The Best Breakfast Restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Our Kitchen, a tiny diner on West 36th Street, looks more like a country cottage than a bustling breakfast spot. But step inside for one of the best diner breakfasts you can find in Minneapolis. The pancakes are rough-hewn and studded with chocolate chips; the hash browns have a golden, crispy lid. Fair warning, you may have to wait to snag one of the bar stools." - Stacy Brooks

The Best Old-School Diners in the Twin Cities | Eater Twin Cities

"Our Kitchen looks almost more like a quaint English cottage than a greasy spoon, but don’t be fooled. This 1941 diner has a small, single griddle, where the cook masterfully Tetrises hash browns, sausages, and bubbly pancake batter. Our Kitchen might be best-known for its hash browns, which are thick-cut and have a crunchy golden lid. Be prepared to wait for a table on the weekend." - Justine Jones

I've been wanting to come here for a while and I'm glad I finally did. Breakfast was delicious! The inside is small and intimate but that's part of the charm. The price was higher than I expected (though not any higher than what it costs to eat out these days) and the quality and quantity of food make up for it. Big portions and everything was superb. The hashbrowns were nice and crispy, the bacon was crisp but not overcooked, and the eggs were cooked perfectly. I got a pancake instead of toast (no extra cost) and the pancake was huge! It was light and fluffy. My only complaint was the wait time. The server was attentive but there were only 2 people working so it took a while for the food to come out since the place was pretty much full. The food was well worth the wait, though. I will definitely be back!

Google
It’s all about the atmosphere and service here, definitely unmatched. With one waitress serving all clientele, her service was unmatched for always being on top of water and coffee refills. Patience is the key if you come on a day that is busy or if you come with a party of more than 2 as it has very limited seating.

Google
Super cute spot - tiny, cozy diner vibes. The staff are great, really friendly and attentive. We loved our food and the whole experience, would definitely recommend! It does get busy, so expect a wait if you go around a “popular” breakfast/brunch time.

Rebecca Seppanen

Google
The pancakes and eggs were great. Some of the best pancakes I've had in a while. So filling I had 2 eggs and a pancake. Server was really friendly. This is not a place if you come with maybe more than 4 or 6 people. They have some seating outside. It's mainly a small diner with front seating and some seating indoors and some patio seating. I don't remember how much the patio seating holds.

Michael Wells

Google
A small and cozy diner. That feels like a step back in time. The food is delicious. I love their pancakes sum off the best in the city. The portions are large the first time I've ever had to get a to go box.

Google
Other than not literally being a hole in the wall, this is a hole in the wall. Super tiny space with only counters inside and a few tables outside. Menu is spare but follows the belief that "brown good tastes good." We went for breakfast and had the basic breakfast platter and the Eggs Benedict. Very healthy servings and everything was delicious. There was a single server and she was fast and focused while still friendly. Great overall experience.

alejandra basurto

Google
The place is tiny so most probably you will have to wait but is 100% worth it. The pancakes are made in heaven, the best combination is blueberry pancakes with beacon, the best in Minneapolis no doubt

David Speidel

Google
The food is delicious. The pancakes are especially yummy and made from scratch. It's a cozy place so be patient.

Yelp
Awesome atmosphere. Very popular breakfast and brunch spot! Service was as quick as it could be and the staff were friendly.

Yelp
Fantastic, classic diner in south Minneapolis for those mornings when you need burnt coffee, greasy hash browns, and a pancake the size of your head. It checks all the boxes of a fast-order breakfast joint. 10 top counter? Check. Will you smell like butter and breakfast sausage from a tube the rest of the day? Absolutely. I wouldn't want it any other way. The server and cook were friendly and we got a nice cup of (perfectly) bitter coffee to help take the edge off a rough Sunday of one too many. At 7:30 it was relaxed but folks were starting to roll in when we left around 8am. I'll say if you want a gourmet experience you're on the wrong place. Everything comes prepackaged except the pancakes. Sausage squeezed from a plastic wrapper, Sysco bread, and potatoes from a tub. But that's exactly what I want from a diner! I'm here because I'm hungover; not to chat with James Beard. Hash browns have 2 cups of clarified butter dumped on them and are pressed and left until perfectly tender with a crispy shell. 10/10 would upset my cardiologist again. Sausage is classic. Pepper and sage forward. Smashed to give lots of crispy lacing. Eggs were scrambled well and not rubbery at all. The fact that you can get a plate-sized pancake as a carb vs toast is the best part. They're scratch made and pretty good. Nice and tangy from the buttermilk while being relatively fluffy. Could use more seasoning overall but it hit the spot. Overall it scratched my Waffle House itch at a higher price point and slightly better quality. I'll definitely be back more often for the pancake and free refills.

Yelp
Happened to look this place up and decided to go in one day . I've been coming back often because of how great the food is and the great customer service at the counter from Molly and Danny . They both do such a wonderful job making this place great .

Yelp
I have not been to Our Kitchen in awhile and I was not disappointed. Hard to find a restaurant that continues to consistently produce great food in a tight space. Granted I had eggs, bacon, hash browns, and toast, but to take simple ingredients and take them to their best flavor is impressive. Hash browns best in Minneapolis. Cheers to the chef.

Yelp
Two of us wanted to try this place out after checking out a house in the area. We were completely ignored by one of the servers--neither took our names or let us know how long the wait would be. I know they do this because they said the party's name before us, and they gave estimates/chatted with others there. One finally said hello to us, the other checked-in with everyone but us. Later, the latter were asked if we wanted to sit inside or out--was very cold to us. This whole time, we debated leaving--and we should have--because of how we felt. I went inside to speak to the other server and let them know that we were waiting head of the two guys that just got there, and the other server got very agitated at me, raised their voice, and EVERYONE eating inside stared at me. They said that "We cannot serve you here" (after I asked for the other server). I felt humiliated and gaslit. This was the most explicit racism I've ever faced in the Twin Cities when trying to eat out. I'll never go there again, and you can take my word for it or not. It's how we felt we were treated and will never return there even after that server may no longer work there. This experience has also made me rethink living in that neighborhood out of fear that this is normal. We went to Victor's 1959 Cafe after, and the server was absolutely lovely, but our day was ruined by this experience.

Yelp
I'm obsessed with Al's breakfast in dinkytown for the retro vibes and tiny local place, so I've been really excited to try Our kitchen for the similarity. It lived up to the hype and is a great brunch option in the Uptown area! We waited around 20 minutes at 10:30 on a Sunday. With the limited seating and singular grill to prepare food, it was a longer brunch experience but definitely worth it. The staff were friendly and efficient at bringing people in and out. I tried the pancakes with blueberries and chocolate chips and would definitely recommend them. Very buttery and on the denser side, which I prefer. Be prepared for a wait on the weekends but the food and vibes will be worth it!

Yelp
First off I randomly saw Timberwolves player Jaden McDaniels here!! (I'd post the pic, but he asked me not to so to respect his wishes I cannot) This place is amazing!! Very classic diner vibes, but everything here is scratch made even the sausage patties. They only have one grill so if you have any allergies like celiac this isnt the place I'd recommend. They do make as good of an attempt as they can, but it's just a size problem they dont have enough space to be 100% safe. Everything is amazing here, thick pancakes, hearty bacon, good sausage. And I love the service and staff! There's a picture of the main line cook when he was like 15 !! And it's been running since 1942 which is crazy. The best breakfast spot around here absolutely. I always get the breakfast special and i always leave with another meal or two of leftovers and if you do it that way it's cheaper than even franchise restaurants and much, MUCH better quality. You sit down in our kitchen and it really just feels like your kitchen in the best way. Classic, delicious and serene is how I'd describe this place. Don't disrespect it by coming in a rush, they have limited seating and staff, but trust me they're doing everything they can to get the food out to ya as soon as they can. Generally not sure if I've ever seen their staff stop moving for long periods of time lol.

Yelp
We stopped at Our Kitchen during a pretty busy time in the morning. They were so pleasant and busy. We waited a bit for our food; probably no longer than anywhere else. The food was fantastic! Real hashbrowns and crispy, nice crispy bacon, egg perfectly done over easy, and toast. I was told by the older gentleman next to me that the pancakes were great. A great experience!
google avatar

Leah S.

Yelp
Such a great spot to have a breakfast date with my son! We enjoyed patio seating and got there before the crowd! Service was quick and accommodating to my coffee needs and my sons endless questions! Pictured the huge, fluffy waffles!!!! I had the egg and cheese sandwich which was also good!

Kathryn E.

Yelp
I was anxious to try it out and made a real effort to get there, but get inside and get a menu? Forget it. All kinds of signs posted about 'wait to be seated', and then finally a very rude hostess who just matter-of-factly said I'd have to stand for at least 15 minutes. I told her 'Forget it'.

Hugh S.

Yelp
Love this place. Go to order is the skillet with the side blueberry pancake. It's so good. Blueberry pancake is an absolute must have. Just a heads up that they do only have one cook/stove top so they're limited on how fast they can prep food.
google avatar

Yukio T.

Yelp
This little breakfast place gave me feeling of warm and active. Everything is delicious and people are up and going. Very small for the group of people, so you probably have to wait to get seats. Foods were big portion, couldn't even finish mine lol. Service feels like I'm in NYC, she was fast and get to the point, I like that style of service so it was great.
google avatar

Joe S.

Yelp
Greasy spoon perfection. Only gripe is that I was hoping for corned beef hash from the can - the good kind that's sort of like cat food. Instead this was more of an elevated version. Still good but not the classic variety that you might be looking for.

Joe S.

Yelp
Pancakes are tops! Friendly service Hash browns Good syrup Coffee is good Scrambled eggs are done right Friendly conversation Really enjoyed the place Never let's me down Love classic diners like this. Just be patient when you arrive at peak times. The place is small but that's what makes it special.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is the definition of the phrase "hole in the wall" but really good comfort food that's worth a visit! Definitely recommend you go during a work day and/or during a time no one is likely to be there because this place can only fit like 15 customers at a time. The space, the decor and atmosphere is probably the only drawback; you have to be in the mood for the old diner vibes I only had breakfast here so far, but I would love to try their burgers. I can definitely taste the home cooked style in the food and it's refreshing and delicious. The staff is pretty nice and service is quick and easy, and pricing is fair. You get a lot of food on your plate!

Yelp
On my visit to Minnesota from LA, I came across Our Kitchen, Wowwww! The hash browns are the best! I tried the cinnamon French toast with sausage and bacon the service was great and the vibes where amazing. Danny is the man.
google avatar

Katherine B.

Yelp
Best mug of hot cocoa in town! This is a great place for a single person, or a pair. A group of three may do ok. Be ready for a wait, or have a back up plan. Pick the counter if you can. And enjoy. That's really about it, bc Our Kitchen is kinda simple and doesn't need too much praise. They know they are awesome. *Of special note, the blueberries are cooked in the pancakes, not just served on top.*
google avatar

Nieman W.

Yelp
Staff top notch! Food top notch! Small place with a great vibe! Everything was great. The owner is a machine back there on the one griddle where everything thing is cooked to perfection. Everyone greats you when you come in and says bye when you leave! Will definitely come back if we are ever back in Minneapolis!

Yelp
I woke up to a snowy day in the neighborhood and decided to make the 15 minute walk to Our Kitchen for some much needed caffeine and chocolate chip pancakes. I'd been curious about this place for quite some time and had heard great things. Overall, I was generally satisfied. This diner is very quaint, with the classic twelve or so stools you come to expect from such joints. The staff were lovely and very quick with getting food out. They seemed to know many of the customers, which is always fun. As for the food, it was good but not amazing. The portions are large and the prices are reasonable. I got two chocolate chip pancakes, coffee, hashbrowns with cheese and bacon. The pancakes are made in house and the hashbrowns are supposedly world famous (I wouldn't go that far, but they're not bad). The bacon was thin and flavorful. All in all, not bad... but also not my favorite diner in the Twin Cities. P.S. I didn't see a bathroom, but I also didn't ask.

Yelp
Another Kitchen Special. Yum. Kitchen Special is two eggs, hash browns, toast or pancake, and coffee.
google avatar

Heather K.

Yelp
My daughter and I ate breakfast here on a Saturday morning. Be prepared to wait as you cannot reserve a spot ahead of time. I had a side hash browns with cheese and a mushroom and cheese omelet. My daughter opted for a steak with hash browns. We shared delicious blueberry pancakes. The hash browns, as advertised, were golden and crispy. Wait staff were efficient but not overly friendly, but made sure my coffee was full and we had what we needed.
google avatar

Sunshine M.

Yelp
Never in my life have I eaten a better pancake. Terrific food, service, location, vibe.
google avatar

Diana G.

Yelp
Nice old style diner counter. Menu is about what one expects, and that's fine. I stop in every now and then. Same wait person, same cook. The cook always seems tired and always seems happy, a tough combination! I like the hash browns a lot- crispy outside, flaky inside. Just fine. If you want a good basic no frills breakfast, this is the place.
google avatar

Jennifer K.

Yelp
Good simple small town sort of feeling diner. We showed up at 8:30 and it was easy to grab a place to sit for the 3 of us. The kiddos loved the pancakes and hashbrowns. It is perfect if you are looking for a "hole in the wall" comfort food. If you are looking for a modern inventive place then you will be disapointed.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
Thee best breakfast spot around, hands down! It's a little place, but the food tastes like it's homemade, but by a really good cook

Randy K.

Yelp
No frills restaurant with big portion, tasty breakfasts. Particularly delicious, crispy hash-browns. Service friendly and efficient. No atmosphere, but who cares. The food is great!
google avatar

Yelp
Neighborhood goodness in the middle of the city. This tiny little diner is a must stop in Minneapolis. The food is home cooked great, and it's a place you're going to want to see. Maybe seats 15 people, on a cozy bar seating either facing the grill or in the back row facing the windows. (They do expand to include outdoor seating in the warmer months) The menu is not huge, but it's got most every staple you need from breakfast, including homemade sausage patties (amazing), biscuits and gravy (also great), home-cut hash browns and gigantic pancakes. I ordered the Our Kitchen Special which included 2 Eggs, Hash browns, a Sausage Patty and toast. More than enough food for breakfast because the portions were plentiful. I think the meal cost about $15. The star of the breakfast was the Sausage Patty. It was super good, it was pretty big and was so flavorful. This is a must-have if you make your way to Our Kitchen! My son ordered the biscuits and gravy, I got to try a bite... and that may be my order next time! Service is friendly and intimate. You are literally right on top of the cook and waiter while you eat! It's also pretty amazing how much they can cook and put out with their two person show.

Yelp
By Far the Best Breakfast we've had in MINNEPOLIS, ALL the way from Florida Thank you Danny *One of The Original Owners, followed by his Abuelo*
google avatar

Miranda W.

Yelp
Kind of a long wait, but it's worthwhile. It's cute, cozy, and they're serving up high quality, good old-fashioned breakfast and lunch foods at a decent price. Love it! Must try!
google avatar

Nancy B.

Yelp
What a gem! This place is counter service with a few tables outside, not a ton of seats. The food is not pretty, but it is DELICIOUS! I got the egg and cheese sandwich on a English muffin with hash browns. If I can recommend anything, it's to get the hash browns! Must visit
google avatar

M T.

Yelp
Place is great once you get your order in. A bit slow, but it's a one man griddle and the hash browns worth the wait. But when they get behind, don't expect a greeting and it can easily take fifteen minutes to get a menu.
google avatar

Stacy S.

Yelp
This uber tiny place serves it up HUGE!!! You are missing out if you don't hit this place up. We were in town for a belated birthday weekend and decided to give this place a shot. You simply CAN'T be disappointed with this place! Staff was so fun and friendly, they even sang to us (to the radio, not happy birthday LOL) Portions are massive and the taste is just what you are looking for in a mom & pop kinda vibe. Get yourself to Our Kitchen!!

John M.

Yelp
I have been a loyal customer here for years. I prefer "to go", especially since the pandemic. I love their Breakfast Sandwiches. I buy one at least 15 times a year. I ALWAYS leave a 20% tip, even though I rarely have time to sit & eat. This past Father's Day I had a plan to order 3 breakfast sandwiches for my2 adult kids& I to have breakfast together:) to start the day. I called & a woman answered & said we are NOT TAKING ANY TO GO ORDERS TODAY, & hung up on me before I could say a word. I understand they were busy. I did not let it ruin my day, but I found an alternative. Today, I thought I would try again. I called, a woman answered and asked me to "hold". I was driving/working, not too far from the restaurant. I was not on "Hold" technically, because I could hear every word being spoken by her. 0nce, she said "how can I help you" so loud, to a customer at the counter, I thought she was talking to me! She was not:( I kept driving to OurKitchen & was psyched to get one of my favorite breakfast sandwiches:) The place was busy, but there was a stool available. I sat down, still had my phone connected to the store. She said hello, asked me if I wanted to order. I said yes, I would like to get a sandwich to go, and I have been on the phone with you for the last 8 minutes hoping you would pick up. She looked at her phone, said "no you are not" while she disconnected me.....as i showed her the live connection on my phone, she hung up her phone, then went to the counter down a few seats & starting talking with another group of customers, & ignored me. I waited for a couple minutes, & decided I needed to go elsewhere for food in the future. Just a heads up to the restaurants & businesses out there trying to survive &compete. When you treat customers who regularly visit your business, sing praises about your food & the breakfast sandwiches to everyone they know, tip well, & despite being disappointed in a big way the last time, try again to have an enjoyable experience, & RUDENESS is your response, I just cannot seem to convince myself I should go back again, or suggest anyone else does the same. Again, you don't earn my business by being rude, unprofessional, & lie. It will be quite some time before I go back there, if ever. I apparently am not the type of customer they want. The sandwiches are a 5, but the service recently has been disrespectful, rude, & unprofessional.

Jeremy S.

Yelp
I love love love Our Kitchen. Been coming here for years. They have some of the best tasting pancakes in town! Also their omelettes are excellent, custom fillings. Grits are amazing as well. Seating is limited so there may be a wait, however its definitely worth the wait.
google avatar

Lana T.

Yelp
OVERALL: Great hangover spot, but be prepared to wait. SERVICE: Our waitress was very attentive, always refilling our coffees and waters while needed, but it took 40 minutes to get our food. FOOD: the food is PERFECT for a hangover. Greasy and delicious. The pancake is the size of an entire plate, the homemade sausage patty was super flavorful- but the hash browns were the winner. It changed my life. Perfectly crispy with "burnt" bits it was perfect (but you do need to add your own salt) PRICE: the kitchen special was $11.50 and came with a cup of coffee. Upgrade your pancake for only .50c more! It's worth it. ATMOSPHERE: Very busy, small diner. Classic diner feel.
google avatar

Jerry V.

Yelp
Fun, funky, just perfect. Superb food! Tiny counter service. This is the MidWest version of our favorite: Tarks. Look it up in my reviews.

Rebecca C.

Yelp
I'd go here every day if I lived in Mnpls. A one counter, multi generational diner, it's a completely unique and special place. I sat and talked with the locals despite being shy. The eggs Benedict is amazing! The hollandaise sauce is lemony and fresh, a recipe the cook/Owner said hasn't changed in 25 years. I am making a plan to come here every time I'm in town.

Geormetra W.

Yelp
Horrible customer service The Waiter is very prejudiced and outta pocket me and my husband we literally sat at the bar and watch her greet and service customers as if we were not sitting at the bar waiting to be serviced she wiped everyone's area off except ours. She gave everyone water before us. There were two parties came after us. She service them before us. They even had hot tea while we sit with a nasty countertop, and no water very unacceptable. Definitely give you a -0 customer service is horrible. Straight foolishness
google avatar

Terri K.

Yelp
Excellent! Incredible service for ONE waitress!! Breakfast was delicious. I am a huge fan of sauage patties made from freshly ground sausage and these were sooo good!
google avatar

Will S.

Yelp
No stars don't eat here nasty no health and safety practices the cook never washed his hands or sanitized anything he took out slices of cheese and sat them on a dirty rag then put the cheese on an omelette. To make matters worse The cook went in the back got a "new" package of English muffins however the middle of the package was obviously chewed open there was a big hole!!! It was rat or mice had gotten into it but the cook just opened the end and pulled out a muffin and started grilling it like WHAT?!? Umm this was the most disgusting place I have ever been to period. P.S the waitress wasn't very nice either!
google avatar

James S.

Yelp
Best breakfast food I have had in a long time! My wife and I both loved it. Definitely check this place out. It's a small diner so you may have to wait but it is worth the wait! I will come back often.
google avatar

Marie C.

Yelp
I'm in love at first visit. It's definitely a love that will last. When I came here on a Sunday morning my friends and I were surprised to find this place was very accurately named "Our Kitchen" because you walk in and it's just a kitchen. And a countertop. And a couple of window side tables. We were able to get seated at the counter right away. One of the ladies behind the counter was so sweet. I was entranced by the cooking going on right in front of me - all done by the owner. She told me I was in the trance and she sees people with the trance all the time. It's just mesmerizing watching him handle all of the orders. He has such a system that it doesn't look like he's stressed at all or cooking for probably 50 people an hour, he's just cooking away! Just him! He was also very friendly and talked with us. The wait for food wasn't even too long at all and it was really cool being able to physically see them cook everything. No weird business here. For the food itself... ugh it was so delicious! I got a short stack of pancakes with sausage. The sausage is only one sausage patty but the amount of food overall was so filling and delicious! I can't wait to come back here and eat more delicious food.
google avatar

Maritza L.

Yelp
Customer service is great and food delicious Portions are very good, I'll suggest to update and have website to order pnline

Yelp
Our Kitchen reminds me of Al's Breakfast in Dinkytown. Very little seating but we only waited for about 30 minutes to get a spot. Service was prompt and the food was out quickly. We all got breakfast and it was outstanding. They have great choices, something for everyone. I got two eggs Sunny Side up, sausage, hash browns and a chocolate chip pancake. If you are in the uptown area you have to stop by!
google avatar

Karen B.

Yelp
First time here. This little place is amazing. If you want a BIG breakfast get up early and head on over. Those hash browns were really good and so was the bacon and sausage. The toast came buttered so no struggles trying to spread a pat of stone cold butter. Other folks were enjoying their steak and eggs and the pancakes were huge. It was great sitting at the counter and watching the chef do his magic on the grill top. They even have parking in the lot next door.

Joe L.

Yelp
Best diner in MPLS hands down. As a kid from a small town the ambiance is something that makes you feel like you're at home. News is on, the smell of pancakes, bacon and coffee fills the air, and the early crowd is either partaking in conversation with the staff or reading the paper. The food is something of comfort, you watch it get prepared all on the same griddle or the small number of pans that the chef has, it's like your uncle is making breakfast for your family at a get-together. You get to have at least 2-3 cups of coffee before it's ready but it's all worth it as you will not need to eat for the rest of the day (you might need another cup of coffee after you take your nap when you get home, but that's it). Overall I cannot recommend this place enough, people like to complain about how long the food takes but the leisurely midwestern in me enjoys how long satisfaction truly takes.

McKenzie S.

Yelp
This place is a treasure. I was out house hunting with my partner and we needed a quick bite to eat. We passed this place and I instantly knew we had to check it out. A classic greasy spoon with delicious diner food. I was tempted to get some breakfast food because I knew it would be out of this world, but a cheeseburger with fries was calling my name. I got the classic American meal: cheeseburger, fries and a coke. We grabbed a table outside. No fancy frills here folks. Just charm and good food. The food is super affordable and the burgers were delicious. Fries were great. We split a plate and it was enough for 2 people. Cokes were obviously refreshing. I need to go back and try their breakfast. I don't live super close to this area but will make the trip over just to eat at Our Kitchen again!

Nick B.

Yelp
Easily some of the best breakfast food I've ever had. What a place! Small, mom and pop diner vibes operating out of an old house. Food takes a little while to come out because the kitchen is still the original one griddle small kitchen. Food still came out in under 45 minutes. Get the Kitchen Special with a pancake with blueberries and chocolate chips with butter. Best pancake and hash browns I think I've ever had. Eggs were great too. It's a must stop for sure.

Yelp
Our kitchen? I wish it was my kitchen! I give this joint five stars for a for a few reasons: 1. Fun diner atmosphere. If you're into people watching like I am, you are in for a treat 2. Hard-working staff. Not all heroes wear capes people, some wear Our Kitchen aprons 3. GREAT FOOD. The signage outside, which claims "World Famous Hashbrowns" is entirely correct. I would pay large amounts to be able to take a nap on one of their pancakes. So delicious. Overall a great meal and experience, would recommend fueling up here if you have a big day ahead.
