A Dozen Places to Eat Rabbit in New Orleans - Eater New Orleans

"This Northshore charmer located in the boutique Southern Hotel is certainly worth the drive for anything on the menu and the paired-down, upscale ambiance. Plus, there are two bunny dishes on the menu. On the small plates side, there’s a ragú of Mississippi rabbit with a goat cheese polenta cake, pickled peppers, and braising jus. On the big plate side, there’s a fried, stuffed rabbit with tasso, mozz, sweet potato hash, and Creole mustard vinaigrette for $33. The rabbit dishes are limited to the dinner menu, but there are a few Easter brunch (sans rabbit) reservations left." - Stephanie Carter

Oh man oh man oh man oh man. This place was top notch. I really mean it. The food was beyond outstanding. Everything was skillfully prepared and I was very impressed with everything I dined on. I loved every bite and cleaned more than one plate. I tell you hwat this was some damn good food and I would come here before they're gone as they are closing this location'ss doors in September.

Google
Amazing food, great atmosphere, and friendly staff. I enjoy sitting at the chef's counter, which allows me to interact with the chef's and watch them at work. They all really care about the dishes they send out! The wait staff are all very friendly! They know the menu inside and out, and can make very knowledgeable suggestions! The bartender is also really great! The special cocktails are all amazing! And I saw it's a skill that on any given day you can go in and your drink always tastes the same! I can't say enough good things about this place! Enjoy it every time I go!

Google
Amazing lamb shank. Also If you like your bartenders knowledgeable and intense, Paul is it. Overall enjoyable solo experience: attention to detail and no-fuss service, elegant yet casual ambience, and it's all about the food.

Amazing food and cocktails. We loved the lobster ravioli and bone marrow. Great spot for a fancy date night. Highly recommend!

Google
Oxlot 9 is such a cute and beautiful restaurant. From the tile work to the dimmed lit chandeliers, such an Instagram worthy place. I was so excited to visit Oxlot 9 because I had heard the best things about the Campfire dessert. The dessert was a magical surprise, the presentation and the flavors were all beyond my expectations. I made sure to pair the campfire with a cup of coffee and it was also delicious. That type of coffee is the one you wished you had every morning. My group and I were lucky to sit by the bar because the bartender was preparing cute cocktails and garnishing them with so much detail and care. I will definitely be going back to Oxlot 9 and trying their dinner dishes and desserts.

Google
We had a wonderful experience here. It is hard to find better tasting food than what they prepare. It is a smaller venue so reservations are recommended. For the guys, I also recommend wearing a coat. The picture is of the stuffed rabbit. It was delicious.

Google
Seared scallops with rainbow chard and pumpkin seeds, beer battered fish and chips, ceviche with pear and fried plantains, basil and peach sorbet, all was delicious and visually stimulating. Comfortable, upscale ambiance with beautiful wood tables and chairs, gold accents, big windows, white tile floor. Very attentive service and reasonable prices. Thank you!

Google
Delicious menu and warm atmosphere! Met with some friends for dinner and I wanted to stick to apps since I had eaten prior to arriving. They had plenty of snack options and a nice selection of wines. A warning for those who need lighting to read, they really dim the lights at night. Love this place for a nice treat to splurge!

Yelp
My wife and I came here for our 1 year wedding anniversary on NYE, and it was the perfect choice. The staff was personable, the service was quick and efficient, and the food was truly incredible. I recommend the Gnocchi appetizer and the red snapper entree.

Yelp
My wife and I had an excellent anniversary dinner tonight at The Gloriette in the Southern Hotel in Covington. Lovely understated southern charm and relaxed upscale ambiance, and fine service, with excellent food and cocktails. I had the salmon and my mate had a shrimp pasta dish. Both were excellent as were my Caesar and her beet salads. We shared a dark chocolate torte with cappuccino gelato for dessert. It was all quite enjoyable. The Gloriette is highly recommended and is perhaps the top of the dining mark in Covington.

Yelp
Everything was fantastic: food, service, and such a cute garden room. My husband and I celebrated our 5th anniversary here recently, the mussel and fries were amazing (our favorite dish).

Yelp
I was staying at the Southern Hotel and had breakfast here at The Gloriette. I ordered the smoked salmon avocado toast....,AMAZING!!
google avatar

Tammy N.

Yelp
Food and service was great. The restaurant had a french tea party vibe with the decor which was surprising but fun.

Yelp
The Gloriette was such a special dining experience for our anniversary. Chef Alex Harrell has made some changes to the menu which did not disappoint. Great service, beautiful ambiance, and delicious food! I think the duck leg confit is the best version of the dish I've had. I'm still drooling at the thought of this dinner weeks later!

Yelp
I came here for my birthday and it was unbelievable. Honestly, when I looked at the menu, I wasn't super excited, but oh my - I was proven wrong! We split a Caesar salad, with the most amazing croutons, then I got the Flounder and my husband got the Moules Frites. He said the could have drank the tomato-y butter sauce, and the frites were divine. The sauce on the Flounder was equally spectacular and the potatoes and the tiny brioche croutons so flavorful and went perfectly with the fish. The fish itself was perfect. And then there was the atmosphere, which was why we chose to come here. The service was excellent - i just can't say enough about this beautiful place!

Yelp
LOVE THIS PLACE!! The atmosphere and decor is gorgeous! The service and food is impeccable!! Truly a gem in downtown Covington!

Yelp
Smoked old fashion was fantastic and their cocktails are so refreshing! Everything was delicious and the service was on point! We're suckers for ambiance, and this place is gorgeous and my favorite part was the local singer Ashley Orlando! Her singing was so special that was my favorite touch can't wait to come back.

Yelp
Fabulous food, however, the service was highly disappointing. We had been sat but wasn't greeted by our server Nate until about 15 minutes in, in which he introduced himself and offered to bring out water. Lemons were requested with the water, however they weren't brought out with the water. Actually had to ask 2 different times afterwards, which was about 10 minutes or so and finally got them. Then another server came about 15-20 minutes later and asked if he could take our food order, however, we had not even been offered to place a drink order, which we made him aware we had been sitting/waiting. He apologized and took drink orders. I will say drinks were great. I, myself, ordered a glass of Rose' and it was very tasty. Everyone else in the party seemed to be pleased with their drinks, with the expectation of 1 who never got their drink at any point through the meal even after making it known. We were really wanting to get more drinks but felt it was best to not even try to order a 2nd round. Hell, we were never asked how the drinks were or if we wanted to order any additional drinks. Miss out on sales Meanwhile our server could be seen constantly running back and forth frantically as if he was beyond overwhelmed with the 3-4 small tables he had. He then finally came to take our food order and then we of course waited and got food in a timely manner. The food was great and very tasty. I ordered the crab cake and I must say the chef did so well. Everyone in regards to their meals were highly pleased, however the only damper in regards to the food service was someone in the party had to request a condiment(ketchup) at least 4 different times before they got it(took about 15 minutes). Nate, himself never returned after food was delivered, however, he did come to check and asked how it was going pretty much when everyone was done eating, so it made no sense to us. Thank goodness were were a easy party and didn't require much. I got a chance to taste the brie cheese grits and I was so impressed! Overall, the food experience itself was amazing. When it came time to request the checks/bills, that was horrific. Nate split checks up pretty much correctly except for like 3 people and he had to re-do/fix theirs at least 3 times before we could pay and depart. Our party of ladies were very easy going and only ordered 1 round of drinks and food with no requests other than lemon for water and ketchup, however, the service was beyond flawed. We hope to return sooner than later and give the restaurant another try, of course with a more skilled server, that way we can suggest/recommend this restaurant because of its great food it does have to offer!

Sydel W.

Yelp
Pricey for dinner Good food not great for price but the service was great Location is the plus for this restaurant We went to the bar in the hotel while we waited on our table. The bar staff completely ignored us, however we were kind and asked for a drink and finally after about 15 minutes the bar keep (not a professional bartender finally gave us a drink. Hotel nicely renovated so the ambiance is new and trendy.

Yelp
A little on the pricier side, but you get your moneys worth because the portions are great. I had leftovers to bring home even. The cutest little place with beautiful art on the walls. Our server was the sweetest thing, and everything was delicious.

Yelp
The Gloriette is like a jardin enchanté. My mother and I love this place, it is simply Divine. The ambience is like stepping into another world. The cuisine is impeccable, the chef is truly gifted. In the evening, you can see from the windows the large ornamental star lights hanging from the trees outside, it's just magical. There aren't many places that offer a truly enchanting experience. Thank you to Destin, Madison, & Coraline for superb service.

Yelp
Went here for lunch and I haven't stopped recommending it since! Every dish we had was amazing, the decor was gorgeous & our server was on top of everything. Not a single complaint. Makes you feel like you're in a different city entirely

Yelp
Not OxLot... appetizers, entree, and desert... forgot what I even had. Food was good but not memorable. Service - 4.5 Stars Food Taste - 3.0 Culinary creativity - 1.0 Stars Food Presentation - 5.0 Stars Ambiance - 4.5 Stars Would I go again? Hmmm maybe I'll drive to Bay St. Louis. You will love this restaurant if you like French cooking and want nice ambiance.

MJ G.

Yelp
I have mixed feelings. We went to the Gloriette for my husband's birthday. When I made reservation, there was a question asking if we were celebrating a special occasion. I commented that it was my husband's birthday. No one referred to his birthday when we arrived. The server was also not aware of his birthday. After finishing our meal, I asked the server if they do anything special for birthdays. The server said they could put a candle on our dessert if we ordered one. We didn't order a dessert. A scoop of ice cream is very inexpensive for the restaurant to make a lasting impression. Why ask what we are celebrating if u don't acknowledge it in any way? A candle on a dessert for which you paid!!! Is this an upscale restaurant ... NOT!!!

Yelp
We join them for Christmas brunch and all of our dishes were delicious. Such a cute atmosphere, great prices.

Yelp
Perfect ambiance for a girls night! We tried most appetizers and all were amazing. Oysters and tagliatelle were the favorites! Cocktails were so creative and really made for an amazing evening. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Fav new place for date night. We are so happy to have a local upscale restaurant that actually delivers! The food was delicious and on point. Atmosphere lovely. Were able to cater to my husbands gluten allergy. (3 gluten free dessert options on the menu is a big deal) . Our entrees were perfect and delicious. Apple dessert is next level. And to top it all off the special touches all around tie everything together. Service was great. We will def be regulars here. Cant wait to try the brunch!

Yelp
Exceptional and beautiful restaurant with phenomenal cuisine and great service. Highly recommend!

Yelp
First time customer, beautiful decor and friendly staff. However because of the tiled floor and open areas it is extremely loud. Add lots of mimosas and Bloody Mary's, you get the picture Felt like I was on the Jersey shore , lots of loud tennis Moms Food is good, but for the price the ambience killed my desire to return.

Katie D.

Yelp
Highly recommend! The restaurant is beautiful with a simple elegance. Our server Nathan was fantastic, and other servers we observed and interacted with were great with their tables as well -- all were attentive, kind, and friendly. The food was EXCELLENT. Everything we had was just perfect -- presentation, temperature, and most importantly, taste. From the cocktails to the salad (roasted beet!) to the entree (salmon!) to dessert. We can't wait to go back!

Yelp
We love the Southern Hotel and The Gloriette adds a perfect complement. The menu is creative and will make you want to return and sample more of their specialties. Service was excellent, especially for a small town restaurant.?

Yelp
As other have stated, the space is very nice but the noise level is a bit much. The dining room was very empty when we were there so the noise level in the room itself was not so bad. But the noise from the lounge down the hall was very loud. As for the food, I will give it a meh. It was ok but certainly not worth the price. Cocktails were ok. Appetizers were good including Camenbert and the gumbo. The oyster stew was very flavorful however it contained a mere 2 oysters. Entrees were ok overall. Salmon dish was well received, Halibut was pretty good, but the flounder was meh. While the flounder itself was nicely done, the butter was very overwhelming. The croutons mixed on top with the crabmeat did not not anything to the dish except a bit of a crunch. The croutons were not very eye pleasing and seemed to be there to give the illusion of more crabmeat. And this dish was extremely salty. Desserts were all underwhelming. Chocolate tart was just ok, apple galette was disappointing and not very fresh tasting. Service was friendly but a little disjointed. We will not be back anytime soon. On a wednesday night, they served 5 tables. Meanwhile, the restaurant across the street was packed.

Yelp
So we are big foodies in this area, I was eager to try and have the Gloriette in downtown Covington. However, compared to all the fine dining restaurants in Mandeville/Covington. This is my least favorite, which I'm so disappointed about. I feel like when you are spending money on fine dining it should be included to have a little lagniappe, maybe hot fresh bread served while waiting on food. That was disappointing as all the other restaurants either have a chefs tasting or bread. I had one of the fish entrees when I went and I found it bland and not worth it. Overall, not a big fan. I've heard it has a great brunch, but dinner does not feel up to par.

Yelp
The food was great and the staff is very friendly!! The dining room is also very beautiful. The biscuits taste just like my Granny used to make them!

Claudia P.

Yelp
The burger was amazing, and the eggs Benedict was perfect, thank you so much julia, i love coming here!!

Keith R.

Yelp
We have gone three times to this restaurant. Last night will be the last. We kept going as we liked the ambience and felt we just needed to order better. The food last night was average at best. Pork cheeks had little flavor. My son didn't finish the filet as it was overpowered by too much blue cheese. The gnocchi was bland. My hamburger and fries(figured I could t go wrong with that) was served at room temperature. Took 20 minutes to get first drink and that was after we flagged down the host. The waiter was nice enough but seemed completely overwhelmed. Never once checked back with us without being flagged down - even to order our food. Simple requests - more water, ketchup for fries, etc took 10+ minutes to get. We were a party of eight and while I understand a gratuity automatically added to larger groups, they added 22% which I feel is presumptuous to add more than 20%. I let it go but they certainly didn't earn a tip in excess of 20%. I never mind paying for a good meal and acceptable service but this restaurant isn't providing either. There are plenty of better restaurants in Covington/Mandeville to patronize.

Yelp
This place is such a hidden gem, I can't wait to bring all my friends and family here. I've dined at the Gloriette for dinner a few times before, but this past Sunday was my first brunch experience there. I will say that if you're interested in going there for brunch, you will definitely need a reservation. It was very busy, more so than the nights I'd had dinner there, but we were able to be seated because we had a reservation. There was one little hitch - even though we had a reservation, we ended up having to wait an extra 20 minutes because all the tables were still full. The wait didn't bother us much, as the hostess was incredibly sweet in ensuring we had a wonderful experience all around. Our server, Nate, gave us excellent service. He was attentive but still allowed us the time to enjoy the company of the rest of our party. He was not pushy and easily picked up that we were wanting to hang out for a little while and enjoy cocktails after our meal. There was a large table of young folks seated next to us that seemed to be giving him a hard time, which kept him very busy for a period of time, but we had full drinks and didn't mind because we've all worked in the service industry before and know how demanding & impatient some customers can be at times. The food was absolutely outstanding, I've never had a bad dish here before. The crab cake is my personal favorite, and my husband really enjoyed his omelette. I can't wait to come back again!

Blevins H.

Yelp
Once again The Gloriette doesn't disappoint! Great food and fantastic staff in a beautiful setting. If you had visited before and found it a bit loud, they have remedied that issue nicely.
google avatar

Deborah S.

Yelp
I'd give it zero stars if I could. So disappointing. Service was horrible. Drinks took 30 minutes to be served, waiter was inattentive, food was bland and not impressive, plates sat in front of us for 30 minutes and I had to get up and ask a waitstaff to clear our plates and bring us a dessert menu. What a waste of a beautiful interior. My prediction is the restaurant won't make it and will be out of business in six months. Ox Lot is missed.

G D.

Yelp
Great upgrade for the Southern Hotel, creative dishes and awesome cocktail menu. Well worth the trip to downtown Covington.
google avatar

Cynthia K.

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant! Great food. Service needs a little improvement. They need to enforce a dress code.

Yelp
The food here is absolutely amazing. We were huge fans of ox lot 9, so we went in with a very high standard that needed to be met. Victoria and the staff here completely surpassed all of our expectations. My husband had the trout, and I had the flounder. It was so delicious that I forgot to take photos. The flavors were impeccable. The wine list is impressive, and the old fashions are stout. We will most definitely be back. Thank you for an amazing dining experience and for helping to turn around what had been a difficult day right up until we had dinner at your establishment.

Erin C.

Yelp
Overall 4.8. Reasons for not a 5.0, was loud this night and took some time to get food and alcoholic beverages out, but that could be intentional to allow for a more intimate experience. Food was lick the plate good. Fried Oysters for apps, each person got their own and thank goodness bc no one wanted to share. The batter was not heavy and the oil used was fresh, no greasy as well. Main dish was ribeye/tuna/flounder. Ribeye was juicy even with it being charbroiled, the tuna was cooked at medium per request and it wasn't dry! Flounder was the best dish, the mini croutons just soaked up the butter sauce. Dessert was crème brûlée & strawberry mimosa, The caramelized sugar on the creme brûlée hit every inch of the topping. Not one part went without being caramelized. The pink lady cocktail was not too sugary no too strong Expresso martini was strong but it was delicious. Very good and I walked out feeling I paid for what I wanted, amazing food!

Cheryl E.

Yelp
Very disappointing meal for the price. Ordered the special of the night, the pompano, dry and bland taste. Minimal sauce ( asked the server for more) to help dryness and overall taste. Other diners had duck confit which was also dry and not seasoned. Will not visit again, overpriced and blah food. Ambience is nice though.

Jeff O.

Yelp
Holy cow! We're not noise-averse people, but this place is so loud it hurts. No way to have intimate conversation as everyone in the place practically yells just to be heard. We asked the waitress if it's always that loud and she said it is. Yikes! That's the biggest issue here, and it's a big one. The food was decently tasty, but nothing special. A bigger issue was the portions: while not small, they were almost all filler. For example: we ordered the crab gumbo appetizer and it was about a cup to a cup and a half of roux with maybe a tablespoon of crab and another tablespoon of potato salad sitting in the roux. The other 4 appetizers/small plates we tried were more of the same. We had enough and went across the street for dessert.

Jared P.

Yelp
We have been looking forward to the opening of this restaurant for while. It didn't disappoint especially for this being the 3rd day they were open. Looking forward to having many dinners there.

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
What an incredible dinner my husband and I had at this gem of a restaurant! I wonder why it took us this long to discover it. Upon entering, we were immediately seated. Our server, Destin was very knowledgeable about the entire menu, and made a few recommendations. Her service did not disappoint. My first course was the Blue crab gumbo, followed by their perfectly seasoned Caesar salad, which was one of the best I've had. I absolutely loved my entree of Halibut, topped with crabmeat. My husband raved about his flounder dish, which was completely covered in fresh, lump crabmeat. We have already told our family & friends of this remarkable restaurant. We will certainly be returning for more of their fabulous dinners.

Saundra B.

Yelp
The food was just OK. I had the Rainbow Trout. Could not see or taste the Trout being overwhelmed by almonds. The oyster stew was tasty but the oysters were very chewy. My husband had the Cioppino and said it was very good. He also enjoyed the oyster appetizer. There was no Napa white wine on the wine list. I had a $28.00 glass of mediocre French wine. The price was not the issue, it was the fact that is was just ok. Will try it again if they decide to put a good Napa Chardonnay on their wine menu.

Peyton H.

Yelp
It's new so cut them a little slack, but the drinks for brunch were terrible and took forever. The food was okay, not bad, but not great. Definitely nothing close to Oxlot. The sticky bun was amazing and the gumbo was tasty except for the potato salad instead of rice that was in it.

Elaine D.

Yelp
Nice food, very pretty interior. Loud. Impossible to enjoy the meal with the deafening roar of noise.

Lorna D.

Yelp
I had brunch there with a friend. Our waiter was attentive but a very tattooed young lady dropped our check on our table in the middle of the dessert course. That was poor. We were both under-impressed with our dessert selection, the dark chocolate tart had a tough crust and we got the impression it had been refrigerated too long. Overall, our experience was less than impressive. Decor lovely but food better at Oxlot 9 when it was there.

Michael H.

Yelp
It's only getting two stars because the aesthetic. Ever been to the Superdome during a playoff game? That's about how deafening It was when we dined on a Friday night. Very awkward to walk in the door that's on the street and not a soul in sight to greet you. Everyone just stares at you awkwardly. After being seated by a hostess who said not one word we waited 30 mins to get greeted and receive water. Not only that but man oh man was our server not in a good mood and it was felt. Her back-server should have been in her position. We only ordered apps after waiting so long to be greeted. Wasn't about to drop 300+ on dinner and be even more disappointed.
