They've really captured the ambiance of a jazz club. Well-rounded drink selection with pretty good table service.
When you buy tickets online, they did this thing where they have you sign up for an arrival window. When I booked for the 8pm show, the only arrival window left was 7:15, so I was being asked to arrive 45 minutes early... The weird thing was there were 2 shows that night, an early show at 6pm and a later show at 8pm. So, I thought it was weird to arrive while the early show was likely still going. Sure enough, I got a call a few hours before saying my seating time was moved to 7:30. Nice of them to call, I guess.
I understand why they do it. Similar to seeing a movie at the Alamo Drafthouse, if everyone shows up 5 minutes before the movie starts, the servers have to get everyone's order quickly and then the kitchen is slammed all at once. And yet, the Alamo doesn't ask you to arrive during a certain pre-show window. I get it, it's a small venue with a small bar staff. Even so, you'd think the natural randomness of people arriving early would take care of it, or just using an order card system similar to the Alamo. If people arrive right when the show starts, I think there's an understanding that you may not get served right away.
When saw a Canadian artist named Emilie-Claire Barlow, and they were having very noticeable audio issues most of the show. At first the audio was crackly, and then the singer's mic kept going in and out. It seemed like the crew was trying to get it fixed, replacing cables and whatnot, but things just never got working. That's got to be one of the worst things for a singer when the mic cuts in and out. Poor thing came all the way from Canada.
Maybe it was just an off night, but if they could get a few of these things sorted, I could see myself as a regular at Parker Jazz Club.
