Yelp
Even though we had plotted out most of our meals in Monterey and Carmel ahead of time, we made it a point to keep a few of them unplanned. Kind of silly, as we had no shortage of places bookmarked to try, but we wanted to be flexible in case anything struck us in the moment. So, as we explored the area around Ocean Ave, we also took stock of our options for brunch. Although, almost as soon as we happened upon them, it didn't take us long to decide on checking out Pangaea.
Between how cute the place looked, the general vibe as we poked our heads in, and how the food looked, there was a lot about Pangaea that we liked. Of course, it also didn't hurt when we saw how many positive review they have on Yelp (hey, still got to check!). As we pored over the menu, the range of options was also impressive - classic sorts of offerings (benedicts, French toast, etc.), lighter fare (avocado toast, parfait, etc.), "East" Breakfast (Kimchi Fried Rice, Fish & Eggs, etc.), and even breakfast cocktails. In short, whether you were looking for something heavy, light, or something in between, there's a fair chance they have something that might interest you.
-- DOUBLE MOCHA
Not too shabby. Not only did it have a good hit of caffeine, but the mocha in this wasn't overpowering nor was it very bitter (neither was the coffee itself), unlike others I've had.
-- ICED WHITE MOCHA
I generally don't go for white mochas, but this actually wasn't too shabby. The taste of the white chocolate in this was more on the subtle side and it didn't taste super rich. A little sweet with the whipped cream, though.
-- HAWAIIAN PLATE - Fried Spam with Rice, Two Fried Eggs, Green Onions, Sauteed Spinach, Sliced Avocado and Pineapple Served with Kimchi and Fresh Fruit
This was disappointing. It's probably my fault for skimming the description, but instead of slices of spam, this just had some chunks of Spam mixed into a block of rice. It also didn't help that the spinach was salty and there was just a few slices of avocado, but why is a Hawaiian plate listed under "East Breakfast"?
-- CRAB CAKE BENEDICT - Homemade Crab Cakes, Grilled Tomatoes, Two Poached Eggs, and Homemade Hollandaise Sauce Served with Country Potatoes and Fresh Fruit
Pretty decent, though it wasn't hard to next to the Hawaiian Plate. On the one hand, the crab cakes tasted great and I liked their Hollandaise sauce. On the other, they also seemed both thin and small compared to how thick and bready the English muffin was.
While we found the food to be somewhat lackluster, especially for the money, at least the service was pretty solid. All of the servers who helped us were friendly and attentive, stopping by to check on us just often enough, and we appreciated that it didn't take long for our dishes to come out. However, it was rather off-putting to see a 3.5% upcharge added to our receipt for paying with a card. To be clear, I understand why businesses do this, but, considering how most people pay with cards, why make it punitive when you can instead just flip it and incentivize people to pay with cash by offering a discount?
Given the mostly positive reviews my Yelp friends have given Pangaea, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't underwhelmed by our experience here. Certainly, there's the distinct possibility that we just didn't get the best dishes that the menu had to offer (and/or that we should have came here for dinner instead of brunch), but I also can't say that there was anything about what we had that would give me confidence that would be the case either. In the event the opportunity came along for me to come back and find out, I wouldn't push against it, but I'd be more inclined to explore the many other restaurants around here instead.
