The 35 Best Restaurants in Florence, Italy | Eater

"Not far from the Duomo, Nuvoli is one of Florence’s remaining vinaino, wine sellers who also serve simple snacks. Housed inside a 200-year-old palazzo (including a basement level that dates back to the 1100s), the business has been run by the Nuvoli family since 1986 and has become a popular hangout for locals. Lunch service includes boar pappardelle, ribollita, slow-cooked stews, and charcuterie boards, but the real culinary gems are the crostini, housed in a case on ground level. Smeared with chicken liver, truffle, artichokes, raw sausage, and other options, the toasts make optimal aperitivo snacks. Vibe check: It’s mostly standing room and bar stool seating." - Coral Sisk

Great Italian meal experience. Tasty food like it was homemade and a fun experience in the downstairs dining area. The chicken thigh and porchetta were especially good. Clean bathrooms and good service.

If you're fresh off seeing the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore and are looking for a nice local spot for a meal, this one is a really good pick. Filled to the rafters with locals on a weekday night, we were led to a cozy seating room with a giant wine rack with a multitude of Italian wines to choose from. I ordered the Pappardelle al Cinghiale, a signature Tuscan dish of flat pasta in a wild boar ragu marinated in red wine. This one had wild boar and beef, was seasoned beautifully and packed a hearty punch of flavour. My girlfriend chose the Zucchini omelette with roast potatoes which were nice too, but get the pasta if you can. For dessert, we tried the Crostata di More which was quite excellent – a crumbly pie crust went well with thick, luscious filling made with fresh blackberries. If you like a good home-baked fruit pie, you'll enjoy this one. The staff are jovial and pay nice attention to service. The prices are quite decent considering the central location, so definitely a nice all-round package.

Google
Perfect place for lunch! I stopped here and got seated straight away downstairs as a walk in. The food was delicious, I had the tripe and blackberry tart for dessert. The staff were super nice and helpful.

This became my boyfriend and I’s favorite place in Florence. The authenticity, the DELICIOUS food, and the atmosphere makes for a great time. Santo was a wonderful waiter - come visit us in South Africa!

Amazing locals loved spot for traditional Tuscan cuisine. A hidden gem in Florence. Everything was top tier from the waiters to the food. We had lasagne and ribolita as well as some crustini starters and it was all amazing and what's best the prices were really affordable for Florence. Much recommend for a nice cozy dinner spot in old town.

The restaurant is in the wine cellar, which gives a cozy old world vibe. Good food, moderately prized.

Google
Great restaurant with quality local cuisine and an excellent wine list. Lots of the wine is available per glass as well as per bottle with very good prices. The two of us had three courses, a glass of sparkling wine to start and a bottle of white which was recommended by the waiter. The staff takes good care of their food as well as their guests. They really seem to enjoy what they do and like to have fun with their work.

Yelp
To begin with our waiter, Dario, was amazing. He was so passionate about our order. I went to change my order from the pasta with boar sauce to lasagna and he told me it was a traditional Florence meal and we should try it. He was not wrong at all. Previous reviews stated it was gamey... as a girl from Chicago it was not gamey at all. To begin with we had the crostinis and I personally loved the sausage the most and I do not like sausage in the US. We ended the meal with the fried balls of some sort. It was the potatoes for me. Find a way to order just the potatoes. Also the wine for a liter was very reasonably priced (13 euros) amazing. We've now went to Venice and Florence and compared to our touristy ultra expensive places this one is hands down the best.

Yelp
It was kind of hot downstairs in the summer which is my one complaint being an American used to ac. The staff was very friendly here and it felt less of a tourist place which was great. I ate the traditional vegetable and bread soup here which was actually really good. I enjoyed the meal and the people!

Yelp
Agree that this is budget friendly. Unfortunately the food was lacking. Pappardelle cinghiale overcooked. Side of mixed veggies just ok. Best thing was the rebollita soup. The tuna with beans was fine, but the tuna is lukewarm soaked in olive oil. Would not come back with so many other great places. Wine was good.

Yelp
Go for the wine selection skip the food. With a kitchen full of microwave ovens it obvious what happens here.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this little place. We had the white bean appetizer, a charcuterie plate, some house wine, and the cookies with sweet wine. Eating in the wine cellar was fun and the crowd seemed somewhat local? Hard to get a feel for that, but there was a lot of Italian chatter and laughter. Atmosphere was fantastic, albeit small. I wouldn't take a family or anyone with mobility issues, the stairs are steep. I really enjoyed it and hope to return in the future!!

Yelp
Trattoria buona e piatti veloci! Stop by for an authentic Tuscan meal, fast and quick, small and cozy dining area located in the "basement". You may also enjoy a quick snack and a glass of wine standing outside if you prefer. Very close to the Duomo. This restaurant is a hidden gem frequented by many locals.

Yelp
Actual rating 4.5. Out of the Italy Big 3 cities I visited during my 2 week vacation, Florence was the easiest city to eat well on a budget as a solo traveler. The best places to eat in Florence weren't fancy white-tablecloth restaurants but family-run trattorias and osterias where it serves the regional cuisine. For foodies Tuscan cuisine (along with Sicilian) represent the best in Italian regional cooking as they emphasize fresh ingredients and bold flavors. What this meant as a solo traveler was that not only can I get a plate of pasta for less than €10, said pasta can be a meal. Even with a glass of house wine and salad I can still spend less than €20. Fiaschetteria Nuvoli is located on a side street just behind the Duomo. Normally restaurants near major tourist sites are to be avoided but a quick Yelp and Tripadvisor glance suggested a "hidden gem". It also helped that I had just unpacked at my hotel in Florence and I was *hungry*. This was less than a 10 minute walk from my hotel. A "fiaschetteria" means wine shop. There is a wine shop on the ground floor but the restaurant itself is located in the basement. The space itself is tiny - there are only a handful of tables and if you happen to eat during peak dinner times expect to be seated with strangers. But as I was hungry I had an early dinner (~5pm, early for Europe) and there was only a few people but it became more crowded an hour later. Service: Great service, similar to American service standards. Helps to attempt to order in Italian. Supposedly they are known for their crostini but I had plenty of cicchetti in Venice and I wanted a more filling meal. I got a caprese salad (€7) as well as their pappardelle al cinghiale (wild beef and boar pappardelle, €7). Wine consisted of a ~€3 0.25 carafe of their house Chianti. I got a filling meal for less than €20. This would never happen in Rome or Venice. - I know caprese is a Southern Italian dish but I wanted to incorporate some vegetables into my diet. Though tomatoes were seasoned just right, cheese didn't taste too fresh. - I loved the wild boar pasta. I liked the slight "gamey" taste. Pasta itself was very filling. Out of the pasta dishes I've tried in Italy my favorite was wild boar pappardelle and I liked it in the two restaurants that served it. The pasta had the consistency of chow fun, another favorite noodle dish. Keep in mind that the flavor comes from the meat - this is not the pasta to order if you love sauces. If I were in Florence again I'd go back here. One of these days I'll try their famous crostini. PS: They make it a point that they do not serve bistecca fiorentina. PPS: They have free wifi.

Yelp
I can't get over how perfectly the Florentine steak paired with the local Montepulciano. I ate until I couldn't eat anymore. Worth whatever I paid for it... I don't care! It was that good!

Yelp
Fun place, food is so-so. We asked for tap water and our Waiter said they don't do. Then the table next to us ordered tap water without issue.

Yelp
So happy we found this little stone walled basement tavern with air conditioning, excellent small plates for under 10 euro just a block from the Duomo. From outside you would never know. Very cozy. We tried the Porchetta w/ potatoes, ravioli (ricotta y spinach), the steamed leafy greens side and the berry tart. Standard Italian beer selection - primarily 3 sizes of Moretti we tried a nice house white wine. Highly recommended for the unpretentious traveler. Large tables with bench seating means small parties are likely to join another party and may make new friends depending on volition and language skills. I noticed one guest who did seem a little off-put that the benches didn't have backs to lean on- oh well....Americans. Note that there is a higher end restaurant with the Fiaschetteria name just across the street. We inadvertently sat at a table in the upscale restaurant initially but noticed it did not match description of reviews....upon inquiry we were pleasantly redirected across the street.

Yelp
Good food, decent prices. Authentic food and environment. Friendly staff. Cool basement restaurant to get out of the hustle and bustle for a little while and enjoy a beer!

Yelp
Two steps from the famous Duomo Cathedral and down a side street by the store "The End" you can find this tiny little place likely full of people [tourists and locals] stopping by for a snack or a lunch. They tape their menu to the door and the prices are really good - I mean lets be honest here, normally all you have to do is say "traditional" "Florentine" and the center can charge what prices it feels like! sad but true. This was my first time and living here for 5 years, I always am thrilled to discover a new "find" especially when it comes to food in the Florence Center. We ordered house wine {and they give you the choice between Chianti and regular table red}. I am a wino so anytime there is gorgeous wine available that I can have during lunch - I'm game! A mix of crostini appetizers which were very nice if a little too-meat based. So many of my friends have dietary ristrictions [welcome to 2013] which means I have to be careful on if there is a vegetarian option etc. My friends ordered the eggplant paremesan which was delicious and taste like it came out 'cucina della mamma" And came with two peices of fried polenta - score! YOu really can't go wrong with fried polenta! I ordered the 'polpette' miste and I really liked the choices, including the classic type, one made with potato, one with spinach and roasted potatoes. Portions are small but good and the staff was friendly. The irony is that I was just discussing small portions and how it's best but yet when I am presented with delicious food then well, I want more so screw the small portions. Kidding aside, it was fine. I would recommend making reservations since it is a small place and being careful when climbing down the steps to the cellar/ dining room. I am too tall for Italy and bumped my head at least twice. fun times. So if you are looking for traditional looking to match the food - this is your place even though Osteria il Buongustai to me is even better!

Yelp
We arrived here as a group of 12 and they handled us with ease. First, it was nice that the place was open early for us Americans. The food was great. My friend got their signature dish (pork with skin if I recall correctly) was excellent. I got pici (pasta) with wild boar which was great. My appetizer was bread with various patte but the chicken liver was outstanding. Overall, everyone enjoyed their meal. Service was very friendly and our waitress reminded me of Julie London. It is a small place but very quaint. Next time in Florence I will go there again.

Yelp
Small Fun Place ... you can eat downstairs ... Not a fancy place ... wood tables, rustic, but good food at great prices

Yelp
Real Florence food! The "ribollita" was flavorful and the salumi were fresh and local. The environment was authentic and you can tell that you are in Italy. I love it! The wine is fair, good and not expensive. I live in LA but I came from Naples Italy where the food is a must!

Yelp
This is a hidden gem near the Duomo. Great service with amazing food. We got the Tuscan platter as an appetizer and boneless chicken with roasted potatoes for our entrée. Very flavorful and filling. If you can't find it, just ask the locals!

Yelp
This is a lovely hidden little cellar dining room, very congenial, filled with locals and tourists, four long tables fill quickly. Excellent wines, foods beautifully prepared, do not miss.

Yelp
This little place is hidden away in Piazza dell'Olio, which is mere steps away from the Duomo and the bapitstery (head west on Via dei Cerretani and turn down the first street on the left). It's tiny. I mean REALLY tiny. Pay close attention walking down the stairs to get to the dining room, especially if you're tall. The stairway is rather narrow. Once you get down, you'll sit at communal tables. There is normally a nice mix of tourists and locals. Service is good and the food is excellent. The crostini is very good, topped with a variety of traditional toppings such as lardo, prosciutto and fegatini. Their ribolitta is fabulous, as is their ravioli. Wine is available (and is quite good), but normally, I order a bottle of water. I highly recommend this little hole-in-the-wall for lunch or dinner if you would like fairly inexpensive, traditional Tuscan cuisine. They have a great menu, so you'll probably want to go more than once!

Yelp
as mentioned by a previous reviewer... this place is a hidden jem :) we sat in the cozy space and and the owner picked out a glass of red and white for us. tried couple of the crostinis and fried things which was perfect to snack on. most of the locals stopped by to have a drink standing outside. having a smoke with a glass of red just people watching... it was great.
