Since we moved to Murfreesboro, the Parthenon has been a landmark restaurant. I even remember making a special trip across town to their old location and have eaten at both a few times. My review today is based on years of experience with this place, but is heavily weighted based on today's visit. There were some very good things and some disappointing. First the good, then the not so good.
I ordered an appetizer and a soup. The appetizer was unique and quite flavorful. I loved it! It was the Parthenon Dip, a blend of tomato, mushrooms, onion, feta and cream, topped with Parmesan. It was served with fried pita, which I had never experienced before. I really liked it.
They also served fresh hot bread with an olive oil dipping concoction. That was also wonderful. They flavored the water with lemon, which was very nice.
Now for the not so good.
I arrived a half hour after opening for lunch and was the first customer. You would think that a server would have appeared promptly - no. I got to listen to loud social chatter and laughing until my server finished her community building activity to come see what I wanted. It may not have been very long, maybe 5-10 minutes but I felt less than important.
I ordered soup and the appetizer. The soup came out and I waited for a while for my appetizer. A couple came in and placed their order and immediately got their appetizer at the same time as my delayed service. Hmmm.
Crab soup of the day was creamy and delicious but by no means resembled crab in flavor. It was KRAB, or whitefish substitute. Blah! Come on. At least get some Better Than Bouillon and TRY to fool me into believing that there was a seafood component. A restaurant with this price structure and reputation should do better than this. When I complained, I was offered a replacement of their standard Avogolemono, but I passed. I was charged full price for the soup. Most restaurants would not charge for a dish that did not satisfy, especially a higher end establishment.
No desserts were on the menu and none were mentioned. Ho-hum.
In looking over the other reviews, folks either love the place or hate it. As for me, I drive past it once per week at a minimum, and will keep on driving past. I believe they have a regular clientele that keeps them in business.
