My Mom used to go here all the time for produce when I was a tiny toddler. I remember going here with her and over the decades, the size of the market hasn't changed even though their parking lot would give them the room to expand. I guess the charm of it all falls on keeping what was built there from the very beginning.
Although I now live thirty miles away from this spot, it's still worth stopping by when I'm in the area and that I did a few days ago since I wanted to throw some carne asada on the grill when I got home on this particularly nice, sunny summer afternoon.
Here's what I threw in my basket in the ten minutes I was there:
-two pounds of marinated, grill-ready carne asada (at $3.79 per pound I believe),
-a small container of crema (freshly made sour cream),
-a bag of perfectly salted, super crunchy, just the right thickness of homemade tortilla chips,
- a pint of refried beans and a pint of rice from the hot deli,
- a piping hot, freshly made (on the premises) bag of corn tortillas,
- a small container of oh-so-good salsa, and
- a small container of freshly made guacamole
All in all, it cost me about $22 bucks for all this goodness. The carne asada is really easy to grill and fast since it's so thin (I also loved that it wasn't salty). I loved that the gal behind the deli area asked if I wanted to try both salsas that I was contemplating on buying (go with the cooked tomatoes salsa, it's so much more flavorful) and I loved that the guy that packed the carne asada for me was helpful as well.
I'd definitely come back here a few more times when we have friends over for some summer BBQ'ing. It's easy, it's good and I need to make up for forgetting to buy the cotija cheese that's like crack from a cow. I don't know why I forgot to throw that in the basket, but the next time I have a craving, I know I'll enjoy my cotija cheese tacos with a side of carne asada.
