New York Deli Pastrami Queen Closes Times Square Location After Just Three Months - Eater NY

"Longtime Upper East Side Jewish deli Pastrami Queen has closed its new Time Square outpost — after just three months in business. The deli, which was originally founded as Pastrami King in 1956, expanded with the new Midtown location in March. It was the restaurant’s first expansion in over 60 years, and it set up shop inside the Pearl Hotel at 233 West 49th St., between Seventh and Eighth avenues. The new location served a similar menu to the UES one: pastrami sandwiches, brisket, corned beef, chopped liver sandwiches, and other traditional Jewish deli fare. Eater critic Robert Sietsema had nice things to say about the Times Square spot, describing the pastrami meat as “nicely fatty.” Pastrami Queen has become known for its thick-cut, crumbly version of pastrami, and it’s long been considered one of the best Jewish delis in New York City. It was also a favorite of the late food icon Anthony Bourdain. The deli originally opened in Williamsburg in 1956 as the Pastrami King. It moved to Queens before finally landing on the UES, when it adopted the new name Pastrami Queen. The UES restaurant at 1125 Lexington Ave. remains open." - Carla Vianna

Have tried them all over 50 years and stopped into new location in theater area for a taste. Hot pastrami melted in my mouth perfectly spiced and never had better. Staff very friendly and Gary the manager accessible to talk shop. Go. Try. Review. They deliver. Cut thin. Went back for the corner beef - juicy also.

What A great surprise! Looking for a good Deli to grab a bite before Book of Mormon. Searched for Deli’s near Times Square, but none close, and rated well. Then, after deciding to give up and head towards the show... Low and Behold, there’s a brand new Deli across the street from the Eugene O’Neill theater. Simply put, it was fantastic! Great corned beef, and a perfect matzoh ball soup! Nice job Pastrami Queen!

I ordered the basic pastrami and I was disappointed with this experience. The sandwich was really lacking in flavor, as were the mustard and the slaw sides – generally very homogeneous and lacking any real depth. On the bright side, I suppose it wasn’t a soggy overly greasy wad of meat and bread. The pickles were good and crisp. Relative to my experience at other traditional sandwich shops, this does not deliver on the 'overstuffed' claim. I was able to eat this very neatly as the contents of the sandwich were easily contained between the two slices of normal bread. I see that there are other reviews about a scale being used to measure the portions, but I didn’t notice a scale when my order was being prepared. Maybe they estimated the portion incorrectly? With a base price of +$20 (not including tip) for a very uninspired sandwich, I would tell my friends to go to a regular deli for lunch and wait for a special opportunity to go downtown to a competing deli. I’m generally good at giving a restaurant the benefit of the doubt, but I won’t be returning as the pickles were the highlight of this experience.

Great addition to the neighborhood and pastrami is the best in the area. Reasonably priced too (for NYC). Worth a visit!

The food is classic pastrami queen- same quality you’d find at their original upper east side location. Server was helpful and manager checked to make sure everything was good. Tourists: do yourself a favor and try this iconic New York pastrami spot!

Love this place - If you're looking for the best Pastrami in the theater district then this is definitely the place! I personally loved the pastrami, corned beef and pigs in a blanket! Yummmm... This brand new location is clean and beautifully done. Will definitely go back for more.

Best pastrami in NYC. Service was just slightly surly, but the pastrami made up for everything. We wanted to have one more deli trip before flying out and tried Pastrami queen on a whim. Definitely my go to from this point on. Seriously, I dream of this sandwich. Wow!

I stay at the Pearl Hotel in New York and last month when I was there, Pastrami Queen had a "Coming Soon" sign up. So I was thrilled to be in town again this past weekend and learned the location was opening on Tuesday the 5th. Walking out of the hotel on Saturday, a man flagged me and my two travel companions in to participate in the "Friends & Family" preview. My wife ordered the Motza Ball Soup. Delicious!!! The motza ball is practically the size of a baseball. The broth is just the right amount of salty. The noodles are small and fine. Really a wonderful bowl of soup. Our friend ordered the Brisket Sandwich. It was stacked high and she was very satisfied. I ordered the Pastrami sandwich on white bread. Another review called it the best pastrami sandwich in the theater district. I would go further and say I haven't had a New York pastrami sandwich this good since Carnegie Deli closed. The pastrami was juicy and fell apart. There is delicious deli mustard on the table, but I didn't need it. But let me tell you about the white bread! I have never had better white bread in my life. It was sturdy and held up to the piles of meat. Seriously the best sandwich I've had in a long time. My wife and our friend split an order of onion rings. They didn't do anything for me. In fact, reminded me of funnel cake batter. But both my wife and our friend are now big fans of them. All in all, you will not go wrong at this wonderful genuine kosher deli. A true highlight of our trip to New York.
