The Best Ice Cream in Massachusetts | Eater Boston

"Open since 1931 (originally called Gulf Hill Ice Cream), Oxford Creamery serves ice cream, burgers, chowder, fish and chips, and more. (The extensive ice cream selection also includes six flavors of dairy-free, vegan-friendly ice cream from Boston-based FoMu.) It’s open seasonally, April to October, and also operates a food truck dubbed “the Oxcart,” which serves lobster rolls, hot dogs, and more. The current owners have been in charge since 2003, barely changing anything from the previous ownership, aside from adding sweet potato fries. Sample flavors: death by chocolate, green monster, strawberry cheesecake, butter pecan, moose tracks" - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Google
We used the walk-up window to order ice cream and sat at the outdoor picnic tables. Luckily, it was Friday afternoon, so no lines even though there seemed to be a steady stream of customers. The ice cream was delicious!!

Google
Had high hopes for the food but will only be back for the ice cream. Ice cream was great, got Reese’s peanut butter cup. The big chunks of peanut butter cups were so good! And you get a huge portion of the ice cream. Food didn’t really have any flavor. Got the clam balls and chowder. Only tasted breading in the balls.

Google
Our family has been coming here for years because the food is amazing, especially the lobster rolls and ice cream. It’s a huge highlight of our annual summer vacation, punctuated by multiple visits. Can’t get enough!!

Lisa

Google
Very expensive. Service was very slow. Dining area was quite dirty, tables and floors. The process of ordering and picking up food is nightmarish. My grandsons hot dogs were burnt and all our fries were cold. I waited 10 minutes to place my order while one girl was wiping a counter and another was carrying on a lifelong conversation while the 6 people in line waited. Not happy here today.

Shawn

Google
We used them for a party of over 80 people The set up fee is shameful, since they arrived 15 mins prior and attempted to serve over 80 people with long long lines. Everybody kept saying wow what an expensive fiasco. I would recommend them for groups around 35, anything larger requires more than the 2 hours. They didnt start serving until 20 mins after the 2 hours started. But rest assured they shit down on time. Also they dont rake the trash and have minimal amounts of drinks available that were chilled or somewhat cool

Google
Everything on their menu is delicious and affordable. We come up here as often as we can when we’re back on the east coast. The fish sandwich is a favorite of ours, and fries are always fresh. You won’t be disappointed!

Google
Can't go wrong at Oxford Creamery! Because of the limited days opened, I nearly didn't get to go on my trip. The lobster rolls are always amazing, as is the ice cream.

Google
We've been going here since I was a kid. They are the seasonal summer treat we look forward to. Their prices are reasonable + ice cream servings are generous!

Yelp
Come for the tasty seafood; stay for the ice cream! My guests and I loved our dishes! I got to sample a bit of everyone's dishes. I really loved the fried scallops and the fried clam!! My salmon burger was a tad dry but I loved the dill sauce and the fresh ingredients. It's also cheaper than most things in the menu. I think it's perfect for a light lunch! The ice cream was super creamy! Yum! The portions are huge so I would honestly just get the kiddy size next time.

Yelp
My girlfriend grew up coming here so she really hyped this up. I was very pleased with Oxford Creamery. It is a nice little shack with delicious food at affordable prices. Everyone that works here is so nice. I loved the lobster roll and grilled cheese. Their ice cream is delicious. It's a little small inside with like 5 tables but seems like a lot of people get it to go. This place has been in business for a long time and I can see why - it's awesome.

Lorraine K.

Yelp
I grew up in Mattapoisett so it pains me to leave a bad review for an establishment that has been around for so long, but we stopped for dinner at Oxford Creamery last night. The service was extremely slow, but it's summer in a coastal town so I'm not going to complain about that. What I will complain about is the food. I got a lobster roll and onion rings for a $2 up charge ($26). My husband got a scallop roll with fries ($20.50) and my son got a grilled cheese with bacon. The lobster roll was a big disappointment. Clearly frozen lobster, soggy and spots that were still frozen. The scallop roll- the scallops were soggy and greasy. The grilled cheese and bacon was good. We waited about an hour for the food, so overall a real bummer that it was not good at all. When my name was called and I went up for the food the girl behind the counter said "we ran out of onion rings" and she handed me a dollar. Well it was a $2 up charge for the onion rings, but thanks anyway!

Yelp
Pro tip - it's not hard to season your burgers with salt and pepper. The burgers are just plain beef patties.
google avatar

Tanya M.

Yelp
Always a local favorite for fish and chips. Lots of ice cream flavors Available. Lots of other foods available. I recommend calling ahead.. very busy in summer months. Unfortunately only open seasonal. Reasonable pricing.

Yelp
The food here is on the higher end of burgers and fries. The lobster roll and the other seafood options on the menu add a whole new aspect to this restaurant that really drags a whole new group of seafood lovers to come and eat. The owners and staff are extremely friendly making this a highly recommended stop.

Martha M.

Yelp
staff is always friendly and they serve fresh local seafood. Ice cream is high quality from a Massachusetts family sourced dairy. Local institution loved by area folks & visitors alike. Only downside they are open seasonally.

Kara P.

Yelp
This Place is absolutely filthy. It looks like no one is paying attention to the condition of both the dining area and kitchen.

S F.

Yelp
Seasonal takeout. Good clam cakes, fried clams, lobster rolls and more. Ice cream is awesome too. Check before you get in the car; they are seasonal and also are not always open at the beginning of the week.

Robert G.

Yelp
Excellent food, service is always prompt and you can't beat eating outside on Cape Cod.
google avatar

Chad S.

Yelp
I love going to Oxford Creamery! My fiancée and I got a cheeseburger and a grilled cheese and both enjoyed our meals! Then we got ice cream and frozen yogurt and they were both delicious! If you are in the area - definitely make time for Oxford Creamery!!!
google avatar

Lawrence M.

Yelp
A very good roadside ice cream and snack bar type restaurant. Located for me on the back road to Cape Cod. A small building with adequate parking and a few outdoor picnic tables. The food is excellent the fish sandwich and chowder among the best around. I find the hot dogs are also great. They serve a wide variety of food including lobster rolls, scallops etc One hidden gem are the grilled cheese. The ice cream is above average but not great. The help consists of teenagers and service especially when crowded can be up and down. Only fault is the place is crowded inside when ordering and then pick up. Well worth a visit.
google avatar

Tim O.

Yelp
Liz and her family/crew offer very friendly service! Best ice cream and lobster rolls around! The chowder and cheeseburgers are really good too.
google avatar

Tina S.

Yelp
First time here. Food was okay, we had fish and chips, cheeseburger, fries, and two frappes. We've had better but we've also had worse! Great location, lots of parking, and you can eat outside.

Sandy R.

Yelp
The best in the business!! Now that is a delightful and delicious lobster roll at a great price and the ginger ice cream is perfection
google avatar

Carla T.

Yelp
Holy hell. This place is so good we had it 4 nights while on our vacation! It's a locally owned mom and pop seafood joint that has the best prices, and clam Chowder ever. It's a thinner broth, while still creamy it's super thin but I LOVED IT! Got the clam strip dinner every night and it was perfect. Crispy and flavorful and fresh. The coleslaw is really good! The clam cakes got better each night. Fried to perfection and a perfect side to a cup of chowder. The dinners are great to share because the portions are really big. We would get one, a cup or bowl of chowder depending on how hungry we were and a small order of clam cakes and have food left over! Mostly bc we got a hand packed pint of ice cream to go too! Their pineapple orange and peanut butter Oreo flavors were DELICIOUS! Great spot, friendly and efficient service. Super reliable!
google avatar

Nassira F.

Yelp
The fish in chips were the best thing ever. It was so tasty! I love it here. I feel like the hours should be longer but I love this place to death!

Yelp
Really dissapointed that they no longer sport the overhead menus that were so easy to read. Now your told to pick up a small menu on the counter and pretty much all senior citizens cannot read the small print! Ordered crowder, same lukewarm unflavored, almost no clams. In years past they would raise the price of lobster rolls, and make them smaller and 2 years ago started using a cheaper frozen blend of lobster meat while selling for just under 16 dollars. Pray tell this year they raised the small lobster roll to $22.50 i believe! They claimed prices were up 30% i don't believe them. But this year i won't be buying their tiny rolls to see if portions got even smaller. I was often critical of their poor quality fish and chips....the fish, thick batter and greasy fish. I complained several times and told them what they needed to do to correct itI 'm happy to report it does seem like they corrected it. Ordered in June and was pretty good. They even changed their fries which were horrid, now much better.....finally

Maria L.

Yelp
We have been coming here for fish and chips. It is always very good. But their phone manners need to be corrected. They pick up the phone tell u to hold and then take over 15 minutes to get back to you to get your order. Sometimes i have arrived at the restaurant and they have yet to take my order. Improvements in this area of business is needed. Would give 5 stars if phone experience was better

Peggy C.

Yelp
I wish Oxford would stay open all year. Best ice cream, burgers and lobster rolls. It's the place to go on the South Coast.

J G.

Yelp
Great ice cream, great fish and chips! There's an area with a bunch of picnic tables on the other side of the parking lot.
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
Tried the lobster roll and the fried whole clams for lunch. The lobster was fresh and came in nice big chunks. I liked the fact that there was very little of anything else (mayo and other fillers I've seen in some places). Fried clams were cooked nicely and were tender and fresh. It came with some tartar sauce which was decent. Although there wasn't a lot of lobster meat in the roll, it came with a decent amount of fries and cole slaw and cost only $15 so it was worth it. Because the restaurant has limited seating, we had to eat on the picnic bench outside, which is very uncomfortable on a 90 degree day. We enjoyed it nevertheless. Overall, the service was very good and price to portion ratio was reasonable. I would definitely go back when I'm in the mood for a simple lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
Love the food. This was my first job. My fave is the chowder fish and chips and fried clams.
google avatar

Jabe Z.

Yelp
Love this place. A staple of my childhood and still great. Lobster roll and clam roll were both delicious, and at a good price. Grab a seat at the picnic tables under the trees.
google avatar

Pat B.

Yelp
I love this place. Although I'm so stuck on the salmon burger I never order anything else. Today - April 11, is opening day for 2019. I stopped in just to make sure my favorite ice cream was just as delicious as previous years. Yup - it passed the test. Saturday we will come for dinner- just to check the salmon burger is still yummy. Customers are encouraged to bring their own spoons. This year they have water in a can instead of plastic. And straws are by request only. Thanks Oxford Creamery, you make Mother Earth proud.
google avatar

Amy C.

Yelp
Would be 3.5 stars if I could. If you are looking for old fashioned kitsch this is it. Tiny restaurant serving all of the basics at a reasonable price. Lunch for four? 20 bucks. Fantastic garden salad with grilled chicken. Passable chicken sandwich and grilled cheese. Picnic tables in the field across the parking lot great for families. Really hot inside and slightly chaotic but worth it just for the experience.

Sean D.

Yelp
Always great the owners are the hardest workers and always aim to please best ice cream in town
google avatar

Katie L.

Yelp
Best sorbet around. I come here every single time I visit from So cal. My favorite place for a frozen treat ever. Worth it. Look no further.
google avatar

Louise B.

Yelp
Best chowda! Best lobster roll! Best ice cream! Great fried clams and clam cakes. Hamburger is okay.
google avatar

Caroline E.

Yelp
A Mattapoisett staple for decades that never disappoints. Best fish & chips on Buzzards bay.
google avatar

Cori F.

Yelp
This place never disappoints. I've been going for years whether for ice cream or a whole meal. I highly recommend the lobster rolls. They're overflowing with lobster and the rolls are grilled with butter. It comes with French fries but I usually substitute with onion rings. The onions rings are fabulous. The fries are also good. The fried seafood look amazing. I've had the popcorn shrimp and it was good without being too greasy. It's a small place but there's lots of seating outside. It's also a popular take out place. People are picking up the orders they called in almost constantly. I would highly recommend going here!
google avatar

Kevin O.

Yelp
I'm so upset they were closed I was looking so forward to having there clam chowder. And lobster roll.
google avatar

Richard P.

Yelp
Awesome. The best ice cream I have had in years. Rich and creamy without being too sweet. Prices are VERY reasonable too! Fast friendly service. Will be returning to sample the lunch items that others were raving about.
google avatar

Walter B.

Yelp
We were here when we went to MA for a family event. It was soooooo good, we went three times for the lobster rolls. Yum!

Yelp
I was in town location scouting for a new tv show and while driving down 6 East came across this fantastic ice cream place with picnic tables outside under the trees. Small little place inside with the line out the door. I did not come for the Lobster roll came to try the burgers. The cheeseburger was overcooked and a little dry and they charged me an extra fee for lettuce tomatoes and onions which should come standard with all burgers. I also ordered a regular milkshake and found out they do not put any ice cream in their milkshake it is just milk and flavored syrup in order to get ice cream you have to get the milk frappe for an extra $3.00 but luckily because I am allergic to the chocolate syrup they gave me the frappe for no upcharge. The fries were just okay but my pup seemed to like them. Their ice cream is not homemade nor made in-house, they buy their ice cream from Richardson's - Their pints and quarts are one dollar cheaper than most places and the young lady who filled my pint was able to put 4 different flavors in it and topped it off with extra scoops of chocolate. Richardson's definitely has the best chocolate ice cream I have ever tasted. Overall great customer service, I believe the owner does all the cooking and some great stuff the ice cream was by far the highlight of Oxford's creamery. They do close on Columbus day for the season so go get yours before they are gone.

Juan M.

Yelp
Love there Lobster Roll. Their Ice Cream is great too. Have gone here a couple of times - once when I was just driving by and another cuz I had to go back there (a 45 minute drive). Don't let the looks of a small ice cream stand fool you.
google avatar

Tyler S.

Yelp
Not bad got a cheeseburger here and some clam cakes and clam roll everything was decent didn't get ice cream everything was decent size very pricy though
google avatar

Rachel K.

Yelp
We thought the food would be good because it's a local joint that's been around for a very long time. Looks like the place is only really good for ice cream. We ordered fish only ($9.50) and a cup of chowder ($3.50). The fried fish was decent but the chowder was super watery and too salty. Most if not all the workers appear to be students (college maybe). The cashiers were okay but it seemed like they were a disorganized lot in general. I saw at least two customers' orders delayed or messed up due to miscommunication and/or disorganization. We had to wait a very long time for our food to come out. The inside was very hot and stuffy and just an uncomfortable environment to wait in. The price was okay which was one reason why we went in the first place. However, I would suggest paying a little more and going to Turks instead- it's just a little bit down the road from this place and looks much classier. To conclude, it was a very unsatisfying experience.
google avatar

KC M.

Yelp
If you want a decent lobster roll and fries, this is your place no questions asked. It is quintessential New England summer. However for having the word "creamery" in their name you'd think the ice cream would be tasty and fresh; it is neither. It is surprisingly tasteless and not at all creamy. So get dessert elsewhere.
google avatar

Brandon M.

Yelp
Oxford has been a summer family tradition for the last 19 years. Their the first dinner we have and the last pint of ice cream before we head back to California. Not to mention both my little broths have spent summers working here. They have the best fish n chips in town.
google avatar

Betsy W.

Yelp
Not your run of the mill, clam/ice cream shack. This place takes care with how they treat their food and customers. Everything made fresh and you can tell. The lobster roll here is excellent. It's fresh, very well priced at $12 and delicious. The bun was lightly toasted with butter on the skillet as it should be. They serve the lobster cold, with only just enough mayo to keep it together....not too sloppy. This meal comes with fries and cole slaw. If I left with one impression of this place - everything is made fresh and they know how to treat seafood with respect when frying it. Everything was very minimally battered and not overly fried or oily. It left the seafood (clams and french fries) hot, toasty and crisp - everything fried food ought to be. In general the food here is all an excellent value and the service is very attentive and polite. Now for the sweet stuff - the ice cream like the rest of the food is fresh and you can notice the difference. Flavors include the usual suspects plus a few extras to keep you intrigued... moosetracks, to blackberry, to salted caramel, mint chocolate chip, coffee etc. They do it all well, and it's fairly priced so it's worth a double scoop. The atmosphere inside is your typical clam shack interior. Nothing fancy. Checkered linoleum floors, plastic chairs, ketchup on the table etc. As with any clam shack type place, the food is the deciding factor and Oxford Creamery is certainly worth your time if you're in the Marion/on the way to the cape area.
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
One of the most disorganized places I've ever been too. They have an order window but nothing telling you what they have. No list of flavors. For ice cream. Dirty place over all. Person who scooped ice cream had all kinds of ice cream up to her elbows.
google avatar

Chone S.

Yelp
So I am not sure why this place gets rave reviews. Maybe I am too picky when it comes to seafood. If I am going to pay $15 for clams and fries i would hope the fries are fresh not frozen from a bag. The clams were okay but they def had more bits of just bread coating and minimal clams. The ice cream is just from Richardson's so if i wanted ice cream from Richardson's id just drive there.
google avatar

Tsada K.

Yelp
Remember when you were a kid and so happy to be alive and holding an ice cream cone in your hand, that you didn't even care that you were sporting swimsuit cameltoe in public, not to mention housing a castle's worth of sand in your snatch? I do. As a kid, I loved coming here after a trip to the beach, either for a delicious scoop of grapenut custard ice cream or a refreshing raspberry lime rickey. Recently, I came back for lunch as an adult, and not much had changed. The prices are still cheap, the rickey was tart and refreshing, and the sweet, succulent lobster roll brought me to tears. Or maybe that was the sand in my snatch. Either way, the lobster roll was still really fucking good.
google avatar

Konstance K.

Yelp
Filth Alert...but just close your eyes and eat! Good food, decent prices, but...... FILTHY DIRTY both behind the counter, on the tables, floors, and even outside. Customers eat their food amidst overflowing garbage cans, which sit next to the order counter. We asked them to wipe off our sticky table so we could sit down, and the pimply kid at the cash register took a paper napkin and pretended to whisk the food remnants and spilled vinegar off the table. Oh yeah, the dirty looks were free! The cooks, cashiers, and ice cream scoopers are always a new batch of smart-ass townie high school grads cutting their teeth on a first job. This means they talk way too much, screw around w/ each other way too much, ignore customers, and forget to keep their hair up and their hands clean. No wonder they don't want to keep the restaurant clean. We ended up taking our food and eating in the car -- no small feat with fried clams. Why oh why do we end up going back each summer? Portions are good, food is hot, and I think I've even seen the guy from the health department grab a grilled cheese ($2.00) before taking out his inspection check list.
google avatar

Luke W.

Yelp
From the outside, The Oxford Creamery looks just like any of the other small, summer ice cream/fish places that litter The Cape. Don't just drive by this one. The only thing I've ordered here is the fish & chips, but it's without a doubt, the best fish & chips I've ever had. By a landslide. The first time I had it was 3 years ago, and my girlfriend and I go back every summer for our "Oxford Creamery Pilgrimage" and it's been consistently delicious every time. I compare every fish & chips I eat to this place, and it has never been beaten. I've never had anything else on the menu. Not even the ice cream actually... I should probably save room for some next summer... Bottom line: Go here. Get the Fish & Chips.
google avatar

Jen A.

Yelp
Each visit to the Cape must include a stop at Oxford Creamery for the lobster rolls. Simply put: best deal for the best taste. Some may argue that it's a modest serving of lobster (there are literally hundreds of other places on the Cape to get a lobster roll) BUT, the lobster here is consistently fresh, not overwhelmed with mayonnaise, and the toasted bun, fresh. To give some history: my aunt, a tried and true Cape Codder, would only get rolls from here (if she weren't making them at home in her kitchen!) Cons: this place is caught between a rock and a hard place. I wouldn't mind if they stayed old school, but while I was enjoying my roll this summer, we literally watched a worker take down a black and white picture of the creamery from its earliest days, and replace it with a sign advertising their new gluten-free or dairy-free ice cream. That simple act was like a metaphor for what is sadly, happening to a lot of local eateries on the Cape. (See review for Persys Place). No matter, I'll still come back and back, and back..
google avatar

Sabrina P.

Yelp
I seriously don't know how this place has such high reviews. While I do appreciate the small local business, I'm definitely not a fan of Oxford. The ice cream is super overpriced and the service is always sub par. Again, I think it's great they hire local kids, but when the kids give you an attitude, the service is slow and a lot of the time can't take an order properly it can be frustrating. I don't know if it's just my luck but there always seemed to be a problem with our order whenever we went there. It was a huge reason we just gave up. We went there tonight because they're open til 10 and again, another messed up order.... The fact that we live less than a 2 minute drive from Oxford and choose to drive 15 minutes to go down the street to Kool Kone is proof enough.
google avatar

Liz M.

Yelp
Just had my fix of fish & chips and a coffee freeze (yes, a frappe with soda water... best thing ever) at Oxford Creamery this weekend... there is no place that can do it like Oxford! It's a little slice of heaven in the Southcoast and a summertime favorite whenever I am visiting my parents. Their fish & chips will fill you up with a generous portion of fish and a thick new england batter and don't worry you will get plenty of french fries and a delicious side of cole slaw too!! I'm actually getting hungry writing this review and planning my next trip home now. :)
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
Here I go, reviewing yet another best kept secret that is now sure to be set-upon by rampaging hordes dead-set on plunder. This place has ice cream. This place has damn good ice cream. In fact, this ice cream already draws rampaging hordes so I'm not really giving that much away, however.... What I really like about this place is that it also serves up some really good clam-shack cuisine and I'm a person who devotes a lot of time seeking out the best clam shacks I can find. They've got a great lobster roll, clam roll and scallops(those are the usual things I get). I bet their chowder is good too but I haven't tried it. If the summer-time fried seafood thing followed by some really good ice cream is your thing, then you could do a whole lot worse than Oxford Creamery.
