The Best Budget-Friendly, Affordable Restaurants in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Located in a small Centinela Avenue strip mall, this unassuming Westside mainstay serves 19 types of pupusas, including classics like pork with cheese, and loroco with cheese, as well as vegan options like squash with potato, and beans with Soyrizo. Plus, there’s a full pastry case of sweets, along with bread and other baked goods to round out the meal." - Eater Staff

The Best Pupusas In Los Angeles - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"At first glance, Los Cocos looks like a Salvadoran panadería with display cases full of conchas and golden quesadillas (the moist pound cake, not the cheesy tortilla dish). But look a little closer and you’ll see a small dry-erase board behind the counter listing off pupusas. The classics like revueltas and bean and cheese are quite good here, but this Del Rey shop is our go-to for veggie-stuffed pupusas with contrasting textures. Order the squash, onion, and carrot pupusa with crunchy vegetables peaking through the soft masa, which you should top with zippy purple cabbage curtido." - sylvio martins, brant cox, nikko duren

Google
Smelled like wonderful coffee and pastries at 10:30, and amazing like grilled cheese and corn pupusas upon picking up order at 11. I got the Vegan pupusas and they were delicious, especially the not-spicy curtido. Also tried Banana bread was moist and fresh. Looks like the sell out of most breads/pastries early. Service was 10/10 very friendly!!

Google
This is only the second time I've had pupusas but these were the best I've had! Very casual, unpretentious setting with a very friendly staff. They don't all speak English but that wasn't a problem at all. Very fairly priced as well. And if you've over ordered like me, definitely take the leftover pupusas back home, they are great in the oven or airfryer!! Will come back for sure! Edit: I did come back and brought some friends too, and we all absolutely loved it! Such a gem!

Google
The food was freshly made to order and absolutely delicious. The restaurant was clean and the staff was very nice and the service was excellent. I will definitely be going back.

Google
Great experience! Fair price and a great amount of fried plantains (which are my favorite) casamiento is also very good, however I do like the traditional one with black beans. Nonetheless the place is tasty and looking forward to come back. Food takes a while to make which I appreciate knowing that it’s fresh. I also loved the cheese on the pupusa and loved that it wasn’t greasy either. Great customer service!

Google
Delicious pupusas but the food takes a long time to be ready. Maybe they have a very small kitchen, but it's consistently a 20-30 minute wait for the food to go.

Christopher M

Google
It was my first pupusa but I would agree with other reviewers that it's mostly masa. Not sure if that's normal or not, but it definitely overpowers any other flavor that is inside. Good thing they give you plenty of cabbage and sauce otherwise you would get bored if this flavor very quickly. It took 25 mins to get my order. The older cashier bloke however is really, really friendly.

Google
Best pupusas!! #1 People are humble, nice and helpful. Pickled cabbage was on point. So happy we returned for 👍🏼👍🏼 breakfast.

Google
This place is a hidden gem if you like pupusas and fresh Salvadorian breads! Wonderful service and delicious pupusas. So happy I stumbled onto this place! 😁

Yelp
Killer food -- 6 stars. Vegan pupusas were super nice and so are the others. Coming back!

Yelp
Ever since moving to LA, I've been on the search for the perfect popusas on the west side. I ordered some popusas from them to-go and they did not disappoint! I ordered some pork and bean and mixed popusas. The service was quick and the size of the popusas actually surprised me. They were pretty big and filling! By the time I had them at home, they were still so hot and ready to eat. I'm definitely having some again!
google avatar

Yelp
Very bad served , they got mad because I ask her for my eggs over midium , and they burned . They told me they couldn't cook my eggs . Very rude. And the pupusas taste like tortilla whit Ben's is not salvadorian food
google avatar

Maite M.

Yelp
Nos encantan las pupusas veganas! Siempre hacemos el pedido por telefono y esta listo al llegar. Siempre estan frescas y recien hechas. Excelente servicio al cliente. We love the vegan pupusas here! We always order on the phone and the order is ready by the time we arrive. The pupusas are always fresh and they have excellent customer service.
google avatar

Raquel L.

Yelp
WOW!! These are the yummiest Pupusas! We ordered several different ones; cheese and jalapeño, cheese and chicken, and bean every one of them was popping hot when served. The sweet bread we got was amazing!! You have to go check them out! Enjoy!!
google avatar

Rebecca J.

Yelp
Hidden gem and the man who took my order was very attentive and well versed in exceptional customer service . The inside is small and it's not the most "clean "... but it's no secret some of the best eats come from places that don't earn the A ++ in all the areas . Just saying . Definitely would visit again if in the area :)
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
Really nice people who make really good pupusas and pastries. The place looks like it hasn't been updated in decades, but it's homey and the food more than makes up for it. I tried six different pupusas and I would recommend pretty much any that have cheese.
google avatar

Debbie G.

Yelp
The pupusas aren't as authentic as I would like but decent for it being on the west side. They don't carry Horchata de Moro which should have told me everything. However they do have a great selection of Salvadoran bread that I enjoyed. It's a small restaurant so I'd recommend calling in advance so your food is ready and you just pick up
google avatar

Randy H.

Yelp
I really enjoy everything they have here, but especially the Cheese Cake, not Pan Queso!!! Usually get the curtido picante with 2 revuelte!! But the laroco pupusas are straight from heaven!!
google avatar

Blanca M.

Yelp
I love coming here because it's a family owned business and they are super friendly . Food is delicious and the ambience is chill . Their pupusas are priced fairly but the taste is extraordinary . I love their sweet bread as well .
google avatar

Vincent D.

Yelp
This is a small business, a hidden gem! I absolutely love these types of places which sell great food for affordable prices. I got three pupusas with the "mix" (beans, cheese and pork). It came with the salsa and pickled cabbage. So good! $3 for each. My meal was less than $10 total after tax and I was definitely full! The wait can be kind of long, so I would recommend calling and ordering ahead so you can pick up right when you get there. Come and support this place!

Brittany S.

Yelp
Really good pupusas. We get the pork and cheese, bean and cheese, and potatoes, squash with jalapenos. Prices went up slightly
google avatar

Claudia G.

Yelp
Juicy pupusas and yummy pan dulce! The service was great; fast and courteous. Local ambience with great taste

Sop H.

Yelp
So good!!! Very grateful to have vegan papusas in my neighborhood! I come here any time I get the chance

Yvonne S.

Yelp
We eat the pupusas here. They are tasty. The platanos, rice and beans are also tasty. Pass on the casamiento (rice and beans mixed together) because the beans are pretty dry, and get the side of rice and beans instead. Call ahead to avoid waiting because pupusas take awhile to cook. Also, if you go at lunch time, they get kind of busy. Pricing is very reasonable and staff is nice, although depending on the person, they might not speak English, so it would behoove you to know some Spanish... There is a parking lot, but it is quite small. Depending on how full it is, it can be a bit tough to park, but you can always park on the street.

Jose N.

Yelp
the chicharron too salty, I order chicharron a beans but had some burned cheese on the outside
google avatar

Jackie D.

Yelp
My review is based on the Salvadorian quesadilla- it was horrible, dry, no flavor. Not legit!
google avatar

Will L.

Yelp
I had to come here and get me some pupusas to take home and wasn't disappointed. The Pupusas are only $2.50 and they have a good variety of different options..

Claudia B.

Yelp
Delicious pupusas and authentic Salvadoran tamales. There are two types of sweet quesadillas. The smaller ones are made with a different type of cheese and they are moist and delicious.
google avatar

Ryna D.

Yelp
Fantastic pupusas! Glad to have found this little gem of a spot. The humble bakery churns out delicious pupusas. Also highly recommended if you're looking for cheap eats!
google avatar

Lenny M.

Yelp
Fresh pupusas- perfect for a rainy Sunday - got the pupusas, plantains and cheeesecake bread to go. Paired it with coffee at home
google avatar

Sherif E.

Yelp
This little place is a hole in the wall, but it is a diamond in the rough. Their food is so good and fresh. I love the location, it is very close to Playa Vista. Parking is quick and easy and I can run in and run out with fresh baked goods. Every time I bring them to guests, peoples jaws drop and ask where I got them.

Silvia Y.

Yelp
This place will surprise you. Kind people good food and amazing prices! I got 3 pupusas and my favorite was loroco and cheese. Order ahead of time if you don't want to wait for your food like 10-15min (not bad at all) the cabbage tastes authentic and fresh. RECOMMENDED 10/10
google avatar

Tiffany C.

Yelp
Fresh fresh fresh papusas and bomb salsa. Order ahead cause this tiny restaurant is usually packed especially at lunch time
google avatar

Kedar D.

Yelp
This hole-in-the-wall Salvadoran cafe has exactly 5 prominently displayed vegan pupusa options. I got a vegan squash/onion/loroco ($2.50) and found it fine, but pupusas in general aren't the most thrilling food to me. The corn shell is starchy and dry and the filling almost universally bland. I'm not one to DIY my meals with a dozen different bottled sauces sitting on tables all day (though I recognize that could improve the flavor of a dish), so maybe that's my own failing. The interior is small with five plastic folding tables and a set of chairs. Bare bones. I appreciate Los Cocos because it has vegan options.
google avatar

Karen M.

Yelp
BEST PUPUSAS EVER!!! Randomly found this place while heading to the beach one day. We loved it because it had so many options for one of our vegan friends. The pupusas are so good and so cheap and really hit the spot. Definitely coming back again the next time that I'm in LA!

Noa B.

Yelp
Don't go here if you are not El Salvadoran or if you don't look like it. They will treat you and show you why you shouldn't. Took almost 40 minutes to get my food when i was the only person there at first. About 7 guest came after me and got the same food items as me & all got their food and left before i got my food. Very poor service. Would never go back. Food was 8/10

marti p.

Yelp
Best Pupuseria! Masa is thinner than the usual papusa, super light and filling's are savory and exquisite! Cabbage topping and salsa are delicious. Tamales are light and have more fillings. Excellent for any meal with family and friends .. A 10!
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Absolutely stellar pupusas. The best I've had on the west side. The curtido is exceptional as well, which is key. They're hefty, which makes them an amazing value, so just two pupusas will make a very hearty meal. The only downside is how long it takes to get your food when they're busy, but it means they're making it fresh. Just order ahead!
google avatar

Rosa G.

Yelp
No creo volver a regresar
google avatar

Jocy B.

Yelp
IF YOU NOT GOING TO COCOS THEN WHERE TF YOU GOING!? No seriously. As a true Salvadorian I have tried almost every pupuseria in the east bay and hands down cocos is the best by far! It's the only place my family goes to. Their pupusas are consistently good, filled perfectly, not doughy, cooked to perfection, and full of flavor. We always order the revueltas (chicharron/cheese/bean) , queso with lorroco, and their bean and cheese pupusas. You also have to try their fried yuca and their fried plantains. They are the best! I usually call 20 min before pickup and my food is always hot and freshly made. They have a group of very sweet ladies cooking and taking orders and their customer service is always great! Thanks cocos!
google avatar

Daniela Q.

Yelp
Amazing pupusas & tamales. Literally I only like 2 locations in Los Angeles. This is one of them. Makes sense why they are featured as one of the best pupusas in LA!
google avatar

Tanyx M.

Yelp
Fresh pupusas packed with flavour and reasonably priced! Highly recommend for fresh and yummy authentic pupusas! Vegan options and corn free available! For vegan recommend the potato and squash pupusas with rice flour

Michell P.

Yelp

Anna C.

Yelp
This has been my family's favorite spot since before I can even remember. The pastries are always fresh and delicious. I'm so happy to see this place successfully run after so many years. This place is a family owned business and they deserve all the love they get! Highly recommend trying anything if you have a sweet tooth :)
google avatar

Juliet K.

Yelp
Covid hours - right now they're open until around 6pm but are considering going back to 7pm. But double check before going! Overall the food is satisfying and yummy. It's a tiny hole in the wall place with some parking up front. I like the squash cheese onion pupusa! And the pork rind cheese one. The loroco one is good too but somehow the other ones hit the spot. Comes with pickled red cabbage and some salsa.
google avatar

Kristina K.

Yelp
This place has so many great vegan and vegetarian options in addition to all the regular pupusas, Chile rellenos and breakfast items. They have amazing plantains too which was a great surprise, in addition to having vegan soyrizo pupusas and so many others (18 different pupusas on the menu!!)! They also have a couple bakery cases filled with delicious breads and pastries! Super affordable, freshly made, home cooked style food. Absolutely give it a try!
google avatar

Mr. C.

Yelp
Great hidden gem! VERY cheap and filling! Vegan and vegetarian options. The older man (who I believe is the owner) is so nice, comes by to check you are enjoying everything and all. Mom and Pop authentic. Recommend this spot!
google avatar

Raul A.

Yelp
Hidden gem in Mar Vista, family owned, made to order. You might go to this plaza and miss it. It's a Panaderia(sell sweet bread), but they have a few tables where you can have 9 different styles of pupusas, which mind you, are the best pupusas around. They also serve your desayuno Salvadoreño which can include eggs, queso, casamiento, aguacate, and crema(your choice). They also bolillos(French roll) con crema y frijoles y huevo for like $3!!! The place may not look appealing but let their food do the talking. Now, let's not forget about the pan dulce. Cemita, peperecha, cannolis, and then some. And if you have not had a Kola Chanpan (Salvoderean soda), do yourself a favor and get one. The parking is very small, but go down the street, residential neighborhood, there is always plenty of parking.
google avatar

Alma G.

Yelp
I'm very picky about my pupusas but this place makes them really good. Love their pink curtido!
google avatar

Sonia A.

Yelp
Local whole in the wall pupuseria did not disappoint! My favorite pupusas in general are cheese and loroco and this was bomb. They are nice size. I got the mixed meat also which was good but again I prefer cheese and loroco better. They have a lot of great meat options. Comes with cabbage and salsa. I also got a a tall can coconut water from the fridge. The Staff is friendly, don't speak much English. They accept card.
google avatar

Pamela T.

Yelp
This place has the best vegan pupusas , many different options to choose from and they are very affordable I usually pay $5 for one but here it's $3. Definitely will be coming back!
google avatar

Jenny L.

Yelp
Never met a Pupusas I didn't like. The trend continues. I can taste the love that goes into these round discs of joy at Los Cocos. A local neighborhood gem, I'm so glad I tried and I encourage others to try too!

Aditi M.

Yelp
It was exciting to find some vegan pupusas- we got the beans+ loroco and squash + potato ones, both with jalapeños. The pupusas were delicious, and the sauce was very mild. If they had free water and a bathroom, I would give this place 5 stars (and we would stay for more pupusas). We ended up buying a soursop drink that my mom liked. Good for takeaway.

Ana M.

Yelp
Wonderful vegan options and the friendliest staff. Excellent food; I'll keep coming back.
google avatar

Estefania S.

Yelp
My favorite Pupuseria, number one because the food is delicious but also because it's a mom and pop and it feels so good supporting a small business. The owner is a sweetheart and he is always so kind. I don't usually bring cash so I feel bad when I can't tip on my card because there receipt doesn't have the option but I hope they find a way to put it on. They deserve it ! Love this place and would highly recommend. Ps try the cheesecake bread
google avatar

Cooking Monster O.

Yelp
open until 18:00 my favyis cheese & garlic, cheese & jalapeño they also have good children tamales!

Christine L.

Yelp
Best pupusas and Curtido all around. The portions are generous and perfectly made with good amount of filling. I've tried most of the pupusas on westside and valley and this is hands down the best of them all. Flavor and consistency of the pupusas and curtido ate all spot on. Highly recommend trying the garlic and cheese which is my new favorite. We've also tried the pork and cheese and several others and they are all good. This is a small authentic spot and if you love pupusas, you have to stop by and try it.
google avatar

Yelp
Reallllly good food, but yelp says you're close at 7pm and google says 6pm :/ I think you should put your business on grubhub or something, I'd order all the time. You could even have a $20 minimum. I have a baby at home so I don't go out much lol and I'd order probably 2 to 3 times a week
