Pâtisserie Mahrousé - Review - Ahuntsic - Montreal - The Infatuation

"Mahrousé has been making pistachio-studded Middle Eastern sweets for the past 50 years. There are two locations: Ahuntsic, in its own building with a small sit-down café just north of the train station, and the more transit-friendly Mountain Street location downtown. The many varieties of jewel-like baklava, with pistachios or walnuts in ring, nest, and square shapes, showcase the skill of Mahrousé’s pâtissiers. They also make karabeeg semolina shortbreads with nuts and orange blossom—a specialty here—and lots of other honey-soaked treats. There are simple breads if need be, but we prefer their fatayer stuffed with spinach, or the savory, salty, mastic-flavored Ka'ak el Eid round loop crackers, dotted with nigella seeds." - Ivy Lerner-Frank

The Best Bakeries and Pastry Shops in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"One of Montreal’s most popular Middle Eastern bakeries, Pâtisserie Mahrouse has been around since 1975. In that time, it’s become a favourite for its wide assortment of baklava, as well as halawet el jibn (sweet cheese rolls), ma’amoul (shortbread cookies stuffed with dates, walnuts, or pistachios), and zalabia (fried dough)." - Daniel Bromberg

Google
One of the best dessert shops I’ve ever tried! Every item—whether Eastern or Western—tastes incredibly fresh and made with real care and top-quality ingredients. You can truly taste the love in every bite. The service is excellent, and the staff are super welcoming and kind. You instantly feel like a valued customer. Prices are very reasonable considering the high quality, and the packaging is elegant—perfect for gifts too! This place has definitely become my go-to spot whenever I want to treat myself or bring something special to friends and family.

I came in for a coffee and some ice cream. The coffee was great—strong, just as I expected—and the ice cream was delicious. The staff are genuinely friendly, and the place itself is beautiful. I’ll definitely be coming back to try their wide selection of pastries.

I recently visited this charming patisserie known for its authentic Syrian flavors, and it did not disappoint! The variety of desserts was impressive, each bursting with rich, traditional taste. Their coffee was a standout—unique, aromatic, and absolutely delightful. A must-visit for anyone looking to experience the perfect blend of Syrian desserts and exceptional coffee. Highly recommended!

One of the most dishonest places I’ve ever been to. Honestly, it was a shameful and deeply embarrassing experience. I brought this cake to a gathering with our friends, and it was absolutely terrible. Words can’t even describe how bad it was. When we cut the cake, it looked fine on the outside, but the moment we tasted it, we realized something was very wrong. The cream was sour, the cake was clearly old and had been sitting in the fridge for days, and it had an unpleasant smell like a mix of fridge odors. The fruits on top were borderline rotten. It was a truly unpleasant experience, and I would never, ever buy a cake from there again. It was humiliating to serve something like that in front of our family friends.

I went nuts for their furniture 😍😍😍 It certainly felt like home there Although the meat lacked fat, the kebbeh was still decent and priced adequately, so I'd be back for that The coconut macaroons tasted good 👌. The atmosphere is a 💯, and staff are warm and welcoming, so I'd go for coffee there But I will *NOT* be buying any dessert here It's too expensive(I only bought samples) and has nothing to do with the authentic name of Mahrouseh (that's why Aleppian people recommended me not to buy any) Almost No pistachio, certainly NO Ghee The halawet el jeben was way too soft and lacked cheese, and I think it was filled with ricotta ( I can do better at home ) Other desserts were fried in overused oil ... you can taste it The éclair dipped in chocolate sauce was a mess I honestly didn't enjoy any of it

Best lebanese/arabic sweets! The knefe is insane, the selection is great and the service is always on point. Love it!

This patisserie shop is hands down the best in town! While it’s a bit pricier than other places, the quality is on another level—you're truly paying for what you get. Not only can you enjoy a wide variety of delicious treats and sweets, but you can also sit inside, have a hot beverage, and soak in the Middle Eastern vibe. They even sell beautiful tea sets and other items perfect for hosting guests. The selection of sweets and combos is extensive and absolutely delicious! Don’t forget to take a look at their website if you’re unsure about what to get. They have it all there.

Yelp
Another great place to get your sweets and some of the Syrian traditional food. With a pleasant service and reasonable prices, why would you ask for more? Give it a go and pamper yourself with some delicious food that will put a smile on your face.

Yelp
Beautiful place, with absolutely superb baklava, and very friendly people. It is truly a well-established Middle-Eastern pastry master in Montreal since 1975 with premium quality that would never let you down. I have visited quite a number of baklava pastry places and tested them out. This is unquestionably one of the finest bakeries I have ever seen so far. From the very high-quality ingredients, to the good consistency of making each baklava piece, as well as the great freshness of the products, all areas are simply top-notch in the business! Their store layout, their very friendly and cheerful staff, and even their packaging, are all getting together to form a very enjoyably addictive experience. Aside from the artisanal baklava, they also have other pastries, cookies, chocolate, Turkish stretchy ice cream (Maraş Dondurması), premium cakes, cream puffs, fruit tarts, and I can keep going on and on and on.... Just be prepared to spend a lot there because it is simply irresistible. LOL. Take a look at my photos posted, you will get the idea instantly. At the end of the day, these are all sweet treats that you cannot eat too much at a time. So, it will be such a nice feeling to bring the baklava back and share them with friends, families, and loved ones. Such a beautiful place to visit in Montreal. An absolutely delightful experience.

Yelp
If you have driven on l'Acadie towards Sauve, you most likely would have noticed the beautiful interior of this elegant bakery with Middle Eastern flavours. They offer a variety of pastries and mezze. I have tried their ice cream cake topped with pistachios - very unique, their carabiche which resembles ma'moul with marshmallow side dressing - lovely. I will note that their ma'moul was on the hard side. Worth checking out if you have a sweet tooth :-)

Yelp
We went there an hr before closing so can't judge correctly. They were out of cheese Kunafah and said since we went some we need to buy a whole tray that was pre made so not fresh out of the oven! They microwaved it for us.. so to be honest not the best experience.. the topping was dislocated from the cheese.. both tasted great but not a homogenous texture for sure! Service was very kind and parking lot makes visiting a piece of mind!

Yelp
One of the best places in Montreal for authentic Syrian / Middle Eastern sweets. The location is beautiful, the interior is stunning and a great place to enjoy a cup of qahwa (Arabic coffee) with a sweet delight. During popular times (leading up to Eid or Christmas), the line-ups can be crazy, but their customer service is excellent. As soon as you reach the counters, they assign you with someone who helps prepare your order until checkout. They make the finest baklava, jam-packed with nuts and delicious kunefe, trays of which keep coming out warm and ready to eat. In the summer, they specialize in the famous Arabic ice-cream (Booza) which is a hand-made milk-based stretchy ice-cream rolled in pistachios. I love how the entire process is so entertaining with the one making it dressed up in traditional costume and putting on a show whilst he prepares it! I recently had them prepare a gift set to celebrate a friend's engagement, which included a gorgeous unique design 12piece coffee set, their own premium coffee beans, and assorted baklava - they did such an amazing job at wrapping the gift. Even though they don't seem to offer this service in-store, they went out of their way to prepare something beautiful! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Wow!!!! This is a must visit if you like sweets! Their baklava is insane! Soo fresh, so flakey, not super sweet and drenched in syrup unnecessarily. If I dare to say, it is perfect! The place itself is very elegant. We ordered to go and the packaging was amazing. I wish I would have ordered more. This is a must visit. You will not be disappointed! Highly recommend

Yelp
After 5 years of my friend wanting to go we finally made it here since we were in the area. Great location with even better baklava. Usually I won't eat it because it's to sweet but this one is out of this world delicious. It's a must try I swear.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this place accidentally on my way to dentist and I am so glad I found out this place. This place literally made me in love with Montreal with the thought, "you can get essentially anything, of the best quality, in Montreal." Never in my wildest dream, I imagined that Montreal can have mediterranean pastry of such high quality. When I went there I was honestly confused on what to order given the huge amount of variety. The friendly lady, realizing my confusion, chuckled and approached me and explained what is what. I ordered few things and an arabic coffee to have there in store and ordered an 1 kg assortment of baklavas for home. It was such a treat! The baklavas are not too sweet as well - which is what it should be I guess. Overall, as soon as you get inside this place, you will know that you are in the RIGHT place to buy mediterranean goodies.

Yelp
Mahrousé Mahrousé Mahrousé Oh my God what an amazing experience, this place! I finally went to Mahrousé after trying my mom's amazing treat she used to bring us from Canada. The best part of this place, is there wonderful service. As soon as you enter in this small cute patisserie the smell of the sugar, butter, and delicious Arabic spices, made my heart so happy as I was touched by the smells and looks and thinking of my parents country, Syria. We ended up going three times and I wish I went more. The first time I went I didn't have Canadian money, but they accepted American dollars and gave me change in Canadian currency. I tried: Lokum, freshly fried and with this tasty syrup on top. Baklava and other sweets that are in my pictures. But my favorite was the namura, because besides the fact that they did it amazing they put whole pistachios on top. Seeing the pictures and thinking about what we tried at Mahrousé makes me happy and my mouth watery. Shukran Mahrousé Thank you Mahrousé

Yelp
Best place for baklava for sure, they pride themselves for having fine quality baklava and it is well deserved. I didn't get the chance to try their cakes but I did try what Iranians call Bamieh which are the brown glazed balls and the swirled glazed desserts, I do prefer the Iranian recipe for this.

Yelp
I grew up going to this baklava place and TIL this day this is the best baklava place in town. This place has been my family's go to place for special events and treats. We even take their sweets to relatives in Toronto. Their old location on Liege was nicer than the place on Acadie, but I was told that they're moving into a bigger location in the next couple of months and also expanding their offerings to more than just baklava but also savoury items! Can't wait! Their baklava is super crispy, doesn't ooze of syrup like the Greek ones, and is the perfect sweetness. Also found out they use ghee instead of butter! If you go there, definitely try their newest baklava, the CHOCOLATE baklava. Just the right amount of crispy chocolate puff pastry with nuts, it takes baklava to entire new level.

Krikor M.

Yelp
Not just one of the originals but also on of the great middle-eastern sweets and baked good places ever. There baklava and kunafa Jibné I have ever had. I have to say not the cheapest but worth the money.

Yelp
My partner and I accidentally discovered Mahrouse after a serious shopping spree in Marche Central. We were tired, thirstly and hungry and Mahrouse proved to be the perfect closure for a leisurely day off. We've been to Mahrouse a few times since and it's become our no. 1 guilty pleasure in the weekends. This is a middle eastern bakery hidden outside the heart of Montreal (about half an hour drive from downtown). The interior design and decorations have a distinct and endearing middle eastern character: abundant use of gold color, large chandeliers and many trays of small pastries (to be bought by weight or per piece). There is also often a few small ethnic coffee and pastry accessories on display (and for sale). Each and every visit, the service we received was just exquisite: the staff are welcoming, kind, helpful and always patient with our questions about each and every pastry item. Nuts and dates are the common ingredients and multiple pastries are not sweetened by anything but dates. We usually get a turkish coffee together with a few pieces of different pastries; the sweets are always fresh (sometimes still warm!) and hit the right level of sweetness and some have this beautifully balanced and integrated  taste of spices (particularly cardamom) that you only get in middle eastern sweets. Not to be forgotten is their traditional ice cream; this one you have to try on your own to understand! It's a ball of really stretchy, simple but somehow rich ice cream that is rolled in crushed pistachio right before it's served! Walking into Mahrouse, you step into a relaxing, sweet and tasty little piece of the middle east. This an undeniable treasure, a gem worth taking a detour for.

Yelp
More than good it's the real meaning of perfect and the best place for the Arabic sweet in town

Yelp
This place was recommended to me by few of my Middle Eastern friends. They told to try in the early morning a freshly made Knéfé which I had no clue what to expect. I went by this small place early in the morning and I ordered one for a take out. It's basically a Middle Eastern croissant with lots of sesame on it. Inside, you'll find a generous portion of cheese with something that looks similar to bread crumbs (which I'm still skeptical about) and a sugar syrup that you drop inside of the sandwich. You're looking for my answer? It tastes like heaven! I also heard that you can find it in lots of Arabic places such as Andalos.

Yelp
Amazing dessert options. You may language barrier difficulties with some staff but they are very kind and someone else is there to help out. They have a few tables (inside and outside) to sit and have some coffee and dessert.

Yelp
Recently changed location - bigger establishment. Gorgeous! Selection of food is amazing. You can now sit down and enjoy what they have. Pricing isn't exactly cheap but you pay what you get and it's high quality across the board. Staff is super friendly and provide tips. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Stopped by today and the pastries were delicious , great place , great atmosphere. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
This place scores major points on a couple of fronts. 1- They offer the best authentic Syrian baklava in the city 2- Each baklava is made to perfection with the finest ingredients 3- The staff is genuine and friendly Everyone here from the store owners, to the staff and clientele is Syrian, which only makes it that much more legit. I first found out about this place from my Egyptian landlord, who claimed it was the best in town. I of course had to try it out. And wow, was he right!

Tianheng C.

Yelp
Great food and amazing service. We love this place, it's the best you can find in Montreal

Yelp
This is the best Arabic sweets shop in Montreal. The sweets are as authentic and varied as what one could get back in the Middle East and just as good! The staff is friendly and always willing to help. Everything is fresh, delicious and made with the highest quality ingredients. I highly recommend!

Mohamad T.

Yelp
At this place We can taste one of the best Middle eastern baklava, katayef and knefe in Montreal. The service is excellent and the staff is so friendly.

Alya H.

Yelp
Knafeh was dry, even though the salesperson coated it in atar. Decor was lovely though.

Cristina S.

Yelp
I had the pleasure of stopping in here for the very first time. The service was unbelievable, nothing I have not seen in awhile. The pastry's and coffee where so full of flavour. You need to check this place out.

Edouard T.

Yelp
I have been buying my oriental pastries there for the past 35 years , but yesterday it was the first visit to their new location . They have changed their staff , and probably also their pastry makers . the taste is not the same and the customer service is terrible . They don't even know how to set up a gift box and even worst they omitted to include the cream with the Karabeeg . it is very sad , but I hope Mr Nazem is still there to adjust the situation . Edouard Tufenkji Candiac

Yelp
Best service in any pastry shop so far from Jenny. Always serves with a smile and happy to see customers. Great recommendations. Every time I go, I always make sure she's the one serving me!!!

Yelp
My favorite Montreal Middle Eastern patisserie of the last few years, Mahrousé specializes in Syrian pastries and I'm particularly fond of all things pistachio there because they use only the freshest, most flavourful pistachios.

Yelp
I lived in Lebanon and can recognize the Best of the Lebanese/Syrian Baklavas, the Syrians being the Masters. I drive all the way from Brossard to buy from Mahroussé. The`re excellent!! Antoine K.

Yelp
The pastries are always fresh and handmade. The employees are very nice and very welcoming. They made me try a bunch of pastry so i could have a clear idea. The place is clean and in good shape

Yelp
Pros and suggestions: Excellent Baklava. Hands down the best I've ever tasted and I've tried several famous shops in the middle east. Don't make the mistake of trying the supermarket baklava or the packaged ones sold elsewhere which are the equivalent of supermarket sushi. I would try a mix if this is your first time and then decide what type you prefer. They also have variants if you want to cut down on your sugar intake. Try the date cookies (Ma'mool Tamer). They are pretty good. In the side fridge, they have the cheese desert. (cheese fingers) Which is tasty pancakes wrapped around melted cheese which you dip in honey. I would avoid the chocolate. It isn't their strongest department. Cons: A bit overpriced. Tips: -If you are ordering 1 kilo or 2, make sure to ask for it to be served on a plate rather than the box. Looks way better when entertaining guests or as a gift. -They only accept cash. -North of them is Abu-Elias which is a relatively cheap Arabic sandwich place/butchers which is pretty good for sandwiches.
