"Meat & Jollof Plate The best part about living in Uptown was all the different West African restaurants I had the chance to try. Out of those, Palace Gate Ghanaian Restaurant became my go-to. A lot of different stews, rice, and starches make up the menu, but my favorite is the meat and jollof plate. It’s a container packed with deliciousness - spicy, fragrant rice, tender stewed beef, and ripe, roasted plantain." - courtney sprewer

This place offers you the rare opportunity to taste Ghanian food. Some dishes are very spicy so be careful. I highly recommend anything with plantains. The only reason I gave it fewer stars is that they don't have prices on the menu and I kinda suspect they just pick a number based on how you look. I had an appetizer that cost the same as an entree and was definitely overpriced. But, it was all delicious!

Overall Thoughts: This is a small, homey family restaurant serving up traditional, delicious Ghanaian dishes. There was only one other party there when we came for dinner on a Sunday. My only suggestions are around the menu… it’s pretty hard to navigate if you have no prior knowledge of or experience trying Ghanaian cuisine, as there are no descriptions or even prices on the menu. It would’ve definitely been helpful to know the prices before ordering, but the prices seemed overall reasonable when we got the receipt at the end. The server (who seemed to be the owner’s daughter) helped answer any questions we had, and the food came out pretty quick. Otherwise, the food is wonderful and bursting with flavor— would totally recommend! Food I tried: - Kenkey with Fish (4.7/5): I liked this dish best out of everything we ordered. The kenkey itself had great starchy, umami flavor, and its soft, mushy texture paired perfectly with the fish which was crispy, well-fried, and flavorful. Combined the spicy shito and onions and neutral tomato, all the flavors came together perfectly. - Beans (Red Red) with Egg and Plantains (4.5/5): There weren’t a lot of vegetarian options on the menu, but this dish was a delicious, filling option. The beans were full of flavor and the plantains were some of the best I’ve ever had— they were perfectly fried and the oil brought out their maximal sweetness and softness. - Jollof Rice with Chicken (4.6/5): This was another favorite dish. The jollof was full of spice and flavor, and comes with plantains and your choice of protein. The chicken was super tender and fell off the bone; doused in flavorful sauce, the flavors were robust and hearty. - Peanut Soup with Rice Ball (3.6/5): I wasn’t a huge fan of the peanut soup here… It wasn’t as peanut buttery as I would’ve hoped, but I recommend getting the rice ball with it, if you order this dish. It’s slightly sweet on its own, and really soaked up the flavor of the soup. - Waakye with Beef (4/5): This was pretty good and flavorful. The beef was tender and the rice and beans were flavorful. — Price (relative to peers): 4.3/5 Food: 4.4/5 Ambience: 4.3/5 Service: 4.8/5 Overall Value: 4.5/5

I thought the price per portion was the strongest I've seen in the city. The rice was very fresh and extremely flavorful. The chicken was so tender and the sauces were on point. Plantains were huge value and quality Very quickly packaged for pick up. Will be back

Bankou tasted weird and too much baking soda in the soup. Also turkey tails is not turkey tail is actually turkey neck. I don’t live in Chicago we were traveling when I ordered the food and the man was complaining about the late pick up. Big portions of food but I’m not a big fan but you can enjoy it if you don’t know how to cook African food.

This is the worst food I have ever had in my whole life. I will not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Don’t waste your money my husband spent $70 on the food and we were unable to eat it. Had to throw it in the trash. Please DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS TRASH FOOD.

Anytime I am craving Ghanaian food I visit Palace Gate. One of the most authentic tasting Ghanaian Restaurants in the United States. Although I like to try different foods, I pretty much stick to the Waakye each visit. Probably because it’s one of my favorite meals and I can’t always count on Palace Gate to get it right.

I ordered the dokunu. It tasted okay but EXTREMELY spicy!!! I felt like I was about to pass out from the pepper. I’m Nigerian so I’m used to spice but this was ridiculous lol. The portion was bad, very very small. Also the place is ridiculously expensive. 20$ per plate for everything on their menu! I paid 20$ for the dokunu, but this place sells indomie noodles and yams for 20$!! Absolutely ridiculous and a big rip off! The lady seemed to have an attitude and was very rude. Would not recommend this place, but you can try it if you want

I love this place!! I went here with one my friends from out of town and we were blown away by how AMAZING the food was! My friend ordered the Fufu with Peanut Butter Soup and I ordered the Jollof Rice with Chicken. When I took my first bite, I was in heaven! This was our first time trying Ghanaian Food and will definitely be coming back! Service was excellent and staff was very kind. Transportation here by train was pretty close as we were 2 blocks from the Wilson Red line stop and they also have a small shared parking lot if you choose to drive here.
