The Best Cakes in Los Angeles

"Pastry chef Jay Chen’s line of delicate cakes is ideal for those who think they don’t like cake. Texturally lighter and less sugary than average slices, the mousse cakes at Patisserie Bluejay come in flavors like mango yuzu, peach oolong, and even tom yum. — Cathy Chaplin, senior editor" - Cathy Chaplin, Eater Staff

Patisserie Bluejay in Arcadia Is Bringing a Tech Startup Mentality to Cake - Eater LA

"Patisserie Bluejay is a bakery run by pastry chef Jay Chen and her software engineer husband, Ivan Lo. The shop features a 'cake picker' on its website to help customers choose from its diverse cake options. Located in a strip mall in Arcadia, the bakery applies tech start-up culture and design thinking to its cake-making process. The cakes are a fusion of French techniques and Asian flavors, catering to Asian palates with a Western twist. The bakery is known for its innovative and constantly evolving recipes, often developed through customer collaboration. The shop has gained a loyal following due to its commitment to quality and transparency in the baking process." - Cathy Chaplin

Found this store on Eater LA and came on a Saturday. It was cheerful to get the limited special cake — chestnut tiramisu! The chestnut cream is so yummy! A bit pricey ($29 total for four desserts) but truly worth it. The genmaicha tofu cake is my favorite. It has a rich soy flavor and the texture is so soft! I also like the blueberry and lavender cake with jelly on top. Excellent combination! Staff were very careful about packaging so even I drove for roughly an hour with the cakes, they remained intact all the time!

Ants in the cake!!! Can't believe it! I learned the store from social media and wanna give a try since I like all bakery and creamy food. I finally got the time to go there but unfortunately they only had very few items displayed. I bought the mini mango cake and can't wait to eat in the car. When I was almost done, there was live ant! I felt it so disgusting. I'm a patient with very low white blood cells (only 2 in average and being monitored by doctor every month). So I'm extremely careful on the food hygiene issues. So apparently they have this food hygiene issue. It'll be on my black list forever!

I've been coming to Patisserie Bluejay for many months now, and it's now my go-to place to order birthday cakes! They've switched to a preorder model as of Sept 2024, so it's best to DM them on insta (@ patisserie.bluejay) for cakes! My cake preferences are usually not too sweet, light and fruity, and not too heavy with cream. Patisserie Bluejay cakes are my ideal. However my absolute favorite item here is the black sesame cookie - perfectly nutty and not too sweet! Their milk tea cookie is also fantastic (and usually sells out early). I've tried a variety of cakes and other pastries here, and have shared them with many others. I've noticed it's really down to personal preference on what is best - so you really can't go wrong with whatever catches your eye! I love the lychee rose and mango yuzu cakes. Their caneles are my mom's favorite. And their cream puffs are always selling out!

I would like to come back to try their punch puffs. Their milk tea cookie is phenomenal!!! I would come back to try more cookies as well. The texture of the cake is light and flavors are unique, but I’m just not a big fan of cake, so I would only come back for the cookies and puffs.

My first time there. I was craving a pistachio pastry. And they had a cookie that was just amazing. Perfect amount of sweetness, crunchy outside and soft in the inside. The cookie had these candied pistachio on top just made it so perfect. I also purchased 2 candle light mini pastry. So yummy. My mom had one and said she didn't want to finish it because it was so good. Definitely will be going back. Thank you for the experience.

Small but mighty. Husband & wife team. Cakes with Asian flavors with unique twists. Everything I’ve tried here is good!! Mouse so creamy and smooth, you won’t regret. Best bakery in the 626 area!

Our favorite patisserie of all time! There are many awesome flavorful pastry. Owners here are extremely nice. They always try their best to make sure customers are happy! From time to time, there will be interesting new pastries to try! It’s always exciting to visit, as there will be surprise new pastries from visit to visit! My personal favor is their canele! Canele is flavorful, crispy on the outside and puffy inside. Since trying the canele here, I had not found any other comparable anywhere else.

I had been dying to try Patisserie Bluejay out for some time. Finally got the chance a couple days back. I was intrigued by their unique flavors which I’ve not seen elsewhere. Keep in mind that I went to many SGV Chinese/Taiwanese bakeries so I consider myself a bit of a snob in that department. Got the sesame cookie, which was moist and huge. Also, their mango cake luckily seemed appropriately sized while still delicious. Furthermore, I like the physical presentation of their desserts. They speak Cantonese and Mandarin here. It is located in a busy plaza of Arcadia. I would definitely return so I could try other items!
