Yelp
We just moved to Hayes and this is such an amazing spot!
I've lived in SF my entire life and I've tried a number of hit sushi and omakase spots in the city including Robin, Hinata, Kasukabe, and more.
What is unique about O-toro is that you get quality Japanese cuisine without the touristic hustle of Japan town, or the upscale stiffness of an omakase set-menu restaurant.
They have outdoor as well as indoor seating and their menu will satiate your fried favorites, ramen, sushi, and sashimi cravings. They also have daily specials that are AMAZING for the price and quality of local fish.
One of my all time favorite dishes here is the Hamachi collar, the fish is a pacific yellowtail, and the collar is the sweetest, most flavorful selection of meat. They smoke and grill this piece to perfection along with a savory dipping sauce.
For the snacks and starters I have to recommend the whole grilled squid, which is so fresh, and the ginger sauce they serve along with it is umami and the chicken karaage. Now, their chicken karaage is special. Most places over fry this dish, make it too hard, or also only serve four small pieces of chicken. NOT AT OTORO. Here the karaage is tender, moist, and lightly battered. Each piece is a very generous size and can be a great starter for four easily.
For the sashimi I would recommend the uni, toro, salmon belly, snapper, and barracuda.
For the rolls they change them up once and a while, so I would ask the waiter what is most popular at this time. Our favorites are the dragon, rainbow, and the Otoro #2.
If you ever find yourself in Hayes, stop by!
