Mario Batali Has Divested From His Restaurants After #MeToo Scandal: What We Do and Don’t Know | Eater

"Part of the B&B Hospitality group long associated with Mario Batali, this restaurant continued to generate income that indirectly benefited Batali until the Bastianich family purchased his shares; Batali had publicly “stepped away” in 2018 and agreed not to enter the restaurants, but the recent buyout was presented as removing the risk that diners would be putting money into the pocket of the man accused of groping employees, even as questions about the sale’s financial terms and accountability remain." - Hillary Dixler Canavan

The Impact of #MeToo on the Restaurant Business Is Undeniable | Eater

"Named among the owner’s 'Mario-centric' restaurants, it experienced a decline in foot traffic and business as the proprietor’s misconduct allegations affected the broader portfolio, though specific commentary about the dining experience at this location was limited." - Monica Burton

Otto Review - Arts District - Portland, ME - The Infatuation

"Every city needs a go-to pizzeria. Somewhere that you can split a few pies with your friends, or just grab a slice on the nights when one drink turns into four. In Portland, that’s Otto Pizza, which make some of the best and most interesting pies in the area and is slowly taking over New England. Here you’ll find pizzas topped with everything from cheese tortellini to chicken, pear, and fontina, but make sure to try The Masher, with mashed potato, scallion, and bacon. There are five Otto locations in Portland, but if you want a break from downtown, check out the Cottage Road location in South Portland, which is located inside a converted gas station and will be a little less crowded than the original Congress Street shop." - Team Infatuation

Ordered two pizzas for delivery. Sorry, they were so good we ate half before the pics. Delivery was fast and the driver was polite and friendly. We'll order again!

Google
When it comes to allergies, they go above and beyond to ensure your safety. The service is insanely good. And the vegan pizza was incredible! Definitely go here! Reminds me of Two Boots from NYC.

Google
Good good pies! Customer service is to me always on point. Friendly people comfortable atmosphere. And they normally always have slices available! And truth be told that’s important obviously I’ve had many of there whole pies but sometimes I just want one or two different kinds and it’s bliss👌🏽 Chefs kiss! Thank you all for your hard work day in and day out. Sometimes folks just forget how much work goes into what makes a place such as this one run daily. I definitely appreciate y’all and I hope the owner does as well!

Google
Great Sterling Pizza with ricotta and pepperoni. They make a killer roasted zucchini eggplant garlic tomato Pizza as well. Great service

William J McGee

Google
Excellent pizza. Had the pepperoni with mushrooms. Singles crust. Had a nice garlicky flavor to the crust. Many locations in the surrounding Portland ME area.

Google
Otto is great for quick in and out pizza. You can order by the slice and they reheat it. The drink selection is limited. I ordered the pepperoni pizza which was good. My only issue was that it was not left in the over long enough and had some cool spots. However, the sauce was decent. Servers were friendly.

Google
Just ordered some cheese sticks and they gave us undercooked doughy bread. We added ranch and they did not give it to us. We didn’t even get marinara. Really?

Joshua Royte

Google
I was highly skeptical of a bean chili pizza, but ended up with a slice because they were out of others, and it turned out to be fantastic! I shouldn't have doubt it after the other great combinations Otto's chefs have come up with. Thanks for a delicious supper and expanding my taste.

Yelp
After a long evening of driving, my troupe and I knew we needed some pizza. We pulled up with 15 minutes to spare, place was dead, seemed like it was cleanup time, and Austin + James reassured us they could make a pie no problem. Tbh, as someone who's worked in food service a while back, this would have absolutely put a hair across my ass. But no, not these two guys. They jumped right in, buzzer beater style and fired us up a 10/10 pie. You'd be lucky to see service like this anywhere else. Thank you guys, I hope your boss gives you some sort of bonus for restoring hope in humanity.

Yelp
I wish I could give less than one star. Disgusting. We have ordered from this particular Otto's in the past and noticed a huge decline in quality and service over the last few years. Tonight we ordered at 5:35 with an estimated delivery at 6:45. At 7:02, we received a call informing us that the salad we ordered was out of stock - no big deal, but our food was slated for delivery at 6:45. Food arrived not warm but ICE COLD. We ordered meatballs - supposed to be six meatballs, we received four (four rock hard balls - no clue how they could be classified as meatballs). The substitute salad did not contain the chicken we paid an extra $2.50 for, nor did it contain Greek dressing. Pizza and breadsticks were ICE COLD, as was the marinara dipping sauce for the breadsticks. We have had issues with this location in the past, but hoped that maybe post-Covid quality and service had improved. Nope, save your money. You'd be better off with frozen 99-cent pizza from 7-11. I won't even feed my dog what we received.

Yelp
This is my second time going since visiting. The service was alright the first time, but the food was amazing (that's why I came back). There was a young man at the counter, Luthundo. He was professional, friendly, and within just the small interaction with him, I could see he genuinely cared. We discussed spellings of names and I was grateful he asked because mine is always spelled wrong. Amazing customer service with a smile and great energy! Thank you for being one of the most positive interactions I've had since being back home, Luthundo. Food was amazing btw!

Yelp
This is a tough break-up letter, but here it goes: I've been with OTTO since the beginning (2009); back when you could get *enormous* slices for $3 on Congress St at 2am in the morning and that was pretty much all they (or the city at that literal time of day) offered. A decade plus later and some things have changed for good... and some for the very bad. At least that's how it feels ordering from Read St. Every. Single. Time. I have ordered delivery from here: 1) my order is wrong, or 2) my pizza is burned black, or 3) my pizza isn't cooked at all, or 4) my order is missing something. We hadn't ordered from here in awhile; the last time we did, we waited 90 minutes for our pizza (we were told it was a 60 minute wait). When we called to find out where our pizzas were, the person answering went, "oh sh*t" and then hung up. When we finally did get our order (another hour later), three of the four pizzas we got were completely wrong (all of them were covered in meat, for example; we very specifically mentioned which pizzas were vegan and which were vegetarian just in case too.) Last night all I wanted was a ricotta, basil, tomato pizza from OTTO like I remembered it being: big, hot, loaded with toppings. But that's just not the pizza I got. It was the smallest large I've ever gotten (we joked that a frozen pizza the same size would have cost less, considering this pie was $30), and it definitely had been sitting around for a while because the cheese was completely congealed. Also, there were so many burned bits under our pizza, that every time we picked up a slice our fingers and palms were covered in charcoal. You can't see it, but I just heaved the heaviest sigh. I'm so disappointed. Maybe other locations are better, but this is the spot that delivers to my current address and I absolutely cannot recommend it.

Yelp
Great slices at a reasonable price! Pleasant and polite service. What's not to like? They can never take the bacon mashed potatoes scallion pizza off their menu!

Yelp
Great pizza...inclusive to many diets, tasty beer and excellent service. We usually have a hard time accommodating my husband with his dairy and wheat allergy but at Ottos he was in major luck. They offer gluten free crust and vegan cheese. Their pizzas are cooked in nice large oven and are thin and crispy. They have a plethora of creative pizzas you can't find anywhere else like mashed potato pizza (I'm not that brave). We stuck to the basics and we were super happy. My husband got a gluten free pizza with vegan cheese and pepperonis. He said it was the best crust he's had. My father in law got the Margherita pizza which was delicious. Lastly myself and my Husbands Aunt shared the Fresh Mushroom, Bacon and Vidalia Onion Pizza. It was very tasty but I do like more sauce and cheese on my pizza personally. Their pizzas are really big to be honest so we had plenty of leftover. We also ordered a nice big salad and it was enough for the entire table. To go with our meals a few of us also enjoy some beer. They have a great selection of craft beers. Our food was fast and service was friendly. Overall 5/5 stars and we can't wait to visit again in the future. We visit Brunswick most often and a little birdie told us they will be opening a location there.

Hona L.

Yelp
Great food, great help. Great service. Can't say enough good about the place. Wouldn't buy pizza anyplace else.

Carmen P.

Yelp
Updating because even though the management asked that I reach out (I did) they never responded to my email. I have a feeling that they respond to reviews to make it look good but it's just lip service though.

Emily W.

Yelp
The pizza here used to be awesome! For the price you pay it's inconsistent. One of my pizzas was undercooked...which I can fix by putting it in the oven, not ideal but whatever. The other pizza I got was over cooked and the toppings were sad. For $50 for two small pizzas, at lease throw some canned fruit on the whole thing.
google avatar

Kayley W.

Yelp
I received a disgustingly brown caesar salad in my take out order. I tried to pick out the brown lettuce before putting the dressing on, but all of the lettuce was brown. It looks like it's been sitting pre-made in a fridge for a week.
google avatar

Yelp
I don't usually post poor reviews about a business, but the pizza we got over the weekend was inexcusable. We asked for extra sauce on our sausage pizza and it was so dry and fairly flavorless. The pizza oven needed to be swept out in the worst way. The burnt semolina on the pizza deck just made our pizza taste nasty. It just was a sad experience.

Benjamin L.

Yelp
We really like Otto's pizzas generally, and we have always had a good experience at this location. Unlike the Congress Street location (you can check out my separate review), the Read Street location is organized and seems pretty well run. We have had a few experiences of over and under cooked pizzas, but still the best pizza in town!

Whelch F.

Yelp
We've ordered from Otto 3 times since moving here recently. All 3 times there have been issues. Once we had toppings so sparingly applied that I felt ripped off. The second time, they totally forgot a topping (and I WAS ripped off). And the other day, the pizza was burnt on the bottom. We didn't notice until we realized the pizza tasted burnt. If the pizza didn't taste good, we would have bailed by now, but they don't have many more chances because we're trying all the pizza in the area. Do better or lose money, guys.

Yelp
Pizza was tough, one was overcooked , and ranch was tangy but not in a good way. Garlic bread was tough too. I tried reheating the pizza in the toaster oven later and it still was below average.

Yelp
Read street location Portland maine , I go to almost weekly, great staff, great service and very good pizza , love going there

Yelp
Great food and exceptional customer service. The team at Read Street was super helpful!

Yelp
I've seen the OTTOs around town, but I've never had a chance to try it... until now. I like how this OTTO's is a large venue where you don't feel rushed. Its got plenty of seats/tables for you to actually have a sit down meal. The lady who took our order was incredibly nice. My partner is highly allergic to dairy, & I loved that she made sure the staff put no cheese! I had the Margherita Pizza. My only complaint was the amount of basil:tomato ratio was not what I wanted! They put a ton of tomatoes, and not enough basil. Since I had a ton of tomato sauce as my base, and a ton of tomatoes for my topping, that's all I tasted! The crust was slightly burnt as well, too crispy for my liking.

Yelp
Amazing!!! Delicious!!! It's all about their seasonal specials!!! Right now... the asparagus pesto prosciutto amazingness is worthy!! On other notes just the cheesy bead with meatballs and salad are delicious!!!
google avatar

Yunica J.

Yelp
Plainly put, this was just not good pizza. I've had better pizza at a baseball stadium and at major pizza chains. The delivery service was very fast and good though! The pizza was soggy and watery. There was too much sauce relative to the bread and cheese, and the sauce wasn't good. The crust was also a bit burnt on the bottom. The ability to customize the pizza is great though, but customizability does not compensate for subpar pizza.

Yelp
So if you follow me, you know about my saga with OTTO at this location over the last few months. Trying to get a slice and a beer seemed to take an Act of Congress. Full Disclosure: prior to the Holidays in a conversation the 2nd manager I spoke with did apologize and handed me a gift card. Which is still sitting on my bureau which is another story. Ha ha Anyway. Why I returned since then is really location and I like the specials. So I have been here twice in just over a week. Once alone and recently with someone. Both times the staff have been attentive and the service was top notch. The woman at the bar (unique name which I can't remember) was fun and sold me on a beer Wave and the Spicy Bean and cornbread slice. A match made in heaven. Recently I went and it was crowded. I when I walked in I did state we might regret this decision. I was wrong. The server Lacy, new but was so attentive and obviously trained. The food was timely and not over cooked. Ate the whole pie. I did talk to the supervisor that night and shared my experience and the back story which she remembered. Since I did not identify myself nor used the gift card, this is a solid review. Thanks for giving me back a nice hide away close to home.

Michael T.

Yelp
Otto is the best pizza we've ever had. I've lived in Portland for about 45 years and ever since Otto Read St opened, it's a weekly thing for us. It's not always consistent but always good. Now I'm told that Monte's is also really good, but I just can't bring myself to go there. Do they deliver too?

Yelp
Daughter wanted pizza and we wanted to stop on our way to Portland airport from bar harbor. Found this place on yelp! It's slightly out of the way - not sure in comparison to rest of Portland center. But it's worth the trip!! We got slices so we could try the special and other pies. Everything was amazingly delicious!! We had the cherry tomatoes, basil, and honey ricotta cheese slices, cheese for my daughter which was thin and crispy and she loved it, and the bacon, scallions, and mashed potatoes pizza slice!! So flavorful and delicious!! Highly recommend this place if you can make it!! Also had an Allagash and chip cookie !!

M W.

Yelp
Otto pizza is among the best of the best in Portland. The Spinach, Kalamata Olive & Roasted Garlic pizza is absolutely delicious! The service at Read Street is the best. The service at locations can be hit or miss, especially in Yarmouth!

Pat W.

Yelp
When I'm stressed and tired, I will order an Otto pizza delivered, and Otto never fails me. My pizza arrives hot and delicious, on time, and the driver follows my instructions. Try the "extra sauce" option -- it's life-changing.

Judith B.

Yelp
First time at Otto's last night to celebrate my birthday, and the three of us had a magnificent experience. The service was warm and prompt, the choices of pizzas quite unique and very tasty, and our waitstaff, Kam, was most attentive and kind. He turned down the music when we requested it, and was knowledgeable about the food and alcohol service -- we began with delicious Prosecco. When he found out it was a birthday celebration, he brought each of us one of their delicious, chewy, chocolate chip cookies! Yum! The booths, while wooden, were quite comfortable and provided some privacy and noise dampening. It's a pizza joint with real flare! I would go back on a regular basis.

Deborah K.

Yelp
The gluten free pizza was on par with spris in Miami which is a high compliment! I had the eggplant ricotta and basil and it was great. I couldn't finish and took the rest to my hotel. I also got a pinot noir and surprisingly it was about double the amount one would normally expect. The rest of my family got the tortellini and mushroom pies. Overall a bit pricy but very good experience.

Yelp
Ive probably been to OTTO more than 25 times. Quality and service at the Read St. location have declined significantly within the last 6-ish months. Currently been sitting at the bar for over 45 minutes waiting for my pizza. I'm literally the only customer in here. Update: I wish I could give zero stars. After asking for a refund they finally "found" the pizzas that I had ordered and offered to give them to me for free. Ice cold OTTO pizza and they didn't even offer to reheat the pies. My credit card still has not been refunded.

Erika T.

Yelp
Ordered a pizza tonight with a 2 1/2 hour delivery time frame. It's now 10:15 PM, Otto is closed and I HAVE NO PIZZA! What kind of business is this? Take my money and don't deliver a product!?

Z P.

Yelp
I ordered a pizza here last night. It was...barely okay. It was thrown way too thin, with too little cheese, and the pulled pork topping was almost nowhere to be seen. I can't believe I paid $28 for a large pizza (with tip) for a dried out super-thin crust with very little cheese or topping. I ordered at the counter, and there was no one else in the restaurant. Even so, I waited nearly 30 minutes for my pizza. Come on, folks, it doesn't take that long to make a pizza. Really not impressed.
google avatar

Josh W.

Yelp
Visit the Otto's on Read St in Portland, the pizza is AMAZING. We usually get a couple pies for lunch or late meetings at work and I haven't found one I didn't like. The mashed potato pizza is so good, the pulled pork and mango is the best, the pineapple and bacon and the all pork special, my mouth is watering writing this review! Love these guys, they're always so friendly, from the restaurant staff to the delivery drivers!
google avatar

Lisa H.

Yelp
Soooo good! We love getting take out pizza here--consistently delicious and don't forget the 5 pack of cookies. We've never done sit down there, but the place is really cozy. Quick and fresh food, worth a trip. Highly recommend!

Catherine Mary W.

Yelp
"Fall speciality pizza, squash, ricotta, cranberries, fresh and inviting." I bought this pizza last evening; it was the best yet, flavorful, hot, and cooked perfectly. I am hardly wait to order another of their fall pizzas.

Laura P.

Yelp
Delicious wonderful pizzas salads and the service is always top notch . We enjoy the Read St. Ottos in Portland and we usually carry out. Our order is always ready when promised. Ottos pizza has the best crust ,ratio of cheese toppings and we love ordering the old school sauce where the sauce is under the cheese. Love the sausage and onion and mashed potato pies. Ordering through the app is seamless as well. Great loyalty program where you earn coupons for future orders with dollars spent .Ottos keep doing it right .

Suzanne D.

Yelp
Love the pizza, and counter service on pick up our two pizzas was friendly and prompt. OTTO pizza is one of my favorites! Did not eat inside so cannot comment on ambiance.
google avatar

Courtney C.

Yelp
Otto pizza is my favorite pizza in Portland. I said it. So many unique options that you can't get anywhere else. Are you looking for a ton of vegan/vegetarian options? This place is for you. The best pizza is the Butternut squash cranberry ricotta. Seriously it's delicious. The bacon mashed potato is always a crowd pleaser too. You really can't go wrong, GET ALL THE PIZZAS! It's a little more expensive than other pizza joints, but it's way worth it. Loving this smaller "outside of downtown" location. You can park there and not be overrun by the crowds of the city. Get the OTTO app on your phone and earn rewards. ir

Malachi W.

Yelp
ordered 3 times... in one week... and i don't even remember but chances were those days were back-to-back. Ever since I found out about "Old school" sauce where instead of the dollops it's just evenly spread out, i've found my new favorite pizza joint in the city. and i'm a portland native i've tried them pretty much all.
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
Otto is hands down the best pizza in southern Maine! Great toppings, great crust, great everything!

Christine P.

Yelp
Great pizza enjoyed by everyone at my luncheon meeting. Otto's never disappoints. Delivered when I needed it by a friendly driver.

Jane A.

Yelp
Yummy pizza, easy ordering system and quick service. Have only been for pick up, but looks like a cool place to grab a bite too!
google avatar

Jill I.

Yelp
I love that every Ottos has a different atmosphere. This one has a great open kitchen you get to see everything. The pizza was so good. We got the potato, bacon and scallion and the squash, cranberry and ricotta. These are our 2 favorites, but also love the margarita and just plain cheese. The staff was so nice and the place was hopping.

Molly M.

Yelp
My order never arrived. I waited for two hours, called three times to check in and was told it should be in the way. My last call I was told the driver said he delivered it and already went home. I asked for a refund. So disappointing as we stayed up late to wait for our dinner which never came and most other places in Portland were already closed for takeout.

Will W.

Yelp
I'm actually not a local and I'm certainly not one to leave reviews online but Otto's really is that good. I'm from Raleigh, NC and I have been here in Portland for work for the past 2 weeks. Not knowing any good local spots to eat, Otto's was right around the corner from my Airbnb. I've literally ordered like 8 pizzas from here and I'm genuinely going to miss this place when I go back home. The bacon hot honey pineapple pizza is money. I highly recommend checking it out. You may be like me and order from this place almost every night.

Cheryl V.

Yelp
Excellent crust as well as toppings on the manchego, mushroom and herb pizza we recently purchase as takeout from the Read Street location. After having bad luck with other local takeouts, we decided to give Otto another try (even though it is further than is desirable), and we were not disappointed! A few minutes in a 250 degree oven, pizza heaven!
google avatar

Stephanie V.

Yelp
I always love ordering from ottos. Now that they have a place on read street it's more accessible than driving down to old port. They have their 4-6 happy hour where you can get a free slice woo woo! Came in for some meatballs and a chicken and Basil Pizza. The meatballs came out within 5 minutes; we ended up saving the sauce for dipping our crust in! The pizza was on point as always. I grew up on pizza in Brooklyn NY so it's usually hard to impress me on pizza places but Otto's knows how to cook a pie.

Donald B.

Yelp
Always a great experience with Otto's whether eating in, taking out or delivery! This was a delivery - great pizza and excellent service and delivery by a friendly driver!! Thanks...
google avatar

Jessica D.

Yelp
Pretty good. Variety of slices at lunch, never too busy that you have to wait, several locations to pick from depending where you are in town.

Drew K.

Yelp
Always consistently delicious! The online ordering and delivery system is great too. We have out of town visitors always requesting an Otto night when they stay with us.
google avatar

Maria G.

Yelp
I love all Otto's locations and have eaten at all, but this one is the best! The service, quality, and attention to detail is amazing. I go out of my way to hit this location because it's consistently amazing every time we go! Months later after consistent ordering, I went to get a pick up order and it was incorrect. They were so pleasant and gracious about it and remade the pizza and let us keep the one that was incorrect. You don't find that level of customer service anywhere anymore and this is why I love this location!
google avatar

Ella H.

Yelp
I ordered the monthly special, 3 mushroom and cheese pizza. Looked yummy and I added chicken. But very few mushrooms made it to my pizza. Come on Otto's! You can do better than this. I'm a loyal customer. Provide the pizza you advertise!
