The Best Restaurants In New Haven

"Pretty much everything on The Pantry's brunch menu is worth it (and so is the 30-minute walk from downtown). Be prepared to wait, but the service is quick and the food hits the spot. Afterwards, take a walk around the upper State Street area to check out all the cute boutique bookstores and bakeries in the neighborhood. " - anne cruz, team infatuation

Simple, homey, down-to-earth breakfast spot for eggs, toast, homefries and pancakes. It's cash-only, so make sure you bring some cash. We got omelettes, 2 eggs any style, eggs benedict, eggs florentine, an egg sandwich, and cinnamon roll pancakes. You can order wheat, white, rye, or English muffin for toast. The omelettes are very customizable, and the toppings were delicious. They have Smuckers marmalade, strawberry jam, and grape jam. There's also maple syrup, Tabasco, and ketchup. The coffee was great. The homefries are very crisp and delectable. We highly recommend the fluffy cinnamon roll pancakes for a sweet treat :)

Google
A little treasure on State St. the host was amazing. Coffee keeps coming without asking. The smoked salmon eggs Benedict are out of this world. My little one had the cinnamon roll pancakes- these should be illegal. Wifey had the Florentine and was blown away with the savory combinations. Price range $20/person. Absolutely will return for another visit.

Google
The food here is amazing and our waitress was awesome. You have to try the grapefruit brûlée and the cinnamon roll pancake!

Google
If you're in New Haven or a student at Yale, you should find a weekend to hike to the Pantry. I'm surprised not more people know about this place. Fresh brunch place!

Google
Cozy, colorful atmosphere and excellent, helpful, friendly waitstaff. The menu has something for everyone, even a delicious (seriously) tofu scramble! Five people in our party and everyone liked what they ordered.

Google
A celiac’s dream diner! While there is no gluten-free bread option, most (if not all) food is prepared on its own grill/pan so there is no cross contact of gluten containing items! Eggs=safe, home fries=safe, bacon=safe. The pic is of the grapefruit brûlée; I’d go back just for this dish. So simple but tastes complex. So tasty. All the food was excellent! I sat at the counter and chatted with most of the staff who were friendly and efficient. Great all around diner!

Google
The waitresses here are so lovely! The service was quick and the food was good! Cinnamon roll pancake was amazing.

Google
Stopped here on a Saturday morning to see an old friend, and every aspect of this restaurant encapsulated that experience perfectly. Friendly waitresses with frequent coffee refills, the morning sun pouring in the windows, and the faint sound of jazz playing from somewhere nearby. A perfect start to a beautiful day.

Yelp
This place hits all the right notes. We got the omelette with bacon, mushroom, bell peppers tomatoes, cheddar, spinach and sausage with home fries and the cinnamon roll french toast. The omelette was a massive amount of food and cooked well. The home fries were delicious but they are the one part of the meal I would say were not with the price. The cinnamon roll pancakes were delicious and very sweet, perfect if you are expecting a sweet treat.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this cute breakfast spot in New Haven! This spot if the definition of no frills, and to the point breakfast dining! The chocolate chip pancakes were delicious! I hear the cinnamon swirl pancake is their signature, though. The Florentine egg Benedict was good but nothing truly spectacular, especially for the price. The fruit was fresh and everyone was super kind and friendly. I really enjoyed the ambience and staff but the food was nothing too memorable. They have all the basic breakfast stables for a reasonable brunch price (some of the ideas seem a bit overpriced for what you're getting but the concept is decent). The home fries and eggs were lacking in flavor but the good was decent overall!

Yelp
The place is very good. Food was delicious and reasonably priced. Highly recommend cinnamon roll pancakes. So good. It's a great brunch spot. Good service. And the place was very cute and cozy. The wait can be long so come here early on weekends. Also cash only.

Yelp
Came back to The Pantry to have their cinnamon roll pancakes again and try a savory brunch option! Great service and the restaurant was almost full on a Sunday at 1:30 PM. Cinnamon roll pancake (5/5): great for anyone with a sweet tooth. I enjoy this even more than cinnamon rolls themselves because of the pancake texture: soft but crispy on the edges. Generous portion size, too! Eggs Blackstone (5/5): so delicious. The potatoes were savory and crisp on the outside (The Pantry did a better job than many other brunch spots I've been to). The eggs were runny and just as we ordered. The English muffin was delightful and well-toasted. Would also order this again!

Yelp
My friend and I have been here several times and each time has been a great experience! The food is so good! Love the pancakes and the coffee too! The only inconvenient aspect is it's cash only. I never have cash on me so I will literally go to the bank and get cash out to be able to enjoy this delicious place. It's worth it.

Yelp
Long waits usually mean good eats and in this case it is VERY true! Delicious eggs Benedict, ridiculously good cinnamon roll pancake, delicious french vanilla french bread toast, and good scrambled eggs, with great homefries. The wait for the food to the table was a bit long too, and our waitress was obviously ready for her shift to end, while the hostess/clearer was super friendly.

Yelp
I have been going to The Pantry for many years. I've waited in many morning lineups to get in. The space isn't very big, but it accommodates quickly. I wouldn't suggest going as early as possible when schools are in session. We lucked out and got right in! FYI it is cash only so be prepared! The staff is always lovely. We've never had anything other than a positive interaction. They are always super attentive. The food is as good as it ever was. The menu was short, but what they have on it they do it right. The fruit is always so fresh. I personally look forward to the grapefruit Brûlée. It is always cut perfectly and is so fresh. The sugar crunch on top is everything I crave when I go! The cinnamon roll pancakes are my next must order. Even if you order something else, grab one to share. The eggs are always perfect. They're a place known for their consistency. Love The Pantry!

Yelp
Classics are always the best. Great menu with the good stuff and great looking omelettes and poached egg options. Good choice if you find yourself in the Ivy League.

Yelp
Stopped here on a road trip for breakfast and it was the perfect little stop! Great food and fast service. A little cramped in there but they were able to fit our party of 6. Cinnamon roll pancakes are awesome! Definitely recommend getting no more than a short stack for one person unless you're super hungry. One of us got a large stack on chocolate chip pancakes and it was way too much food. Cash only!!

Yelp
I LOVE Pantry. I have been here as frequently as one can imagine. Great food, amazing prices, amazing staff, and great vibes. If you are into Jazz, they have a lot of vintage jazz festival posters and play jazz music in the cafe. I would highly recommend this place for a weekend brunch or a place to take your family when they visit from out of town.

Yelp
Food was great. Their hollandaise sauce that they use on their eggs Benedict is off the chain. Good! I've never had hollandaise sauce like that before and I will definitely come back for it again. I ended up ordering a special which was Prosciutto Eggs, Benedict and it was delicious! The prosciutto was really thick, and it was very good! The cook, the staff were great. Friendly talkative, helpful. Stopped here after an appointment at the veterans hospital on the way home. I definitely will be back!

Yelp
Such a warm and homey brunch spot. Waited about 10 minutes for a table for 3. Tried the cinnamon roll pancake (comes as a single, double, or triple stack) and was sufficiently full after having one! The cinnamon and buttermilk taste. One pancake is $5 which is unheard. The eggs benedict was also tasty, and the fruit is your choice (not extra for berries). The homefries were also very well prepared. Good crispy skins without a lot of smokiness. Great spot, fast service. Only note is the place is cash only.

Susan C.

Yelp
Been coming here on and off for over 30 years. Friendly service Great specials. Solid diner breakfast options with some fun twists and always fresh fresh fruit (not the usual sad anemic stuff we've all come to expect in this type of environment) Special note- this establishment is cash only. There is an ATM on site.

Yelp
The pantry was a very cute breakfast spot! It is very tiny so if it gets busy while you're there just have some patience with the servers. The food was great for the price! The only thing I wasn't fond of as far as the food went was the breakfast potatoes but everything else in the pictures was great! The coffee was 10/10.
google avatar

Laura D.

Yelp
We make a point of stopping here for breakfast any time we are in town. Quality of food has always been great and the cinnamon roll pancake is a must!

Ashley S.

Yelp
Cash only w a whopping $3.50 ATM fee. Prices have increased by about 1/3 in the last few years but portions shrank significantly. Almost no salmon or eggs in this $15 meal, all potatoes and bread. Service consists of rude millennials

Yelp
The food was absolutely amazing!!! Exactly what I wanted in the morning... sweet and savory. The scrambled eggs with American cheese and sausage links. The cinnamon roll pancakes- to die for!!!! I can't wait to visit again when I'm back in New Haven. I love the ambiance... divey diner. You wouldn't know unless ya tried.. NOW GO TRY!

Yelp
This place is very small and cozy. They only take cash. But the food and the service are impeccable. The cinnamon pancake is delicious. But my go to is the salmon Benedict with a rasher of bacon and avocado on the side. It's a great place for singles or couples.

Yelp
Stopped here during a road trip on MDW'22. Angie book marked this place and boy am I glad she did, the pantry itself is a super local spot, tiny, cash only and has a TON of personality. The dining areas are adorned with jazz posters and memorabilia. The food itself was great, had an omelette platter which I ran through the garden; mushrooms, spinach, peppers and onions. Their home fries are seasoned well and super tasty, not very salty either! Would definitely come back again if in the area, hopefully they'll accept debit cards by than!

Yelp
YEP YEP YEP. I was visiting from out of town and the cinnamon roll pancakes were soooo delicious. Best pancakes I have ever had - a must try.

Yelp
Cozy breakfast spot. Great for families. Quick service. Their menu offers a good selection of dishes: eggs benedict, pancakes, omlettes, etc.
google avatar

Yelp
The pantry's Cinnamon Bun Pancakes are fantastic, doused in frosting and concentrated with cinnamon. I was very impressed by their amazing flavor and how similarly they tasted to actual cinnamon buns. Though the pancakes weren't incredibly fluffy, they were not any less delicious. While their menu is really small, they are accommodating, and we're able to make a BEC on a bagel, which was good. The inside is fairly small, and looks almost like a diner, but the service was quick.

Yelp
This restaurant is a hidden gem to those outside of new Haven but known to the local university population. It is small in size but great on service and food fantastic. My eggs benedict was delicious. The home fries were flavorful and crispy! The cantalope was perfection and so sweet for late in the season melon! We shared a blueberry pancake that filled the size of the plate and was chock full of sweet blueberries!

Yelp
The Pantry is a breakfast diner that opened in New Haven, Connecticut in 1987. It was founded by brothers Lenny and Artie Fritz. Lenny started his culinary career in the 1970s when he worked at a sandwich shop called Lettuce Please You in Meriden. He graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 1983. He later worked for various hotel chains all around the country. After his father took ill, Lenny moved back to Connecticut and soon began looking for work in New Haven. The Fritz brothers bought a small building which used to house an old-fashioned grinder shop called Ed's Lunch. They turned in into their own café and breakfast joint. Both jazz fans, the brothers decorated the interior with all sorts of jazz memorabilia and always had jazz playing in the background. Lenny did all of the cooking in the kitchen while Artie handled the front. Artie retired in 2011. These days you will usually find sisters Marie and Joanna Despotakis at the Pantry. Marie cooks in the kitchen while Joanna handles the front. My wife and I have been to the Pantry several times over the years. We think that it's easily the best breakfast joint in New Haven. We recently stopped in for breakfast one day when we both had off from work. The interior is small and cozy and there's always jazz playing. My wife ordered a plate with two scrambled eggs, home fries, rye toast, and bacon. I ordered the "Eggs Florentine" (sautéed spinach on grilled English muffin topped with two poached eggs and hollandaise, home fries, and fresh cantaloupe). We also shared a plate of one of the Pantry's most popular dishes: the "Cinnamon Roll Pancakes". To drink, my wife had a tall glass of orange juice and I had a cup of hazelnut coffee. This was another spectacular breakfast experience! We never leave disappointed at the Pantry. We'll keep coming back for years to come.

Yelp
Got the smoked salmon benny and thought it was tok salty. Overall okay, would go again if meeting with friends but not anything to write home about

Yelp
All I say is do yourself the favor and stop into this little quaint breakfast spot and get a decent wholesome yummy breakfast that will not break your budget. The food is always fresh and the staff is always so friendly. If you come on a weekend prepare to stand in line a bit but it moves quickly. Really good spot for breakfast/brunch. And always a daily special on the board. ENJOY!

Karen A.

Yelp
All I can say is wow. This was the best breakfast I have had in ages!! The cinnamon roll pancake was so delicious I can't stop thinking about it. The homefries were perfect, my egg whites were fluffy. The rye toast was unbelievable. The service was outstanding. Perfectly attentive, but not overpowering. We can't wait to go back!!

Yelp
I struggle with the rating for this place because my food was good but the experience and service around it was not. First, COVID distancing was not enforced. Our server didn't wear a mask and let folks sit wherever they wanted. We were run out of the place because a group of people decided they wanted to sit immediately next to us instead of spreading out to any of the other available tables and the workers allowed that to happen. The coffee was weak but my lox scramble was really really good. They don't have real hot sauce (only Tabasco or siratcha) which was a bummer but the food was really good. I had left overs as the serving size was huge and the eggs reheated well. I wouldn't go back on the coffee alone (not good enough for a breakfast spot) but also I wouldn't trust this spot to be super invested in the health of their patrons. This place is also cash only. Not a dealbreaker for me but could be for others!

Semora R.

Yelp
I haven't eaten here in a while but the portions are always filling and I always have leftovers. We stopped in to celebrate my dads birthday and everything was so good. We also were seated quickly which was nice, and everyone was friendly. This is a New Haven staple I've been going to for years. There's no place like it anywhere else in New Haven.
google avatar

Yelp
Coffee is not good here. My friends ordered pancakes and they are not satisfied. Not met the expectations.
google avatar

Elaine T.

Yelp
Salmon eggs Benedict had great hollandaise sauce. The egg yolks were slightly overcooked for my liking but otherwise cooked well. The Benedict as a whole was disappointing as I had several decently seasoned bite pieces, and then the other half was overly salty. I'm thinking it might've been the seasoning in the salmon. The home fried potatoes were cooked well and had a good crunch. The cantaloupe was a good touch to the meal but I thought it was weird for fruit that's normally enjoyed cold as a refresher to be placed on the same plate as my warm food. Lastly- you're not allowed to bring outside drinks in. I thought that was ridiculous esp if they knew they had people waiting outside 25+ minutes to be seated (there's a coffee place across the street so my friends and I just wanted our caffeine to sip on and enjoy while we waited). They offered for us to quickly chug our coffee or hold it on the back for us - which I felt like was weird given that they were trying to respect their other COVID measures. We were also slightly put off by the syrup left on our table as soon as they said we could be seated and when we brought it up to the waitress she didn't seem too happy we did. Overall, the food didn't stand out to me and wasn't worth the experience. I'd consider take out take out as an option and just enjoy it at the comfort of my own place

Qinyi W.

Yelp
I would have left no stars if I could. Biggest problem is that they are CASH ONLY with only a janky ATM in store looking like it's from 1970s. The ATM charges $3.5 transaction fee to the vendor, so apparently they skip taxes and the customers pay for it. The ATM also did not work for us with like 5 cards, the workers could not give us a reason and did not even try, and we had to walk to an ATM 7 minutes away to withdraw cash. Despicable service. Also food was mediocre in flavor, salmon too salty and bread mid quality

Chiang K.

Yelp
The food was quite salty and lacked flavor compared to some other places in NH and the service could be improved.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
We came for the Cinnamon Roll Pancakes...the specialty of the house. We came, we ordered, we devoured! Word of advice...unless you're with a starving teenager..or want to bring some home...the three cake stack is A LOT of pancake. Staff was very friendly and coffee was constantly available!!!
google avatar

Steven F.

Yelp
The staff alone is worth the visit, so nice and helpful. Food was on the same level. Definitely worth the visit if you're in the area.
google avatar

Erica A.

Yelp
What a wonderful little diner! We stopped in for brunch while on a road trip from New York to Boston, and our meals really hit the spot! The serving sizes were huge, and we were big fans of the home fries especially. The pancakes were just alright, we're not sure we'd have them again. All in all, very happy we went here and would definitely return next time we're in New Haven.

Michael H.

Yelp
Good food. BUT. CLOSE. THE. FLIPPING. DOOR. All winter, customers and staff leave the interior door wide open like a god damn barn. A sign the size of a matchbook cover reads "please close door" which the apparently illiterate Yale community does not heed.
google avatar

Ashley R.

Yelp
The cinnamon roll pancakes and French toast were perfect! This place is small and cozy! Makes you feel like you're sitting in grandma's dining room enjoying a delicious breakfast the day after a holiday! We

Yelp
You will not find better fresher, sweeter dessert than The Pantry. From salads and sandwiches to pastries! They are top notch in quality and service. Roasted seasonal vegetables are an ultimate yes anytime I see them. But if you are getting cake, try the chocolate mousse ! You won't regret it. Yelp
My mom and I came here a few months back on a mini road trip to CT. I was really excited to stop by because the reviews I'd seen looked good and I really liked the menu. Unfortunately my experience was disappointing. I ordered our food to get before our journey back home and the girl who s answered was rude. Our food was cold and it seemed like it was just thrown together. My mom was disappointed in the lox because it was too salty and her has browns tasted like it was scraped from the bottom of the pot. I'd say my bacon was good and at least the strawberries were fresh and sweet.

Yelp
LOVE this place. Cute little restaurant with great food and great prices. Staff is always friendly and I can't stop coming back for the cinnamon roll pancakes
google avatar

Sam P.

Yelp
Along with Bella's cafe , these are the two must-try places for brunch and breakfast . It may get hard to get a table on the weekends unless you show up before 10 am. Their cinnamon roll pancakes are unique and very popular but they simply do everything right way. Please be aware that they're cash only
google avatar

Alexis P.

Yelp
We had such a beautiful brunch sitting outside here today! Should have brought the pupper with us but it was such nice weather we weren't sure if there would be outdoor seating available on a Saturday. I think we got lucky with an open outside table! I had the lox scramble with home fries and an English muffin. My boyfriend had fancy French toast with bacon and ham. Everything was delicious. Service was on point and we were constantly checked on and offered coffee refills frequently (much appreciated). The only reason I gave 4/5 is because the place is cash only & I feel that's a bit inconvenient/limiting since I never really carry cash these days. Lucky for me, my boyfriend does and this outing was on him today

Beth Ann M.

Yelp
Tasty breakfast spot! Enjoyed our selection of two (fluffy) eggs with breakfast meat (bacon for me and sausage for my partner), potatoes, and toast. Split the cinnamon roll pancake for "breakfast dessert". Our server was friendly and responsive to requests. Our good came out hot and fresh within an appropriate amount of time. The cafe is cozy and charming with the jazz-themed decor. I would definitely return the next time I am visiting the New Haven area. Note: this is a cash only business with an ATM inside for your convenience.

Yelp
Cute little place situated on the corner of a cute neighborhood. Delicious breakfast food. I had a omelette with spinach, bell peppers, tomatoes, ham, bacon, cheese and home fries instead of bread. My hubby had French toast with sausage links. The walls were covered of awesome Jazz posters. The servers were extremely friendly and prompt. French Toast

Yelp
It's been a min since I've been there and this use to be the spot but boy how things have changed. Nothing we had was how I remembered it and the price was double what it normally would have cost us. Use to be a weekly spot for me for years (decades) but I will not be back. So sad
google avatar

Sipos L.

Yelp
I had the Cinnamon Roll Pancakes and the California Benedict. My friends got the Chocolate Chip Pancakes and The Eggs Blackstone. My favorite was the cinnamon roll pancakes, they were so good! And overall it was just a good vibe. The wall was adorned with Canadian Jazz posters which added to the whole atmosphere of the place! Def give the pantry a visit! :)

Yelp
My friend wanted to grab an early breakfast so he chose The Pantry. This was my first time here and there was a line out the door. Luckily we were a party of two and a table was available. The space is quite small so I'm not sure why parties of 4 or more try to squeeze in here. The service was really good as the staff was pleasant. I got the veggie omelette and home fries along with some hot green tea. My friend got the French toast. The food tasted alright. My omelette wasn't flavorful, but it was just edible. Maybe next time I'll try something else because I'm sure there's a reason there's a line out the door.

Yelp
Food was excellent and served quickly. Staff was nice and accommodating. Inside tables were a bit crammed but it's a tight space with plenty of people wanting to dine in. Cash only with atm on site. Highly recommend.
