"Otaru isn’t the only sushi joint in the neighborhood, but it’s our favorite for casual meals and solo dinners. The counter seats put you close to the action, so you can watch the chefs stuff generous mounds of rice and tuna, salmon, or scallops into sheets of crisp nori and place the handrolls in front of you as soon as they’re ready. Fill up on a few of those and sip on a sake flight, then turn your attention to the board of nigiri specials to cap your night with bites of red snapper, mackerel, or the rich, buttery uni that can almost double as dessert." - Kevin Gray

This place has quickly become a neighborhood favorite, and I’m thrilled they decided to open in the area. The food is consistently fresh and delicious, and the chefs are both attentive and kind. Seating is very limited, so I suggest arriving early. While they don’t usually accept reservations, they will accommodate parties of 6 or more. However, I wouldn’t recommend bringing a large group, as the space is more suited for intimate gatherings—perfect for date nights, solo dining, or groups of up to four. Anything bigger can be a bit overwhelming for the small staff, though they still manage well. The food is freshly prepared right in front of you, so if you visit later in the evening, expect a bit of a wait. I’ve loved every dish I’ve tried so far, and their lychee martinis are a must-try. Don’t skip dessert either—it’s fantastic! 10/10, highly recommend!

Very cute inside, Everything was delicious. The A5 Wagyu was so good my husband had two orders- I enjoyed mine with a piece of Uni. All of the drinks ( that we ordered ) had the perfect amount of alcohol, and not too sweet! We are sashimi people and all of their sashimi plates were so light & fresh- just how we like it! Foe anyone who likes things on the lighter side The Brussels sprouts had good flavor, but a little too heavy on the sauce for our taste. I would eat here everyday, if I could.

Google
Otaru is a great addition to Bishop Arts and offers quality sushi for the area. Space is nice and focus is on the sushi bar similar to other Dallas and Fort Worth hand roll/nigiri spots. Fish is quality that said cuts aren't as well prepared as a few others in town and rice fell apart on a couple of pieces. The portions were good but also things came at a higher price. I would go back especially if in the area.

Google
Just what Bishop Arts needed. This place is amazing! Love the vibe 😎and the sushi 🍣is amazing. We tried the Mango Salmon, salmon Truffle and the Volcano roll 🌋Delicious! Shishito peppers were great- sweet and saty. Cant wait to come back and we are still ordering food! There is dedicated parking in the side which is nice cause this care can be challenging. What a great addition to the neighborhood!

Google
Had a great dinner here the other night. The place is small, intimate, and beautifully decorated. We ordered the Tuna Sashimi and the Golden Rainbow Roll. They were incredible! From presentation to taste I was impressed. We will definitely be back! Kudos to the staff! Servers were Jen & Solo and the chefs were Ken, Jun, and Ryan.

Google
Overall, I think Otaru is great. The food was solid, and the service and atmosphere were excellent. I would give Otaru an 8.5 overall. I really like its location in Bishop Arts since there’s so much to do in the area after eating. My friends and I got dessert at Emporium Pies down the street and ended the night at Wild Detectives. The drinks here are definitely a 10/10. I got the lychee martini, and it was refreshing and perfectly balanced. Here are my top recommendations: 🍸 Lychee Martini – refreshing & balanced 🍙 Snow Crab Handroll – soft & crispy 🥩 Wagyu Hot Rock – melt-in-your-mouth goodness 🐚 Scallop Foie Gras – rich, buttery, and flavorful

Google
First experience here. Went in for a late lunch. Started with the fried squid legs. They came out hot and lightly battered. The dipping sauce added a little bit of spice, but overall I thought the taste was a little bland. Went with the six hand roll option on their menu. They turned out to be a bit bigger than I was expecting. Each was pretty stuffed with fish and rice. My wife thought the nori was not “crisp” and that you should expect to get a little bit of crunch texture when biting into the hand roll.

Google
I came here for dinner while doing some shopping in Bishop Arts and it was the best decision! We sat at the bar right in front of the chefs where we could see them prepare the sushi, sashimi, and other dishes. I had the toro and A5 wagyu steak nigiri, which were perfect and beautifully presented. If you're in the Bishop Arts area, come check them out!

Yelp
We will def be back - service and vibes were immaculate. We came as a party of 4 and would order the sake tasting and/or lychee martinis again. Miso eggplant was a nice, warm starter. Otherwise... 5/5 stars: - Golden rainbow roll - Birthday roll 4/5 stars: - salmon truffle ponzu - hamachi crudo - bluefin tuna tataki 3/5 stars: - Ankimo - Spider roll

Yelp
Otaru is a perfect and needed addition to Bishop Arts! Having lived in the neighborhood 11 years, we've seen a lot come and go. This has everything that should make it last long term. We've fallen in love with the size, aesthetic, and delicious menu that has enough for those who like to play it safe and for those who like culinary adventure. We've gone 4 times since it opened and love to go for a later dinner, cozied up around the bar to watch them at work. Highly recommend: the old fashioned for him and the yuzu margarita for her (ask them to make it spicy if that's your thing), start with the Brussels sprouts, then move to the truffle salmon (HEAVENLY! And much more tasty than the other raw salmon plate option), then do the wagyu hot rock (omg talk about melt in your mouth), then end with the volcano roll which isn't a roll at all but amazing sushi stack in a shell under salt crystals they light on fire. If you have a sweet tooth, get the fried cheese cake and sub mochi ice cream for their salted toffee ice cream. Sprinkle in whatever else but those would be my do-not-pass-on recommendations!

Yelp
Otaru is an intimate little space with 4 busy sushi chefs in the middle of the pod preparing some of the most delectable bites you'll experience in Dallas. If it's your first time, go for the omakase. You will not be disappointed or leave hungry. The sushi rice for each nigiri was the perfect temperature, cook and flavor. The fish choices were mostly off of the specials menu. Most memorably mind blowing for me probably was the uni wagyu toro and really with that combination, how can you go wrong. I did come on another occasion and tried several other dishes including the ankimo, miso eggplant app and the mango hamachi. All were excellent. I went around 5:20 Friday evening as a single and was able to get a spot. It filled up quickly in the next 30 minutes. Get there early or make a reservation. This place is a gem.

Yelp
It was an off putting experience. I came in a Monday and that was my bad. The fish wasn't fresh. I didn't care much for most of the rolls and pieces, had no flavor. The only piece I liked was the Ottoro with caviar, that was good. The chef I thought was unprofessional. Told me he was hungry and ate a few bites infront of me. That was off putting.

Yelp
Overall I think Otaru is great. The food was solid & service & atmosphere was great. I would give Otaru a 8.5 overall . I like the location of Otaru better, I like how it's in Bishop Art. That way you can do a lot of activities around the area after eating. My friends and I got dessert at Emporium down the street & ended the night at Wild Detectives. The drinks here are definitely 10/10. I got the lychee martini & it was refreshing & balanced. These are the top items that I would recommend-Lychee Martini, Snow Crab Handroll , Wagyu Hot Rock , Scallop Foie Gras . The only one thing I do have a complaint about is that parking is super hard to find in that area.

Helen T.

Yelp
My friend and I got the signature omakase today and it was a delicious experience! The service was also extremely fast. My favorite was the wagyu with uni!

T G.

Yelp
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. Steve delivered the best experience for my first time eating at a hand roll bar. I've been craving sushi for a while and I got my fix. The servers were amazing and tentative. They made she they answered any questions I had about the experience. The space is the perfect size very intimate. I tried the 6 roll hand roll option on the menu which was very fulfilling and the fish was very fresh, the miso soup was perfect. I will be Otaru my regular spot.

Yelp
Food is spectacular and much better than the closest sushi restaurant in the Bishop Arts area! Britney (bartender) is friendly and very accommodating without batting an eye. She wants (along with the other staff) to make sure your experience, be it your second, third time but more importantly your first experience is incredible. Ambiance is chill and relaxing! I'd definitely mark this as one of the best sushi experience in Dallas!!

Jacqueline G.

Yelp
This place was amazing! I recommend going with a group that's comfortable sharing and splitting/trying as many dishes as you can. The restaurant is small, but intimate. If you're lucky, you can sit at the sushi bar and watch the magic unfold. The servers and bartenders are attentive and kind, answering questions and making suggestions based on what you have a taste for! The yuzu miso salmon was a perfect starter, and I recommend doing the hand roll combos where you get multiple flavors brought out to you in a rather quick succession. They even split them in half if you're sharing with a friend! We got the Flamingo specialty roll to end the night, but I'd definitely want to come back and try the smoked ceviche. So excited to add this restaurant into the rotation and I cannot praise it enough!

Anna A.

Yelp
Such a cute intimate spot. Went for a late lunch/early dinner, the service was amazing and the food was such a great experience. We got the signature chefs tasting menu. Would recommend 10/10

Muay I.

Yelp
Amazing Amazing Place. Took my mother in law here and she loved her first time experience!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND. And we came all the way in from Madison Wi !!

Matthew L.

Yelp
Very good sushi restaurant! This is one of my favorite non michelin starred sushi spots. The fish was fresh, and the chef had good technique, esp with the shari. I especially liked the salmon yuzu miso. Would much rather come here than places like Uchi, and they are around the same cost.

Kelly L.

Yelp
A small intimate and exclusive dining. When you sit at the bar, you will have your own sushi chef who creates all your sushi, sashimi and hand rolls (which they can slice into 2 or 3 or 4 pieces). The care and precious each piece is placed makes each dish an art form. The fish was fresh and each bite was something else ... delicious. It was a wonderful experience.

Rosalyn R.

Yelp
Great first visit to Otaru! Small but nice location with a beautiful sushi bar. The service was top notch and the Omakase tasting outstanding, especially for the price. Each piece had excellent flavor and the presentation was spot-on. Otaru is a wonderful addition to the Bishop Arts neighborhood!

Benjamine H.

Yelp
Food and service is amazing! Wonderful addition to Bishop Arts! We have been back a couple times. Free parking in the dedicated lot to the side although it small. Cant wait to go back again and try other sushi roll options although the Volcano is my favorite!

Adam R.

Yelp
So far this has been one of my top sushi experiences in Dallas. I did the omakase which features 11 courses that did not disappoint.

Ryan M.

Yelp
Amazing hand rolls and sushi. Fantastic and friendly service. Good selection of Sake, Beers, cocktails. Small space but we were able to walk in and get a table quickly at 6pm on a Friday. Could not recommend more!

Ericka T.

Yelp
My new favorite Sushi bar. Service was great the staff is super friendly. The ambiance is sleek and modern. Each roll we got was magnificent. The miso soup was like none I've ever tasted. Superb. Highly recommend this new spot.

Fatima C.

Yelp
This place was absolutely perfect! My boyfriend and I were just driving around and saw this place and we were intrigued! I love how intimate the place is, and the food is absolutely delicious. I would say the price is worth every bite. The food was so fresh and every time we got a taste of the food, it was to die for. Although not picture, the snow crab, salmon, and spicy tuna rolls were also very delicious! On top of the food being great, the staff was so nice! 10000000/10 recommend! My boyfriend and I can't wait to come back!

Lisa H.

Yelp
Delicious food and super friendly service. This has become our weekday lunch guilty pleasure... what a treat! Highly recommend. Very small so come off hours or be prepared to wait at peak times.

Dylan W.

Yelp
One of the best in Dallas, attentive service, intimate setting, and the prices are VERY appropriate for the quality of food! Fresh, flavorful, inventive, and prepared live in front of you! We went for date night on Tuesday and I WILL be returning this weekend

Penny K.

Yelp
Tonight was the grand opening, and they killed it! This highly anticipated omakase and hand roll bar in the bishop arts district is the brainchild of the owners of Kome Dallas. Located in the building where Lucia originally started, Otaru is in the perfect location for those wanting an authentic Japanese experience with the finest and freshest ingredients. We had to try the omakase, of course, and we were not disappointed! The quality and presentation is borderline fine-dining, but casual enough to hop in with friends for drinks and a bite. The max occupancy looked to be about 16 for counter and 4 at the bar in the back. This probably means you'll have to make reservations in the very near future to guarantee no wait and a seat! They're open for both lunch and dinner. Trust me, Otaru is going to get popular real fast, especially in this part of Dallas, so stop by soon and tell the owners Roy and Sue we sent you!

Matt R.

Yelp
This place is awesome in the old Lucia footprint. Im almost scared to write this review as I don't want this to be as impossible as they are to get introduced. Fabulous new sushi restaurant in Bishop arts. Kind of a cross between Oishii and Uchi. Great service, great food. I'll be back soon!

Olivia P.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING! I got the rainbow roll and my husband got the volcano roll, both delicious. Service was also great! This sushi spot is the perfect addition to the bishop arts neighborhood. We can't wait to be back!!

Priscilla S.

Yelp
Food was very fresh and delicious. Service was excellent and enjoyed details provided for each dish. We tried the Omakase and we will be back again to try the chef special Omakase.

Angela T.

Yelp
Everything was Omazing. The fish was so fresh and buttery soft, and the flavor combinations were spot on. I highly recommend the omakase; it is so worth it. Everything was served in a timely manner, and the Chef was friendly and interactive. It is also fun to see the chefs in action, at the sushi bar.

Caroline C.

Yelp
So good. Beautiful presentation. Small intimate restaurant 16 seats so book early! Will definitely be back. Parking in rear.

Ryan F.

Yelp
What a gem! The fish is super fresh and high quality. The staff is amazingly nice! Try the seared A5 Wagyu!

Emily F.

Yelp
Really wonderful sushi, super fresh fish and a great selection. Reasonably priced for the quality and expertise of the chefs. We will definitely be back. Super bonus points for being open Sunday!!

Collette G.

Yelp
The place is really quaint inside, good communal vibe. Sushi chefs are from Japan and super nice. The quality of the fish is high quality. Would come back for sure!

Sarah V.

Yelp
The food is so fresh and flavorful. I got the flamingo roll which is now my all time favorite roll my husband got the volcano roll - served over fire in a shell, also delicious! Great hand rolls too. Good vibes, friendly service. So excited to have this in the area.

Justin V.

Yelp
Omg everything was freaking amazing. If I could give more stars I would. The food was amazing. The service was amazing. The flamingo roll had so much flavor I loved it. My new favorite restaurant. The restaurant it self was a vibe. They played house music the entire time. Mainly Odesza and Rufus! Such a freaking vibe!

Bob L.

Yelp
This is the best sushi I've had in a very long time. Traditional options to rarer fish, this place is amazing. VERY happy they opened ahead of schedule!

Angelina K.

Yelp
decided to do the 6pc handroll set which consisted of snow crab, salmon, a daily special (i got hamachi which was so fresh), spicy tuna, bay scallop, and lobster all of which was so filling. we also got the chutoro, a5 wagyu uni, and kanpache shiitake. the quality of the fish here was so fresh and very similar to hatsuyuki and naminohana!

Orange H.

Yelp
Small and elegant place . Very meticulous maybe because they're not busy yet. Good, fresh and delicious sushi. Pretty sure they will be busy one day where the wait times will probably be in the hours. Highly recommended from an avid sushi eater.

Joseph H.

Yelp
Do you like sushi? Then you will love this place. Be prepared to pay but the quality, service, flavors and presentation are unlike any I've seen in Dallas in a long time. A MUST try. Totally amazing! Black cod and volcano are incredible. See you next week!

Jess N.

Yelp
The experience was amazing and food was even better. Everything we had was super fresh and we got to enjoy watching the chefs prep the food while sitting at the bar. A very lovely experience, definitely want to come back for the salmon truffle ponzu and ama ebi!

Maddox M.

Yelp
The BEST sushi in Dallas - hands down!! Exquisite to watch and a perfect birthday dinner for myself. Will return frequently

Max D.
