The 17 Best Restaurants in Columbia, Home of the University of Missouri | Eater

"You might spot Ozark Mountain’s food truck somewhere on campus or at the farmers market. Wherever you find it, order the Boss Hog, an open-faced pulled pork biscuit sandwich, or go for a simple plate of biscuits and gravy. The operation also has a permanent location on Hinkson Avenue with a more extensive menu; standouts during a sit-down meal include the fried chicken dinner, fried catfish, and Papaw’s Pancakes. Many of the ingredients are sourced from local farms too." - Chloe Konrad

We ordered some food to-go to enjoy next door, and while the food itself was mostly great, the service left something to be desired. The smash burger was excellent, and the creamy mac n cheese was rich and flavorful. The buffalo wings were a nice size and perfectly sauced, and the biscuit breakfast sandwich was also solid. However, the home fries were under-seasoned and fell a bit flat. One downside worth noting: they charge extra for ranch, even when ordering buffalo wings—which feels a bit off for a place serving wings.

Google
This is a hard one, but overall I would say it's a nice place with 95% of the food being fantastic, but that bad 5% is a bit of a doozy. I had a spell of about 2 years where I every biscuit (several) I got from their truck was rock hard or dry. Infact, I was able to spike one into the parking lot at the farmers market and it remained intact after bouncing 10 feet up off the pavement. That said, everything but their biscuits have consistently been top quality and what I would consider among the best in Columbia. All of this is crazy considering they call them selves a biscuit company, and made it very difficult for me to write a review. Today, I finally got a good biscuit and feel like I can finally give them a fair review. The biscuit bar is well decorated and clean and it was very nice to sit on the patio. The server was very polite, but he and the kitchen were both extremely slow despite it not being too busy (30+ mins for our food to come out ). The fruit waffles and mocha coffee were fantastic, and the biscuit in the biscuits and gravy were pretty good. The prices are pretty high, and the portions aren't the biggest, but for the most part the quality (besides sometimes the biscuits) is always worth it. I hope they have figured out their biscuit game, and think if they can remain consistent with them they could easily be considered one of the best restaurants in Columbia.

Google
The biscuits here are superb! They also make fresh blackberry jam and pimento cheese spread! Yum! Can't go wrong with the coffee bar and the cocktails are great too! Many breakfast and lunch options. Will definitely have to go back to try more food options!

Google
The atmosphere is nice. The food was so overpriced and the food wasn't even great. Biscuits were dry and they couldn't get overmedium eggs right after 2 tries. First ones looked more scrambled, 2nd batch had yolks bit looked like 1 and a half eggs and messy. $17 PLUS $5 for a small gravy. . Also if you want jam that's a upcharge. .i don't recommend. The grits were good and only good part of meal. Sausage was lukewarm I am editing. I dont know how to respond to the owner so will add my thoughts here in reguards to what the owner stated. okay great local and fresh is great. I should have received perfect eggs since it's supposed to be a culinary experience. instead when it was addressed it didn't matter that I had sloppy, thrown eggs on my plate. Believe me, you're restaurant is overpriced. it shouldn't take a expert to make a decent egg. Any other restaurant would have had gravy included for that price! I don't know what temperature you expect food to be, or what you're preference is but I doubt lukewarm would be exceptable again for a culinary experience. As a paying customer me not being 100% happy didnt matter but now it does? that's not how it should work.

Google
The food is amazing. The Rainbow Biscuits appetizer with strawberry, blackberry, and apple jams was novel and a great start to a wonderful meal. Great selection of drinks, both draft and cocktails. Main courses were generous and very well prepared. The fried chicken was crispy and flavorful. I also had the bread pudding for dessert and the bourbon sauce was perfect. Go ahead and add the scoop of vanilla ice cream...you've earned it

Google
Wonderful place to eat! The food was amazing. Everything is made from scratch. They had the best fried green tomatoes I have ever had. Staff were all kind and helped us pick what to order.

Google
Great early fall patio dinner. Food was really good. Perfect sized portions to satisfy but not be stuffed. Fun little outdoor night lights on the table added a bit of ambiance. We were not in a rush that night but we still waited a bit on food, on the bill.

Google
Tried the country friend steak for the first time today, yum. As always waffles, biscuits, and OJ are some of the best. My bf's dad said the blackberry jelly was the best he's ever had in his 60+ years. Update! We finally went here for dinner, after only going for breakfast the last two years. Sooo good!

Yelp
Our server Maggie was AMAZING!! Truly took her time connecting with us, offering suggestions, and chatting. 5 stars just for her. Great lemonade and cocktails. Pimento cheese was great. I didn't love Jettie's biscuit, I thought it was too molasses heavy, but if that's your thing then it may be perfect. Could have used a little more dressing on the caesar. Friend loved the ranch salad.

Mattie D.

Yelp
Solid spot and love the decor inside. It's very cute and feels like a locally loved place. The food was tasty! My four stars is due to the biscuits- I thought since the biscuit is the big star it would be the best. Sadly it wasn't the best I've had nor something I would be tempted by without their delicious fried chicken or yummy butters and jams over top. Fried green tomatoes however do receive a five star! Overall service was efficient and friendly and I ate every bite of my food.

Yelp
I love Ozark Mountain for brunch! The staff is always friendly and has good recommendations. There is usually a wait, but it's not too long. I've also enjoyed sitting at the bar too!
google avatar

Jim W.

Yelp
You will wait, this is a popular spot in an up and coming area (thanks to Logboat Brewing). Biscuits are great, gravy has a decidedly different taste from most sausage gravy I've had (garlic?--) could not eat the gravy, but the house made sausage is excellent. Favorite was the buttermilk pecan waffles with a fried chicken breast. The waffles are a unique and creative choice on this menu. The bar, and their very creative drinks, create a whole 'nother world here. Highly recommended (except for that gravy)

Deandra W.

Yelp
The food and latte were great. The wait was looooong, but it was a busy time of day. I appreciate the gluten free offerings on the menu.
google avatar

Danielle C.

Yelp
Great food, nice people, cool style and vibe. The special jams made the everything delicious
google avatar

Heather B.

Yelp
Overall a great place to get lunch. There were great, fresh options to appease biscuit lovers and those that don't. Only small issue was that the custard in the banana cream crème brûlée was not setup before torching the top, so it was a little more watery.

Yelp
Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day so I could leave CoMo without fueling up with this essential way to start the day. I'm glad I ran across this spot on Yelp as it did not disappoint. We decided to sit on the patio and we each started our meal with an iced coffee. After our drink selection is when we ran into trouble. Our problem was not being able to decided what to get out of all the delicious sounding options. After a few check ins from our waiter we finally ordered before we changed our minds again. I got the biscuit egg sandwich and split a side of the wavy gravy fries with mushroom gravy. My friend landed on the chicken fried chicken biscuit sandwich with mushroom gravy. Everything was so delicious, the service was top notch and the location was great. I'm so glad Ozarks completed the start to my day with an amazing breakfast.
google avatar

Kaitlyn M.

Yelp
Good breakfast! The orange juice is no joke and worth it. The pancakes are enough to feed two people. Cheese grits are legit and super tasty! There can be a bit of a wait on Sunday's but it's worth the wait!
google avatar

Harold K.

Yelp
It was better when they just drove that truck around. Trying to portray themselves as an upscale restaurant, The staff act like they are from the early 90s and work at Tower records. There's no reason for the ego, just low quality customer service. It's a biscuit with some chicken on it that it. Kappa!

J W.

Yelp
Loved the fried green tomatoes, the sauce was yummy! Everything on the breakfast plate was yummy, and we especially loved the potatoes!

Yelp
I already want to go back to COMO, just so I can eat at, Ozark Mountain Biscuit & Bar again. Yes, it was that damn good. It was so good, I want an extra star to give them. A group of 5 cousins was down in COMO to celebrate the birthdays of 2 local cousins. When we asked where should we all go for breakfast on Saturday morning, they didn't even take a breath before saying, Ozark Mountain Biscuit. They knew we all were foodies, who loved breakfast. I consider myself a connoisseur of biscuits and gravy and Ozark has definitely mastered this dish. In their "our story" on their website, boost about family recipes being handed down for generations. I'm glad no-one lost the biscuit recipe. They're huge, fluffy/flaky and have a golden crispy outside. Ozark just doesn't offer one type of gravy, they give you two to choose from. Having been raised on a farm, I choose, sausage which is from Patchwork Farms. It was had the perfect texture and was filled with chunks of flavorful sausage. The other choice is a vegetarian, made with local oyster mushrooms. I love it when local supports local. You're given the opportunity to add two eggs to your order of B&G and I had mine scrambled with white cheddar cheese. When my plate was presented to me, I was surprised that the eggs were placed on top of my biscuits. I was expecting them on the side, but being on top actually was better. I was still able to have single egg bites and dual bites as well. Thumbs up for their Bloody Mary and Mimosas, too. My mimosa had a heavy pour of bubbles, which always wins me over. Another cousin had the Bloody Mary, that was served in a short glass. A small pot of coffee was brought to the table, making it easy to refill cups as we chatted. Oh, I almost forgot. We all shared a couple of huge Cinnamon Rolls. It was like having a appetizer for breakfast. If wasn't overly sweet and had the perfect amount of glaze on top. Our server was friendly and provided top notch service for our large group. I gotta go back, I want to try the Chicken Fried Steak for breakfast and the Fried Chicken for dinner.

Yelp
Looked this place up on Yelp as it was highly rated. We went here on Sunday morning around 10. Wait was 30 minutes. Place is gorgeous. Bar was packed. LOL. Waitstaff was really nice and attentive. Really took care of us. Presentation of the food was great. My egg, cheese, bacon biscuit was perfect size. Not too much but filling. I definitely want to come back here the next time we visit Columbia.

Tim

Yelp
Someone brought me chicken sandwich for lunch from here. It would be impolite not to give them a second go around...........chicken was not done bun was not good. last time to review this place, just not worth eating for free.
google avatar

Yelp
First time visit to the Ozark Biscuit & Bar for lunch and was impressed with the service, food and dining area. I had the Classy chicken sandwich which is a buttermilk chicken sandwich between a big farm made biscuit. Delicious! We ordered a couple of sides to share including the crispy potatoes which were very good. There are a variety of tables and chairs as well as booths for you to choose from, and our server took good care of our table. I'll be back!

Yelp
First time in Missouri and a client recommended I visit Ozark's. Came on Easter Sunday evening and the place wasn't packed. Got a good seat outside as the sun was setting. Really loved the energy and vibe of the patio. The staff was super friendly and even recommended some bakeries for me to check out the next day. Food wise, I got the shrimp appetizer and the catfish biscuit sandwich. Both were delicious and hit the spot. If you want an extra punch, highly recommend drenching your food in their homemade Louisiana hot sauce. The perfect amount of sour and not very spicy! The biscuit was also fluffy and not dry, yum!

Yelp
Close on the holiday!they started with food truck for 10 years, they finally have ground place to eat all the time, it's easy to get to in and out, plenty of parking too, the food truck still goes out during the week, the food is awesome, they have a bar area and dinning room too with a patio, this place is across from Longboat brewery, the food is really good, chicken and waffles, biscuits and jam for on the road, staff is amazing and friendly too, if you haven't been here this is a must to visit, this is one of my favorite stops here, I will visit st.Louis and it's a drive, but now I go halfway and stop here for the night
google avatar

Yelp
Very nice meal. Large outdoor patio and bar. Meals can be a bit expensive for casual dining. No childrens menu. Enjoyed the fried green tomatoes and fried pickled okra.
google avatar

Shay D.

Yelp
This was my first time at the actual location. They have a food truck that I have had previously. The actual spot is spacious and gives a chill type of vibe. For appetizers my friends and I shared the fried green tomatoes which came with a chipotle type sauce. It was hot and tasty. Main course was the fredericks burger which has pickled pickles on it. I am not a fan of pickles but they way these were done for the burger was good. I also got the strawberry salas which I do recommend unless you have a nut allergy. Any salad with fruit is good. Choice of drink: blackberry jamboree. Its a bold flavor when you take that first sip and it is grainy in texture. More tarte than sweet but refreshing. Dessert choice was the blueberry cheesecake with an almond crust. I did not care for the crust but the cheese cake itself was ok. Give me vegan vibe which takes some time to adjust. Service was fast and good.

Yelp
We ate here as they have many gluten-free options. Which is appreciated. The ambiance is kind of like a diner. Maybe supposed to have a farmhouse feel but I wouldn't describe it as cozy. The service was great- quick, kind and thorough. One in my group had one of the blackberry jam alcoholic drinks and liked it. The food was fair. The pulled pork was oddly sweet. I normally enjoy sweet- but this was different- not to my taste. And I normally really enjoy pulled pork. Collard greens needed some seasoning. Very bland. Skip the hush puppies- also very bland. If i went back I would be trying something different next time.

Yelp
I have eaten at Ozark four times now, each time thinking it will be better! It's consistent but not good. the food is served cold, tasteless and overcooked. Since Sunday is St. Patrick's Day I ordered corn beef and cabbage. the corn beef was fried! It was so tough you couldn't cut it with a steak knife. The worst food I've ever tried to eat. Each time I've eaten there I have tried something different! All bad. I won't go back.

Yelp
This place is a must!! Great atmosphere, kind staff, and great food! The lighting and cleanliness is top notch and everything about it was enjoyable and happy!

Yelp
What an awesome vibe and great southern food! We got lucky and hit the bed of happy hour.. select cocktails, definitely try the Blackberry Jam cocktail plus 25% off apps. We loved the hush puppies and house made chitlins. Son loved the chicken fried chicken biscuit sandwich. I had the southern fried chicken Caesar salad.. so good. Husband had the ranch chicken salad.. delicious! Staff, bartender and Brie our waitress was fantastic!! Great service for an amazing price. We're making plans to return for brunch tomorrow.. love being back at Mizzou!! Thanks for a great welcoming, smiles, service, vibes and food.

Yelp
We absolutely love dining at Ozark Mountain for brunch on Saturdays! The atmosphere is on point, the food is great, and the staff is phenomenal. We have never had a bad experience here! The only reason I marked it down to four stars is because the gravy for the biscuits is not my favorite - I think maybe it has fennel in it? Other than that, it's a wonderful place and I cannot recommend it enough!
google avatar

Yelp
Great food and nice atmosphere. Service was quick and friendly. Bacon was cooked perfectly!

Yelp
Heading out of Columbia and wanted a hearty breakfast for a long day of traveling. We were a party of 6, and the service and food lived up to the recommendation of my brother and sister in law, restaurant owners in Columbia. I'm not skinny because I like food and drink. I really like chicken fried steak (and buffalo wings, but at different meals). I'm not really excited about gravy that tastes like flour. Or has a consistency that points to a #10 can on the prep table. They had both a sausage and a mushroom gravy. I went with the sausage stand-bye, but my son went mushroom and said I made the lesser choice. Potatoes were very good, and my over-easy eggs were.... Over easy (Not as common as one might think).
google avatar

Katie B.

Yelp
great breakfast, second visit this week! Country Breakfast was delicious, biscuits and sausage gravy was phenomenal i'll visit again to try more food items and enjoy coffee
google avatar

Josephine L.

Yelp
The kinks have definitely been worked out. The menu doesn't strike as super unique. Everything is super familiar homey American food. Let's just say be prepared to be surprised by the food. Yes it's American Southern staples but they do it right and more. It's relatively affordable quality food. Service was also great, quick to take orders and quick for food to arrive. I'd say this is probably one of the best breakfast/lunch spots in Como.

Kim W.

Yelp
I love this place for either food or drinks. The biscuits are fine. Should be better if they are in your name.

Bruce P.

Yelp
Great biscuits at the Farmers Market. It's the main reason I go. The brick and mortar location in town is great as well.
google avatar

Sarah P.

Yelp
The restaurant is gorgeous. It's busy, though so I was really glad to get a table. The bar is beautiful. Definitely want to come back for that. The food was really good. I got an omelet and it was covered with cheese, but very tasty. The biscuits were tasty. The pancakes looked really delicious too but I was too full at that point to try them.
google avatar

Yelp
Modern take on folk menu from rural Missouri. Incredible bar menu, the food menu ...sublime. Highly recommend for brunch
google avatar

Sydney H.

Yelp
Oh boy do I love this place! Such a great weekend brunch spot especially because they do breakfast all day! I've only ever been on the weekends and there has been a pretty long wait every time. I think its worth it & pretty much expected at any good brunch place on a Saturday or Sunday, so I have never minded. Their mushroom gravy is my favorite thing I've had from here so far. It is sooo flavorful and you can put it on all the rest of your food too. The biscuits that come with it are very fluffy and come with easy-to-pull-apart layers. Delicious. A second favorite of mine is the "home fries" (potatoes). They have a good mix of really crispy ones and medium crispy ones. None of them are too soft, they all have a perfect crunchy outside. The potatoes also come with an amazing roasted tomato aioli that is wayyy better than ketchup (the potatoes are great smothered in the gravy as well). Their mac & cheese is great too. Very rich and creamy. I recommend sharing it because a few bites is all you need. The pepper jam and baked cheese (not pictured) is average, probably would never order again. Last thing I've tried here are the pancakes. Also pretty average, although I would order them again if I'm have having a craving. Only downside is they don't do chocolate chips :( 10/10 recommend for breakfast or brunch with your family or friends!!

Yelp
Food was okay. I have biscuits and gravy, two eggs, and home potatoes. Potatoes were the best biscuits were good did not care for the eggs. Service was outstanding. Ask for Amy as your server, she was great. We sat on the outside patio.

Yelp
biscuits were genuinely delicious! service was pretty nice. ambiance was meh but nothing that ruins the experience

Yelp
Great food. The service was good and the ambience is like home. Great place to sit enjoy breakfast and talk.

Yelp
This is a "everyone needs to eat here" breakfast, brunch, or lunch spot in Columbia, MO. Cute shop and open views of the biscuit bakers, a nice outdoor patio for sunny mornings, this biscuit bar has a little something for everyone. The drink menu sounded yummy, and while we didn't order anything other than coffee, there was adequate variety for those looking for a brunch starter. Our party enjoyed the rally, buttered biscuits but found the gravy a little bland, the chicken a little dry. The pimento cheese was DELICIOUS, and redeemed an otherwise average breakfast in a sweet and comfortable atmosphere. Great service and we asked our waitress for a recommendation on dinner, which turned out great! COMO has so much to offer and OMBB was a nice start to our first day in the city.

Yelp
We've been here several times over the past couple months! We stumbled upon this place after coming to Logboat, and were excited to find a new bar in town. We love that they have everything from breakfast to dinner to coffee. The drinks have all been phenomenal. Food has been great as well. The staff is all very friendly and welcoming. - Blackberry jamboree (4/5): they use their own jam, so this drink is pretty sweet. But very tasty with a bit of tart. - Deluxe Bloody Mary (4.5/5): one of the best bloodys in town! Love the added crispy bacon, and the flavor is just superb. These are my go to drink and this one did not disappoint. - Farmer's market scramble (4/5): love!! All the fresh veggies and squash make it super fresh and tasty. The breakfast potatoes are perfectly crispy. The buttered biscuit was perfect. This was super filling and a big portion! - Fried chicken and waffles (4/5): the breading of the chicken was delicious, super crispy but not too thick which was great. The waffle tasted fresh and pecans were a perfect touch. - Wavy gravy fries (4.5/5): mixing the cheese and gravy made for a perfect combo. These breakfast potatoes are already delicious, and adding all the cheesy gravy made it amazing. Definitely very filling and heavy but so good We love this place and would recommend to all!

Allison S.

Yelp
Super cute breakfast spot! Southern breakfast at its finest. Coffee bar was fantastic! The staff there was all really nice. Little bit of a wait but not bad for a Sunday morning
google avatar

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
Sunday Funday Brunch @ozark_biscuits We started with all the beverages. Coffee (strong and perfectly bitter) and the Grapefruit Sparkler (refreshing and add a little salt perfect!). Then a random order of the Jettie's biscuit (sorghum and molasses - sweet and deep flavor, nothing I have ever had before!), side of cheesy grits (YES cheese and garlic - yum) and the egg & cheese biscuit (get the pimento cheese). We like the pimento cheese so much we got so to go.
google avatar

Stefan H.

Yelp
Been to Ozark a few times since they got their brick and mortar restaurants and have always had a good experience! Favorite thing on the menu is the chicken fried steak. Was slightly disappointed the second time I ordered it as I received half the portion they served the first time, but it still tasted incredible. Maybe I need to go back and try it again, but I've been slightly underwhelmed by the biscuits. Whenever I've ordered them, their texture is slightly dry and they don't seem particularly fresh. Overall still a quality spot for brunch!
google avatar

Niko P.

Yelp
Great service. Cool zone. We had a nice work lunch and were able to sit with the pups outside.
google avatar

BurgerSnob E.

Yelp
Nothing to write home to mom about. Server is not fit for service. We sat and watched our food sit on the 'order up' counter getting cold while our server was too busy working to bother with customers.
google avatar

James E.

Yelp
Some places just don't live up to the hype - but *this* one does! Every single thing we had today was done right. Biscuits? Phenomenal. Gravy? We tried the cremini mushroom gravy quite by accident, but an exceedingly happy accident. Never had pimento cheese on a sausage egg and cheese biscuit? Go there. Do that. The grits were so authentic they had a twang. The sausage and bacon were splendid. We didn't have a chance to try the lunch menu this visit, but I assure you we will do so. There are some pretty wonderful sounding options listed. But then again, we didn't try the cinnamon roll, and I do love me a good cinnamon roll, so maybe lunch and breakfast both next time... Oh, and the Bar. It is, after all, called Biscuit and Bar. The bar is clearly not an afterthought. What it is, in fact, is a legitimately sophisticated cocktail bar, well equipped with very fancy garnishes, assorted bitters, barrel aged cocktails, and some very nice spirits (Colonel Taylor, anyone?) We dined at the bar. The service was excellent, with Joshua taking great care of us. I'm looking forward to returning soon!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in for breakfast Sunday morning. They open at 9am on Sunday and there was a line to get in. The place filled up fast. The service was very good. Hostess greeted and seated us promptly. Our server had a delightful personality. Food came out quickly. It was hot and delicious. I highly recommend.
google avatar

Hanna A.

Yelp
I'd heard so many great things about OMB and wasn't disappointed! I came here with a friend and the ambience is everything you could want in a chic biscuit spot. It's also got quite the bar selection, so you could stop by in the evening for drinks too! I got the COMO hot chicken biscuit and it was pretty tasty! Nothing over the moon, but I'd like to come by for breakfast sometime! Sadly the service was pretty slow and forgetful at times. Wasn't super busy, so didn't feel like this was justified :/
google avatar

Sandy-Lee E.

Yelp
Good fresh food, helpful friendly staff. Highly recommend visiting the food truck whenever they are at any event.
google avatar

Yelp
Love anything I have ordered during my many visits to OMB&B! Biscuits are better than any anywhere! Drinks and food are brought to the table quickly and with a smile! Dining area is clean and well lit for a great dining experience.
google avatar

Jenny C.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place. I love the set up and I love to see small businesses grow. But instead I got hard biscuits and congealed gravy and hands down the blandest overpriced potatoes I've ever had. I swear all they did was roughly chop them and drop them in a fryer. If I pay $6 dollars for home fries I expect them to be good. I went twice and each visit was the same. Honestly, you can get a better meal at Wendy's for a fraction of the price!
google avatar

Mai C.

Yelp
We were super excited about this place because they have a strong biscuit game with their food truck. We will come back and revise our review accordingly in hopes that they are just working on the kinks and the food will be better next time. There's a nice bar in the back and the wait wasn't long. 1. Jetties biscuit - this was a nice start. Would be great if they split the biscuit and then apply the maple syrup bc you only get the maple syrup on top and the rest of the biscuit ends up being plain 2. Mac and cheese - good Mac to cheese ratio. It needed a little something extra like bits of bacon to bring it all together. Also the corn bread topping wasn't crispy but just kind of stale. If they want to use it as a bread topping it needs a better execution. Maybe over roast it w some butter to give it a better crisp. 3. Egg, bacon and cheese biscuit - this was the big fail. First the biscuit that was used for this sandwich was very different than the one that was used for the appetizer. It was way more stale, super dry and hard to swallow. I did not even eat half this sandwich. I took three bits and stopped because it wasn't worth the effort to try to force it down. The egg did not help add and moisture because it was cooked hard over so it was dry too. Maybe they use a different biscuit for the sandwich bc it holds together better but it did not work. I would also recommend cooking the egg over easy or doing a fluffy soft scramble. 4. Biscuits and gravy - because the biscuits are covered in gravy as you can see from the photos it was hard to determine if the quality of the biscuit was the same as the sandwich. The gravy was nice and not over salted which we appreciated.
