I've now been to Pastis twice, and unfortunately my experience has been consistently underwhelming.
The space itself is absolutely beautiful. It is the kind of restaurant you walk into expecting a memorable dining experience. The menu reads beautifully too. On paper, everything sounds thoughtful, elevated, and worth the price point.
The problem is that the food simply does not live up to what is promised.
With the exception of the French onion soup, which was genuinely delicious and the only standout both visits, everything else we ordered was bland or poorly seasoned. Dishes sounded interesting but arrived basic and flat. I hate saying this, but I have had more flavorful meals at Olive Garden, and I only ever eat Olive Garden with my grandmother out of nostalgia, not because I am seeking good food.
What made it especially frustrating is how overpriced the food is for the quality being served. I intentionally choose restaurants in the 4 to 5 star range and am happy to pay more because I am looking for an experience. When I go out to eat, I want the meal and the service to feel intentional and well executed. If that is missing, it makes it hard to justify the cost, regardless of how beautiful the space is.
Service was another disappointment. Our server seemed irritated the entire time. I understand they were busy and likely overwhelmed, but when you are charging premium prices, hospitality matters. Dining out should feel welcoming, not tense or transactional.
After leaving, I looked at other reviews and found that many people share similar concerns. A number of diners mention bland food, lack of seasoning, and pricing that does not align with the quality. Others have also noted inconsistent or rushed service. That made it clear this was not just an off night.
I really wanted to love this place. Nashville needs restaurants that aim high. But as it stands, Pastis feels like a beautiful space with a strong concept that has not yet met the culinary standard it is charging for. If the kitchen elevates execution and seasoning, and service becomes more attentive and warm, it could be something special. Until then, it does not justify the price or expectations it sets.
