Best Muffulettas in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Chances are, any old-school po’ boy joint in Jefferson Parish will also serve a solid muffuletta. This is true of Parenton’s, a small Irish Channel grocery-turned-Jeff Parish staple that’s been around since the 1940s. It’s served cool here, which is some folks’ preference, in some cases because it makes for better leftovers, and on seeded French bread instead of traditional muffuletta bread." - Beth D’Addono

22 Essential Po’ Boy Shops in and Around New Orleans

"Parenton’s got its start as a small Irish Channel grocery in the 1940’s — yes, you read that right. It’s been in Jefferson since the ’50s, flying under the radar for some but with an unwavering following of fans who frequent the shop weekly. It’s known for shrimp and roast beef po’ boys, but consider taking advantage of the daily specials, which include its famous chicken fried steak po’ boy. Either way, you’ll be happy you made this stop." - Eater Staff

Tucked away in New Orleans' heart, Parentons Poboys is a neighborhood gem serving soul-satisfying sandwiches since 1946. This family-run restaurant is a living piece of NOLA history, offering traditional po'boys with fresh-baked French bread and welcoming service. As a spot where locals gather, taste and tradition still matter. With nearly eight decades of history, Parenton's has stayed true to its roots, providing authenticity that's increasingly rare. It's a reminder of why these traditions matter, making every bite a cherished experience. The 6" roast beef on seeded bread is my go to sandwich here.

Google
This is the first time I've eaten at this great little neighborhood restaurant. Brenda & Dennis are the owners and prepare everything to order. The Shrimp Po Boy was one of the best I've ever had! The shrimp were perfectly cooked and the french bread was exactly how I like it, crunchy outside and soft in the middle. I will definitely be back to try the renowned oysters! Prices are very reasonable too.

Google
Adorable family run restaurant. Delicious onion rings. Fried to perfection. Country fried steak poboy was top notch. Oysters were fried perfectly. Will be back!

I was craving a shrimp poboy today. I had been looking at this place for a while and finally decided to give it a try today... It's located in a cozy little neighborhood not far from the main highway. If I lived there, I'd probably be there quite a bit! Lol. It's a cute little mom and pop joint with very nice people, pretty cool decor, and a pretty chill atmosphere. I got the six inch shrimp poboy. It was a pretty decent size that actually filled me up. The bread was fresh and had the perfect crunch. The shrimp were seasoned well, and all the toppings were fresh! If you're in the area, I'd definitely give them a try!!

Google
We order lunch for our auto repair shop from here a couple times a month. The food is always delicious and the atmosphere is great! Lots of nostalgia on the walls! The roast beef on seeded bread is hands down the best roast beef poboy in the city! The fried seafood is always cooked and seasoned to perfection. Brenda and Dennis are great people, They make everything fresh to order, which gives me a minute to talk with Ms. Brenda.

Google
The food is so fresh and good the staff was kind and nice. This is my first time here I will be returning. I had the roast beef combo

Google
Great selection of food. Shrimp poboys are delicious! Large portions of food. The people working there were friendly and talk to everyone. No wonder that they're still in business after all these years.

Google
The hot sausage on a bun is the best I've ever had, hands down. It's just on a different level. If you like that sandwich, it's an absolute must try.

Yelp
The roast beef and the fried green tomatoes were one of the best I have ever had! Absolutely delicious!

Yelp
This is a small little dive po boy place tucked away in a neighborhood one block off Jeff Hwy (turn at the Blue Tomato / Jefferson Feed Pet & Garden Center then first right on Ellen about a block in). This joint has a dedicated following of local fans that frequent this establishment. They have good seafood po boys and different specials each day of the week all at really great prices. Legend says they have some of the most fantastic fried chicken and I certainly have found it to be quite a nice version of the many great versions of New Orleans fried chicken. The folks that work here seem friendly and like to strike up conversation when it isn't too busy. Most things about this place I really like while the one thing I don't enjoy is that this place is only open for lunch so that can be challenging when you might like to have some of their food for dinner time but you certainly should make an effort to sample the daily specials when you can. Parenton's Po-Boys is also right down the street from Central Poboys so you always have a choice of these two great poboy joints to choose from right in this area. Overall Parenton's really offers some good food at a great price. My video review of Parenton's Po-boys is here: https://youtu.be/364GuHohAJM

Yelp
If I could eat here everyday I absolutely would!! Even her club sandwich has me craving it weeks later! This place is so special! It's just a perfect experience all the way around!

Susie M.

Yelp
Food delicious! Customer Service awesome. You gotta get their chicken fried steak with best-ever Mac & Cheese plate lunch. Only served on Thursdays I think, and they sell out fast. We've also enjoyed their roast beef Po-boy (served every day) and Spaghetti with meatballs. Call ahead to find out what their specials are but everything is delicious. Comfortable & safe environment. They close at 3:00 pm so go early or call ahead to place orders. Kudos to Brenda & her restaurant family.

Vickie S.

Yelp
Shrimp po boy and red beans and rice were awesome!! Huge portions!!! The fried pork chop with the red beans & rice was my favorite!!!!

Yelp
The roast beef poor boy was so good I am thinking about it more than two years later. Can't wait to go back next time in New Orleans.

Joy A.

Yelp
Service was fine. It's a local spot with the local ambiance. My food was... well, it wasn't what I was expecting or hoping for. It wasn't That busy, and yet my sandwich...a hot roast beef...was nowhere Near hot. I prefer my roast beef to be shredded, so I will take the blame for not asking first. But it was not even warm and the roast beef was not even thinly sliced but thick. The gravy was grey and tasteless. French fries were Sweet (????). All in All, a very disappointing lunch.... Sorry, but I won't be back

Yelp
I had an earlier appointment today near Parenton's and decided to stop in for a late lunch. WOW. The shrimp/oyster combo was just amazing. Easily one of the best poboys in the greater New Orleans area. Also the owner was in the restaurant and she was just as kind as possible. These are really good folks and they will work hard for you. Show this place some love.
google avatar

Mark A.

Yelp
Have gone here for years on and off - I think they are simply one of the best local restaurants for poboys around. My personal favorites- catfish and also the roast beef. There large, well made, fresh with great flavor. They get busy so call your order ahead if you can and parking can be difficult- but worth the time.

Yelp
We're from Texas passing through New Orleans for a bit ended up needing to get he Alternator replaced at Jefferson's auto service.. While waiting on our vehicle Josh suggested to have lunch at Parenton' s Po boy ... The fish & shrimp were so fresh .. Hamburger & Po Boy we're amazing The owner was so sweet and had a nice conversation as the storm passed by.. We would drive back just to eat here again... Thank you, Mrs. Rose DeLaRosa

Yelp
A serous looking dive with hard to figure out parking. Don't let that stop you. Park at the house next door (signs say it's for Parenton parking only) or on the street. It's a small, run down looking building but very clean. Counter service is great and food was delivered quickly. (Okay - well the crusty old lady at the counter is nice to the customers, but her patience is worn all the way out with the kitchen staff. The way they're going at it, they must be related.) House made onion rings are super thin cut and hot and fresh from the fryer. Very good. A little ketchup and a shot of Perique pepper sauce on them is perfect. (I've never seen Perique before, but it's good.) The small shrimp po-boy is not small. But it's hot and fresh on crusty Leidenheimer bread. The shrimp are fresh and perfectly fried. No tiny frozen gumbo shrimp here. Dressed means lettuce, tomato, pickles and a heavy dose of mayonnaise. Oh so good. I'm not in this area often, so I originally headed to the joint next door because I knew it was okay. So glad they were closed today and I discovered this gem instead. I think you will be, too.

Pam L.

Yelp
The food is excellent, thanks to Dennis and the rest of "his" staff in the kitchen. The reason for my 3 stars is because Brenda HAS to go!! Every time I go there she's yelling at Dennis and other employees in front of all the customers. Telling Dennis (the owner) to STFU and telling other employees to hurry up, don't answer the phone, stop taking phone orders, these slow ass people can't keep up with orders now. Very very rude! Like I said , she's doing this right in front of ALL the customers! We've been going to PARENTON'S for years, even before Dennis owned it; when Terri and Eddie owned it back in 1990's. But lately with the way Brenda's been acting, I will NOT go back. When I eat, I like to eat in a nice friendly environment, not a screaming nuthouse with a lunatic behind the counter taking your order and screaming obscenities at the owner/boyfriend, employees & sometimes being rude to customers. Yep, I've witnessed that before also. I can go right up the street to Central PoBoy and spend my money there & have a peaceful lunch. Sorry Dennis, tell Brenda to stay home and things will run a lot smoother for you and everyone else there, staff and customers trying to enjoy their lunch. You should hear what YOUR customers are saying while she's yelling at you and your staff. Every customer in there was shaking their heads, many had looks of disgust, we heard 2 say they weren't coming back, one walked in and walked right back out, left. I feel for you Dennis. Oh, here's a little something I overheard Brenda tell an employee "Lent is here, I'm not ordering roast beef, if anybody wants roast beef poboy during lent they can go up the street cuz I'm not f'ing ordering any. Brenda needs to retire...! Attached is a screenshot of the Secretary of State business license, as y'all can clearly see Parenton's is owned by Dennis, not Brenda, as she always claims loudly in front of customers "this is my f'ing busines." No Brenda, sorry it's not, you need to stay home and let Dennis run his business!

Yelp
I was in the mood for a Po Boy but didn't want to go too far from where I was as I had an appt to get to. They were so kind and efficient and the Po Boy was absolutely delicious. She recommended the fried oyster so I went with it and was not disappointed (of course I got it fully dressed ) She also gave my little one complimentary chips so sweet. Can't wait to return
google avatar

Dawn L.

Yelp
Can't tell you about the food...ordered and couldn't get beyond the sexist commentary around Olympic athletes by one of the owners. She can't watch the Olympics, because of "the bitch who kneels for the flag". As a woman of color, I did not feel welcomed at all. Good luck!

Donna F.

Yelp
Great food, fried shrimp, onion rings, meatball poboy, fried chicken I could go on! Owner Brenda is awesome, so friendly and funny! Staff is so nice and helpful!! Definitely a New Orleans (Metairie) hidden gem!
google avatar

Paul W.

Yelp
Great little dive poboy shop. The oyster poboy is fantastic and much better prices than more famous places. The roast beef is quite tasty. Parking is next door. Owners are operators and you can tell by the quality. Recommended.
google avatar

Suga B.

Yelp
Had the pleasure of finding this hidden jewel because my sister recommended them for lunch! If you're ever around Jefferson or Oschner hospital get your lunch here. The chicken was so JUICY and seasoned perfectly!!! I will be returning.

Cynthia C.

Yelp
Great lunchtime food, always fresh and full of atmosphere. The food is consistently good with a variety of the freshest seafood po-boys around, along with other favorites such as meatball and Swiss on seeded bread. Great oysters, either in a salad or poorboy. Can't go wrong with the fried chic or a smoked sausage poorboy. Been going there for decades!
google avatar

Sal C.

Yelp
Went to lunch with three volunteers from EJGH.The roast beef poboy was great. Tender roast with tasty juice. Bread was just right texture making the sandwich one of our top roast beef Poboys. No need for added salt or pepper. Great little neighborhood lunch place. French fries were wonderful. Just right. Employees were friendly. Made you feel at home even though this was our first visit. It won't be our last. Truely a hidden neighborhood gem.
google avatar

Rayshawn R.

Yelp
First time here and I was very impressed .. the bread was soft and the shrimp and catfish were seasoned so well... I saved some for dinner. Definitely will be back..
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Wonderful little gem. Best shrimp or oyster poboys!!! Over stuffed with GBD seafood delights. On Thursday there is a country fried steak as big as a hub cap.
google avatar

Jimmy N.

Yelp
Should be a negative 5 stars. Ordered a meatball poboy, that tasted mildew musty sour like the meat was spoiled. The roast beef was so salty and it was simply sliced roast with no gravy, extremely over loaded with mayonnaise and the bread was hard and stale. Called informed, about experience and food, was told that cant be bad, meatballs were made today. Owner was very rude, had my daughters drive back with food, the owner was rude and yelling. Refused to give full refund, until I spoke to her on phone. Then she slammed the phone down, talking under her breath. Sometimes hole is the wall places are good, other times, they dont have to live up to food standards... I will never be back, cant believe shes been around this long if she treats her customers like this. We used to frequent this place often, loved the meatball poor boys, however quality went down years ago and was told by the owner that pork prices went up so she had to change to a lesser quality product. It's crazy to think that someone that treats people like this would ever still be in business. Beware if the rotten meatballs.

Yelp
We live nearby and really should go more often. Just delicious food. Hubby gets different things, I'm stuck on my own creation. They have a Grandpa's Special sandwich with Italian sausage and grilled onions and peppers. My hubby teases me that I can never leave well enough alone in restaurants. So I get what I call Rosie's Special. Change the Italian sausage to hot sausage and add red "gravy" or marinara sauce. The hot sausage comes in patties so really easy to eat. Just delicious! Had shrimp poboys and those were overstuffed and yummy. If you want fancy, this is not the place for you! And to top it off, the lady who runs it actually remembers my odd order, as well as us, when we go in. It had been at least 4 months and she remembered. Just love the food.
google avatar

Yelp
BEST. PLACE. EVER! From the food to the staff, everything about this place is just amazing. I haven't eaten a single thing here I didn't absolutely love! The owner, Brenda, seals the deal for this adorable mom and pop restaurant. She is there every day and takes time to talk with and get to know all of her customers. There are always daily specials that never disappoint. My go-to though is their shrimp Poboy. HUGE shrimp, hand battered, and served piping hot! Oh, and definitely ask for the broccoli bites... they're a hidden gem. This is a must-eat if you're in the Jefferson/Nola area!!!
google avatar

Joseph T.

Yelp
Darn best place I been to I wish I had a picture they have fantastic oyster salad great lunch dishes and o my God a great hamburger on the bun thick burger you need to try the medium oyster if you think you are that hungry
google avatar

Yelp
Best PoBoys in town! Had the shrimp poboy last time. This time I tried the fried oyster ceaser salad. A very ample portion. The interior decor is like a pub style --sports/music memorabilia. Outside looks like a garage and we drove right past it not even seeing it at first as it is in a residential neighborhood. Super fresh seafood as if caught that morning. Ceasar Dressing is incredible. Husband had the turkey sub.As you can see from the picture it was huge. He had to save half for the next meal. Service was just OK. Not over friendly maybe they sensed we weren't locals. Definitely a locals establishment-a Genuine New Orleans experience.
google avatar

Johannah S.

Yelp
Great food, always good service. The place is rockin' at lunch, so I call ahead, or wait for the rush to pass. Their seafood gumbo is delish. And, don't miss the meatballs - huge and yummy. Never had a bad plate regardless of order. Worth a trip off the Airline or Jefferson Hwy. Plenty of memorabilia on the walls to keep you entertained if you have to wait a bit.
google avatar

Jacqueline M.

Yelp
I have gotten take out a handful of times and they never disappoint. The fried shrimp poboy is a shareable and stuffed with seasoned shrimp! Meatballs are HUGE and tasty. Chicken Parmesan was crispy and tender in the inside! Many rave about the chicken fried steak which I have yet to try.
google avatar

Kim T.

Yelp
I found this near the Airbnb that I was staying at. It is off the beaten path but it is a fantastic hole in the wall. It was so good I came here twice while I was on vacation. I got the soft shell crab po boy and the french roast po boy.
google avatar

Jeff C.

Yelp
AMAZING PLACE. AMAZING SERVICE. AMAZING FOOD!!! I love fried shrimp with hot sausage patty poboy - So many poboy shops won't make it b/c "they don't have an extra meat button". Well this place does! CAN'T BEAT THEIR FOOD OR CUSTOMER SERVICE!!
google avatar

J B.

Yelp
Still the greatest Po-boys around!!! I love the lunch specials, and the "in my neighborhood" location!!!
google avatar

Bill A.

Yelp
Excellent seafood po-boys. Love the onion rings. And the chicken fried steak special is the best.
google avatar

Henry N.

Yelp
Awesome shrimp poboy!!! Got mine to go, had it ready for me really quick. I look forward to eating there again.
google avatar

Martin R.

Yelp
I love it when greatness manifests itself in places like a converted garage. This lady has turned her garage into a po-boy producing wonderland. The collection of memorabilia that adornes the place is rather impressive as well. Here's the Litmus test for off the beaten path food joints. When you go in and find the mailman, UPS guy, an electrician, a plumber, and the Cox cable guy all eating - you've stumbled into a gem. 'nuff said!!! Note: if the person behind the counter gripes about your order - then you've ordered poorly! She's doing you a favor. Don't bitch on Yelp, just ask what you should be getting!
google avatar

Janet S.

Yelp
I've normally have been going to Central Po'boy but it was too packed so we tried here on this particular day we went in and I tell you I was not in any way disappointed! I got an extra large shrimp po boy and the shrimp were huge and they were absolutely cooked just perfect! And Ms. Brenda was just as sweet and accommodating as she could be, the lady that took my order, and she was nice enough to give me some gravy so I can make some debris fries and that gravy was just scrumptious! I will definitely be coming back here soon as possible to try more items!
google avatar

Danon H.

Yelp
This is your typical neighborhood hole in the wall PoBoy shop. The reason I decided to check this place out is because this is my last day of living out here in the suburbs. That and I put off checking this place out for 2 years! I think the very best thing about this place was the customer service. The 2 older ladies behind the counter were extremely friendly. They were very helpful and nice indeed. Most little places like this tend to be rather standoffish with new customers. But thankfully not this one though. After talking to them it turns out that they knew a lot of my former neighbors. With this kind of welcoming attitude I decided to place my order. I ordered a 12 inch shrimp PoBoy fully dressed. I did see that they had other deals on shrimp plates and fish plates but I was in a PoBoy mood that day. The one thing that made me happy was the fact that their soda fountain had Barq's Red cream soda. I love red cream soda! The shrimp PoBoy was very good, not the best I ever had but good nonetheless. The shrimp they used were pretty decent sized. Not like those puny shrimp that you see all these wannabe PoBoy Shops use. So I did get some bang for my buck. This place has more than just plate lunch and shrimp PoBoy sandwiches. On their menu they have tons of PoBoy's for sale like ham, roast beef and quiet a few others. Every time I go to a PoBoy shop I always order the shrimp PoBoy before anything else. It is my personal belief that if their shrimp PoBoy's are no good than none of the rest of their sandwiches will be. Besides the awesome Poboy selection they carry a decent soda fountain selection. Be aware that this place is really small. Honestly you could maybe only fit 20-25 people in their dining area. During peak business hours your probably better off taking your order to go. Prices here were pretty reasonable, price vary on the size of PoBoy you get. It averages from 8-17 dollars In short pretty decent PoBoy shop in the Jefferson area.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is in the middle of a neighborhood and it looks like a medium size shed. While the outside doesn't look like much, the food inside is delicious. If you don't care about calories, give the Thursday special a try: Homemade Chicken Fried Steak , Homemade Baked Mac, and Homemade Smothered Greens. Yes, HOMEMADE... Delicious! Sure you will feel like a fat ass after eating it, but life needs its guilty pleasures. Another favorite of mine on the menu, Meatball poboy dressed with mozzarella cheese.
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
Good sandwiches in an out of the way location. By only beef is that they only feature seafood on Fridays.
google avatar

Stephen G.

Yelp
As a visitor to New Orleans, it's nice to visit places where locals go. This is one of them! Had a Shrimp Po' Boy and Onion Rings. Food was great! Made to Order and fresh ingredients. All food came to the table hot! The staff are friendly and personable...great New Orleans people. Thanks for a great lunch, both the food and experience.
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
Found this hidden gem on here. I thought my gps malfunctioned when it took me here. The place is in a neighborhood. The owner is very friendly, maybe since I told her I was from out of town. Had oyster po boy, 6inch. But it was more like an 8inch. It was very good. I wanted more but my belly was full. I will go back for the mufalata sandwich, but call ahead because it takes 20 min to make. Because they only use fresh foods. Nothing frozen. Once it's gone it's gone for the day so specials go fast.

Stacey D.

Yelp
This place is the best little hole in the wall!! Staff is very friendly, portions are huge, and everything is delicious. We go at least once a week and haven't had a bad thing yet!
google avatar

J E L.

Yelp
Great Find. I love all of the old neighborhoods, and at Parenton's, there is a lot of care going into what they do. The meat po-boys are served on toasted, seeded Liedenheimer bread, and seafood on plain. The roast beef po-boy is full of flavor, and I'll be back for more.
google avatar

Zach F.

Yelp
OMG, I can't explain how good an expierence this was. This is a legit Mom and Pop small restauarnt establishment. The food is exceptional and of the highest quality. No one has better fried Oysters, no one. The lunch specials, especially the Chicken Parmesan are filling meals, and at great prices. We walked in and were greeted by Brenda, who is an Owner. She really made us feel at home and showed us different pictures and knick nacks that came from regulars. She gave us samples of Shrimp, oysters and roast beef. (we didn't ask, but gladly accepted) They have a 2 crab, softshell crab po-boy for $11. Can't beat that. They don't freeze anything at all, they prepare each meal to order, there is no holding areas, you order it and it's brought to you. I love neighborhood gems like this, so glad we found this place.
google avatar

Pat M.

Yelp
Brenda is a sweet heart and always so friendly. It may seem like the food is taking awhile, but then you realize it is all made fresh to order and you can taste the difference. I recommend Thursday's special the country fried steak poboy
google avatar

Aj G.

Yelp
First time trying this little old neighborhood establishment. The shrimp Po Boy was delicious. I'd recommend this shop for a great sandwich. The staff were great folks very friendly.
google avatar

Amanda G.

Yelp
Perfect poboys. Friendly staff. This place is exactly what you want from a neighborhood poboy shop. The shrimp poboys are my favorite.

John G.

Yelp
Absolutely the best neighborhood poboy in Old Jeff. The daily specials are all great. It's even better if Brenda tells you a story.
google avatar

Dave K.

Yelp
I really love this place. The roast beef. The hamburger poboy. The muffaletta. The club sandwich. Highly recommended! Pass up that unmentionable place on the corner and come here instead. Way better.
