Pappy’s Cafe’s Smothered Chicken Fried Steak Is Moving to a New Location - Eater Houston

"After more than 30 years in Memorial Village, Pappy’s Cafe is moving to a new location near the Energy Corridor. Its future home at 12313 Katy Freeway is just a 12-minute drive west of its current home, which will open next week, according to a press release. The new space, which was formerly occupied by a Texas Land & Cattle Steakhouse, is larger than its current building at nearly 7,000 square feet and has more parking, a bigger bar, and two private dining rooms. Pappy’s has earned a loyal following over the decades for its broad menu of Texan comfort foods served in a Western-themed setting. The chicken fried steak has earned plenty of press accolades and crowds of dedicated diners, along with the equally-lauded fried catfish, burgers, meatloaf, and shrimp & grits. 'After so many years, there’s a lot of sentimentality surrounding the original location – but we’ll still be serving up that same old-fashioned charm and classic Texas comfort food our guests have always known and loved,' said Pappy’s Café owner Paul Braden in a statement. 'We invite our loyal customers and Memorial Village community to come on out and say their farewells to the original Pappy’s, have a great meal and share some memories before the big move.' Pappy’s new location at 12313 Katy Freeway will open on Thursday, April 5 at 11 a.m. The current location’s last day of service will be Saturday, March 31. The restaurant will be open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m." - Alaena Hostetter

Very nice place to go for good food! Comfy ambience with some diner character. The staff was really friendly, food was served quick, and quality was high. The prices are totally fair. Try the cherry cobbler, yummy :D!

There are a lot of different food spots to choose from in the Energy Corridor. This was one of the only restaurants that was still open for different past 8 PM. I was surprised to see that it was EMPTY for dinner when I came by at 7:45. There were probably 4 other guests in the whole restaurant. I sat down at the bar area, and Michael came to take care of me. Service was a bit slow, which was surprising because no one else was there... took a while to get my water and to place my order. I got the Chicken Florentine with the Texas Smashed Potatoes and Fried Okra. I then couldn't pass up homemade blackberry cobbler for dessert, which hit home with a nice scoop of vanilla on top! There's plenty of bar seating and regular dining. It was just quiet and slow. Seems like a good local watering hole to check out.

Google
LOVE 💯, Terry gives the best service and has the best personality. He's out of this world!!!! We ordered everything and took so much home! Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs! This is my favorite restaurant. One because of the delicious food, but because of the friendly service you receive at the door step. So wholesome, welcoming, friendly and inviting! Wholesome.

Service was very good here as is the atmosphere. Had the chicken fried steak and ribs/sausage plate. The portions are big and everything was really tasty. The ribs were super tender.

Google
Great service from Lauryn (Lauren?) The manager delivered my burger and when he noticed the lettuce was browned from being under the heat lamp too long he had the kitchen fix it. Great service and atmosphere. Try the blue cheese with the fried pickles.

Google
First time here and honestly Pappy’s Cafe is a wonderful spot. The staff was friendly and attentive. We had the chicken fried steak and the bunless wonder, they were great! Highly recommended. A great spot for anyone looking to enjoy good comfort food 👍🏽 PS they now have cherry cobbler. You’re welcome 😉

Google
The restaurant is nearby the hotel we were staying so went there for dinner. The menu has a good collection of local delicacies and the Chicken Fried Steak was so good. My colleagues and I were well taken care of by Lea and Terry. We were so impressive that we went there for two consecutive nights!

Google
Maria made the experience disappointing. I ordered the “grilled marinated lemon chicken” as described on the menu, but it appeared to be coated in flour and cooked in butter or oil—not grilled. Since I’m counting calories, I didn’t want it and asked to remove the chicken and just pay for the sides. Instead of simply taking the plate with the chicken, Maria removed the entire platter which had my two bowls of sides on it, which were **half-eaten**, without even asking—despite me clearly not being done. We were then charged $6 for the sides, which I wouldn’t have minded if I’d **actually been allowed to finish them.** Given that they were halfway eaten, we should have been charged $3, not $6. She was also a bit rude when we were asking questions about food while ordering. Very disappointing experience.

Yelp
My family has been coming to Pappy's for 30 years now (before I was even born)! We use to go to the old location down further west on I-10 every Friday! The restaurant was pretty busy on a Saturday night but it wasn't too loud and our table to easily hear each other. Our server was so sweet and attentive. Our drinks always stayed full and anything extra we needed was brought so quickly. My family ordered the chicken fried steak, hickory burger, Bubba's chicken, and too many sides to count. All delicious!! Since they moved, we haven't gone much because it's not as close, but boy, we should start making the drive. I forgot how much I LOVE their food.

Yelp
bland food, little to no seasoning. ok service tbh the best part of my meal was my fountain drink. the foods not terrible it just needs a lot more flavor. ordered the tenders and fries and a side of mac & cheese the food was very bland. I don't think I would recommend

Yelp
I've been to Pappy's a few times now. It's very close to where I live which makes it super convenient. I usually start with the fried onions or the fried pickles. Fried onions - they are the thin and crispy fried onions. They are very good and seasoned perfectly. They serve them with ranch, and I believe that the ranch is homemade. It doesn't taste anything like bottled ranch. Fried pickles - They are some of the best fried pickles around. Always fried perfectly, and seasoned perfectly. The only issue that I've ever had with them is, that the ones on the bottom that sit in the oil do get pretty soggy. For my meal, I've tried a few different things. I've tried the chicken fried steak, ribeye steak, BLT, chopped steak and a few others that I don't remember. Most items are pretty solid. Chicken Fried Steak - not the best, but not bad either. It's good enough to where this is the meal that I've ordered the most. One thithing is, it has A LOT of batter. The cream gravy is also good and compliments the steak well. Ribeye Steak - its not bad, but I'd have to say, if you want to good ribeye, this is not the place to go. I do feel that's to be expected. I'm sure that not a lot of people would think that this would be the place to go get a great steak. It wasn't bad for the price, you get what you pay for. BLT - I've had mixed experiences. One time it was great! The next time I couldn't really eat it. The bacon was so hard that it was shredding the top of my mouth. It was painful to eat. Maybe I went on a bad day the 2nd time. I will give them another chance on the BLT because the 1st one was so good, and, believe it or not, it's hard to find a good BLT. Chopped Steak - as far as chopped steaks, it did the job. It's served with onion gravy. It didn't knock my socks off, but I also don't have any complaints. I usually get a side salad, mashed potatoes and green beans. All are a good choice. The service Is always good. All and all, Pappy's is a solid 4 stars. Good comfort food for a decent price.

Yelp
Our traditional Friday night go to post gymnastic meal. Mac n Cheese is always on point! Chicken Fried Chicken and Chickem Fries steak never disappoints. Poblano soup is amazing and staff is the friendliest. Creamed spinach and mashed potatoes are another Favorite. And the salads are so satisfying.

Yelp
Cozy cabin style restaurant with full bar and TVs. Home style cooking that was true comfort food. We had cocktails, chicken fried chicken, a mushroom Swiss burger and the kids catfish. Everything was top notch. The wait staff and owner were friendly, helpful, and made it a great experience. Well will def be back!

Yelp
We were really surprised by how good the food was at Pappys! I got the guacamole burger, and my husband got the grilled salmon with the broccoli and creamed spinach sides. He said the flavor of the salmon was really delicious; it was just a bit small, he wished it had been bigger for the price (which I think was around $15). It was 6 oz of salmon. But my guacamole burger was unbelievably delicious! The bun was so thick and squishy, the grilled onions were perfection, there was generous portions of every ingredient, and the flavor was fantastic. We agreed we are already planning on going back there this weekend! I want to try everything on their menu!

Yelp
Great service--friendly, attentive. Great for the fam. Sad to know it moved from the old location, but glad I can still go to Pappy's.

Yelp
It's a texas themed cafe. Went on Sat for lunch. Lots of brunch people. Waiters were friendly and service was good. Food is ok. Had BLT, lots of bacon but very crispy so it crumbled in and fell out of the sandwich. Fries needed a little more cooking. My son happy with his burger. 5 stars for service, 3 stars for food
google avatar

Yelp
This place is one of those that give out a lasting impressing even if you don't come often. Everything is so good and the fried items come out super crispy. From what I remembered, service was very fast and the whole place feels very homey. Chicken fried chicken and chicken fried steak were both amazing and I could safely say if I'm not trying to lose weight, I will be here way more often!

Yelp
The food always is great! The bartender (wish I remembered her name) was such a gem! We enjoyed her company while sitting at the bar. We have also have eaten in the dining area and it is too, a great experience.

Julie D.

Yelp
This is a great place for good comfort food! Their scorpion tails are delicious. I didn't think they were too spicy but my husband got one and it definitely "stung" him. lol. I like their country fried steak. Their burgers are solid too. My husband likes their chicken fried chicken. I've dined in and carried out.

Kenneth P.

Yelp
This restaurant is truly a gem. Great food and service in a wonderful atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Everything was great. From the service to the food. Nice atmosphere, just a good place to eat. Only one thing was the hostess didn't seem to understand her job. We weren't greeted well and after we told her how many in our party seemed kept talking to another employee as if we weren't there. We weren't even walked to our table just pointed to our table.

Yelp
Upon entering Pappys café, the rustic charm of the southern country atmosphere is palpable. Despite a slightly delayed initial service, my chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy proved to be a satisfying, albeit not award-winning, choice. The supposed homemade blue cheese dressing on my salad fell short, resembling a bottled variety, possibly due to excessive sweetness. Despite the sporadic attention from my waitress, the overall dining experience was enjoyable. Despite the service hiccup, I would consider returning for another taste of their delightful southern cuisine. If you're in search of good southern fare, Pappys is certainly worth a try.

Yelp
This was our first visit to Pappys Café on the Katy Freeway. This is a family run business. The food is excellent. The servings are large. The fried mushroom appetizer is enough for four people. The service was excellent. One of the owners came by and spoke with us. Drinks were kept filled. It is a very interesting dining room with many objects to look at! The booths are very comfortable. The chocolate sundae was good and I will revisit Pappy soon for the Apple pecan cobbler à la mode.

Ana R.

Yelp
Pappys has REALLY brought up their food game!! Absolutely delicious, hot & fresh on a to-go order??!! Dang!! Yummy!! Love me some pappys!!!

Sasha P.

Yelp
Pappy's cafe is a great neighborhood restaurant, always consistent, comfort food.,and great service

Yelp
We had another nice meal at Pappy's with the family. My first in two years. The results pretty much confirmed my prior experience. The Good: I like the western/Texas decor/theme. It's getting a bit dated, but still nice. The menu has an incredible selection from burgers and steaks to enchiladas and pastas. Our server was amazing. I wish that I could remember her name so I could give her an attagirl! The Bad: The food is still fairly average. A decent pasta, decent chicken fried steak. My burger was better than average, but the fries were undercooked and uneatable. Still a nice place for a group, as they will definitely find something to order. Just expect the food to be perfectly average.

Yelp
Wow! What an amazing dining experience! Terry was our server and he was so upbeat and friendly! The food was outstanding! They even serve $4 margaritas everyday, all day. And let me tell you, they are awesome! Terry gave us a sample of the mango Rita and it was so tasty with a slight kick of heat! Iced tea is also on par and the fried mushrooms and jalapeños were great (not pre-fab food from Sysco, but as Houston old timers will know, as fabulous as Mama's and The Strawberry Patch). Terry also stuffed us with samples of the gumbo, crawfish topping they were serving on top of red fish, and cheesy bacon grits! Oh my gosh, oh my gosh! For our actual meal, I had the bunless burger and fried okra and hubs had the chicken tender platter with waffle fries. The fries were actually cooked and crunchy with flavor (not like wimpy, flavorless ones from that drive through chicken place). And he had cream gravy. He was in heaven. To add more calories to our meal, because it felt like we were on vacation, I ordered key lime pie. Let me tell you that is not my favorite dessert, BUT this, too was over the top! The thick graham cracker crust had pecans in it and the lime flavor was soft and balanced, not sour. The healthy dose of whipped cream served with it was spot on, fresh and perfect. Give it a try! Maybe I'll see you there because I am going to be a "frequent flyer" of Pappy's!

Yelp
Came in for the CFS and loved everything they had. Appetizers, Mushrooms and Onion Rings(thin strings which I love) were delicious, salad was good sized, and as expected the CFS was outstanding. Service was great and we sat in the bar area. Several big screens to watch and some great local craft beers on tap! Highly recommend this spot for a great meal!

Ken P.

Yelp
The food was delicious. The service very fast and professional. The atmosphere was very nice and rustic.

Paul M.

Yelp
Gotta be one of the worst experience at the bar. Can't believe how some of these places stay in business with lousy service. Had to ask 2-3 times to get anything. Food was so-so, maybe because it was frustrating before the food.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
Started off with the jalapeños bites. Pretty good with a generous amount of ranch dressing provided. Drank a few Shiners with meal. Main course was a rack of RIbs. I have had better but still they wernt bad. There wasn't a lot of meat on the ribs and sauce helped it along. Corn tasted like it was just out of the can with no butter or spice. The thing here was the service. The waiter was great and very friendly. It wont be my go to spot but will still be in consideration when I get back to Houston.
google avatar

Tomara P.

Yelp
Visited for lunch a few weeks ago. The service was great but the food was bland. I had the chicken fried steak. The breading was ok but the steak was tasteless. I was hoping to love the place as I work close by but I won't be back.
google avatar

Max O.

Yelp
I think the menu looks good but after appetizers, and meal, the food if mediocre and just bland, plane food for your "white "pallet.

Midge L.

Yelp
Went for brunch. Exceptional service (Terry) and good food. Cute ambiance. Will be a restaurant to visit again.
google avatar

Yelp
I have been a life long Pappy's fan. Still am. The menu is unbeatable and the food is the best. I recommend the Tortilla Soup and the sides... great southern fare. Fried Okra... casserole.... mac n cheese... The service is always the best here too... keep it up Pappy's
google avatar

LaTiesha A.

Yelp
Love this place! As you can see by the pictures I go often lol! The margaritas are on point and have good prices. I've gotten other items on the menu that are good but my go to is the blackened chicken Caesar salad! Go check them out!

Clint E.

Yelp
This was an ok place . We were in town for business and walked to Pappy's from our hotel. I expected to be better than what we got based on the ratings. We ordered the appetizer that was the pepper and shrimp I think they were called scorpion tails. These were really good and we thought ok this is gonna be a good place. We all ordered ribs okra and mashed potatoes. The okra was just ok the potatoes were good but not wow. But the ribs were not good . This really surprised me I would have thought being in texas that the ribs would be better than this. I was also a little let down that they did not have Lone Star on draft or bottle . Our server was great and if you do decide to eat here ask for Terry. He made the visit better than the food .

Yelp
What a great find! Located in a very industrial area, this place is a gem. The menu is very diverse so even the pickiest of eaters can find something. My husband ordered the chopped steak, it was a huge portion, cooked perfectly and came with 2 delicious sides. I over indulged in the onion strings (big portion and so good) so I had the vegetable plate. 3 veggies for $8.99 wasn't the best deal but the veggies were good. The coleslaw was a little bland. We wanted to have dessert (the pictures on Yelp looked great) but we were too full. We will definitely be back to try more items! James is a doll! Such fast and friendly service from him.

Keila MsDominicana B.

Yelp
This is my 3rd time here, and they always have great service and tasteful food. I've never had to wait too long for my food.

Jordan B.

Yelp
The bacon burger amazing also staff was so kind and it tastes really good try the bacon burger to also the place was really clean!
google avatar

Jamie G.

Yelp
The food was excellent! We had a cheeseburger and the turkey spinach dip sandwich. Only complaint could be is it's like all spinach, so be into that. Burger was cooked to perfection. Service was fun and light at the bar side seating. Definitely would return.
google avatar

Greg M.

Yelp
Food was hot and tasty! The waitress was very polite and understanding about us taking our time trying to figure out what to eat. She made a couple recommendations and we decided to go with one! Very good choice I recommend this restaurant.
google avatar

Kim T.

Yelp
Our waitress, Bonnie, was amazing! So personable, conversational, attentive and knowledgeable about the menu offerings. I'd give her 5 stars! We ordered the fried mushrooms as an appetizer-- fried food, came out hot but had no seasoning. My husband had the highly rated chicken fried steak with gravy on the side and mashed potatoes. Food has no flavor.
google avatar

James-Lana S.

Yelp
Our family was in town for a short time, and passed Pappy's on our way to the hotel. There were 4 of us eating dinner on a Wednesday night around 8:00. Our waiter was Terry & he was FABULOUS! I don't believe that I have ever had a better waiter! Everything we ordered was superb! He even brought a sundae for the kids to split "because they were so good"! lol Our drinks were never empty & we never lacked for anything. The chicken strip meal that my son ordered was huge! The enchiladas that my husband ordered were on point! Literally everything was delicious. My kids wanted to go back for lunch the next day. The menu has a wide variety, surely enough to please any group of people. If we are ever back in the area, we will definitely go back!
google avatar

Tammy M.

Yelp
The service was amazing. The food was fantastic. I highly recommend this place can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Best Scorpion Tails in town. It was my birthday Brought Family & will return again soon. All food was warm and served according to everyone order. Good experience! Prices right!

Anony M.

Yelp
We make a point of going to this restaurant anytime we are in Houston. The food is consistently delicious. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Looking for some good comfort food - this is your place. Our server, Bonnie, was fantastic! She was attentive and kept drinks filled and orders taken but also- she's funny and personable and really added to the experience. The food & drinks- awesome. Tried the Boot Scoot Boogie drink and it was - wow! Careful to not drink too many because they taste mild but have a boozy punch. We shared the Philly cheesesteak and Bacon cheese burger. The burger was very good, ordered it medium. It was juicy, flavorful, and the bun is phenomenal. Chose the house cut fries and thought those were good. The Philly was "ok" and is the reason the review is 4 instead of 5 stars. It had good flavor but seemed to be slightly rough. This was my first time at this Cafe and really enjoyed the casual, laid back vibe, the service and the food. I'll be back to try more things !
google avatar

Sarah N.

Yelp
My family and I, who also run a business, eat at Pappy's at least once a week. We've had everything on the menu and loved it all. Our favorites: Chicken fried chicken sandwich. Breaded and always cooked perfectly, juicy, served on the most amazing bun. My father in laws go to lunch 95% of the time. I personally like the BLT for Me sandwich. I'm super picky about bacon and like it be cooked until it's almost burnt. I tell the waitstaff how I like it and it ALWAYS comes out exactly as requested. The wheat-berry bread it's served on is also really food. My mother in law swears by the Macho Tacos, but loves all of the Mexican food that Pappy's serves. This is a must try place! Also great happy hour specials and daily menu items! Highly recommended!
google avatar

Joshua S.

Yelp
Love the chicken finger basket and there nachos!! Super friendly place and the staff is top notch.
google avatar

Breanne L.

Yelp
Very large menu with plenty of food options to choose. Pleased with the drink menu and a very homey place. Families and couples plus a bar if you just need a night out! Server and hostess were great and the bartender got the drinks together quickly. Really enjoyed my meal as did my coworker. We went on a Thursday evening and there was ample parking and limited wait on a table. Check this place out!

Glenda T.

Yelp
Not sure why people say the chicken fried steak had no flavor. We thought it was excellent and we've eaten CFS our whole lives! And, the key lime pie was really good! You can tell it's homemade! We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Vic S.

Yelp
Doesn't take the void of the Mason Jar but a close second. Comfort food for sure and nice bar area.
google avatar

Patty C.

Yelp
It's not often that I eat southern comfort food. Don't get me wrong, I love it! It's just not exactly part of a healthy diet plan. But when I want to be naughty, I go all out. One of my favorite guilty pleasure is a chicken fried steak smothered in delicious pepper cream gravy, and when I get that hankering, I know exactly where to satisfy it. Pappy's CFS is the real deal and is sure to satisfy a a craving for this southern classic. So what makes it awesome? 1. Batter does not crumble or fall right off the meat 2. Meat is tender and not gristly or chewy 3. The batter is seasoned and not greasy 4. Tasty mashed potatoes 5. Bomb cream black pepper gravy It meets all the makings of a delicious CFS, and it satisfies my craving. Mashed potatoes were good. Coleslaw was nice. The service is always great, and the menu offers enough variety to satisfy most tastes. Love the fact that it is conveniently located on the 1-10 feeder road.
google avatar

Yelp
Still a great place but they do not do the shelf for the taco salad anymore Fried jalapeños are really good everything's good

Will G.

Yelp
Traveled to Houston and stopped here for dinner, everything was great from the food to the service. Everything was hot and fresh with generous portions, our waitress was friendly and checked up on us the entire time. A great Houston restaurant.
