12 Destination-Worthy Farmers Markets in Northern California | Eater

"This Sunday market brings together farmers and local businesses of all stripes, along with musicians and food trucks. The Artship here is a family favorite. Made from a renovated storage container, the colorful space acts as a library, an art studio, and a holiday celebration spot for visitors of all ages. Pick up veggies for cooking at home, but don’t leave without grabbing pan-fried bao from Xiao Xiao Buns, a slice of Brothers Pizza, or one of the other neighborhood favorites at the market, too." - Vox Creative

There’s a Big Dia de Los Muertos Party Going Down in the Outer Sunset — And Everyone’s Invited - Eater SF

"Nomar Ramirez, the owner and operator of Indigenous Mexican pop-up Molcaxitl, is working with the Outer Sunset Mercantile to throw a tremendous Dia de Los Muertos party at 37th and Ortega avenues. The free-to-attend event on November 1 will run from 6 to 9 p.m. and is a riff on the To Be Latino series Ramirez piloted with the farmers market in 2020." - Paolo Bicchieri

The Best Sourdough Bakeries in San Francisco | Eater SF

"Matthew Jay Jones was the longtime baker at Outerlands, a restaurant with outstanding sourdough. But with a lengthy closure during the pandemic, Jones struck out on his own, and now runs the wildly popular Avast Bakeshop at the Outer Sunset Farmers’ Market. His country loaf comes in two sizes, “large or smallish,” while other loaves feature emmer, einkorn, and rye." - Lauren Saria

Very nice farmers market. The fruits and vegetables were so colorful and bright. The food vendors were putting out great smells. Frankie West was the entertainment singing and playing her guitar. She had a very nice voice, videos attached. Just another gem in San Francisco that we found by chance.

Google
Wonderful outdoor market with plenty of FRESH goods. All of the fresh fruits and veggies that you can think of. There are nuts, fresh pasta and pasta sauces, wine, honey, flowers, and more! There are several different types of food trucks for an instant bite or sip. Today was an absolutely beautiful day for walking and shopping while listening to local artists' musical vibes filling the air. If you have children, there were many different nooks and activities to keep the kids busy while the parents shopped. I will definitely visit again the next time I'm in San Francisco on a Sunday.

Google
Spent the day here with family. It says no dogs, but there were many there we, which we don't mind because we brought our pigs. There was lots of amazing food to eat, stuff to buy, organic produce, and live music. There are definitely not enough places to sit and eat. That was one thing that was difficult for our group of five. Many of the people in the table stay there for a long time, just people watching, so they take up the eating space. I would. Say if you have a wagon to put some chairs in it and take them with you.

Google
They need to make their dog policy more clear. Was walking through with my dog who was leashed minding our own business when a worker approached us and told us to walk on the sidewalk. There was clearly other dogs at the market. She said that was OK because they were purchasing something. What kind of logic is that?! How do I know what I want to purchase unless I walk through.

Google
Huge farmer’s market with a wide variety of fruit, vegetables, meat, and sweets stands, and restaurants. Most vendors take both cash and card, but it’s always good to have cash on hand.

Google
Love this Family Friendly event! Love the young vendors! And the wealth of this cultural melting pot! Happy 30 Year Anniversary Viadia Thai Kitchen! And Vendor market Saturdays twice a month!

Google
Great farmers market. It does have a limited selection of produce but there are tons of local vendors selling a wide variety of things, food trucks, and live music.

Google
Honestly, it’s the only time I have to wear a mask, so I don’t have any. And they always give me a bad time about asking for one! Other than that , everybody’s great ! And I love to chat with the vendors!

Yelp
Great neighborhood farmers market near APG middle school and St. Ignatius! Perfect place to get breakfast or lunch on a Sunday and checkout some local vendors. It's on from 9am to 2pm and they have ton of food options, craft vendors, and some produce. There's also tables and seating around too, along with some port a potties. It's also a family friendly market with some activities for kids. I have a few favorite vendors that I like to visit. - Driftwood Bread co for their amazing sourdough - Sakura Soup Company has delicious and easy to use soup bases for noodle soup. I like their beef pho soup bases, tastes just like the pho in restaurants - Maillards has great smash burgers! They usually always have a line

Yelp
Well first of all not on 37 and sunset. A short drive north from 37 on sunset you will see the vendors parked. Street parking . Walked and was at the spot. Vendors are wide apart, nice selection of stone fruits . Vegetable selection was better than most, mushrooms were a highlight. Honey, fresh pasta and ready to take home bolognese lasagna. Delicious and tiramisu is a must buy. Further south the food trucks and singer. Bring a jacket because San Francisco weather is crazy

Yelp
Nice street market. Lots of street parking in nearby neighborhood. We went during Chinese New Year and they had some local group musical performances. Good mix of arts and crafts vendors and food vendors. Typical street food prices so not cheap if you looking to get a bargain. Vendors are nice. Not many fresh produce vendors tho. We would come more often but dogs are not allowed. There were a few dogs walking regardless. They will tell you dogs are not allowed if you walk by the Farmers Market booth.

Yelp
Left out a fav: Kunugi Noodles for Japanese street foods like Okonomiyaki, Omurice, udon noodles, sobayaki, gyoza, onigiri and more! Orders are prepped when ordered so there's a short wait.

Yelp
I love the chill weekends where you just hang out with no plans. Except the farmers market, ofc. The Outer Sunset Farmers Market is SO cute. Live music, food vendors, small businesses, a parking lot.... They got it! It is gorgeous on a sunny day and is a guarantee to boost serotonin levels. I specifically wanted to come to this market for Mahal Scent. I love their Filipino inspired candles! They burn well and make your whole house smell amazing. I was suggested to burn two different candles in different rooms to have a fusion of smells, which I never thought of but was convinced to do so. Brilliant! Boyf picked up different flowers to hand make a bouquet for me from Medrano's Flowers. Also picked up a shower eucalyptus. I'm spoiled. Solid way to spend your Sunday mornings!

Yelp
Review #800 Sunday Farmers' Market. This one is located at the Outer Sunset 37th Ave between Ortega and Quintata. Lively with arts, crafts and music. Besides veggies and usual farmers' market fare, they also have lots of food vendors. Delicious, entertaining and fun. Year round, every Sunday, from 9 am - 2 pm.

Yelp
Great farmers market with lots of local produce and food ready to eat. One of the stands had samples of their fruits and we walked away with giant apple pears and pluots. We did a mix and match berry combo at another stand and picked up various eats throughout the market. We were visiting on vacation and staying at an Airbnb nearby so this was walking distance. They had lots of interactive things for children and play areas. I really enjoyed the mahal scents candle stand !

Yelp
What? They have midnite bagel which was written up as top bagel in US. Too bad i had breakfast would have gotten their black sesame bread. There were at least 3 bread vendors. Quite a place to grab something to eat. They expanded to two long blocks, veggies and fruits, kids play are outdoor games and bubbles, and arts, and had a freebie.

Yelp
I had a great time checking out the Outer Sunset Farmers Market, there was a great mix of produce, fresh food, and mercantile merchants. During my visit it was nice to also sit for a moment and enjoy some music, plus there is a play space for the kids. As for parking a spot was found on the block North of the market, and with a cool light breeze it was very comfortable to wander about to check out the merchants.

Yelp
One of the most complete farmer's markets out there. Check all these off your list: - Live music - Plenty of food vendors w/ different options - Fresh produce from local & knowledgeable sources - A reading nook (what!)

Yelp
I love this farmers market!! Love all the food vendors and farmers with their fresh produce; I so appreciate them coming to my neighborhood instead of me having to trek all over town to get delicious things! My absolutely favorite place to get real food is Smokin' D's Texas Style BBQ. Their bbq brisket is so tender and delicious! The briskey sammich is always my go-to for an immediate lunch, but I like to get a hunk of the brisket to take home, too. The s'mac n cheese is rich and mouthwatering and complements the brisket perfectly. And don't forget to get some of the pickled onions and pickles to go along with everything; a hunk of jalapeno cornbread wouldn't hurt either!! If you're a rib lover, theirs is fantastic, too! For dessert, Baby & Boy has some fabulous baked goods. I had the mango & cashew blondie bar today and it totally satisfies the sweet tooth. There are so many things from which to choose, but they're very patient with those of us who are slow deciders!! You can always choose more than one item! The line for mochi donuts at the Vio booth was crazy long and their items looked yummy, but that'll have to wait for another weekend. I also stopped at the Ocean Malasada booth, but they were out of the flavors I wanted (it was close to noon already and they started selling at 9). The produce at the market looks fresh and there are organic items available. Many of the stands offer the same items, so you can usually get what you need without having to wait long. Great farmers market that runs two whole blocks. There's usually entertainment and lots of activities for kids. Wonderful outing for the family! The only reason why I knocked off one star is because I'm still leery of unmasked vendors and people around me; there were a good number of people who weren't wearing masks, even a couple of vendors. And there were a couple of vendors with incorrectly worn masks. FWIW, I might be the only one who's as cautious as I am, but Covid still frightens me!!

Yelp
I live in the Parkside. Until today I've driven by the Sunset Mercantile but never stopped as I'm on my way somewhere. Hubby & I were on our Sunday ebike ride and on the way back we decided to swing by. We walked our bikes through the 2 block stretch on 37 Av & Ortega. One block is dedicated to fresh produce and prepared foods. The other block is geared more to arts & crafts. We bought produce from a farmer and a loaf of bread from Driftwood Bread Co. I'd like to return and try the prepared food from one or more vendors. I heard the Sunset Mercantile is there on Wednesdays now too.

Yelp
This is a great farmers market in the Outer Sunset in San Francisco with a little bit of everything for anyone who enjoys a relaxing cool atmosphere. Plenty of food to eat in person or to go. There is a lot of farm to table offerings. An awesome in person experience.

Yelp
I live nearby and come here all the time. I like walking outside and feeling the wind and sun. There are lots different types of vendors. Flowers, fruits, accessories, books, groceries, and food. I really recommend people take a nice walk here on a beautiful Sunday morning. However, can we talk about the price though? Almost all the food is overpriced, $13 for a smoothies? $10 for 8 small pan-fried dumpling? I guess there is always a gap between support local and reasonability of the price. The pork ribs we got from the chicken food truck was not bad at all, and the price is much reasonable compared to others.

Yelp
Loved the atmosphere and specialty vendors. Handmade tortillas , organic almond butter, and more

Yelp
Well, it's been written up by the local papers mainly for their Outer Sunset Farmers' Market and Mercantile on Sundays. But I came on a Saturday... It was a typical overcast, cool afternoon with a slight wind. I'm familiar with this area and block since my alma mater is only a block away. Too early? I guess, but actually they hosted an event named the 1st Annual Fisherman's Life Street Fair on Saturday 7/10th. How did I know? A Taiwanese food vendor happened to put the word out that they would have a stand here which naturally rejuggled my Saturday afternoon schedule. Arriving around 2:30 pm after running a couple of errands, I drove here and found parking a half block away on 36th Avenue. When I walked over, I saw the Sunset Mercantile booth with a young gentleman manning the booth (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=bgnQgp1C0w9ex6tHl3xnrQ&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q). Directly across from him, I noticed Gumbo Social and would normally have been tempted to get something but I was on a mission. There was a Mexican fusion truck and then a BBQ stand which had a "sold out" sign prominently displayed. I then reached my destination and waited in line to place my order. More on this on another review. The stand told the waiting customers that they temporarily ran out of food but would have food ready in about ten to fifteen minutes, which gave me an opportunity to walk the rest of the fair. Walking towards Pacheco, I clearly learned the theme of this event by what the merchants were displaying and selling. It was very family friendly and everyone seemed in good spirits and good cheer. It is a natural fit being less than a mile from the Pacific Ocean. After all, if fishermen can't handle these conditions, well, they're just not fishermen then. I have been out of tough fishing wise for a while so I can certainly a newbie to what was here. When I reached the end of the block and fair, there was a prominent red truck with a panda on it with a decently long line... and this was about 3:30 pm in the afternoon. As I walked back to pick up my food, I noticed people sitting on logs along the west sidewalk of 37th Avenue either resting or eating as well as tables and chairs were the terrain would allow them to be firmly flat. I picked up my food and sauntered to my next errand. Warning: Do dress appropriately as, though it may be warm and comfortable in other parts of the City, it is usually cool and mostly windy here. It looked very well organized and the attendees were almost all smiles. This was a nice preview for my bookmarked visit to their weekly Sunday event to try the other neighborhood vendors. Looking forward to doing this before the end of the summer.

Yelp
It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of farmer's markets and the farmer's markets off-island (I'm from O'ahu, Hawai'i) are no exception. I find that they're a hub for food and local flair, so of course, I needed to find one in SF! While I was in the bay, I stayed in Daly City, and when I realized that the Sunset Farmer's Market and Mercantile was a 30-minute bus ride away, I knew that a stop here would be a priority. So on my first full day, the first thing I did was to start the day at the market. And as expected, I had a blast! I got to check out some of the vendors and got a good variety including: *horchata latte from Sunset Roasters *chicken sausage gumbo from Gumbo Social *rainier and sweet red cherries from ponce farms, LLC The other vendors included craft vendors, fresh produce vendors, and other food vendors. The booths were nicely spaced out for COVID. If I was driving around SF that day, I would've gotten some peonies for myself (sad face) but I didn't wanna lug a bouquet around as I explored the city. There was even a ballet performance by the SF Youth Ballet Company happening when I was there! It was the perfect form of entertainment to complement a great meal. Glad to say that this farmer's market lived up to my expectations! It's easy to get to via Muni and parking is available in the Sunset Neighborhood. Get here if you have a Sunday morning free!

Yelp
Love this farmers market! So much great food and friendly venders with unique items and art! Baby and Boy Pasteries is my favorite with delicious breads, empanadas, cookies and (my fav) Uber caker tots! Cosmic bird is a vegan alternative with new vegan chicken sandwiches and breakfast sandwiches almost every week! There is always a line at the Vio Pastery pop up, highly recommended spending your Sunday morning here with some live music!
google avatar

Juanita L.

Yelp
Such a fun little market! I love coming here on Sundays to get some food/sweets (e.g. gumbo, empanadas, breakfast burritos, malasada), some fresh produce, and tasty snacks for later (flavored roasted pistachios, pate).
google avatar

Colleen M.

Yelp
With or without COVID, the Sunset Mercantile is a family friendly treat with everything that you might want in one space on Sundays. You can shop for unique/local/artisanal jewelry, clothing, crystals, bread, donuts, pastries, seafood, honey, mushrooms, produce, coffee, ice cream, potted plants, fresh cut flowers, and more - and then on top of that there are booths to entertain kids if you've got them, and hot food for brunch/lunch, with a wide variety of vendors. There's a mix of yoga, hula hoops, and the works! There's expanded programming now during the weekday, though nothing close to the Sunday programming. Follow them on IG for the most up to date stuff :)

Yelp
Good neighborhood farmer's market. Some good food carts. Some good artisanal food vendors. It's all pretty expensive, but good quality. I picked up some fancy bread, pasta sauce, cheese, hummus, and bagels. There's kid's games, live music, and tables to sit at. Lots of dogs on leash. You have a nice view of the ocean. I'll be back.

Yelp
(no photos). What a wonderful open market with live music. Fresh air and sunshine does wonders and reflects my mood perfectly. I was brimming from ear-to-ear. What a gorgeous afternoon! Warm atmosphere. Stopped by for the following two hot vendors: Xiao Xiao Buns (marvelous scratch Asian baos and dumplings freshly prepared while you wait). Watch out for a mouth numbing dipping sauce with an unknown ingredient that may induce an allergic response to those who may have food sensitivities. Square Pie Guys (hearty Detroit-style pizza made with puffy thick Sicilian-style dough (reminiscent of focaccia), with crisp edges encrusted in caramelized cheese which then forms a delicious golden brown cheese barrier around the perimeter and a light ricotta cream sauce topped on chosen toppings. Airier textures. Cheesy, crispy with earthy mushrooms, fatty spicy sausages and glorious crunchy coveted corner pieces. Quite tasty but oily. Small portions and pricier as toppings are a la cart. Smooth creamy sauce with pronounced aromatics wafting from box. Best eaten in moderation. Delicious nonetheless with cringe-worthy calories. Can't wait to come back with more goodies in tow!

Bob J.

Yelp
Enough veggie stands to satisfy, some fruit, some misc stands (clothing, CBD oils, pottery, books), cheese, seaweed, granola, small bakery, and half a dozen cooked food stands. Stays open until 3pm Nice little band too. Dogs aren't allowed, as usual, but the market is right between a sidewalk and a tree-lined pathway that makes it possible to still shop with a dog by occasionally darting in.
google avatar

Emily F.

Yelp
Great farmers market. Clean, spacious, great vendors, and well organized. They have a nice variety of produce, crafts, and prepared food. I like the live music and many tables and seating areas. You don't feel rushed walking thru and makes me want to stick around longer. Lots of waste stations that I appreciated with all the delicious food to be had. We tried the dumplings and gumbo. Both were delicious and I'd love to come back again to try more vendors and look around.
google avatar

Mark P.

Yelp
It's a nice market for families in the area with lots of food trucks and craft vendors. The one drawback for me is that there is not enough organic produce.

Yelp
"How do you like the Sunset Mercantile Farmer's Market?" This is the question we asked to the different personalities in the Sunset. These were their response: -- "Oh yeah, I think it's great. Fantastic, really. We bring our two boys here on their wagon and just let them run loose here. Well, not really run loose, but they can play in that designated area there, those checkers and legos and, they love it, they love it. It's nice for them to get out a little, get a breath of fresh air under these trees. My husband and I get a little time to relax, too. We grab a cup of coffee from that roaster there, Sunset Roaster is it? We find a place to sit and relax. Oh yeah, there are enough places to sit. We just grab a sidewalk if all the chairs are taken. Yeah we just sit there, watch the kids, and listen to whatever live music they're playing. Great addition to the neighborhood, great addition." -- "I don't know, I don't know how I feel about this. I was excited when I first saw it, you know. I lived in this neighborhood my whole life and we rarely have anything cool and like, look at this, this is cool. But man what's up with these prices? When I first saw it driving on Sunset Boulevard with all these tents and booths I was like, that's cool, people can come and sell stuff and we can come shop and get a bite. Then I swing by and I saw this one Japanese stall selling a plate for twenty-four, twenty-six dollars? I'm not gonna lie I was offended for a bit. Like I thought the point of having these stands was so that the vendors no longer have to bare the cost of running brick & mortar, the sky-rocket San Francisco rent and all that. And I thought, maybe yo I was naive, but I thought that the cost savings will pass down to us. You know, the consumers, the people in this neighborhood. At these prices, man, who is this thing really for? You know what I'm saying? Who's all this really for?" -- "I really enjoy the fresh fruits here. I know Gus is just a few blocks away but I really want to support the local community. Here, I can see someone face to face and talk to them about what they have that day. It's always different. And I like, just like to talk to the person who is sourcing my fruits, and not like, just another employee. Yeah, I always leave with my tote full of goodies and an Acai bowl. That's my guilty pleasure after the 10 miles run this morning, heh." -- "Oh. I can answer your question, do you mind keeping your mask on? Okay what was it? This farmer's market? Yes I like it. It's convenient for us to get food or grab a quick bite. It's outdoors and all, which is supposed to be safe, but there's a lot of people here. And it's a lot of kids running around, I mean, I wish the parents, but I mean it is what it is. The other day I was sitting in that large table with my boyfriend there with our food, and a guy with his baby asked if he can share the table. I mean, I didn't want to be rude but I had to tell him no. I don't feel comfortable. He ended up sitting a few tables away and I saw him feeding his baby an empanada with his hands. I can just imagine the saliva and that getting everywhere. But it is what it is. It's convenient, and I guess it's outdoors, so we still come here from time to time." -- Thank you for tuning in. You can visit the Sunset Mercantile Farmer's Market on Wednesday evenings until 7pm and Sunday from 9am to 3pm.

Yelp
Fun on a beautiful or even not so beautiful day. Lots of fresh organic produce. Looks like it was just picked. Peaches, plums, cherries and strawberries were delicious. Roasted chicken, tandoori naan, vegetable samosas, stuffed spinach roti and cilantro chutney are items we would purchase again. Sushi grade fish looks wonderful and is reasonably priced.

Susan W.

Yelp
I went to the 37th and Ortega farmer's market today for the first time...it was a typical cold, cloudy, heavy drizzle Sunset day. But that didn't deter me from walking the 1+ mile to get there. I purchased a whole grain bread loaf from Driftwood Bread for $8 and a bouquet of sunflowers and protea for $10. I will definitely go back again - lots of vendors that sold food plus tables and chairs for resting. Support local businesses!
google avatar

Priscilla L.

Yelp
It has improved with more vendors here than when they first started last year. I like they are now about 3 blocks long from Ortega to Quintera on 37th Ave. Due to closed city streets 37th Ave makes a nice walk to ocean beach to see the waves and surfers surf. Come early to beat the crowds and get first dibs at the produce, pastries, drinks and hot foods. Be sure to hand sanitize on your way in. Something for everyone here to enjoy like clothing, plants, hand made items like pop up cards. Music playing in the middle. Last year I was surprised to see my favorite cheese vendor made the trek from Petaluma to sell their yummy cheese. This time I came across new vendor with unique donuts! I got the Salted Carmel churro which is on the lighter batter. It was tasty, but I enjoyed the heavier batter dough the Lemon! Love strong Lemon flavor. Feed me lemon and make me happy! LOL next time I would like to try the other unique flavors. Very creative I do use say! Keep up the good work!

Yelp
The food and beverage trucks are very good. The fresh fruit and flowers were wonderful. I love this venue. This was second time I have been and we picked up strawberries, apples, marigolds, jewelry and brushes and cleaning powder products from 1905 mercantile. I hope this continues to be a weekly event. It's so nice to get out and support the local vendors. It's ideal since it is never super crowded.

Yelp
Fantastic farmers market. Lots of vendors and a large variety out items. Great place to stop for lunch. Can't wait to come back regularly and make my way through the different vendors!

Yelp
Such a welcome addition to the neighborhood! Easy parking and great produce vendors. Nice wide "aisles" as they've closed off a couple of blocks - a welcome relief from the crush at the 9th Ave Farmer's Market. Even though there's one vendor at 9th Ave that I absolutely adore, I'm having a hard time going back there - this market is such a pleasant experience overall. In addition to produce, there are 2 vendors selling seafood, 2 selling flowers, granola, olive oil, house plants, soap...you name it. Llano Seco is there with their AMAZING pork and beef products too. So really, anything that you could want, including entertainment for kiddos.

Kam W.

Yelp
It's a nice way to spend an hour or so seeing the different foods and produce. You don't have to travel far to experience the diverse culture of the Bay Area with the yummy food available. You also get to see a nice selection of creative artisans as well as live music. So nice to see a mix of ages there including an area for kids to be kids.

Yelp
The Farmer's Market is great but I was asked 3 times by three different security guards if my dog was a service dog. Which the answer is yes! Once before entering, twice when I was walking around looking at stands and standing in line. By the third time not one but two security guards approached me it seemed excessive and I felt harassed because I could not enjoy the farmers market like everyone else. They need to hire a better more understanding security team who makes everyone feel welcome and treated fairly.

Yelp
visiting the Bay Area and had to try the Market. parking was acceptable as was the selection. got done good value and a few overpriced specialty items. not convinced all "organic" was as such but one has to believe. would return. thank you. often it feels like farmers markets begin to look the same. this one is set apart and makes it so unique and special is quality over quantity. It's a sort of small collection of spaces but the amazing goods available make up for its small size. The best kaffir style yogurt I've ever tasted is there.

Yelp
I love the location of this farmers market. Great small and local businesses with nice selection of goods- from jewelry to plants to different types of foods! We got strawberries, CBD oil, sprouts, and ate some delicious tamales and a loco moco. My daughter got some popping boba and we also grabbed some Filipino deserts. The weather is close to the coast so you get a nice breeze and lots of sunshine.

Yelp
I find that they're a hub for food and local flair, so of course, I needed to find one in SF!
