"Papas and Beer serves up the kind of old-school American-style tacos everybody craves from time to time. They come overstuffed with marinated meats and a big side of pico, and they’re best done up with guac, something of a house specialty. While the East Side location has an always-festive vibe, the spot on the south side of town is a perfect stopover after a trip to Pisgah National Forest." - Eric Barton

Google
Great spot for lunch- got here at 11:30am and sat at the bar. The parking lot has plenty of parking. It's an older looking shopping center located at the end of the plaza. Chips and bean dip was spot on and the Shrimp Wrap was amazing! Will definitely be back to try dinner.

Google
Food was great! Service was great! Atmosphere is nice! Outside patio seating available!

Google
We enjoyed lunch. Staff is friendly. Food is good. Chips are served with bean dip(it’s yummy). Some $8.99 options for lunch, that’s a great deal !

Enjoyed the food though the service was lacking. Their effort to provide fast service give the customer the feeling of 1. Being pushy, 2. Rude. 3. Not listening. 4. Not being interested in the customers questions or desire. Food was good though. I really the bean dip that comes with the chips and the salsa bar. My friend who can't tolerate spicy foods said the salsas was hot. I'll come back if I'm in the area and would recommend the restaurant.

Google
I love Mexican places with salsa bars which this place had. They also had a good bean dip with the chips that they refilled which I was surprised about. The good portions are huge. I'm glad my wife and I split something and we still had leftovers. For how crowded they were it is a very efficiently run place with the service still being great. The only thing I didn't love is that they charge extra for using a credit card, but it seems like a lot of places started doing that recently.

Google
The food was much better than I expected. I was with a friend and we had a nice time but the servers were kind of odd because they kept coming by and checking looking over at us so we thought they wanted the check but then it turned out the check needed to be paid for at the counter up front. So I'm not sure what does stalker like Behavior was but it wasn't just one of them it was all of them. They even stopped with the cart to clean up in front of us for a few minutes and it was just weird.

A family favorite and a great place to bring guests! The menu has something for everyone and simply …. The food and fast service is just great!

We went out for a birthday lunch, and a group of over 40 people came in after us but ordered before we were ready. Despite this, our food arrived in a timely manner after we placed our order. Our drinks were always full, and the food was absolutely delicious!

Yelp
San Diegians- EAT here!! After a long flight, I just wanted some Mexican food and a margarita. All my reviews out of SD, tell the disappointment in non-SD Mexican food. Not here!!! Chips were light and crispy, they served them with complimentary spicy beans- different...and it was good! The top shelf margarita came with the shot on the side - As. It. Should. Portions were good size, the rice was awesome! I had carne asade enchiladas and it was so good. My husband had the Avocado burrito and was very pleased. We arrived about 10 minutes to 9, and did not realize they were closing soon. The waiter was quick to point that out and was annoyed. We offered to take it to go, but he said go ahead. Not great customer service there, as it made us feel uncomfortable- but the food made up for it. Prices were fair! Advice- the front should have pointed that out before seating us and/or inform the waiter staff to serve with a smile.

Yelp
This place was such a surprise the food was great, they're very accommodating, as we were a group of 6 during busy dinner time but they moved the tables around for us. The inside space was very decorative and festive. The music was a little loud but no complaints. We had the shrimp burrito and it was the biggest burrito I've ever seen and absolutely delicious! Jam packed with perfectly cooked shrimp. The carne asada platter was also cooked exactly as requested and so good! Their chips y guac were awesome and they have a salsa bar which we enjoyed. A few salsas were little on the spicy side but fortunately we love spicy food. Staff was a little slow but the place was also full, so that was understandable. Worth a second visit!

Johnny M.

Yelp
Loved the Mexico City tacos and the draft beer selection is great with lots of taps. The salsa with the chips is something I have never seen before and was really good. Solid California style Mexican food with a nice ambiance.

Brilynn C.

Yelp
Family owned and friendly. Excellent choice for mexican food. Creamy, crunchy, salty, spicy, and fresh. We had a large group and were well taken care of. The large portions of tacos, burritos and enchiladas came out quickly and everyone left happy. I ordered the enchiladas ranchers and absolutely loved the texture of the tortillas. The salsa bar was very fresh and the hot sauce was flavorful. The service was helpful and efficient. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and thought the decor was cool. I would recommend and come back for more.

Yelp
CHEAP AND DELICIOUS! I'm from Arizona, so I consider myself a Mexican food aficionado. This place delivers! I love their salsa bar, and the spicy options are definitely very spicy! I've came twice now and both times have been delicious. The lunch menu is cheap with everything being under $10. Dinner is also very affordable with prices $13 or less for the most part. My favorite dish is the Chorizo Con Papas Burrito, it's topped with queso!!! Their complimentary chips come with bean dip that has a slight kick. Service is good, they check on you often and take your order quickly. Just be aware that you pay up front rather than with your server.

Linda W.

Yelp
Finally an authentic Mexican place to eat! The service was attentive and the people at the front desk were friendly. Thank you for welcoming me to the great city of Asheville, NC!

Judy B.

Yelp
Very tasty Mexican food, and large portions. I had enough leftovers for a second meal ;-) The salsa bar is a nice feature with a choice of salsas, and the totopos (tortilla chips) were nice and fresh. The veggie fajitas came sizzling hot, with a nice side of beans, rice, guac and salad. Atmosphere is good, music a bit loud to my liking but not too loud.

Steve M.

Yelp
We came here with a few friends and we've been here before and liked it then and expect it to be good again. Our waitress was great and they gave us tortillas chips with this wonderful white bean dip . Great to get full on before your meal comes out . Then I had a chicken burrito with rice on the side . Nice portion and I barely finished it . Wife had mahi mahi tacos with veggies on the side which she had enjoyed. No room for dessert but had the giant margarita! Worth a check out .

Charlotte W.

Yelp
Great service and love the salsa bar! Super unique bean dip when you sit down they serve it with the chips. I do wish they explained what the dip was and told us about the salsa bar. Tons of beer and drink options. Service was quick and very good. I had two tacos, one mahi and one steak. There was tons of steak and only one piece of mahi. My sister order the chimichanga and it was okay but a little soggy. Decent prices for the area and food was good

Becky S.

Yelp
We were driving through, stayed overnight nearby and decided to try them for dinner. I have tried many Mexican food restaurants and HANDS DOWN this is the best I have ever had! From the start with the tasty chips and dip, what a change from traditional salsa and so good. The guacamole... mmmm. We had a little bit of everything with the group of 11 we dined with and no complaints at all! The giant margaritas were a very nice addition to the evening too. Great service, affordable and delicious!

Michelle B.

Yelp
We visited this restaurant this week. We got there around noon on Saturday and we were seated promptly and there was not a wait. The restaurant was clean and they had a salsa bar near the front entrance. I ordered the shrimp fajitas. They would have been really good had they cleaned and had they deveined the shrimp. I only ate the ones that looked like they had been cleaned. My partner had the steak fajitas and he said that they were just okay. We also ordered mango and raspberry margaritas which were okay. The server was nice but we probably would not go back.

Kim L.

Yelp
One time eating in the restaurant, we had terrible service. The last 4 to-go orders we've gotten have all been wrong. Example: I asked for no tomatoes and it had tomatoes on it. We had missing items and have received the wrong order. Their service has gone down hill. However when you get the correct food, it's good.

Rachel H.

Yelp
The food was mediocre at best and the service was non existent. The waiter didn't even remove the straws from our cups when taking them to refill them. We had to ask for every little thing

Krista S.

Yelp
If you are in the area, this is a great Mexican restaurant. From start to finish, we were impressed. The service was fast and efficient. The food was served hot and the portions were amazing. My husband ordered the chimi trio and loved it! I ordered the Papas appetizer and it was more than I could ever eat! The shrimp!! Wow!! Wrapped in bacon and grilled. Wow!! Delicious!! The flautitas were also amazing! AND the Salsa Bar was the cherry on top!! Will definitely eat here again on our way through Asheville!

Kyle A.

Yelp
I ordered lunch chicken fajitas which were well priced at $8.99 and came with a huge portion. I really liked it that they brought beans with chips to dip in plus had a salsa bar with five different types of salsa. Usually things aren't hot enough for me but this time not a problem! It was great and the staff worked together well. Good teamwork and plenty of staff - 2019 service in 2022!

Tammy P.

Yelp
We used to love Papa's and bees but the last time we went we noticed they snuck a credit card charge onto our bill with no sign posted. I am so tired of restaurants relying on customers to pay their fees. It's 2024 taking a credit card is the norm and should not fall on the customers that keep you in business.

Casey G.

Yelp
Great find! We were passing through and just happened to stop here. The place was packed and the food was amazing. I ordered corn tortillas and they were accommodating to my request. I'd definitely suggest!

Kevin C.

Yelp
I live in Charlotte and I dream about the Grilled Chicken Burrito at Papa's & Beer. It is one of the best burritos I've ever had. I'm always looking for exceptional Mexican food and I haven't found an equal to Papa's & Beer in Charlotte NC. I hope that one day they will set-up shop here in Charlotte. In the meantime, if your in or passing through Asheville or find one of their other locations, pump the brakes and grab a table or belly up to the bar. It's pure comfort food and you'll walk out stuffed and smiling.

Denise B.

Yelp
The food was delivered very speedy. Presented nicely. Waiter was attentive and nice. I'm not sure what California Mexican is but it was very good. The place was bustling with patrons. We were seated quickly. I had 2 shrimp tacos and they were very good. My husband had a mango margarita and he said it was not as good as the restaurant at home. He was not hungry so he only ate chips, pico & the house bean dip. He did not like the house bean dip. I thought it was good & unique!

Allison M.

Yelp
I used to frequent this place with old coworkers back in the day (2011 ish) and I adored it then. After moving away and then back again, I was excited to experience it once again. The anticipated nostalgia was there but something else stood out more- this place had had a serious update. Wow! Super impressed with the improvements they've made. Ok sure. Weird strip mall and dark window establishment but if you can look past that, you're in for a treat. The building is clean and organized and authentic. Literally everything on the menu is $7.99 or 8.99. My friend got a steak quesadilla and it was huge. I got the salmon salad and there was a lot of salmon. I surprisingly loved the dressing (and Im a dressing snob). Wasn't too heavy or too much. Should have added guacamole but you know.... That's a bit extra. The service is great- we sat at the bar because it was full. They took away plates fast and the food was ready in 10. The margs (I got blended with lower sour mix) were great and $5.99! My cup kept getting bigger even though I ordered the same. Can't complain at that progression. I was very tipsy after three. Luckily it was afternoon so I happy napped it off. Conclusion is that an old love got a revamp and you should definitely pay it a visit. Now I gotta check out tunnel road location.

Melissa L.

Yelp
We came in at about 8:30 PM on a Friday night and were able to sit right at the bar. We were greeted by surprise and the servers with incredible recommendations. There bean dip is incredible. We embarrassingly ordered multiple...no regrets. My friend got the burrito and enjoyed it and I salmon loco and it was amazing! Highly recommend.

Wayne G.

Yelp
Been here a few times over the years and is usually 4+ Stars. Food was good this time, but my server was poor, at best. Didn't get a refill and didn't seem to really care about doing a good job.

Aaron S.

Yelp
Great food and great ambience. Staff is friendly and very prompt with their service. Can't wait to dine again

Cayla M.

Yelp
Delicious! Great service and AMAZING bean dip. Couldn't finish my meal - lots of food - will definitely be back. Our server was kind and energetic and I hope we get him next time!

Carl S.

Yelp
Huge portions !!! I like this location of Papas and Beer. Service is quick, food is really good and fresh and again portions are really generous. Great bang for the buck

Sami H.

Yelp
Absolutely humiliating experience tonight, brought my mom for a late Mother's Day dinner, and get seated towards the bathroom at a booth(we love the booths) and my mom was on her way in as the server put the menus on the table as I walked to the bathroom to go wash my hands. I come back and a couple is sitting at our booth with drinks and food and I'm like sir this is my table and he says they were moved there. He gets up to leave and his wife still sits there. I walk up to the front to get my mother and we leave. Absolutely humiliating experience, no communication between staff and the worst experience I've ever seen in my life. I work in a restaurant and I've never been more mistreated, did NOT feel welcome and left hungry.

Babs M.

Yelp
I thought the Mahi fajitas were unbeatable but I was wrong. Chorizo and steak fajitas Ftw! The grilled food is so tasty, crisped and smoky. The range of salsas are also amazing. If you like Mexican you have to come!

Jenifer R.

Yelp
Best Mexican food I have ever had in my life. So sad I don't live around here. I would seriously come everyday. Prices are so good I was shocked we had huge margaritas tacos, enchiladas and burritos. Service was great, fast and the place was very comfortable. 10/10 i will drive 8 hours just to come again.

Tim W.

Yelp
I took my family out to eat yesterday to Papa's and Beer in Asheville, as was recommended. Upon getting a table, we all go to the restroom to wash our hands before our meal. We come back and there's a huge bowl of guacamole on the table, and hadn't even ordered our drinks yet. We assumed that it must be complimentary as none of us were at the table. We all ordered our meals, which were between $12-15 a piece, three soft drinks at $3 a piece, and then we got the receipt. $75 FOR THREE PEOPLE BECAUSE THE GUACAMOLE THAT WE DID NOT ORDER WAS $12!!! COMPLETE RIP OFF! BEWARE IF YOU EAT HERE, THEY WILL CHARGE YOU FOR ITEMS YOU DID NOT ORDER WHILE YOU'RE NOT EVEN AT YOUR TABLE YET!!! The food is good, but VERY DECEPTIVE SERVICE!

Susie L.

Yelp
I always hate to downgrade a business so I've taken several days to think about our most recent experience. Unfortunately I have come to the conclusion this restaurant has decided to grow in size but suffer food quality as the result. My conclusion was reached not just based on the problems with my dinner but also hearing from husband later in the evening about his dissatisfaction with his meal. We also saw several meals being returned to the kitchen immediately upon the dinners being served. As we were walking out of the restaurant a couple that had been seated at the same time as us but in a different area of the dining room were discussing mentioning a problem with their food when they were going to pay their bill. Specifically there were several problems with my dinner. 1. When cutting into the Chile Relleno I encountered the top strip that had been obviously cut off a cellophane package.. It was about five inches long by about 3/4 inches tall and should have never made it into the finished product. 2. The Chiles were obviously dried peppers that had been soaked to reconstitute them but were extremely tough to cut or chew. 3. The enchilada was almost non existent other than a pile of cheese with a piece of tortilla on top. 4. The whole plate was a cheese lovers delight as the refried beans, Chile Relleno, enchilada were totally covered with cheese. The only relief I had from cheese overload was the Spanish rice. For the amount of time we had to wait to be seated I had hoped the dinner would have been as good as previous experiences. Neither my husband or myself have any desire to eat here on future visits to Asheville, NC.

Bill B.

Yelp
Great food, real Mexican, excellent atmosphere. Best service, outstanding waiter. When in Asheville, this is the stop to make for Mexican Food.

Matthew L.

Yelp
Got 4 beef crunchy tacos and they brought them out food was cold and nasty. The tacos was all mashed up and had to ask for fresh taco shells to eat it and the food was cold and nasty. And they messed up my girlfriends food and I say something about it and the rude lady at the register said o well . The sad thing is that they was our favorite place to eat but the last few months it has been nasty I would not waste your time . The only good thing was the cheese dip . And still made me pay for it would of been better off get taco salad

Eric A.

Yelp
We were craving some Mexican on our recent road-trip, and decided to try this place out after reading some good reviews. It did not disappoint and I would definitely go back again. The bean dip was really good that they brought out with fresh chips, and the salsa bar had a few really good options. I had the grilled chicken burrito based on recommendations I read, and my wife had the mini quesadilla trio. We both were very happy with the selections, and I really want to try the chimichanga trio next time which looked good. For a busy Sat night, we didn't have to wait long and the service was pretty prompt given how busy they were!

Jennie Q.

Yelp
LOVED this place! It was crowded so we ate at the bar. The bartender was funny, fast and knowledgeable. We followed his recommendations and he did not steer us wrong. Large and yummy margaritas. We had the fajitas and burrito. Reasonably priced. So much food we were able to save for lunch the next day. Highly recommend!!!

Sherri J.

Yelp
Have always enjoyed Papas and Beer but today it wasn't as good as it has been in the past! The chips and bean dip were just as good as always! I ordered the fajita burrito and it was not the best. I could not eat the flour tortilla because it was so thick so I opened it just to eat what was inside. It was FULL of beans and very little meat and veggies. The service was also lacking. The waiter took our order, brought the meal and never came by to see how things were or if we needed anything. Very disappointed!

Jacqueline K.

Yelp
The service was terrible and not only was my order wrong but the food made me immediately run to the bathroom. I asked for a manager who was worse than the server was and very very rude!! I wouldn't suggest this papa's & beer to anyone.

Johnny S.

Yelp
Come to Asheville couple times a month. This is a go to spot for me to grab a margarita, Camarones a La Diabla and watch a game. I need say no more. Always consistent and I know what I'm getting.

Kyle D.

Yelp
The food was really good. Portions are enough to share. The salsa bar is also a nice touch and instead of chips and salsa on the table they gave you spicy refried beans and chips, which was different but very good

Kevin D.

Yelp
I used to love this place and have had some pretty good meals here... until tonight. Ordered the beef nachos Supreme with extra cheese, to go. Stale chips, virtually NO cheese, completely flavorless mystery meat, and cost $14 to boot. Not to mention that I was charged $3.50 for a 16oz tea. Not sure what was going on in the kitchen, but I won't be eating here again. Taco Bell would have been a better choice.

Sandy M.

Yelp
Ordered takeout, giving 1 star for friendly staff, and 1 star for the order being ready on time. One taco was left off the order, but the one that was included was so bad we wouldn't have eaten the second one anyway. There was a long hair in an enchilada. Pieces of the rice and beans were very hard. The potatoes in the potato taco were cold, while the rest of the food was cooked to proper temperature. The tortilla chips were stale. The rest of the food was like slop and very bland, and most ended up in the trash. Nothing tasted fresh. After a long day of travel, we are going to bed hungry rather than consume our dinner from Papa's & Beer. Based on the quality of food, it makes my stomach turn to imagine what the kitchen must look like. Could have / should have driven a quarter mile up the street to Taco Bell and have gotten better food at a quarter of the cost. Will never return. Ever.

Mary R.

Yelp
We were tired and wanted to sit down and have something to drink and a snack. We went to Papa's and they did not disappoint! There was a wait for a table but we sat at the bar and they brought us chips and bean dip. We ordered drinks and watched some soccer. They made us feel welcome and didn't pressure us to move to a table or to order other food off the menu. Thanks, amigos!

Deanna W.

Yelp
Hands down, the best Mexican food! Service is extremely quick and attentive. They serve refried beans with their chips instead of salsa, and everyone said it was very good. They listed to the special needs for our food, and everything came out correctly. The portions are huge and the price is very good. We went for lunch, and all the entrees were less than $10. It's very close to the interstate for a quick off and on to eat. (If you're traveling.) Yummy!

Filo L.

Yelp
server she's amazing, excellent, she's very friendly, the only one thing is the poor food, very dry meat, not presentation, it's not California style.

Lara S.

Yelp
Bean dip, different as a starter, check, warm fresh chips, check, Skinny Margarita the size of my head, check... wait there's a salsa bar??? Well hot damn this is different! Salsa's I'd all flavors and heat level that would make Sally from Tijuana Flats slap her own ass. Great add to make their place stand out among many Mexican restaurants in the area. Sizzling Enchiladas (yes they were sizzling!) and Chicken Taco enough for two were very good. Chicken Quesadilla great flavor, pretty basic but the picky teen eater will love it. We all left in a good food coma, check! We will be back to try other unique dishes on the menu.

Kylie H.

Yelp
Just came here to grab a quick bite and it was great. Our server was super attentive and kind and the service was quick. I had the Camarones Al Mojo de Ajo and the sauce was so garlicky and delicious I could've drank it. My fiancé had the ~famous~ torta and cleaned his plate. Reminded me of the food I would get in Corpus Christi when I grew up -- would definitely recommend.

Lee M.

Yelp
Really good frozen margs here. My wife is always going here with her friends and I decided to join last weekend. Great drink specials and decent service.

Hunter S.

Yelp
Big plates and you can order 32 oz beers which is awesome. Ive gone to a few locations and none have disappointed.

Zachary L.

Yelp
Food slaps. Margs are great. Staff is friendly and fast. Love quick seating at the bar.

Amy N.

Yelp
Awesome service and great food. Large portions and delicious salsa bar. You will not leave hungry!!

Loren H.

Yelp
Isabella was our server & was amazing! She was so kind & genuine! If you're going to eat here, make sure you ask for her! She is an excellent server & will make your visit one you will not forget! She is the one with an infectious smile! The strawberry basil margarita was excellent! Food was delish!
