LA’s Five Best Khachapuri, a Cheesy, Eggy Boat of Dough | Eater LA

"This multi-unit, made-to-order operation produces boat-shaped Adjarakan khachapuris in several modes; the original pairs mozzarella with two eggs, and add-ons like jalapeños and chives can be requested to brighten the flavors. A tomato-scramble variant swaps in scrambled eggs and tomatoes, and the jalapeños are credited with tying everything together inside a nicely browned, light and fluffy crust. There are also over-the-top sweet versions topped with Nutella and fruit or Ferrero Rocher chocolates." - Alejandro Benes

Everything here is always fresh and absolutely delicious. The mini perashki with potatoes are my favorite — they’re perfectly golden on the outside and have just the right amount of filling to make them super satisfying. Their ponchiks are incredible too, light, fluffy, and filled with just the right sweetness. You can really taste the quality and care they put into their baking. This place has quickly become my go-to whenever I’m craving something fresh and homemade!

I can't rate food because I didn't get any. Today While I was on the way for work I was looking for a bakery and after checking few places in the area something about this bakery caught my attention. Once I parked , I walked along the sidewalk and looks like everything was closed but luckily wasn't. After checking few items I told the lady what I wanted, I ended up getting a small bread, it was delicious, small but tasty $ 2.50. I believe it was a Cheese borek, and is not about the quantity but the quality. I was actually thinking about Napoleon but I don't like crumbs falling around the car while driving, I believe Napoleon is best if it's enjoyed at home with a warm cup of coffee. However I was really thinking to get a khachapurri for my lunch but the problem is that they don't have , we have to let them know like 15 or 20 minutes in advance so they can make it for u, including some other meals from the menu, if anyone is interested make sure to give them a call ahead Everything looks delicious, including the pastry which is like baklava and some other with pistachio crumbs

My first time visiting this bakery decided to try their churros. I purchased three of each flavor, three original, three strawberry, and three oreo. They are priced at three for 9.99, which was okay. The original churro lacked the cinnamon flavor for me, the strawberry-filling one was good, and the oreo also lacked flavor in my opinion. The staff was friendly and prompt to assist me. The place is clean and nicely decorated, they have sofas so people can sit and enjoy their treats.

Google
I have come to this place time and time again anad each time the service has gotten worse and the food has gotten horrible, i was there on saturday i picked up two Adjarakan one of them was basically raw the bread was still doughy( even though I asked it to be well done) and the other one had an egg shell in it. They did not give me the salt mix and when I asked for it the front desk lady was so rude and just looked me in the eyes and said they dont have it. For $30+ i would expect a better treatment and actually cooked food without any egg shells in it.

What's not to love, everything is high quality and super tasty. The peraskis and ponchiks are my favorite. My BF loves the boat. Must try everything on the menu. Deliciousness 🤤

Google
Been a loyal customer for years and every time the customer service gets worse! Today, I walked in and the first thing the cashier told me was: “whatever it is, it will take 30 minutes” I re-iterated, but I haven’t placed my order. My order is very simple… yeah! Yeah! It’s 30 minutes! Now, as a customer, I drove 40 minutes to get here and I’ve sent customers your way… I can wait, but the attitude, the absence of care or even the tone she used were very rude. I think, as much as I love ponchiks, this was my last time here!

I bought this on Sunday evening, an hour ago, it tastes awful. Seems they hold it in the fridge for couple of days. Went directly to the trash. It doesn’t taste bad, it is not even eatable. So disappointing

Google
Unique Bakery - definitely worth visiting! Randomly found this place on a Google Search while in Northridge, CA. Upon arrival, we were greeted by what appeared to be (key point - our perspective) a somewhat short customer greeting. The food on display looked like it had been there for some time, and we almost left! The shop was really unique and we looked around at all the different things it had to offer, and noticed that some individuals were sitting and waiting, while others were coming in and picking up orders. There was a constant flow of customers and calls coming in, so we figured there has to be something special about this place. We decided we were going to try the custard filled donut (not the proper name, sorry!) And the lady behind the counter told us it would be ten minutes. I was like, "hold on, are you making this fresh?" Her response, "yes..." So I asked her, "do you make everything fresh??" And she said, "yes, except for some of the pre-packaged items". Well then my friends, this was a game changer for us! We ended up ordering several items including a meat stuffed Flatbread, a pizza flavored savory pie like item, the custard filled donut as well as a regular donut. They have several very well spaced out tables, all with unique coffee table books and a beautiful mural on one wall. The entire vibe was unique and funky. All the items we tried were delicious, and we will definitely be going back! Another thing to note was that they used fresh oil to deep fry their food... I can tell when places keep re-using old oil. With old oil items are darker and the oil seeps into the food and you can taste it. We the items we bought from here, the oil was FRESH!

Yelp
Best pirozhki in LA! They make them fresh as you order. They deep-fry them and what you get is a culinary masterpiece. The dough and the filling are delicious and melt in your mouth. My favorite pirozhki are with cabbage and potatoes. Both kinds are very slightly spiced and salted. The dough and the filling are temperature hot, tender and delicious. The potato ones resemble the softness and texture of yummy mashed potatoes. The cabbage ones taste like the cabbage was slightly sautéed before being deep-fried in the dough. Both kinds are incredibly good. The spot itself is more of a to-go spot, with only 2 tables available for dining in. The service is friendly and very efficient. They take your order and the cooking process starts. Will definitely come back for more pirozhki!

Yelp
Feeling like a carb-y day so Armenian baked goods it is! Went with a box of 14 beef Perashkis. Think empanadas but much softer and fluffier. They were stuffed with a good amount of ground beef. They also included some seasoning salt on the side to sprinkle on. Other popular ones are potato and cheese. We also ordered some lahmajun (Armenian pizza). Thin layer of dough with ground meat, herbs, spices, and tomatoes. Squeeze a little lemon on top to jazz it up. We also ordered some mini ponchiks (think filled donut). We ordered filled with custard and they were yummy little bites. Do note that the ponchiks are best eaten right away when hot/warm, saving these for the next day just doesn't work. Texture of the dough changes. They have a lot of fillings for the ponchiks so take your pick!

Yelp
Didn't know about this place. Basically wanted something sweet and it was literally around the corner from where I was. Popped in for a browse just to see what they had to offer. It's a cute little cafe bakery. Lots of seating with the lounges. Like a coffee shop and bakery. What they had in the glass counter all looked great. There's also pre packed pastries on hand. I picked up two different cheese rolls. One, your classic cheese roll with the glazed on top and the other was a cheese puff pastries. Both were really nice. Packaging is quite pretty. A pretty nice spot for international pastries in the valley.

Yelp
My buddy came over with these Arminian Pastries for my house warming party. I don't think I had one cuz my guests ate them all. Found it in Northridge and absolutely loved it! They're so different than American Pastries. Love the change for once. I'll be going back. The service was amazing also! Btw every pastry is made fresh and fried on the spot. At least the day I went. Make sure you wait 5 minutes before you take a bite or you'll get burnt.

Yelp
The young man helping was knowledgeable and helpful explaining the different dishes, and the decoration is cozy, but those are the only pros. I tried the custard ponchik, cheese perashki, mushroom perashki, and spicy cheesy greens. It took about 30 minutes for our order to be ready and I wasn't really impressed with anything. It's my first time trying all three dishes, so I have nothing to compare them to to confirm whether I even received what I ordered. The mushroom perashki and spicy cheesy greens tasted exactly the same. The custard ponshik was primarily dough with about a teaspoon of custard in it. I did enjoy the perashki, though.

Yelp
I have been wanting to try these for a while and finally got some yesterday. This bakery is known for fresh Armenian donuts called Ponchiks. If beignets and Beard Papa's had kids you get Ponchiks. These are so good! I love how they were not greasy or overly sweet. You cannot eat just one. I got the custard filled this time. Will get Nutella next. Definitely give them a try.

Yelp
it's been almost 4 months and never got credited , you cheat on people, to make an extra buck and that is not right!! i will never ever order nor visit another one of your stores.

Yelp
I order piroshki for pick up and was so delicious. Costomer service is much better must try

Gary Y.

Yelp
Been ordering from here for a while now....always fresh and consistent taste! The ponchiks are the best, the dough to custard ratio is on point unlike some other places where its all dough and not enough custard. 10/10

Yelp
Love the place it's chill .. ambiance is good. Service is amazing food is really good. Highly recommend the beef and chicken empanada

Yelp
Wait, but how did it take me this long to try Papillon?! The Ponchik is divine and the variety is heavenly... I recommend: Nutella Nutella and Oreo Oreo Raspberry Dulce De Lèche Custard Each is about $4. Great for a half dozen bites. More than enough for 1-3 to share. I've also tried the Cheese Roll, but I wasn't the biggest fan. It's much thicker than the comparable from Porto's. I ordered for delivery so I can't speak to ambiance and seating.

Yelp
Guys I absolutely Love Odrin! She was incredibly kind and patient with me while I indecisively chose what I wanted. All of the desserts and food looked incredible so it took me a while to decide and she explained what it all was with a kind attitude. The food was so delicious and I will absolutely be back for more! It came out hot and freshly baked. Thanks guys!

Yelp
I came to this bakery based on its overall good reviews. I needed a desert or some pastries to gift a friend that had recently lost her mother. I was looking for some delicious Baklava and other Armenian dishes I could gift my friend during her difficult time. The sales associate helped me with picking a couple of their top sellers. She wrapped the items up very neatly. My friend was so happy! She said everything was so delicious and plentiful. I'm so happy I purchased from this location.

Yelp
Ponchik are delicious! empanadas were okay we did chicken, beef and spicy pork! But customer service is not great! The lady helping was rude and unhelpful as it was the first time going in and ordering. Asked if she had a sample of the Halva and with a great amount of attitude she said no and seemed bothered. Will have to check out and maybe order from the other locations.

Leanne G.

Yelp
I used to love this place but lately they've been going cheap, the ponchiks used to ooze filling of Nutella or cream but ever since they added the Dubai ponchik, the product has become worse. It's basically a big doughnut with a TEA spoon of Dubai chocolate filling . The filling tastes great no complaints there , but when it's double the price of a regular ponchik and half the filling and double the dough ... it's not worth it. I bought it a few times and thought maybe it was just a bad batch here and there but it's consistently been disappointing. You basically have to just bite the middle filling and throw the rest of the heavy dough away .

Yelp
The concept of an international bakery is a luring proposition. While this brand has other locations, I visited the one on Roscoe in Northridge. The inside has a small but comfortable seating with couches. There are sample goods in the showcases but no tags for names or origins. Therefore, one has to ask. When I did so, the man behind the counter seemed agitated and was unfriendly to answer so many questions. I ordered at the counter and waited 15 minutes till my carry out order was ready. I took home 3 items. Beef empanadas ($4.50 each) were fried and had a crispy chewy covering. The ground beef inside was bland. I also got a potato Perashki ($2.85). This by far, was the best. The potato filling had taste and the baked outer dough had the right amount of chew. The last item was a mini beef Georgian Khachapuri ($8.99). Think of the outer covering of a pupusa but disk shaped. The beef filling here was identical to the one in the empanada and therefore, uneventful. Take out box came with red chili (or Cayenne) powder and salt mix. Hardly tasted the red powder.

Yelp
Absolutely terrible experience. I ordered from Papillon Bakery and ended up with food poisoning. The food was undercooked and tasted like it was made with old oil. Nothing about it was fresh. This place clearly doesn't care about quality or safety. Never ordering from here again!
google avatar

Eliza M.

Yelp
One of the worst services ever. They keep making mistakes on delivery at all times. I had put in an order and of course they didn't send my cake pops. And a girl called saying oh I forgot to send your cake pops. You can come and get them tomorrow. Never ever again. They suck!

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
So severely disappointed with the quality and ratio of filling to dough on the Dubai chocolate ponchiks, not to mention they're almost twice the price as a regular custard
google avatar

Duv O.

Yelp
This place make good pastries and way better than over rated Porto's. Service was good and inside is a chill place. I like this place

Mehrdad B.

Yelp
Awful service, I was kicked out very rudely because I had a service dog. so disrespectful to disabled people who need service dog for their daily life. I can't believe how some people can be inhumane and rude.
google avatar

Yelp
Although they are on Uber eats they have no idea how it works or to manage orders. I called to inquire help about why my order wasn't going through and language was a major barrier. After an extremely long delay, they finally sent the order. It was stale , disgusting and old. I recommend not using this location.
google avatar

Alexis G.

Yelp
This place has great pastries how eever if your call and order ahead most of the time they still won't be ready, and you willl have to wait past your desired pick up time. Also the lady isnt very friendly . But the craft is there.
google avatar

Bertha B.

Yelp
Whether I call in the morning or day of and willing to wait or order it to be ready in few hours.... They are always out of lamajoon. Make it make sense.

Karon A.

Yelp
If you have a sweet tooth this is the place to go!! I tried the phonuts as well as the nutella ponchiks, it was very fresh, gooey, and melted in my mouthh. 10 out of 10, will definitely be back soon
google avatar

Yelp
Best ponchiks in town!! Ferrero Rocher ponchiks are in another level . Everything is delicious in this place with out exception. Excellent service and really nice atmosphere.

Yelp
Amazing bakery! Great customer service I called for a rather large order and the accommodated my request. We will be back

Yelp
STAY AWAY! Wow what a shltty customer service. Ordered online and came in to pick up 45 minutes later. Nothing was ready, order was never put in... Guy at counter gave me an attitude - like wait another 30 minutes or leave, we don't care. I asked for refund and he said they can't , have to wait for two days to refund, on cc....what??? Yea if it doesn't go thru just call us... He kept saying "what you wanna do?" Like I had a choice... So I waited another 30 minutes Was it worth the wait? Not really. Mood was ruined. Food was just ok... Upd. As I write the review another person comes in to pick up online order just to be told to wait... Disrespect for peoples time is a common practice here AVOID!
google avatar

Joanie C.

Yelp
We love their ponchiks, always a good experience with papillon. We always take them when visiting friends and family, their dough is thin just how we like it.
google avatar

Boo B.

Yelp
Went here for its famous doughnut filled pastries but were not able to get it bc we were told we had to order by phone 30 mins in advance. The day after I tried calling the place near 10x and no one picked up the phone. Gave up and will not even bother with this place. Not worth it. Ambiance was interesting theme but they only sell in bulk.

Yelp
I randomly saw this on my friend's snapchat story and I immediately had to know where! With many locations around the Valley, Papillon is a hit. This specific location has an interesting interior that definitely catches your eye! Located on the corner, you may have to go around the building to initially find it. My personal favorite sweet are the ponchiks! They're cute and miniature. The flavors we got were raspberry, Nutella and custard. My favorite one has to be the Nutella! Also, we got the Pizza Perashki which is basically a meat pizza! Thin yet crispy crust, I recommend this to anyone that wants more of a savory taste. Overall, nice staff and interior so I would definitely recommend to come again and try the rest of their yummy delicacies!

Amy B.

Yelp
Their desserts are really good...but their Nutella chocolate ponchik is one of my faves but their new Dubai chocolate ponchik, yum!!

Mia F.

Yelp
I randomly stopped here with my bf looking for a snack and holy! it's so good , the filled looking donuts were delicious! I will definitely be coming back!!
google avatar

Jasmine R.

Yelp
I have been coming to this location for years. Their pastries are always fresh and delicious. The staff is friendly and kind. The shop has a couch, chairs, and tables for lounging. Bonus: parking in the back.
google avatar

a t.

Yelp
My items I ordered definitely don't look like the pictures they post. Decent taste, as this place is one of the original Armenian donut maker but the size is pathetic. How hard is it to make your item uniform? After all you have older Armenian ladies in the back making these items for cash under the table. No skill required really.
google avatar

Sarah Y.

Yelp
Maybe I am not familiar with this kind of food. I mean I figured all cultures have dumplings in many shapes, forms and sizes...Empanadas, Gyozas, kreplach, Shu mai, Samosas etc. So with that, here are our ratings 1. Perashkis potato-100% Very good, Mushroom, good 2. Chicken Empanadas, 80% filling kind of dry 3.Jingalov Bread, different. Good with seasoned salt The pastry is Very good on all of these! I have a funny feeling the desserts are great. Will have to try next time

Lilith G.

Yelp
Ordered through uber eats and the prices are not only a dollar more on the app, but the portions are smaller. The ponchik shouldve been bigger but i guess we're not there so you don't have to face us when you're handing us much smaller ponchiks at higher prices. Do better. As far as the taste goes, not bad at all!
google avatar

Larissa R.

Yelp
I've always been a fan of ponchiks but I've never had it from here. I've only ever tried the ones from Art's Bakery in Glendale but one fateful 3am I was craving sweets and my instagram Adsense new and sent an ad to this place on my feed so I bit the bullet and ordered for pick up the next day. Since I've never been here before I wanted to try a bit of everything and here's what I think of everything I ordered. (The prices are from my online order from their site): I was very pleasantly surprised by the Lahmajun. At only $1.93 a pop it's a very good savory snack to pair with all the sweets they have to offer. The meat was super tasty and seasoned just right I ate it in not even 3 minutes! I've had a lahmajun from another place before but didn't like it very much but considering it was from a lebanese place it might also be a regional difference in spices/seasoning I'm just not aware of. I got a Potato & Meat Perashki ($2.19). This is also one of those things that make for a really good quick savory snack. I personally didn't like the filling too much because I'm not a big fan of dill (or pickles) and the filling is very dill-forward, just as the Russians traditionally make them. I still ate it all and dipped it in the spiced salt that they provided. I'm a big fan of the dough which is suspect is just the ponchik dough but it is nice and chewy but also light and fluffy. I think next time I'll just try a different filling. I ordered one custard ponchik and one Nutella ponchik ($2.19 each). I loved their custard ponchik so much! The filling is not too sweet and the dough is not overly filled as well. The dough is nice and chewy and light like a Britney is Youve ever had one. I did not like the dulce de leche one at all. I found it was too sweet and too thick. The actual dulce de leche itself didn't taste very good. It would've tasted better if they just boiled a can of condensed milk and used that. Lastly, I got one custard Napoleon ($2.20) and one Nutella Napoleon ($2.75). Ive never had Napoleons before and I'm not entirely sure if the puff pastry is supposed to remain dry and crumbly in layers (which the nutella one was) or to soften up in layers like a croissant (which is the custard one was). I was a bit confused by the consistency of these two but I enjoyed the custard one was more. This place is pretty good for some niche desserts but give that it is a bit of a trek from my home, I wouldn't drive out for it at all. Food is reasonably priced but tend to be a hit or miss, at least for me. I still would recommend you try it if you're in the area but, if not, don't fret it's not life-changing either
google avatar

Miziel R.

Yelp
I called in my order for pick up and Nelli was the one helping me. She's very pleasant, nice and helpful. We ordered Armenian pizza, Beef and pizza perashki both very good. Ponchik - nutella and custard. I like the custard better. Nacho cheese and chicken empanadas- both crispy crunchy and good hot. We wanted to try the Cheese roll but they sold out. Pastries and goodies are all good and freshly made. Highly recommend. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Hilary N.

Yelp
I ordered the mini ponchiks (Nutella,Oreo, and custard) and the only one actually really filled was Nutella. I am disappointed because I've purchased in the past and it was so good but the Oreo and custard were essentially dry even though I had them fresh. Giving three stars only because the Nutella was good
google avatar

Rafael B.

Yelp
This place definitely checks the box when I've craving something sweet and something salty. We usually get some meat and pizza perashkis, a nacho cheese empanada, churros with nutella, and some oreo nutella ponchiks! It's kinda hard to stop eating all so often we find ourselfs napping after a carb and sugar overload so you should definitely plan for a calorie deficit for the rest of the week haha! There's a small parking lot that is shared with the rest of the plaza but so far I've never had a hard time. It's also a good for delivery!
google avatar

Nadia R.

Yelp
I had been here plenty of times before and have always had great customer service. Except today. First off the girl that was the desk (didn't get her name) was rude and looked like she didn't want to be at work. Asked for a box variety of Ponchiks and she acted like she didn't know what I was talking about even though I pointed at it on the menu. And just showed me the flavors but not acknowledging me. So I ordered the ones I wanted. Sat down and realized she charged me for the regular sized . So I went back to the front desk and waited for 10min to change my order and even called the baker there and the one who helped me Just ignored me and saw me.. then I ended up having to call through the phone JUST so I can get her attention. Finally she came up . And I asked her "were these the regular sized ones? Cuz I ordered the mini box of 15" and she said "no u can't. You should've called me over" and I said "I did. And u ignored me. I've been standing here for 10 min. And now you're saying I can't change the order? " and she said no. Terrible customer service on her behalf. Not coming here again .

Yelp
This is bad kitchen Inside only 50% and rest is just dough And for 3.15$ How can you mock a customer like that?
google avatar

Anna J.

Yelp
Hello ponchiks! These were so much fun to eat. It was soft & can get very messy. I've had the Nutella & Raspberry filled ponchiks and they were delicious. I called in ahead & picked it up. Very friendly. Box was very vibrant. Makes a good gift to drop off to a friend or family member to brighten their day!

Yelp
Frequently stop by here for good food. Also, great to take to family or friends house.

Yelp
Worse customer service ever never will I come here again. The tall girl who works on Saturday at 4:22 is extremely extremely rude with me and the customers who came in and out. Your attitude will cost this place bad business. If the owners care they should change this employee asap. Word ever never again.
google avatar

Justine D.

Yelp
If you are looking for birds milk cake in the valley you need to come here! It's SOOOO good and you can tell that they put their heart and soul and LOVE into their desserts. Never tried it before? I recommend getting the variety pack, keep it in the fridge so it's nice and cold. It comes with the chocolate, caramel and nuts flavors. SOO yummy - my favorite is the caramel. They are also open super late! Wooo hooo!

Juliet A.

Yelp
Very good bakery, lots of good and delicious goodies, happy to visit them all the time
