Papi Tacos & Churros Review - Jefferson Park - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Papi Tacos is one of the newest taco spots in the entire city, but it only takes one bite of their goat birria to realize they’re on to something major. While you can come to this tiny taco window in Jefferson Park and load up on their fantastic tacos dorados, that would be a mistake. Go for the OG Plate instead, which gets you a taco dorado, well as a goat birria-filled mulita, quesataco, quesadilla, and consomé all for $11.99. They also make churros that should not be missed. photo credit: Stan Lee" - Brant Cox

I had a good experience at Papi Tacos & Churros. One of the standout features is that they offer “HALA” meat, which is a great option for Muslims looking for Mexican food. The dishes were decent, but I found them a bit overpriced considering the quality of the cooking and the flavors. Overall, it’s a nice place to try, especially if you’re in the mood for halal Mexican cuisine.

*FOOD* * Churros (Lechera)- $5; 3/10 honestly tasted like it was done days ago. the outer layer was a soft and rubbery texture but not toasted or most importantly crunchy. the inside was just gooey. the lechera topping which cost an additional $1 kind of saved it but it was overall a easy, especially the price where i could go to a food truck and get 10 big churros for the same price ... *O.G Plate (Steak)- $18 Taco; 7/10, nothing groundbreaking but also nothing too bad Queso taco; 7.5/10, the cheese was pretty stringy and warm, after a while it becomes a plastic like structure Molita; 7/10, same as the queso taco, but flat .. Quesadilla; 7.8/10, the biggest one so far, has loads of delicious charcoal steak and cheese to fill you right up Consomé; 8/10, only downside is it's given in a tiny cup but the consistency is great with the tacos Green Salsa; 9/10, good amount of spice and not enough to have you drinking water after every bite * Agua de Jamaica- 7.8/10 ~$5 nothing too bad or too good, just a refreshing drink *AMBIANCE* has mexican music constantly playing, there's also seating outside if you want more fresh air BUT if you're inside be prepared to swap flies from your food *SERVICE* average, you can tell some employees are just trying to get the day over with but i personally don't mind because i can see where they're coming from. took about 5 minutes to get the food which was very convenient

Google
It's such a great find for us! It's hard enough to find halal food already, and usually there isn't a lot of variety for us but to find an authentic mexican restaurant, and that also HALAL was absolutely amazing. We ordered 5 OG Plates - 4 Beef Birria OG plates with everything and 1 Carne asada OG plate with avocado. Everything was 10/10 👌👌👌👌👌 We also ordered Churros,(fyi it takes a looooong time for the churros to come out), we took them to-go & ate them in the car so I do not have pictures of those to share. But they did feel like worth the wait! Perfectly crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. 10/10. Generously coated in cinnamon sugar and topped with whatever you choose, but my personal favorite was Dulche de leche, and you can never go wrong with Nuttela. (Please don't get chocolate!,not great) They do not have a restroom, which is unfortunate for a restaurant that claims to be world famous. They do have parking on 1236 4th st. Also, only one person was frantically taking order, serving, and cleaning as well, which kind of resulted in delayed service. But I guess I just got them on a bad day. The staff is very friendly otherwise. Definitely visit them if you are in Santa Monica and show them some love!!

Google
For a late night taco, this place hits the spot. It’s heavily greasy, cheesy, and satisfies a craving, but i wouldn’t give it best taco award. The flavors are there, it just didn’t wow me. Delicious for a quick bite, but it’s not cheap!!! The service was outstanding, it was pretty busy, but there was one lady who really made our experience lovely. They ran out of churros and we were so bummed, after we dined, we left. She came chasing us down the street because someone had already gotten their churro. Would give her 6 stars, it was the best churro. Would come again for the churros (they are gluten free! Yahoo!)

Wow, these are some seriously delicious tacos and burritos. As someone who grew up in San Diego and moved LA five years ago i still find it very hard to find Mexican food that tastes as good as back home but I would say that Papi’s is a LA spot that is definitely worth visiting. Everything that we tried was honestly surprisingly good and the churros were also fairly good as well. I have had better churros recently so would say that their savory items are the main reason to visit. It can get quite busy depending on the time of day, but usually your order is made very quickly. The portion sizes are large and hearty too. We chose to do takeout for our meal so I cannot speak to in person dining. Pricing is fair and I definitely was not hungry after finishing my meal. Since it was our first time we chose to do a few different items. We ordered the OG Burrito and the OG Plate because they both seem to be the most popular items ordered. The burrito was honestly terrific and the birria inside was juicy and very flavorful. I especially liked the coating on the tortilla and the ratio of ingredients inside it was exactly what I expected. The OG Plate was also very good and I especially liked the street sized versions of all the different items that they offer. I would highly recommend and I plan to be back in the future to try more items.

Google
The food is 10/10! The dorada tacos are great and the quesatacos even better. The birria with consome is incredible. great carne asada. However there isn’t a bathroom. Surprising because they can seat around 60 people so I thought they would have one. They have a “no public restroom” sign but they don’t have a customer restroom. I took a group of family visiting from Spain there for lunch and we had to take turns going to Chipotle (which staff said was the closest public restroom) to use their restroom. I didn’t want to pretend to be a Chipotle customer so I walked a block further to the Promenade public restrooms which ended up being in a parking structure and were closed for cleaning so I ended up at Chipotle anyways. All in all go there for the food but it’s not great to eat there.

Google
Fantastic authentic Mexican street-style food. The tacos are on the smaller side, but incredibly flavourful, and honestly probably the best I have ever had. Love the artwork on the wall! I would totally come back again! Highly recommend!

Google
I've never had a Ramen dish before from a restaurant. This dish had me sold on my first bite, the flavor was unbeatable! Highly recommend to try this place out if your in Santa Monica.

Yelp
The tacos are outstanding--each one is packed with flavor and made with fresh ingredients. I tried the birra taco plate it was perfectly seasoned and had just the right amount of toppings and of course the dipping sauce is not too spicy but has a kick! Now, let's talk about the churros. They are the perfect ending to your meal--crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, rolled in cinnamon sugar and served with a delicious chocolate dipping sauce.

Yelp
Tiny tacos, mid flavor...decent consome... Not much to really say about this place except I left hungry because the portions were small and I did not want to waste any more money on the food there. It wasn't the worst place to get tacos...that's reserved for New York, but it wasn't the best. I should have gone down the street to the Cantina on the Promenade.

Super delicious tacos, burritos, and homemade churros. Bench table seating and friendly staff

Yelp
I was craving some tacos and I found this place with great reviews on Yelp! We decided to give it a try and it didn't disappoint! We got the OG plate, which came with a variety of tacos, quesadilla, mulita, and birria consome! They also have KETO tacos here, which is amazing!! It's always hard finding keto food items anywhere. Food was fresh and the birria was amazing!! They have delicious spicy salsas too!

Yelp
Took a day trip out to Santa Monica, and decided - what better way to enjoy the beach vibes than having tacos nearby? This location is easily walkable if you're parked near Third Street Promenade and don't like the food options along the street. It has plenty of bench seating inside and out. I ordered 4 Tacos Dorados (2 pollo and 2 carne asada), while my partner got the OG Ramen and churros (which we shared). I loved the slight crunch to the tortillas, as well as how fresh and flavorful the meat and sauce combo were. The churros were a nice finish as a light treat and a little sugar on top. My partner enjoyed his birria, but said the texture of the noodles was iffy. Overall, a great local pick to try! :)

Yelp
The food is delicious! We tried the Birria Tacos with the Consume! Omg, the flavor was bold and packed of juicy goodness! We also had the Carne Asada and Pollo Asada tacos, which were good as well. The fresh juices brought balance to the meal. The price was decent as well for street tacos. The area for improvement with this location is with the wait time, from the time we ordered it took about 25 mins to get our food and it came out lukewarm not hot. Additionally the location wasn't very busy when we ordered. However, we would certainly return. The vibe was pretty chill, wall art and ceramic pieces highlight the establishment, making for a photo worthy moment.

Yelp
I ordered the OG Plate and it was selection of different tacos. The tacos included are: Taco, Quesataco, Mulita and Quesadilla. They were pretty good, but they didn't wow me. It came with a Consomé. The Consomé  was piping hot and delicious. The churros were very good especially with the side of a Dulce de leche sauce. I really enjoyed them.

Yelp
"Total is $XX.XX, can you complete the screen". And then you see the much talked about Tip page, for completing the task of taking your order, and putting the order on the counter for you to pick up and go. So can we agree that this tip is basically for completing the order taking process? What if that goes wrong? Food missing, or food made to stay in, instead of order to go? No matter, we paid again for the food missing from the first order, packed up the order to go and made it home. We'll talk about this Tip page later. We got the OG plate combo with chicken, and I would say it is good. The chicken was moist, but not much of a flavor. So you got to pack it with the sauce and dip. That made it worth the drive. We finally got to try this Ramen fusion with consume that is popping up in places. We expected a bowl full of flavor, but the bowl seemed like a fusion version of meat and potato. And we're talking frozen dinner meat and potato. Not much flavor, just heavy meat and some starch. This one would take a lot more sauce and flavor to make it worth trying a second time. So this was my first and last time with Birria Ramen. Some fusions just don't work. The place was kind of cool for a friend's hangout, although we didn't really eat there. But it is worth an afternoon drive close to the beach if you want some decent+ tacos.

Yelp
Best birria in LA very recommended!! Also the churros with cajeta topping are the best

Yelp
This is a no brainer! We love a couple blocks away thank goodness! My husband comes here often to get tacos and quesadillas. He never misses a chance to order fresh made churros! We are so picky. We came for lunch on a Wednesday after the SM Famers Market. Lots picnic bench seating indoors and outdoors. Outdoor tables have umbrellas. Services was quick and friendly! It's a nice open space restaurant. Small menu to choose from, but it's all you need. Tacos, burritos, quesadillas and Birria Ramen! It's all so delicious and flavorful. I also love that it's not too salty. We ordered: Birria Quesadilla Churros Cold Horchata to drink Reasonable pricing, so flavorful and it will fill you up! You'll leave the place happy and wanting to come back for more!

Yelp
I had been craving churros for quite some time and I was visiting my boyfriend in Santa Monica so I was looking up places to go and Papi and up. I'm so glad I found this place! The churros were exceptional and paired with ice cream was really a nice treat. We also had a carne asada burrito which also was really good! The atmosphere was fun with a spanish beach vibe and we were able to order and eat in a decent amount of time. The walls had Spanish tile and brick so it looked really nice. the service was fast and friendly and I will definitely be back!!

Lucky C.

Yelp
Delicious and service was amazing! Staff are so sweet and friendly and the restaurant itself is well decorated and a great vibe! Fun place with delicious food :)) burrito was 100/10
google avatar

Yelp
Quick review This place does 2 meats, but man do they do them right! You get the option of delicious slow cooked birria or chicken. I opted for both obviously. Their burritos are a very nice size, filled with generous servings of meat. The salsa kicks it up a notch and enhances the burrito but still lets all the other flavors shine through. I ordered them to go and was only going to take "one bite". Yeah, it was so good that I ate it there. Immediately. This was perfect since it comes semi-wet. Not completely drowned in sauce but enough to make it difficult to eat if it's not consumed immediately.

Jp G.

Yelp
Great food I got the OG RAMEN, It was amazing!!! It would be hard for me to get anything else, but my god I'll be back
google avatar

Kayla S.

Yelp
I cut my burrito in half so that I can taste the inside of it and the other half is in the fridge so let's start with the meat. The beef has no flavor but the burrito if you eat it all together it brings the flavor but if you eat the meat, it has no flavor I had got two tacos. The chicken was fine, but the other taco was kind of hard well the Shell will I go again. Yes it's edible
google avatar

Elaine C.

Yelp
Atmosphere: good vibes, music isn't too loud, pretty modern and clean vibes with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Food: We got the watermelon aqua fresca and OG plate. The food came out pretty quick. They were all so good, I would recommend eating the quesadilla first bc it can kinda get soggy after all the salsa, consume splashing, and lime. The crunchiness was so perfect. I would recommend getting it. Aqua fresca was a nice splash to cool down the spice. It's not super spicy but I'd say prob have something to drink in case you accidentally choke.

Yelp
I've had takeout from Papi's before but had never been to the restaurant. I was craving tacos and decided to drive all the way from Westchester to Santa Monica for a late night craving. I arrived about 925 on a Friday night. There were a few people waiting for food, but they were already starting to put chairs away for their 10 o'clock closing. I ordered an OG plate Coke and two orders of churros to go. After waiting about 10 or 15 minutes I was given my order. When I got home and opened my package I realized that they left the churros out of my order. I called and it was about 9:55 but no one answered the phone. I left a message and let them know that they forgot my churros, and I wanted to come the next day to get the churros I paid for. I left my phone number, but never got a call back. I did not feel like fighting Santa Monica traffic on a Saturday to go get churros. I was really disappointed that they rushed my order and forgot my churros. I didn't come in there at five minutes to closing time and there weren't a lot of people waiting. OG plate with delicious with the consommé as I expected - no complaints there. I was just disappointed at my experience and decided to just let it go. Not sure if I'll go back.
google avatar

Emily N.

Yelp
I got the OG Ramen and churro and it was tasty! The beef ramen broth is flavorful but also not as heavy as I expected and the churro was crunchy on the outside and chewy and soft on the inside!
google avatar

Angela Marie M.

Yelp
Their tacos are not that good. I feel like you can get better food from the local street vendors. I personally was not a fan of their tacos by themselves, I had to down it by sipping the cosome. Maybe I should try the churros next time because those look good. But the savory food was definitely mid
google avatar

Jesus G.

Yelp
The churros here were very good! Fresh and crispy and adding the Nutella topping made then perfect. I didn't get to try their food but they have a great selection of relatively cheap street tacos. The churros were more expensive than the food itself but they're worth it! Service was over the counter like fast food and it was efficient. The location was beautifully decorated with a Mexican theme.

Yelp
Papi Tacos in Santa Monica, CA. One of the best tacos I've had in Cali ...and that's a major statement to make. @papitacoschurros has a simple yet delicious menu with three choices of taco, burrito and a plate. The service was super fast and inside is really really cute. Papi Taco features their 16 hour cooked beef birria, authentic polo asado and their churros. Insta: @thehungrysw

Yelp
Craving tacos? This is the real deal. Simple, delicious, friendly. We had the chicken and the steak tacos. So fresh and yummy! Go!

Yelp
Delicious, my husband who is picky also enjoyed it. I didn't like the lady screaming out orders, couldn't enjoy my food completely or talk to my husband

Yelp
LOVED our visit. Our party tried the Birria OG Ramen Bowl, Birria Burrito Bowl, Birria and Chicken OG Plates along with the horchata and hibiscus agua frescas. We loved every bit of our meal here. The cashier is so helpful -- I forgot to ask her name but she made ordering the right things for each of us. Their consomé is great -- not too much fatty but lots of flavor. There is plenty of seating if you're dining in -- it's casual but clean.

Yelp
Fantastic tacos, good flavors , great atmosphere. recommend this spot if you're craving some tacos

Yelp
My favorite tacos in the world so far are sold here at Papi. I was here on a 7 day trip and came back 3 times. I got the birria taco and smoked chicken taco, both with no onions. SOOOOOO DELISH!!!!! Perfect flavors, so much flavor, ask for green sauce if you like it SPICY! Cheap two. $3 per taco. The service is quick, they aren't overly friendly but they don't need to be bc that taco is that good!! Watermelon Agua Fresca was delish!
google avatar

Jetrina M.

Yelp
We came here for dinner on a Friday evening around 7 pm and it was not too busy. There is both indoor and outdoor seating and there is a giant window that opens up for allow for a lot of space. We ordered the OG plate and OG burrito - both with Birria. The burrito was massive and I needed a fork and knife to eat it because the bottom was a little soggy. Definitely get the burrito if you are looking for a big and filling meal - it could feed 2 people. The plate was a nice sampler of their different menu items but overall felt like a smaller portion than the burrito. Both came with consommé and hot sauce; I was a big fan of the hot sauce for some kick because otherwise it was not very spicy. The meat was juicy and tender. There was a sign on the wall that said parking available but we had already parked on the street since we weren't sure.

Yelp
Just had these on a rainy day! My go-to order is the quesataco with birria meat + consome broth to dip the tacos in. They do a great job balancing a crunchy shell with hot, soft cheese. Unique wall art interior, and the fairy lights give a food market feel.
google avatar

Megan C.

Yelp
OMG! This burrito was SO good! The birria was so tender and dipped in the consumé was DELICIOUS! This picture does not do it justice because the inside of the burrito was absolute beauty. 10/10 would recommend, and will be trying their other locations as well! Also! It's halal!

Agustin C.

Yelp
food was very good,I would recommend the quesadilla. Great customer service and friendly staff.

Yelp
Food is excellent! Very flavorful and delicious. However, the lady at register was rude. She didn't make you feel comfortable at all. She took a while to take our order eventhough there were no other customers in the restaurant. And she was on her cellphone when we were trying to order. She lacks any concept of customer service.

Ivan G.

Yelp
Food was ok. After spending 60 dollars for 2 ppl. They denied to use a bathroom. The employee told us that they didn't have one? How is this possible

Yelp
Found this birria taco shop on Yelp as we were in the Santa Monica area. Great location at the very end the 3rd street promenade with metered street parking. Menu was simple and smart. Service was fast and friendly. Food was fresh and tasty. Birria was nicely seasoned. We dined outside along Wilshire Blvd, people watched, and enjoyed another beautiful day in So Cal! Salud!!
google avatar

Yelp
Definitely a great place to go for a small bite. Tacos were delicious. My favorite is the Ramen with Beef
google avatar

Oren H.

Yelp
Papi definitely know how to make good tacos and churros. Super super yummy and the salsa that comes with it was perfect spice and flavor. The food was so good that it ended up in my stomach before I was able to snap a picture. I ordered the OG taco plate which allowed me to try it all. Loved ALL of them and Sabrina at the register was super helpful and nice!! The mural on the wall was also super cool. Will go back for sure next time I am in the area. Hopefully next time my stomach will permit me to take a photo for y'all.

Best brriaa burritos ever we had. Very fresh watermelon Fresca. Very clean place. Definitely recommended

Yelp
Overall: 4.6/5 (dine in) Papi Tacos & Churros is a cute little shop across from the Santa Monica Promenade. Everything is street parking. We went on a Sunday around 4:30 PM so we were lucky to find a parking nearby. The menu is simple and on the wall behind the cashier. Beef Birria OG Plate ($16): For the OG plate, you can choose either beef Birria or pollo asado. They don't let you mix & match. I got the beef birria which was tender and delightful when dipped in the consome. They gave a generous portion as well so I was stuffed after this plate and skipped dinner. The best thing about this plate was the consome. It's so hard to find a place that makes great consome. Usually they're too light for me but this one had perfect flavors. Pollo Asado OG Burrito ($13): This burrito was huge and came with a side of consome. It was full of flavors as well. The pollo asado was not dry & much better than expected. I do think it's a good idea to split these two items which is what I did with my friend. At the beginning, I liked the burrito more but after a few bites, I think I liked the beef quesadilla more. If I had all beef or all chicken, I would get sick of it half-way through.

Yelp
Great tasting tacos and burritos . The ambience is that of a fast food kind of place. There is eating ouside, which is nice .
google avatar

Ryan T.

Yelp
Very solid birria de res tacos. Papi's is a taqueria chain specializing in birria de res (beef birria) with locations ranging from Hollywood to Santa Ana. This location is right next to 3rd street at Santa Monica beach with really great vibes. The prices are pretty reasonable too. While there is better birria in LA, Papi's is a very solid choice if its the closest one to you.
google avatar

Yasmine S.

Yelp
Papi Tacos & Churros was introduced to me by a friend of mine. Parking might be a bit hectic at this location so, just a heads up. The food was really good. Very flavorful and filling. I would definitely recommend adding avocados to what ever you order here it will not disappoint. I love the fact that they have a desert option for after your meal as well. Everyone here was super nice and helpful and the vibe in the restaurant was lively. Ps, there is indoor and outdoor seating here.
google avatar

Yna B.

Yelp
So good! Loves the consome and the options to try all of them! The OG plate was really good, the servings are a bit small but still worth it!
google avatar

V. R.

Yelp
Great food, service, ambience, and best of all, halal. They even have a private section upstairs.

Ben L.

Yelp
These street-style morsels are uber-authentic! Freshness and taste is definitely its strong points here. Churros are obviously insane. Unfortunately service is not a strength. The cashier is the server is the one also preparing the food. How about having a dedicated cashier?

Melissa B.

Yelp
We were a bit disappointed with the initial service at the restaurant. As Hispanics visiting a "Mexican restaurant," we expected a warm welcome but felt a bit ignored by the cashier. However, we decided to give the food a chance, and we were pleasantly surprised. The tacos and birria ramen turned out to be delicious and made up for the initial lack of hospitality. We hope that the restaurant can work on improving their customer service to ensure a better experience for everyone despite the color of their skin.

Yelp
Papi Taco and Churros blew my expectations out the water. The Og plate was great I live that it comes with many different options that are beyond tasty. The birria was cooked to perfection was juicy and tender at the same time every bite had so much flavor. The Consome was great nice template awesome flavor and I couldn't get enough. The Lemondae was good but it wasn't the stand out. The churros were great it was little too cold to get Ice cream with them but they were still good. They were was plenty of space to eat and a great vibe there . 5 stars for sure

In short this place is good for tourists staying nearby or if you're in need of drunchies from a day hang at the bungalow. It tastes ok. Not to mention it's tiny portions and overpriced. That too I got a combo plate. Otherwise, you can get better Mexican food and at a better price at pretty much any taco stand or Mexican street cart
