The 29 Best Restaurants in Salt Lake City, Utah | Eater

"This family-owned restaurant and market specializes in Polynesian food, and has become a beloved gathering place for Polynesian Americans in the community. For decades the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has sent missionaries to the Pacific region, inspiring migration both ways, historical culture ties, and a mutual love of Pacific Islander cuisines. Pacific Seas serves island favorites including Hawaiian musubi, Samoan muli pipi (turkey tails boiled and fried), Tongan lu/luau (taro leaves served with lamb), and whole fried golden pompano. Wash it all down with a refreshing mango ’otai, a blend of fresh mango, pineapple, and coconut. Must-try dish: Don’t forget a bag of Bongo baked chips in flavors like cheese or chicken, imported from Fiji." - Sarah Entwistle

My brothers took us here while visiting from NC. This place was amazingly good! The food was cooked perfectly, it was hot and my favorite were the turkey tails. Turkey tail were so flavorful and moist. The staff were patient and friendly, which was a plus for me. Great atmosphere too. This will be my go to for my Polynesian food fix on my next future visits. Definitely recommend and will return.

Stopped in for lunch. Polynesian daily or street food. Service was friendly and portions were large. I tried the Kale Moa, Saudi Moa, pork chop, and sweetened potatoes. Food was good but tithing really stood out to me.

Google
I had Chicken curry, Sausage. Side dishes were banana and white rice. Chicken curry had good flavor but pork sausage wasn't that good. Services are okay, but the dining area was not clean enough.

Wow! What an amazing discovery. I’ve been living in Salt Lake all my life on the west side and never came across this gem of a restaurant that’s been around for 30 years. I tried the Lu, which is lamb wrapped in taro leaves, and the Kale Moa, which was a tender and delicious chicken curry, all served with root vegetables like sweet potato and taro. Definitely get the ‘otai drink as well to wash it all down. I had mango. The staff is incredibly friendly. And the food is outstanding. Can’t wait to go back!

Google
I've had almost everything on the menu, and it's all good. All members of the family who owns the restaurant are very nice. The service is fast. Thr portions are generous. It's just a great restaurant. You should eat here at least once a month!

Ordered Doordash delivery from Australia for my Mum - This is her favourite restaurant, makes her feel at home back in Tonga. 🙏🏽

Google
Welcoming folks with decent variety. We got 3 choice plate with rice, sweet potatoes, chicken curry, ota & turkey tails. With otai (mango drink) added. Would recommend everything again except ota. The flavor was great. The texture of raw fish was a bit chewy, which might be what it's supposed to be. Just wasn't our preference. Everything was thoughtful and considered. Rice and potato placement in the box. Crispy turkey tail 😋 Otai was kept in the fridge without ice. Nice amount of fresh pineapple at the bottom was a pleasant surprise!! Sadly, we were starving when we arrived, so I didn't grab a photo beforehand. We will be back! Thank you

Yelp
Went there during my lunch break. I was craving musubi and they were the closest to work that had them. The lady at the front counter was very nice along with the rest of the staff. The parking lot seems a little small for a large truck, but I know that is not something they have control over. Will be going back again

Yelp
Food was awesome!!! Filled a cooler to take on my flight to Alaska!!! So delicious!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Their plates have definitely gotten smaller from the previous years but the quality of their food has never changed. I will always come here to get my fix for Tongan food. The otai they make could be improved but other than that this is the best spot hands down.

Yelp
This place was amazing!!! Dint be shy and ask questions about the name and the ingredients. I had the noodles and the ribs. OMG so much flavor. But the best thing in the world was the fruit juice! I could have drank a gallon of it.

Yelp
I live in Nevada so I try to stop by when I visit because I've heard so many good things about this place. I must say I wasn't disappointed. My husband and I both ordered the lu sipi and sipi combo with green bananas and it was hot and simply delicious! The lu sipi is salted just right - not too salty, just enough so that we didn't have to go looking for salt (IYKYK). The green bananas had just enough coconut milk (not drowning in it) and the sipi had been marinated in some kind of soy sauce concoction and cooked just right. Did I say we enjoyed our meal? :) The only disappointment was that there wasn't any otai. There are other items on the menu, such as kale moa (chicken curry), sapasui moa (chicken chop suey), turkey tails and others that I am unable to recall. I wish I'd taken a picture of the menu board. The starches include green bananas, taro, yam (kumala) and I think tapioca (manioke). The service was quick and efficient. There 2 lines - one for ordering and the second for payment and pick-up. The young people working the counter and kitchen have the system down pack. We didn't dine in as we had a long drive ahead of us, but there are tables and chairs available. The dining area isn't too big, but there are enough tables and chairs to accommodate a small group of 20, at least. There is also a small area to the right as you walk in where it appears they sell a small assortment of Pacific Island staples, including canned corned beef and other goodies. I highly recommend this place if you love Pacific Island (Polynesian) food, whether you're a Pacific Islander or not.

Yelp
The food quality has gone down significantly. I have eaten their cooking for 30+ years. The Lu Sipi is dry and I don't even know if they prep it properly( no coconut milk) Fuck. Used to be the best place in Salt Lake in my opinion. I don't know if I can say that anymore everything is too dry . I went to get a plate today and my Kumala was cold, which lets me to believe that it was not prepared today. I could be wrong. I don't know how I can support going there all the time..

Yelp
This place feels like a legit Tonga place for native Pacific Islanders in a commercial area. Family run business. Huge portions of food. Got a two item combo and could only finish 2/3. Will get the more common stuff like pulled pork next time. If you ask for water in a cup, it'll be tap water.

Yelp
This is one of the spots where you know it is going to be fire from the moment you pull into the parking lot. Coming back to Pacific seas is going to be a routine whenever we are in Salt Lake. It's no frills, it's homey, and it's delicious. We ordered the three item plate with the chicken curry, the brisket, and the lamb luau and it came in mouth watering giant portions packed tightly together. That tender lamb luau is up there with the bites you can have in the city.
google avatar

Celeste T.

Yelp
Visited this spot a while back and was not disappointed! The smell of all the food hit us in the face immediately when we walked in. Ever get more hungry when that happens? Is that thing? Let's make it a thing ;) I ordered a 3 item plate: Pork Chops, Mulipipi (turkey tail), Sipi (Lamb) with Kumala. Also had some Mango Otai (mango juice drink) to wash it down. Pork chops were tender and the gravy was perfectly seasoned and gave me the homestyle cooking feels I was looking for. Mulipipi was on point, easy to bite into. Service has been polite every time we've went. They are fast at completing your order, we pay then it's bagged and ready to go. You'll park on the road next to them if you can't find a parking in the lot.

Yelp

Yelp
Came out here to SLC with the hubby for trucking from Texas & this spot did not disappoint! Everything was made so well. The food was on point! Pacific Seas y'all did not miss!!! Worth every dollar!

Yelp
Best Tongan/Samoan (T/S) food in the game. I've been to so many different T/S restaurants but none can top Pacific Seas. It's affordable, the portions are big (except for the ota), the food is delicious and the workers are so friendly. My only complaint is the mango otai; it's always too "liquidy" for me and not enough mango and other ingredients in it. Other than that, Pacific Seas is the place to go.
google avatar

Lyoni P.

Yelp
Flavors straight from the Island! This is your place to go. Where to begin. Rice and sapasui always on point if you know you know! Sipi is lamb rib that is graciously marinated, give it a try. Ota is raw fish with coconut milk, mouth watering and fresh! Lu is my first time trying it. Bomb! Say less! Lamb wrapped in taro leaves cooked in coconut milk and other seasonings. Delicious! My mom order the whole fish which is pompano! She absolutely loved it. No blandness occurring here. Service was fast, the ladies were welcoming and kind. She helped me understand what certain food was since I don't speak our language. Don't come for me we were never taught it. I'm learning. Just go here! You will not regret it and if you don't understand, they will assist you. Ambiance is laid back and simple table and chairs to sit and eat. Island music playing. This is a place where people know each other. 10/10! Highly recommend for your cravings! Delicious, fresh and made with love!

Yelp
There's very few Polynesian spots out there. Utah lucky they got this one and a few. I'm from Texas but everytime I go to Utah it's always this spot. Love the way they cook their turkey tails.
google avatar

Yelp
Great island food! Definitely worth the stop if I'm Utah! We were just passing through from Texas and had to stop in. Glad we did! Good music too!

Yelp
Menu has grown, more options and more tasty items. They no longer run out of the best tasting proteins early in the afternoon like before. Customer service has improved and they are able to move the line quickly. Still my go-to place for Polynesian food in Utah, never had a bad meal well except the time they run out of collard greens and substituted cabbage. I will let that one slide. :-) The lamb in taro leaf, and the lamb ribs are my favorites. Also love the raw fish in coconut milk, the creamed collard greens with corned beef and the fruit drink made fresh every day. For sure will be back as I am a regular customer here.
google avatar

Taelani C.

Yelp
The portions were shareable, and it was delicious! Family environment and felt like home away from home. Friendly staff!
google avatar

Filiku M.

Yelp
Been coming here for the pulu masima and sipi for years but recently (2yrs now) been coming for the mui pīpī and I love it! The staff is always friendly and I feel really cool ordering in my native tongue Always get the talo unless you're allergic to Tongan steroids then get the kūmala If you're lucky your uncle might pop in and pay for your food and if he does get 2 cups of otai 5 stars for your uncle maybe paying for your meal
google avatar

Jermaine C.

Yelp
This is easily one of my favorites in the Salt Lake City area. It's like Polynesian Soul Food! So fresh and tasty. The flavor profiles are through the roof! I cannot get enough! These are one of those spots where you just keep coming back. Yes , please take my money while I sit happily in the corner chowing down on some down right delicious Tongan food. You might not find food like this anywhere else in the area. And lastly, get the Mango Otai drink to wash it all down. I promise you will not be disappointed!

Letuu L.

Yelp
Food is cooked to perfection. You want authentic Polynesian food this is the place. Service is very good and friendly.
google avatar

John A.

Yelp
Delicious Polynesian food. Loved the turkey tail. Look forward to my next visit. Wish I lived closer.
google avatar

Mike J.

Yelp
Hale who has 5 Tongan nieces and nephews. PS is awesome! The chicken was close to perfect. Pork was even closer. But the la'pulu was the bomb! I like it just a little overdone, and PS found me three perfect bundles. This is the type of family owned we have to endure succeeds! No, hesitation, one of the best 5 dives in SLC!
google avatar

Dean F.

Yelp
So, so Good. Love this place. Family owned and has all my favorite Poly foods. Worth the drive from Davis County.
google avatar

Raymi G.

Yelp
Food is delicious, ordering is extremely simple, and the staff is very friendly. Just a few tips from experience: check that you have everything you ordered; don't even try to call their phone number because their phones either don't work or they don't answer calls, and if they do they may forget to get back to you after putting you on hold (LOL); get your receipt. I highly recommend trying their chicken curry, sapasui, and lamb. Yum yum yum! Support family businesses.
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
We didn't realize until we arrived at 5 that they closed at 6 so maybe the experience, and subsequent review, would be different if we'd gone for lunch. I had previously scoped their menu and knew what I wanted to try but when I attempted to order I was informed that all that was available was lamb ribs and curry. The curry was fine but nothing special and the ribs were small and mainly fat. Neither met expectation or was worth the price. They also started shutting down by 5:30 (guess they were out of food so why not) making it awkward enough we quickly finished and left. There was nothing there to motivate me giving it a second chance.

Natalie B.

Yelp
Yummy Best Pacific Island food in Utah. I grew up with Islanders from Tonga eating these foods. Clean delicious food! My entire family loved the meal! If Uber eats delivered, I would order again for lunch tomorrow. Very friendly staff with a good vibe in the restaurant.

Yelp
Always a pleasure. The only place in town where you can get authentic Pacific Islander food. They rule!!!!
google avatar

Raneal C.

Yelp
Awesome for the adventurous, my favorite items were the lamb cooked in taro leaf, and the turkey tails, not including their amazing mango otai. The lamb was quite salty, but went perfectly with the yuca and the taro root, and the Turkey tails were perfectly tender and seasoned. A humble place, great people, honest portions good enough for us to come back
google avatar

Kaliaah S.

Yelp
Ok! I give them credit for the portions but favor wise it's average, not worth the long drive or my money!

Mark C.

Yelp
Friendly service - first time I've tried this and will come back again. Great flavors and be prepared for leftovers.

Yelp
This is a real hidden gem of Utah. I thought I knew what Pacific Islander food is, but then realize I didn't know what I was talking about quickly. This place isn't the fanciest place ever, but they will feed you and it will make you super full with yummy food and happiness. This is an order at the counter place. They do have a menu that they will have up on a board. Not sure what they are? Good me too...they can just show you or even tell you and you can pick that way. The staff here is super friendly, and they work very fast, so the lines moves quick. You first decide which kind of plater you want. I went for the one entree. After choosing, its then is your carbs ordering. I got the steamed/boiled tapioca. Then the hardest part...the meats/main entree...I was so confused and panicked a bit. So I ordered the nearest meat I can see...they called it the turkey tail. I wasn't paying much attention to the portion size and just ordered and paid. When I got back to my work and saw that one entree was a huge portion, my eyes bulged and my stomach became happy. They gave me three huge piece of turkey and a lot of tapioca to go with it. By the time I reached half way I was super full. Totally worth it.
google avatar

Maleka H.

Yelp
Only suggestion is the collard greens with the corned beef was really tough to eat. Curry chicken was delicious all the flavors are good.there Raw fish awesome. Portions are large!
google avatar

Mari S.

Yelp
We had delicious food, lovely service & an overall wonderful experience! I wish I could live in Utah to come here more often. Ifo!!!
google avatar

Walter C.

Yelp
Decent food at a decent price. Not an overly bad place. A bit of a surprise to find the glass windows and door with bars. Parking is a bit of a trick. I found the menu somewhat confusing, but the people there are pretty helpful so you don't feel like a complete idiot. My bad. I was expecting Hawaiian food, we got more stuff from the other end of Polynesia.
google avatar

Moana W.

Yelp
Delicious Polynesian food, got real homesick and had to make this drive to get some good ole Samoan food. So delicious!!
google avatar

Victoria M.

Yelp
This place is pretty solid as far as Polynesian food goes and not as overpriced as other places can get. We have been coming here for years now and their quality is consistent. They specialize in Polynesian food (Tongan/Samoan) My absolute fave is their la'ipele pulumasima (leaves/coconut cream w/ bits of corn beef) its sooo good! Everything here is very good actually. I'm soo glad they're still around as many poly restaurants tend to pop up and close down just as quickly. I need to try their mango otai next visit. I'm sad we don't have anything closer up north :(

blake p.

Yelp
This is literally the best island food you could possibly have! The pork chops, turkey tail, lamb chops, fish are absolutely tremendous! I was just trying to list my favorite items but I pretty much listed their entire menu! If you go there on a weekend they serve octopus! The family is incredibly nice I remember I started going there frequently as a missionary for the church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints after my two years I came back and they remembered who I was! Tremendous people!
google avatar

Jermaine T.

Yelp
Amazing food. Will always be my go-to spot every time I visit Salt Lake City. Delicious and prepared well.
google avatar

Alexander P.

Yelp
Food here is not that good... I asked for the chop suey and they put potato on the bottom which is absolutely dry and gross and then a little bit of chop suey on top .....10 bucks for potatoes guys ? come on didn't even realize you put potatoes or sweet potatoes whatever it was in, till I got home I thought they're going to fill that whole bowl......then we also got the three meat deal the meat is just not that good I don't see what the hype is about this place wish I could get my almost $25 back for this meal...
google avatar

Peter K.

Yelp
If you LOVE Polynesian food come to this place! This place and food definitely reminds me of home "hawaii" and how my mom cooked yummy and delicious food! The portions size is pretty big more then enough for a person. The Otai and keke is frickin AMAZING! Kinda pricey for two plates but there a reason, everything has to be shipped. The overall feel just makes me wanna move back home and enjoy the island food.
google avatar

Marie S.

Yelp
I was craving Polynesian food and knew I could find some in SLC. The only reason why I gave them four stars is because they ran out of couple items. They have a menu with pictures but it doesn't tell you what each item is. It's mainly Tongan / Samoan style but many Polynesians eat and cook very similar. I got the two item plate. The Lu Sipi is meat in coconut milk and mayo wrapped in taro leaf. It's similar to laulau. It was very good. Cooked just right. They gave me two lu sipi. I wanted to ribs and pele pulumasima (taro, corned beef, collard green, coconut milk, mayo, onion and other stuff). but they ran out. I was really looking forward to eating the pele. The chicken sapasiu is the rice noodle. It was delicious. I got the taro or talo as a side. They gave me three huge pieces. It could feel 2-3 people. It's boiled or steamed. It's plain which is traditional. Be careful eating taro if it's your first time. It can make your tongue itch. They give huge portions so you may want to share. The dining area is like eating at your Polynesian friend's house. I like it. Food=5 stars Service =5 stars Availability =3 stars Dining room=3 stars

Yelp
Food was absolutely DELICIOUS. We came in around the late afternoon and there were plenty of items to choose from. Katea was very pleasant, welcomed us and gave a brief overview of our choices. She did it with a smile, gave reasonable portions and did not make us feel rushed at all. The taro in coconut sauce & kumala was a delightful combination with the turkey tail, sapa sui, and nz sosisi. I mistakenly chose the lu sipi thinking it was the samoan palusami that is creamy with coconut sauce. Hopefully they can add that to the list, that will really hit the spot! The dining seats aren't comfy but I really liked the display of pictures of special guests and the stores history. Plates were $15 + tax for a 2 item plate, a bit pricey than what other polynesian stores offered nearby, but the quality and selection were worth it!
google avatar

Tisha M.

Yelp
This place is delicious. Portion sizes are great and food is always tasty. Price is great for the portion size too! I'll always keep coming back.
google avatar

Rocky B.

Yelp
Food was amazing and big portions too. Turkey tail is amazing and loved the Chicken Chop Suey!
google avatar

Damien K.

Yelp
Flew into town for my mother's Birthday and chose them for catering. Great, easy, smooth transaction! Showed up on time, on the day of pick up and again they showed great customer service. Not only was everything ready but THE-FOOD-WAS-GREAT!!! It's no wonder why their business is still running. Highly suggest them to any/everyone! Ofa's from The Kama Family!

Yelp
I was looking for a place to grab lunch and was directed to an African restaurant next door. But, they were closed so I decided to give Pacific Seas a try even though it didn't show up on Yelp until I entered it by name. I'm so glad I did. It has a great assortment of real Polynesian dishes with a selection of sides which include sweet potato, taro, tapioca and green bananas. They really load your container up with the starches. I had the plantains which tasted great mixed with the main course. They have a one, two or Three entree dish. I was in the mood for seafood so I ordered the octopus and fish. They asked if I wanted gravy on the fish and I responded positively. It was very flavorful fish, a bit bony but the taste was great. You get a choice of the head or tail. The octopus was served in a tasty gravy too. It was very tender and had a great flavor. They have sriracha on the tables if you want to spice things up a bit. And I'd encourage one to try the house made pineapple and mango drink. Full of pineapple chunks and it is a great 32 oz cup with a giant straw to suck up the pineapple. A great option vs. a soda. I can't believe I haven't found this place before; it's so good. Not at all fancy, but the food is excellent and the family who run it are extra friendly. Highly recommended by me!

Yelp
I had the sapasui moa, kumala, pele pulu and muy pipí. Everything was delicious w reasonable prices! The servers were very polite and kind.

Yelp
Family friendly, island vibe and warm environment to top off THE AMAZING Tongan food on rotation. Been coming here since I was a child and won't ever buy Tongan food anywhere else. Just sink your forks into the old n faithful Pacific Seas, you won't be disappointed
