Yelp
This review is especially meant for Italian ex-pats, New Yorkers, Sicilian Americans and anyone who longs for a genuine Old Country family meal while posted here "in the wild" in Los Angeles.
I am one of those, a Sicilian American New Yorker who misses genuine, fresh, delicious meals that we could have when we lived back at home.
You just don't find a Sicilian restaurant easily in Southern California, or perhaps, the entire West Coast (I lived in the East Bay up north for awhile and don't remember any). And, the fact that the owner is truly from the Palermo region himself and is there literally greeting, helping, welcoming patrons, is a bonus that is almost matchless now anywhere. Tony came right over to our table and chatted warmly for as long as we wished and seemed genuinely delighted that we were there. So much so that he added extras that go beyond the ordinary and that we will never forget. Grazie de cuore, Signor Tony!
As one would expect, if you know Sicilians at all, the entire restaurant was spotless, cheerful, cozy, radiating quality and a celebration of the culture itself. The place mats are an education in themselves (see my pictures).
But, what sets Palermo Ristorante apart from any other place in the greater Los Angeles area (and maybe the world, LOL??) is the food. When Tony assured us every single thing we would eat was made from scratch, he wan't exaggerating. For example, you may have had fried mozzarella elsewhere, but I guarantee you, not like this. Fresh marinara, golden cubes lightly breaded and toasty - squisita! Take a look at my photos to see what else we ordered. The menu is deep and that means (as if we need any excuse) we will have to return often and try every single non-meat item on it. As a vegetarian for over 40 years, I had no problem identifying a long list of dishes that I absolutely must try soon. Even vegans will be happy here.
We figured out where to put the car for free, which is easiest if you just venture down the side streets off Vermont and park in the residential areas. Then walk, especially now when the weather is lovely. The environs are charming and eclectic and we truly enjoyed seeing people doing their spring yard upgrades, every house unique. Parking on Vermont is metered and only for one hour. You will want more than an hour to savor Palermo, believe me.
We loved everything about it, i.e., the location in Los Feliz (yes, it makes us joyful to be there, noi eravamo quelli felici), the subdued restful lighting, the elegant mural, celebrity photos, vast wine collection on display (wow! make a list folks, this is a bonus at Palermo) and the prompt, efficient, solicitous service. (I want to thank Alex for taking such great care of us -- she is simply the best!)
We especially loved meeting and getting to know Tony, il nostro compaesano.
Don't miss this jewel for lunch or dinner or just dessert and coffee.
