I was introduced to Palmetto through a Yelp event and was ecstatic to finally find an açaí spot in the Bay Area. Moving from Hawaiʻi, the açaí bowls there are next level as everything is locally grown and freshly made. I'd often grab an açaí bowl after working out or hiking. In the mood for a light bite after my workout and before heading into the office, Palmetto was on my mind!
I came to Palmetto Superfoods with my companion. They have two locations in the city--one in Richmond and one in the Marina District. My first visit was to their Richmond location but the Marina was closer so we came here. Compared to the Richmond location, this shop is smaller. Inside is one stool to sit on, a tablet to order at, and the register. They do have a few seats and a parklet out front, but most patrons take theirs to go which is what we did. The workers were focused on crafting the bowls and calling the customers. I chose to order with the worker versus on the tablet which allowed me to better customize my bowl.
The menu is displayed with options of different sizes. Plus, the chance to build your own, choose their signature, or grab a fueling and healthy smoothie! During this visit my companion and I shared one of their signature bowls, a Small Bay Blend Bowl. We got this bowl without Goji Berries, Cacao Nibs, and Almond Butter. I think I just have higher expectations when it comes to açaí bowls but theirs was just okay. I couldn't really taste the fruit or flavor in the bases. Instead, some bases seemed icier and chunkier rather than smooth. The blue chia pudding was pretty to look at but tasteless. I did appreciate the granola held up and didn't get soggy. The berries were fresh and sweet. In terms of sizes, I'd say the small is great for a light meal. On my previous visit, I got a medium that was too big even to share. Be mindful that they pack on the toppings, portions are big, and it's affordable. If you're unsure what to get then I say go for their signature bowls. But if you feel like sprucing it up to your liking then I recommend their build-your-own bowl option. Next time, I'll probably build my own.
Personally, I found Palmetto to be okay but not stellar. By Bay Area standards it is one of the better and popular places. Thoughts aside, I wouldn't mind coming back to try their other offerings. Their Marina District location is off Union Street and fits right into the vibes the area gives off. Parking is street and metered or in surrounding neighborhoods. For those in San Francisco looking for a fueling, filling, and light meal or snack choice then açaí bowls and smoothies are the way to go.
