Supper Series: Bak Kut Teh Spots that Stay Open Past Midnight

"Quietly tucked away at the PSA Tanjong Pagar Complex is a well-known late-night supper spot. The unassuming stall is opened until 4am on most days dishing out robust bowls of pepper-laden bak kut teh. While some stalls dial the pepper in their soups back to cater to a wider range of customers, Ya Hua wears its spicy kick as a badge of honour. Order a bowl of the soup with some fried dough sticks and braised pork trotters for a real supper treat." - Alethea Tan

Previously visited once around 2019, and I don't think I knew how to appreciate the food here then. Didn't think much of it and didn't bother to eat the food again. Revisited recently after watching a YouTube video and I was quite impressed by the food. I love the peppery soup and the unlimited refills. The small bowl used also ensures that you get the maximum amount of hot soup each time round. The premium spare ribs were also great, and even though I chose the fatty version, there wasn't as much fat as I expected. Side dishes were decent as well, and my favourite was the salted vegetable. This is now highly recommended by me and I think it is really worth a visit.

Comfortable dining experience always. Service is welcoming and all the dishes we ordered were good. Spare rib was tender, ordered sliced pork loin soup for my 5YO she loved it so much, the meat was so tender. Giving this place 5 stars as the food felt healthy and less greasy even with the pig intestines. They also asked if sliced pork was for my girl and if I wanted non spicy very thoughtful of them! Would 100% recommend here especially for families with young children for their yummy non peppery soup. Thumbs up!

I stumbled upon this hidden gem of a shop by chance, and it has become my go-to spot in Singapore for a truly authentic Bak Kut Teh experience. The simplicity of the clear soup, flavored predominantly with garlic and pepper, sets this place apart from the more common Malaysian version with its brown soup. Despite its global fame, finding a spot that nails the essence of this dish locally has been a challenge. Yet, this spot that has been serving up this aromatic delight since before I was born has won me over completely. The flavors here are not just popular among locals but also hit the mark in terms of taste. It's a place that doesn't need fancy descriptions or elaborate marketing; the proof is in the first spoonful. I urge you to give it a try and see if you too are captivated by the top-notch deliciousness that this menu offers. This spot has become a staple for me during all my trips to Singapore, and I stand by my recommendation wholeheartedly.

Once seated, we were promptly served a bowl of crispy youtiao, chili, and wet wipes — a thoughtful start. I really appreciated the crunchiness of the youtiao, especially since many places tend to serve them soft and soggy. The bak kut teh here leans towards the pricier side compared to other spots. The vegetable dish stood out as the most expensive at $7, with a relatively modest portion. The soup itself was peppery and comforting, with unlimited refills — always a plus. I went with the spare rib soup, which came with 3 ribs. The meat portion was decent. Do note that all prices include the 9% GST.

Had a great time there. The food was great. The youtiao are nice and crispy. It was great even when you soak it into the soup. The soup was nice and peppery, doesn't feel oily and it comes piping hot. Price is slightly on the higher side but it is worth it compared to other BKT chains.

My father used to bring me here to have supper at night. Been a while since I visited and just went recently. The food is exactly as how I remembered. I always have the pork slice soup as this is the only place that makes it so tender and soft. The soup is exactly how I remembered it to be, peppery and savoury. Also ordered the braised intestines which was good, it didn’t have that “smelly smell”. Overall still my favourite place in terms of taste.

Google
Came by for a team lunch and this is aparently a really popular old-school bak kut teh joint among my older colleagues. Really bustling with the weekday office lunch crowd and we were lucky to find an empty table almost immediately, though the food took some time to arrive (~10min). Their rendition of BKT would be up your alley if your preference leaned towards the peppery side - this was one of the most peppery BKT I'd ever tried! The portion of bak kut was generous and I enjoyed the lean version moreso than the fattier (you have the option to top up a small price for the fattier meat). Overall, a satisfying bowl especially on a cold rainy day.

Finally had the chance to try this spot. While the location is not very convenient and the prices are on the higher side, the food was satisfying. The soup was delightfully peppery and came with unlimited refills. The you tiao was perfectly fried, maintaining its crispiness without turning soggy. The pork trotters were tender, flavorful, and not overly salty. Intestines were well cleaned and not overcooked.

Yelp
3-1/2 stars. The good: 1. Fast, clean service. 2. Free refills of delicious broth for the bakuteh. 3. Generous portions of tender boiled pork on the bone. 4. Good selection of tasty side dishes (braised peanuts, watercress soup, braised pork offal like liver, kidney, intestine, stomach). 5. $20/pp for a delicious, and pretty filling meal. I'll go again. For sure

Yelp
The soup was good, if over-peppered for my personal taste. The dishes were dirty (mine still had brown-colored liquid inside it). From the reviews I knew not to open the hand towels, but my friend ate a fried fritter before I could stop him. Since it was already eaten and we would have to pay for it anyway, I tried it...and it was stale and disgusting. I was very unhappy with being charged for something unpalatable that I didn't ask for. I like that they offered a free soup refill, though.

Yelp
I was recommended by a friend about Ah Hua Bah Kut Teh being one of the best in Singapore. But to be honest, this place is extremely hard to find for tourist like me! I literally spent one whole hour after I got off the subway with my friend before finally reaching the destination, and after getting wrongly directed by most of the shopping mall security guards I asked too! Okay enough complaints, it's located in a semi-open style market right next to/underneath a freeway overpass. However, the quality of food did not disappoint and eased my frustration of getting lost. -) Bak Ku Teh: It had a strong white pepper taste (which actually relieved my sickness too as I was having a cold) and the pork inside wasn't too dry at all. Some Bak Ku Teh's white pepper taste (spicy?) is too strong that it covers the original intended bak ku teh taste but Ah Hua's was made at a well-controlled level -) Seaweed soup: Another soup I recommended trying. A lot of seaweed ended up making this soup super refreshing. Tried other snacks/appetizers too, they were all pretty decent. I fell in love with bak ku teh after my visit to Singapore, and Ah Hua definitely tops my list on the white pepper based category.

Yelp
I have eaten here numerous times because its a family favourite so this is not my first time eating here so i am rather aware if the standards are the same! PRICE: AFFORDABLE The prices here are not cheap cheap but i think its worth it! For today's meal it was about $55-$60 for 4 people! DOUGH FRITTERS $2 MEE SUA $2 PORK SLICES $7 UNLIMITED SOUP REFILLS I am not so sure of the others that we ordered because i only eat these 3 dishes all the time HAHA but my family did order other dishes as seen in the photos! FOOD: GREAT Today's soup (ate at 10am) was slightly less flavorful as compared to the other times i came here maybe because it was still early but definitely still good, nice & hot. I always order their mee sua instead of rice because its always very nice & tasteful! The pork slices are always given in great proportions which is quite expected for $7 but it is on the saltier side so some might think its a little too salty even for me (&& i LOVE salty food) but its reallt nice and tender! The dough fritters are also good good BUT their dough fritters are NOT the crispy type so just a warning to those out there!! OVERALL: LOVE IT I'm always excited to eat here because i love Bak Kut Teh so its always a pleasanr experience to eat here & i always eat till my heart's content so if you want some good hearty soup with spice here is the place to go!

Yelp
I visited this place on a weekday lunch. It was packed with people and you can really see bones littered on the tables that people just left off with. We ordered happily as there were no price on the menu - fried fritters, rice, pig's trotter (lean meat), watercress soup and spare pork ribs soup (lean meat). I like that they have the option of lean and fat meat on their menu. Later on, the fried fritters came and I find its one of the worst fried fritters in bah kut teh stall that I came across. It was floury and there wasn't any kind of crisp to it at all. The rice came later and it was a little soggy for my liking. Two downs for me What I do like is its watecress soup, pig's trotters and pork ribs. Watercress soup gives a small bowl of generous watercress inside (can you notice the oxymoron?). $4 The pig's trotter is $7 for a small bowl of a few pieces of lean meat. It tastes good and the sauce works well with the meat. Spare ribs soup is a small bowl of only 3 small meagre ribs ($8). The bite-feel is real good, tastes great with the chilli + dark soya sauce, and the soup is peppery-delicious. I seriously expected more at the end of it. Maybe cause I was a guy and they gave me girls' portions for the spare ribs which left me like... is that all?? Furthermore I ordered other sides and still feel dissatisfied. This place has great tasting food but its a little expensive for bah kut teh and the place is quite warm, so it wasn't a very good experience. There are seriously better and more worthwhile bah kut teh in my opinion but if you are really pining for the soup on a warm summers' day, you can try...

Yelp
When I was a kid, I used to frequent Ah Hua BKT at Outram Park with my grandfather, who has been their loyal customer for decades. Ah Hua is the second (or is it third?) generation running the bak kut teh stall, and they are a close competitor to Ng Ah Sio BKT (at Rangoon road, before it was sold to Jumbo). When I grew up, I started frequenting Ah Hua BKT at Outram Park before/ after Zouk sessions. What better way to sober up than with hot peppery bkt soup and chinese tea? Definitely a way better choice than oily prata. When I grew even older, I would go to the Keppel branch, simply because it was near NUS. Service here is prompt, and the waiters come around to refill your soup ever so often. The menu is extensive, not just pork rib soup but also marinated items and a large selection of vegetables. The taste has definitely changed over the years though. At the risk of sounding pretentious, I'm going to say that the bkt here is good, but not as good as the old days. Still, it is worth the try if you're looking for authentic Singapore-style "peppery" bak kut teh. Definitely go for the ribs, and give the innards/ organs a try if you dare. My personal favorite is the kidney and liver, as well as the marinated intestines. The salted vegetable is also a must order for me to go with rice :)

Yelp
You got to love Singaporean's love for food -- and their passion and their willingness to talk about food :). I grabbed an Uber to Ya Hua. On the way, my driver started telling me the differences between the peppery BKT (Singaporean style) vs. the herbal kind (Malaysian kind), his favorite BKT places in Malaysia and Singapore, other BKT places to try in Singapore, etc. When we got to the food complex, he said the place didn't look open so he was going to wait. Not only did he wait, he actually got down to make sure I found the place. Verdict -- awesome. I ordered the spare rib and pork rib soup (#1 and #2). The broth was clean tasting and peppery -- just like I imagined it would be given Mark Wien's YouTube video on the same -- https://youtu.be/xjYqUZ96HYs. As in the video, the servers came around to top up your broth (if you need it). I am a fan although my driver did order me to try out other venues in Singapore :)

Yelp
BKT was pretty good and the pork was soft and flavorful. We got here after the lunch rush so the whole area surrounding this place looked desolate but rest assured we got our BKT. They tried to make me pay for the wet towels and fried fritters we didn't order so minus one star.

Yelp
One of the most popular places to go in the central area for Rou Gu Cha (better known as soup cooked from a blend of chinese tea herbs and pork ribs). It's a short walk away from PSA, which means many staff there often need to battle heaty digestive systems for sure! The soup is definitely not as thick as some, but all the better since it means we can down more in a seating without feeling too sick of the taste. It's also heavily seasoned with pepper, making it a tad spicier than some other soups, so do drink lots of water if you can't deal with the peppery overload. My favourite accompanying dish is the Stuffed Pig Intestines, which sounds disturbing, but is actually a yummy dish from my childhood. It's called Zhu Chang Fen, and has a powdery and paste-y texture after biting into the chewy intestines. It's open till late, so it's a perfect spot for supper with colleagues and la kopi into the wee hours!

Yelp
Out of 4 famous bah kut teh places that I have been to, this is actually my favorite one. When you look at the menu, you'll be surprised to find there are two options - fat or less fat. This is the only place that I know who has this choice. In addition, this place is great for people who can't take spicy soup - you can ask for "non spicy" which has no pepper at all. My favorite is the sliced pork in soup, where the soup is the same base, but has additional ingredients which makes it more tasty. I'd like to give this place a vote. 2015/11

Yelp
There are two Outram Park Ya Hua bak ku teh places, one nearby Zouk and one on Keppel. This is the one on Keppel, and the best out of the two, IMO. The soup is consistently peppery and flavorful unlike that other one by Zouk. For those who don't eat pork, they have fish soup! It's cooked in the same broth so it's equally delicious. But that does kind of defeat the purpose, huh? If you do decide to go for the pork, order the ribs; def. worth the extra few bucks! You're immediately served fried fritters so send them back if you don't eat fried food. Oh! They also charge for wet napkins, but dry napkins are unlimited and free. I usually come and drink about 3-5 bowls of that unlimited, delicious soup...def. getting my money worth!

Yelp
One of the best bak ku teh I've ever tried. Straightforward. Though I don't know why I would subject myself to the noon heat slurping the hot soup in a non- air conditioned hawker center, it was worth the trip.

Yelp
I've been eating here for ten years. The consistency is really good, but the prices have really crept up! $8 for a bowl of spare ribs is definitely on the high side, but with the central location and easy parking it's hard to complain! Besides the pork ribs and braised trotters, I also order the seaweed soup and braised peanuts. Remember to top up the soup!
google avatar

Chris D.

Yelp
Good quality soup but a bit overpriced! Dont know since when the price has increased so much but it costed us around 15-20$/pax for a reasonable amount of basic soup + additional dishes.
google avatar

Dan L.

Yelp
Much prefer the sibling branch at Havelock Road. Its air conditioned and much more old skool chaotic. Also the soup seems less peppery there. That said, I like that they are super efficient here and the accompanying side dishes are very nice.

Yelp
Highlights: * The broth/soup is very peppery, which may not be everyone's favorite, but is definitely a plus in my book. * Easy-on-the-Wallet Just went there last night and I have to say it's one of my favorite bak kut teh spots because it has the best broth that I've ever had. It's got a peppery kick, full of delicious flavor, (I'm salivating even as I write this review). If the pork itself was a bit more tender, I'd give it a 5-star review instantly, but I found the meat a little bit on the tougher side. My personal preference is meat that's almost melting off the bone already, both soft and soaked in flavor, and this place only delivers on the latter. However, the deliciousness of the soup is so good as to make the other issue almost forgettable. They also refill your soup for free as many times as you need, (at least 3 times, which is what they did for me), so you will undoubtedly walk away very warm and satisfied.

Yelp
Personally, this place serves very good Bak Kut Teh! It doesn't get top score is because it's not air conditioned and eating piping hot food in SUNNY Singapore is not fancy at all! The other reason for no top score is because the bill can be a little too steep for daily makan fare. Back to the food. I love their sliced pork loin meat. I know it's meant to be Bak Kut but they make their pork loin really soft and tasty! And another fav of mine is the fish slice. Again I know it's madness to order fish at a BKT place but it's nice lah! My dad loves this place and all the Bak Kut stuff so it's not just silly me with the pork slice and fish slice ok? Oh I also love how the soup is endless top-up goodness!! Do come and check it out for yourself.

Yelp
We ordered 2 bowls of pork ribs and 1 bowl of pork legs and you tiao. The soup is delicious and tasty and you get unlimited top-up. The Pork with its fats tasted chewy and nice. However the youtiao wasn't crispy and lacked the taste with the soup. Tastes better youtiao elsewhere. There's no prices on the ordering menu and the server had no idea how much those items cost as well. In the end, the bill came up to $24 which is expensive compared to what you get elsewhere at this type of ambience. Food is great but not the price.

Yelp
One of the best Bak Kut Teh in Singapore (Pork Chop Soup), highly recommended if you like this type of food for breakfast,

Yelp
This bak ku teh store is within stone throw from my place and whenever we are craving for some soupy supper, this would be the place to be. A nice warm pepper soup for the night especially on rainy or chilly day. The soup here is not too peppery. Usually, the dishes we would order would be the braised pork trotter, bak ku teh, kidney soup and the salted vegetable. The food is pretty good and I love to wash my meal down with a cup of luo han longan drink.
