekday afternoon. The sushi was super fresh and delicious - the roe was a good touch and all the veggies were seasoned and/or pickled, yum - though pricey for takeout. I was under the impression that this was an affordable option for sushi in the area but it is not. Paid $32 for this bowl of salmon donburi. I would be back when I feel like treating myself.

Google
I ordered takeout today. So fresh and delicious. The price seemed reasonable given the amazing quality and freshness of the fish. They also have sushi-grade fish to taken home and will cut into sashimi for you. I picked up some fatty tuna as well… excited to tuck into that tomorrow.

Small quaint and clean sushi storefront with helpful and informed service. You want to eat, learn, or buy sushi ingredients - this is your joint. A cool part of the NYC experience.

Google
We’ve ordered fish for Sashimi and a few other sushi ingredients. Service and delivery were good and helpful. That being said, the fish were mediocre at best. 1/2 lbs himachi was decent. But 1/2 bluefin chutoro (half fatty) was very disappointing. Received in two pieces instead of one. And the fish itself wasn’t fatty at all and had a lot of muscle/strings inside making it not chewable. Not worth the price at all. Overall with 2 pieces of fish including delivery, and 2 tips the requested (for store and for driver) it was over 100$ for really not much. In the photo the sashimi and nigiri I’ve prepared with the fish.

This fish market is owned by Yuji Haraguchi, who also owns Okonomi/Yuji Ramen. The fish is all obtained locally from the Fulton Fish Market in the Bronx, and because of Yuji's wholesale seafood experience he's able to tell you characteristics of each fish he sells. All the fish is sliced and portioned, and some are already marinated. You can also buy frozen ramen broth. There are many items to help you make a great home-cooked meal. They also consider themselves a fish education center, and offer a number of classes in fish prep, knife sharpening, and sushi/sashimi/ramen making. Everyone here is friendly and happy to offer their expertise.

Google
Best deal to have sushi to go in Williamsburg! $25 for standard 8 pieces, $30 for deluxe one. Their fish are really good. Always call before you visit this place, they run out very fast.

Yelp
We had been here previously to get fish to make sushi at home, as it is a fish market during the day. At night, it turned into a super intimate kaiseki experience with multiple courses of small dishes. There were 6 seats total so it really is a night with the chef himself. Everything was so clearly curated and carefully thought out by a chef with extensive training in the craft and a mind for combining flavors and textures. Started with an uni dish on a cracker. I will never be an uni convert but the cracker was quite nice. The black bass/radish dish was lovely and was served well by the spicy habanada sauce. The clear winner to me was the last savory dish- the curry mazemen. A great amount of crab, such incredibly rich/creamy noodles, amazing spice. The description of how the creaminess came to be was also super interesting and not what I would expect from the taste. The dessert course was also a hit, with a frangipane complemented by yuzu blossom ice cream. The only dish I wasn't super into was the swordfish. The shiitake mushrooms were incredible, but the soubise sauce was on the saltier side and I didn't think the swordfish was the best choice for this dish and would have maybe preferred a flakier fish. The menu is interesting. There were a LOT of words I was not familiar with so felt like I learned a lot as the chef described things. And it seems to change quite a bit seasonally with a ton of forethought. Overall a lovely dinner. Very fairly priced at $75 each. BYOB. I was worried it wouldn't be enough food but I left fairly satiated.

Yelp
I swung by during lunchtime to order the chirashi. A heads-up: they don't offer seating for lunch, as it's reserved for dinner service, which requires advance booking and specializes in omakase. You can opt for takeout during lunch hours (Keep in mind there's no seating available). They also offer a variety of side sauces, dishes, drinks, and sushi slices for purchase. The chirashi was disappointing for two reasons. The portion size seemed meager considering the price point of $20. Having sampled chirashi from various establishments at similar prices, the disparity in portion was apparent. To add on, the sushi cuts were inconsistent in thickness which made me question if portions were consistent with other customers.. While the dish was a quick fix, I could not justify the price for the quality of the sushi cuts.
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly service, clean establishment, and fresh fish. My friend and I decided to stop by to pick up some lunch and we were not disappointed! There doesn't seem to be any seating available so it's just takeout unless you're doing Omakase which is available on Friday and Saturdays. The menu ranges from bento boxes, mazemen (mixed noodles), Donburi (rice bowls), and sashimi by the pound! We both decided to order the Chirashi Bento boxes (7-grain sushi rice, assorted sashimi, pickled vegetables, shiso) and added Ikura - salmon roe (which was an extra $5 each). It took about 15-20 minutes to prepare but you can always walk around the block and come back. The food was packed in a wooden bento box and the presentation was amazing. I wish they gave a bit more Wasabi and Soy sauce instead of just a packet of each per bento. The fish tasted fresh and I'm looking forward to coming back!

Yelp
Okonomi Market used to be Osakana, but this location rebranded and is takeout only. We had an Osakana gift card, which the staff helped transfer over. The fish quality is SUPER. Both the hokkaido and sashimi special bentos were soo fresh. Probably the best salmon I've ever had (and I'm a huge sushi fan). Moreover, half the eating experience of sashimi is visual. Okonomi maintains a high bar with its bento layout. I would love to come back for their Friday / Saturday night omakase, and also grab a couple cuts of fish for a DIY sushi night.
google avatar

Jennie B.

Yelp
(Take out) Got the sashimi for two because some ingredients for the Hokkaido bento was out. Didn't have to wait very long for the order to be finished. The fish quality was fantastic and I was very impressed. Portions are a little small, but satisfying.
google avatar

Tushar N.

Yelp
Surprisingly good bento! I was taken aback at the prices mostly because I was unsure how the quality was going to be. I have been to Japan numerous times and frankly getting quality fish in NY is really a challenge. Many sushi establishments literally ship fish from Japan to get anything halfway decent. I got the Hokkaido Bento to try to recall my recent trip to Hokkaido. I will say considering the expense of sourcing good fish, inflation, and service this was a good deal if you are truly looking for a quality meal. If you aren't a sushi person then its not worth the extra cost as you won't appreciate the flavor difference. The rice is also quite good. The shop itself is very no frills and just take away. I didn't look hard at their omakase menu. It might be worth a shot next time. Food was ready in about 20 minutes
google avatar

Tiffany C.

Yelp
Very happy with the quality of the fish. In hindsight, this was not a bad value. It was like eating omakase at home, with all my favorite cuts. I wish they offered condiments besides wasabi, like lemon wedges or soy sauce. You can totally make a DIY sushi night, by making your own sushi rice, and serving it with nori. This was what we did, and it came out way cheaper than having it in a restaurant. .5 lb of yellowtail - Fresh .5 lb of hotate scallops - So delicious and fresh. Each piece was plump. .25 lb of sake toro - Great .25 lb of salmon - Great .25 lb of chu-toro [They didn't have enough chu-toro, so they substituted with .25lb otoro] - I actually preferred the chu-toro cut, which was just the amount of fattiness. The otoro was the leftover ends, so it was breaking apart. 7oz of ikura - Pretty good

Yelp
"Osakana" is now called "Okonomi Market", so that distinction was a bit confusing to find this place originally. I had walked past it unknowingly twice, and confirmed that the address matched, so I walked in. There was nothing in the glass counter, as some other Yelp pictures had shown filled with I guess specials of the day, so I only had prior pictures to go by. While I was beginning to ponder what I wanted to order, I was greeted almost immediately upon entry, and was advised the whole menu on the wall was for take-out, that they were offering; no dining in. I decided to get the Hokkaido bento ($37) and the chirashi ($20) to see what the difference in taste and quality was like. I had to wait 15 minutes while the order was being prepared, and that allowed me to soak in the decor of the place. The vibe is very chill, with the LoFi music playing from the speakers in the rear, and their knick-knacks were meaningfully selected and displayed with purpose and care. They have two fridges filled with other items to purchase and take home with you, if you wanted a taste for future use. Overall, as soon as I got the two bento boxes, the overall feel of the boxes transported me back to the eki bentos we had in Japan, so for unsuspecting Americans, you might feel you're getting a little for a lot, but these are the portions in Japan! The fish was very fresh, tasty, and the presentation was nothing short of beautiful. Will this fill you up as a meal? I would say no. Would I go back? Yes, I would try maybe other bentos.

Yelp
Ordered takeout last night for dinner. I got 0.5 oz salmon, 0.25 of scallops and hamachi as well as 2 oz of ikura and wasabi and ginger. Everything we had was amazing!! The fish is so fresh and melted in your mouth and the wasabi and ginger were the best freshest we've had. Definitely will be coming back

Yelp
I ordered sushi and sashimi here for my Japanese friend's birthday. The fish was excellent and much of it is shipped directly from Tokyo. It's definitely a splurge but very much worth it for special occasions. I really enjoyed the otoro (fatty tuna) and chutoro as well as the salmon. The fish was so fresh it melted in my mouth. The service was friendly when picking up and it is easy to order on their website. Just be cognizant of the hours and days that Osakana is open.

Yelp
Fresh fish at low prices along with incredibly helpful service--take ALL my stars! I'm really shocked by the 1-star reviews claiming bad service as we had the absolute opposite experience. My friend and I ordered sashimi here for takeout to make our own chirashi bowls at home. You can either order online or through the phone, but it seems like they stop taking same-day online orders at a certain time: we tried to place an order around 2pm but the earliest window was the following day. We called as a last resort and thankfully they were accepting orders. The person we talked to on the phone was very patient and helpful. We weren't expecting to be able to actually order so after naming a few items we were admittedly floundering (no pun intended) on what else to get. He was nice enough to take down what we had so far and have us call him back later to finish the order. We also initially ordered a sashimi omakase along with different quarter pound cuts of fish, but he advised us against it saying it would be cheaper and the same thing if we bought another quarter pound and had everything sliced. I really appreciated his candor and putting customer service over profit--that alone makes me want to return. We got 4 botan ebi (sweet prawns), 1/4 lb bluefin toro, 1/4 lb hamachi, and 1/2 lb salmon. Every item was incredibly good, but the highlight for me was the hamachi. I usually don't care for it too much but it really stood out to me here. I was also surprised by how prominent the sweetness was in the botan ebi. Will be back for sure!

Yelp
Tried a Chirashi bowl here which had some tuna (akami & chuturo), mackarel, salmon, and yellowtail). While the price was awesome (only $13), the fish did not taste fresh and some of the pieces were a bit stringy and hard to chew. I also bit into a couple bones while eating which was totally unexpected & made things even worse :(

Yelp
It was great to get to splurge from Osakana. We ordered Sushi - Tokyo Market Premium set - 12pc ($60) and Sashimi - Tokyo Market Premium set ($90), and wasn't disappointed at all! We ordered to pickup and they were packed in such elegant packages. At first we thought it was a lot of food for two people, but we managed to finish the two sets. For some reason, my order didn't include pickled ginger. Was that how it's supposed to be? Nevertheless, I will definitely order from Osakana again.

Yelp
Amazing quality and great price. Whenever anyone asks me where to go for sushi this is my new answer. I wish I had found this place sooner before going to many places that were more expensive and lower quality.

Yelp
It's true what they say - you eat with your eyes first, and Osakana delivers!!! Their sushi/sashimi plates to go are breathtakingly beautiful and also fresh, melt in your mouth delicious. I didn't take actual photos but I posted stories to Instagram and here are the screenshots. We got the sashimi deluxe, otoro bento, and sushi first class. Gorgeous. The photos say it all. My only complaint is it didn't come with some kind of guide to tell me which fish I was eating, but because I eat sushi a lot I had a general idea. The roe and the mackerel really stood out to me. And the uni. AND THE SCALLOP!!! My partner was able to order this meal through work, so luckily we didn't have to pay for it, but I would splurge every so often to get as a special treat. We had a lot of leftovers with what we got, so could probably do less next time and still be full. And the sashimi was just fine the next day.

Yelp
This was such a hidden gem. My friend and I was walking by and decided to stop by. There isn't indoor dining unless you sign up for a tasting or class, but the sushi boxes are the way to go if you want high quality sushi for just ~40$. It was also nicely wrapped and the presentation was on pointe. Would totally come here so often if I lived closer!

Yeri T.

Yelp
Drove 1.5 hrs round trip to try this place and it was 100% worth it. totaled about $110 for: Chirashi standard: 4.5/5 probably highest quality chirashi I've tried, they included pieces of toro in it!! also the presentation is super cute Maine sea urchin: 5/5 sooo fresh, sweet and creamy - doesn't need any sauce or wasabi, just eat it straight and taste the ocean in your mouth .25 lb chutoro: 4.5/5 super fresh, only not a perfect 5/5 because it got outshined by the toro .25 lb toro: 5/5 melt in your mouth, wanted to order the otoro but it was already sold out mid day, but opting for toro is a great choice and imo fatty enough as it is .25 lb yellowtail: 4/5 nothing special, just wanted something other than tuna and it did provide a nice contrast .25 lb scallop: 10000/5 holy moly my only regret was not ordering a full pound of this. huge scallops that are fresh, tender, and SWEET Will definitely be returning to try out some other rice bowls and definitely for the uni and scallops ~

Yelp
Picked up an order of sashimi and rice from here and it was so fresh! It's awesome that they give so many different options of fish and also let you customize the amount you want. We got the chutoro and amberjack and both were amazing. We also got shiso leaves to have the full omakase experience! Their packaging is great and everyone is really nice there.
google avatar

Shu Jin S.

Yelp
Incredible quality for sushi delivery, I was completely impressed with the Omakase sashimi standard was sheer perfection, every slice of raw fish, more delicious than the last. I also loveedddd the uni (Maine), it was decadent, rich and I devoured the sushi rice along with the pickled ginger. While ordering for delivery does take some advance planning, it is definitely a treat to order it from Osakana. I cannot wait to sample more of their incredible menu.

Yelp
Update 2/2021 - had to knock off a star because items were consistently forgotten with our orders. Rice and seaweed were not packed with the Temaki set (how can one eat Temaki without it?!) If I wanted sashimi, I would have just ordered the sashimi set. However, I'm grateful they decided to credit my account back for the difference but this isn't the first time they forgot items. It's the disappointment of not being able to eat what you ordered. Perhaps there were new additions to staffing lately? The wasabi for $4 was also forgotten a few times and in those instances, I don't even bother to complain because I'm too hangry by then. Hoping they will rectify the packing issues lately. It wasn't like this in 2020 until late Jan 2021. _________________________________________________ So delicious! Finally, a brooklyn place that delivers exceptional quality Omakase! Due to the pandemic, we missed omakase the most and our local area did not have any sushi joints that had fresh omakase. Glad we stumbled upon Osakana and they deliver via Mercato! Now we look forward to having fresh omakase 2-3x monthly. They are always timely and addresses all your concerns or questions. Wonderful for a date night or indoor celebration (as most of us continue to quaruntine). I love that they also sell other Japanese goods like premium hojicha tea and you can order fish in bulk or a whole 100g uni tray (not pictured here because we ate too fast and forgot to take photos). Definitely worth it and always mouth-watering good.

Yelp
While looking for Japanese fermented beans this weekend, I came upon this 'fish market', sushi school and mini-restaurant. They claim to be a market because they sell everything one needs to make sushi at home, and this place is also a School because they offer lessons on how to make your own sushi. They way 'classes' are done is after student makes a sushi, he eats it. Also it's best done with partners (good first date or bonding activity ). BYOB. The place claims itself a restaurant because they also serve both alacarte and omakase options at reasonable prices and in an intimate setting. Not so Japanese but I had fun. Thrash authenticity for now. Walk-in friendly. Curious friendly Okasana, Fish Market, School and Restaurant Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Yelp
I placed an order for pickup at 6pm over a week in advance, but ended up waiting for almost an hour. I arrived precisely at 6pm and one of the chefs asked for my name and informed me that my order would be ready in 10 minutes. No problem. Fast forward -- it's now 6:35pm and the kitchen is filling orders with 6:30 pickup times and even walk-in orders before finishing mine. I am asked again what order I'm waiting for and I repeat myself, explaining that my pickup time was at 6pm. I'm told to wait another 5-10 minutes. I get that the kitchen was backed up, but this was extremely poor operational management. Moreover, I could see that other patrons were similarly disgruntled. Finally, around 6:55pm, the chef that originally greeted me asks to clarify again what my order name is. I confirm for the third time now and the chef takes a bag out of the fridge (I still don't know if that means my order had just been sitting there and I waited longer unnecessarily). To top it all off, not a single apology from anyone on staff. The only reason this is a 2-star review rather than a 1-star is that the fish is reasonably good quality. Regardless, it is NOT worth the hassle.

Yelp
Please avoid at all cost!!! Spent $300 on my godmothers 71st birthday and got the worst otoro of my life. When I called, the person told me I'm not the only one and it's not their fault. I appreciate those of us that spoke up. I though do not appreciate the attitude of 'it's not our fault, it's the way the tuna was killed!' response. Rest assured I will not come back even though the first two times were great. Your attitude sucks and My money deserves better!!!!

Yelp
Osakana is such a gem. I've been here for their sushi roll making class, ramen tasting, and seasonal tasting dinner featuring a visiting guest chef. I've taken home their dry noodles and stocks that they sell at the small storefront connected to the restaurant, which made for some of the most delicious home-cooked noodle dishes ever. I love Osakana so much that I booked them to cater a sushi-making class and mazemen tasting for my husband's 30th birthday - which they of course delivered on flawlessly! Jonathan and his team always put on a great show. They are professional, kind, and experts in both fish butchery and ramen-making.

Yelp
Unbelievable rude chef , they should close very soon , poor hospitality and unapologetic team

Yelp
Overpriced. Tekka Don. Too little food and assembled in the back by some amateur kid, not a sushi pro. I can hear his voice. Save your money.

Yelp
Would give them 10 stars if I could!! The most exceptional above and beyond service! I ordered fish for my sushi dinner through Mercato for delivery. The driver picked up my order but never delivered it.. Mercato even canceled my order. Upon hearing this the store owner apologized for what was never their mistake. Despite their kitchen closed, they volunteered to make me a second order AND deliver it to me on their dime. Completely turned a disappointing night into an unexpectedly wonderful one. Seriously the best service I've encountered from any local business. They just won a customer for life and they should win yours too with their amazing fish and incredible service!

Yelp
Came here for a semi-private sushi making class for two. (I ordered a gift certificate off Gilt City for it.) We made the reservation for the class online. It was just us and one other couple, and we loved it!! The class is BYOB which is fun. The teacher was so helpful, informative, and friendly. We learned some history, how to properly cut the vegetables and raw fish, how to prepare the sushi rice with vinegar, sugar, and water, and three different ways of rolling the sushi. It was authentic, very tasty, super fresh fish, and so fun! Totally worth it and definitely recommend for a date idea or with family or friends. In our class, we got to try 4 different types of fish. They also have a no-tipping policy - they really are just fulfilling their mission to educate!

Yelp
Good, but very pricey. Good God, the prices... Never thought there would be a curry rice bowl with grilled mackerel, but yeah, it was there and yeah, it was yummy. And it was gone a lot faster than expected due to the size of the box it came in aka small (sigh). Chirashi was fresh and again, tiny (SIGH!).

Yelp
My sincere apology -- this is a terribly belated review. OSAKANA to me is like, owner Yuji-san realized my dream before I even knew it. Since OSAKANA's existence, I barely do my grocery shopping elsewhere other than getting my veggies from the local Farmers Market. Yes, I'm so lucky, you'd say, to have this wonderful store near where I live. Not only they offer fresh, locally and sustainably sourced seafood, the staff members are also very friendly and knowledgeable about their products. Recently they are even coming up with creative prepared delicacy like tuna-kotsu, fish roe salad, smoked fish pâté from time to time, to fully embrace the "Mottainai!" (no waste) philosophy. This video by Andrew Gooi is pretty informative on OSAKANA's practice: http://vimeo.com/215457884 In conclusion, I'm not just a fan. I'm a believer.

Yelp
This is my new favorite place to get chirashi bowls. This restaurant is also a seafood market that sells sushi grade seafood and they even have sushi classes.

Yelp
I've ordered pickup here before with no problem and had a very normal experience, unfortunately today I cannot say the same. For my friends birthday we wanted to make sushi! I called at 3:30 for an order for pickup and when my friend went to pick it up at 5 pm (one hour before closing) they told us they gave my order away because we took too long.. keep in mind I called them when she got there to make sure they were open because she didn't see anyone inside and the door was locked and he said she can come in and get the order! He laughed in her face and told her to go to another place. Can't believe how unprofessional and poorly this business is run. Will no longer be recommending or ordering from her again. Get professional employees please!
google avatar

Russell B.

Yelp
We came here because they offered a ramen noodle making class on their site and what a great experience it was. Led by chef Dan, he guided us through the principals and history of the dish. Since the class was only a group of four, he was able to give individualized attention to each one of us when it came to kneading the dough and running it through the pasta making machine. The best part was getting Chef Dan's input on what makes a good bowl of ramen and having the ramen served to us utilizing the noodles we made. Worth the price of admission if you are able to book a class!

Yelp
They stop taking orders at 3pm, not 6! Beware the staff is extremely rude- they laughed when I tried to place an order! buy your fish elsewhere- totally ruined me and my friends sushi making day. go here if you want to hear condescending remarks and get turned away because they're "too busy"....with no customers in sight. Strange, upsetting experience.

Yelp
We came for a late lunch (or early dinner) on a Sunday afternoon and didn't have an issues with getting a seat for the dine in option. Staff thoroughly explained all the day's offerings from the sashimi grade to the cooking options. We ordered a chirashi bowl and yakizakana bowl. Both options were extremely fresh, well prepared, and delicious! Very tasty and very comforting! Price point is very fair for their food and service. We will be back for sure!

Yelp
I love this place. The fish is incredibly fresh and tasty (I am very particular about sushi and sashimi, so this is on a relatively short list of places in the neighborhood where I can enjoy raw fish). The menu is simple and good (read: not too many options, and can't go wrong with any choice.) It's fun to sit at the counter and watch the chefs, and it's an intimate and cozy atmosphere. Great date spot :) Service is a little bit slow, and there can be a wait to get seats but the staff is very friendly and everything is very thoughtfully prepared. They also have a fish market in the front - I intend to come back soon and buy some toro here, it looks incredible!

Came to the uni shacking party with a friend. Such a wonder experience. We learned to shack the live uni, clean the uni and make temaki sushi rolls. The uni are amazing. It's totally worth the prices. The chef is very friendly and knowledgeable. Be sure to get there on time.

Yelp
We came here on a Sunday, walking around for open houses but was fortunate to find this hidden jewel. The first thing that caught my eyes is the simplicity of the store front design and the long sushi bar setting at the back. It is very roomy and beautiful. The most amazing thing is that they display their sashimi fish in a big glass refrigerator box. The dine in area is opened until 5 at the sushi bar. The menu is very clear and have just the right amount of variety of donburi to choose from. Since we weren't that hungry, we went with the sashimi for two. Fish is extremely fresh and they have done a great job with marinating some of the fishes. The only two major down side are that they sashimi is smaller than average, even though with $25 I still find that a bit unacceptable. The rice quality on the other hand is great, but the big downside is that there is no vinegary taste in their sushi rice, which I find to be essential when having a good quality japanese cuisine meal. I would certainly come back to try again in the near future, and I do see great potential in this dine in/delivery restaurant.

Yelp
Really bad customer service, doesn't even cut your fish. The manager is rude when asking to cut the fish in slices. The fish here isn't good either

Yelp
Initially I started following Osakana on Instagram, their fish looked beautiful. I went on and on for weeks waiting to order and I finally ordered a Chirashi Deluxe, Hamachi, and Shimesaba sashimi. I picked up my order only to find that the sashimi wasn't in fact sliced. I called back and was told that it is only sliced upon request--there was no section to request this when initially making an order. I had traveled a little ways to try Osakana and was told the only thing they could do was for me to bring it back. Sushi chefs train for years to learn how to properly roll a ball of rice under nigiri and/or how to properly cut a piece of sashimi. The least Osakana can do is be more informative in their approach. I think it's a great concept just needs some tweaking.

Yelp
This was one of the best sushi meals I've ever had! Every piece was so fresh and tasted completely different from each other. Can't wait for the next meal! Doumo Arigatou Chef.

Yelp
Food is pretty good, but not spectacular. Main thing is that the workers could be trained better. One time I went there, the food took sooo long to be ready (despite there being only 3 other customers), and then it was the WRONG dish! Come on, there are only like 4 items on the menu! Another time, a young Asian (Korean?) guy manned both the kitchen and the fish counter. He couldn't stop yapping about his past experience working at a high-end restaurant, about his lofty future aspirations, etc., which was fine at first. But then, after my meal, I wanted to buy a few slices of raw fish from the counter, but I wasn't quite sure what to get. The Asian guy was very curt and impatient in answering my questions. Disappointing considering this place sees itself as a "fish-education" place. And I guess the guy just likes to talk when the topic is himself, not when it's about the customer. (Alright, so maybe he was impatient because he was alone. So, the owner should add more staff!) And then, he gave me a brief instruction on how to cook the fish (bake at x temperature for y minutes), which I followed when I got home. Guess what, the fish came out still raw. So much for all the high-end restaurant training you got there, kid. I was excited about Osakana at first, but after these experiences, I won't be back. It's just not that worth it.

Yelp
Pristine Japanese seafood salon. Unique fine fish, some marinated in sake and miso. The market cuts your fish to order. The fineness of fish make for a pricey experience. While the shop is set up as a take a way, some like to eat in and there is a small bench in the front. Like Il Labaratorio of old, just a bench makes eating in limited. I hear the chirashi and pole are delish. I had a tilefish sashimi for $16 which I ate on the bench. Iy was fish, fine and refined with a little salt. Overpriced for the experience, but it's a unique shop for sure.

Yelp
We signed up for the uni shucking class here. They shared very little information throughout the class. It was basically us cleaning $40 worth of uni in silence for an hour. The instructor first scolded the couple next to us for not cleaning the uni fast enough, then he went on and on about how we were eating the best rice of our lives. Spoiler alert - it was not. Totally over-seasoned with vinegar. Class ended awkwardly as we showed ourselves out.

Yelp
We were very pleased w the fish we picked up and had more than enough to eat for the two of us! It was nice to be able to bring it home and torch it ourselves since it's so hard to get any counter dining these days! The Maine uni wqs good too but Santa Barbara still reigns!

Yelp
Very bad customer service, the manager here is very rude when speaking to. Very unprofessional, did not mention the sashimi doesnt even get cut for you. How do you eat .5 lb of fish without getting cut? And when asked for them to cut which takes a few mins, they responded they need to close shop. Stay away the fish isn't that great either.

Yelp
6/10 rating. Nice, casual Japanese fish place with comfy atmosphere. Like their philosophy on fish here (local fresh, opposed to imported) and it's super fresh. Ordered the chirashi and grilled fish donburi. Chirashi was a little fiber-y but the grilled fish was nice and surprisingly since no extra oil is used and it's still yummy and fresh! Came with mixed grain rice which has a nice chewy texture and paired well with the fish. Their house made soy sauce is also super good-might be kelp marinated? Prices are reasonable for the quality. They also do classes on fish and fish cutting.

Yelp
While the food is always good It was a huge disappointment that there was not even a single word of apology for making us wait for more than 30 min past the pick up time Especially it was a holiday meal that we planned for and we have ordered approx $400 of food. We understand it's the holiday season but a simple gesture of apology could have made the experience not that bad... it's a pitty

Yelp
Don't bother booking. They just canceled my ramen class without explaining why other than "we're a small business" and sh*t happens.. I booked this class as a birthday present for someone and now I need to figure something else out. Also, fun fact, their phone number leads to an automated machine, no one responds to their texts, and they're slow with getting back on emails so good luck trying to coordinate if they cancel on you.
