6 Best Day Trips from Paris

"This shop and tea salon is visually arresting, with 18th and 19th century and Louis XVI decor, and many of its original bones. Even the façade dates to the first part of the 18th century. The rows of shelves and display cases full of cakes, waffles (gaufres, the Méert signature), candies, and chocolates recall an old fashioned candy shop. The vanilla gaufre may be the house's signature, but any manner of other exquisite, perfectly prepared pastry are worth attention: financiers, éclairs, lemon tartelettes, Saint-Honoré, and another Lille specialty, the merveilleux. This place makes an impression inside and out." - Lindsey Tramuta, Mary Winston Nicklin

The Best Day Trips Outside Paris for Great Restaurants and Bars | Eater

"A 250-year-old pastry shop and tea salon in Lille’s historic center housed in architecture spanning the 18th to 20th centuries, renowned for its regional and signature sweets: thin, flattened gaufres filled with Madagascan vanilla sugar and the decadent merveilleux — layered meringue domes filled with whipped cream and coated in chocolate flakes, caramelized hazelnuts, or other toppings — making it a must-stop for anyone sampling local confectionery traditions." - Lindsey Tramuta

We had to queue for about 20 minutes, but it is a lovely tea room and all the cakes looked amazing! I opted for hot chocolate & their famous filled waffles which were really good! I went back the next day and got some to take home! The vanilla one reminded me of a custard cream biscuit! I do wish I tried one of their cakes too!

Very wonderful bakery shop / cafe like a creation of art. The displayed pastries were so perfectly arranged and looked delicious. The chandeliers, glass work enhanced the look of the boutique further. The open air garden cafe very nice , staff kind and polite , helpful. In the shop the goods are well displayed with price tags so easy to identify. The display shelves are so pretty and the colour combination very unique. Overall this is more like a pretty waffle or bakery museum and I loved my time here. I enjoyed vanilla waffle . Wanted to sit down in garden cafe so had also queued for the waiting line but it rained heavily suddenly so left in the middle and this time happy only with the wonderful waffle, will return next week or soon for a coffee and pastry .

A true jewel in the heart of Lille! Meert is as much about the atmosphere as it is about the sweets. The interiors are simply breathtaking—opulent chandeliers, historic wooden decor, classical sculptures, and ornate ceilings that transport you to another era. Whether you’re seated inside the regal tea salon or strolling through their boutique, the ambiance is a visual feast. I tried the coffee and their signature vanilla and raspberry-filled waffles—a delightful treat that lives up to its reputation. The coffee was beautifully presented and smooth, and the raspberry waffle had just the right balance of tart and sweet. Perfect for a special outing or if you’re looking to indulge in a bit of old-world French charm. A must-visit if you’re in Lille.✨

Had a very nice 3 course lunch. Lovely food presentation and surprisingly large serves. Good service and nice atmosphere. A little pricey, but we'll but worth the little extra cost.

The food here was decent – both the main course and dessert were fine, but nothing particularly memorable. What really took away from the experience, though, was the attitude of one of the staff members, who came across as quite arrogant. I was hoping for a warmer, more inviting atmosphere, but everything felt a bit cold and flat. For the price point, I expected better service and a more enjoyable overall experience.

Meert Bakery & Tea Room in Lille – An Elegant, Historic Delight 🕰️🍰 Meert, housed at 27 Rue Esquermoise in Vieux-Lille, is a gorgeous heritage pâtisserie and tea salon renowned for its Madagascar vanilla-filled gaufres, exquisite pastries, and refined elegance. The façade and interior boast lavish 18th–19th-century design, with gilded details, marble, and ornate ceilings—truly mesmerizing . What we loved: • Iconic vanilla waffles (gaufres)—thin, chewy, and filled with buttery vanilla cream—have been a signature treat since 1849, and connoisseurs swear by them . • A serene, opulent tea room offering an elegant setting complemented by piano music—perfect for those looking to indulge in a relaxed, refined atmosphere . • A selection of delicate French pastries—financiers, éclairs, pistachio choux, mille-feuille—that are beautifully executed and delightful to taste . A few notes: • The gaufres can be quite sweet, so you might prefer ordering those with fruitier or speculoos creams . • Prices are premium (around €3–4 per waffle and €7+ for pastries), reflecting its historic and tourist popularity

I waited 25 minutes to enter and ordered Tartelette Framboises. Taste was okay until i found the mold on the berry. When i report it, they took it without apologies and brought us back more berries with cream. At the end they deducted charge of that specific dish. Be careful when you order desserts not to swallow mold.

Yelp
No visit to Lille would be complete without a stop at Meert. Whether you're in the mood for a full tea service and accompanying delicious snacks, or just want to pick up some delectable chocolates to take with you as you wander through the streets, this place is not to be missed! Meert is also a great place to pick up little boxes of their signature chocolates to bring back to your loved ones - a little symbol of your adventures "on the Continent." I think I probably brought back a dozen little confectioner's boxes (and managed to keep one or two for myself). Come holiday time, don't miss Meert's awesome window displays! This and some of the other businesses around La Grande Place make wandering the streets of Lille in the cold winter months worthwhile!

Yelp
What a fabulous experience and way to slow down amid the busy Christmas markets and shopping!!! Definitely get a reservation--as I don't know how walk-up seating would have gone. You can also always walk-up and buy waffles and other pasteries live at the counter! We enjoyed a little bit of everything, but my favorite was a Chocolate Ganache dessert! We also got eclairs, waffles, coffees, and everything was worth it!

Yelp
Pricey desserts that look good and tasted ok. Macroons are double the place next door with similar taste. Chocolates are nothing special. Long lines to get in. Wine, beer, tea, coffee and soda.

Yelp
This patisserie spans two shops with a middle entrance between the two shops (one selling cakes and pastries, and the other chocolates) leading into two tea rooms, which was lovely and relaxing. The service is very quick too Unfortunately, as our train was delayed 3 hours on the way to Lille, and we already had lunch on arrival, and then a snack of churros and vin chaud at the Christmas market , I really did not have any more room to eat anymore, but my partner wanted to visit here before leaving for our train home. So I managed a hot chocolate which came in a heavy silver jug, which you pour into a tea cup, enough for 3 cups! My partner had the tea complete which consisted of a silver pot of ceylon tea and two doorstop thick toasted brioche with butter and strawberry jam. I tasted a mouthful of the brioche with the jam and it was delicious. We were also given two pieces of chocolates in the shape of a snowman and santa. The chocolate tasted like dark chocolate, very strong, how I liked it, so absolutely yummy! The total bill came to €15 which I thought was very reasonable for the ambiance and quality. You paid at the cashier outside, who seemed to remember what you ordered.

Yelp
Must visit this place for their waffle made from Madagascar vanilla! It comes in many types of fillings but I prefer chestnut. I also bought cakes to take away. It's very tempting because I LOVE french pastries and cakes.

Yelp
Meert is a must-see when you are in Lille. Meet is well-known because of their wafers filled with sugar, butter and vanilla from Madagascar called Gaufres. I bought some cute little boxes as a souvenir. Be aware that these Gaufres must be consumed within 8 days. Personally, I thought these Gaufres were okay, nothing special. The filling is sweet and sugary and the wafers have a chewy texture. The shop itself is tiny, quaint and kept it's old-style charm. There's also a luxurious looking tearoom next to the shop, but you'll probably need to book a table, because it looked crowded.

Yelp
*** TEA ROOM REVIEW *** Fancy-for-nothing tea room. Expensive drinks and frankly quite inattentive service for the price. The gaufres seemed not fresh, not crispy at all. My wife commented that Japanese 'taiyaki' (red bean pastry made in a mold that you can buy on the street) is cheaper and more desirable. If you come from money and are looking to waste some money and time while looking chic, this is for you. If not, ignore the tourist guide and skip the tea room. If you must, patronize the chocolate shop and the pastry shop (latter is quite nice looking from outside I must say.)

Yelp
They serve Potjevlesh here - L loves this stuff and always pushing it on me. Got me a jar of it, but I haven't opened it yet. Their hot chocolate is a bit too sweet for me, but A loves it and orders it every time. L likes this location better because they serve the Gaufre warm! I like Gaufre, but I can't have too much of it since I don't like heavily sweet things. When you purchase the box of Gaufre - it can last up to 8 days but I feel like it's not as good fresh!

Yelp
You must visit Meert in Lille! Yes, it is a little pricey but so worth it. All kinds of teas and coffees. The selection of pastries is to die for! Also they have a lot of different ice creams. Lovely ambiance and the tea room is so beautiful. There is also an outdoor patio when the weather is nice. I had the rum baba and rose tea. Both were wonderful!

Yelp
Meert is the typical place where you have to forget about your diet and go for it. It's the oldest in France and probably the World and it's fame is well deserved. The cakes are eye catching and all the decoration is lovely. Meert is two shops and a salon de thé where you can eat their lovely desserts. Coffee and cake cost around 10-12€, but you have to try them, delicious.

Yelp
The displays in the shop were lovely, the tea room visible from the front looked gorgeous, and the guidebooks had all recommended Meert. Unfortunately, my experience was a very disappointing one. I was seated to the rear of the patisserie, in a sort of conservatory. The room was pleasant but my table hadn't been wiped. I asked for this to be done when I ordered (it was visibly dirty); but still had to ask the rather uninterested staff a second time. The cursory whisking of a cloth removed the worst but the table was still by no means clean. The serviette was dumped on top of a remaining left-over drip of something, but wasn't replaced. This was the sort of service I wouldn't appreciate in a burger bar, let alone an expensive patisserie. When the people on a neighbouring table clearly didn't understand the specials rattled off at top speed, there was no attempt by the waiter to repeat or clarify. The tea was fine, and came with two chocolates; the famous gaufre was incredibly sweet - not really my taste, but nicely done. Service continued to be rather mediocre: most of the waiters were apparently indifferent to the experience of their customers. Pretty as this patisserie is, I got the sense that in terms of service, the place is rather resting on its laurels. I would have enjoyed it more had I bought a few cakes to take away.

Yelp
Most of the products are good. Gauffre are little bit expensive! But they got a unique taste

Yelp
A classic institution in Lille. Within easy walking distance of the town square, it has a very distinctive classical, dark framed front windows to view the beautiful desserts and pastries. As we walked in, we were warmly greeted and allowed to peruse the artistic baked goodies. Admittedly, the prices are relatively high, but so is the quality. Considering this isn't a town that many people consider when visiting France or going to Belgium, it is well worth the stop to at least try the gaufre. Luckily, they also had strawberry flavor, which was nearly as good as the original Madagascar vanilla. Overall, well worth the price to try here and take some for the trip back home!

Velina L.

Yelp
Lille's most famous chocolate store, this institution of a store is elaborately and beautifully decorated. There are two entrances (I think there's a third as well that leads to the salon de thes), one for the boulangerie/patisserie section, one for the chocolate section. The chocolate truffles were pretty good, with selections in both dark and milk chocolate. In the patisserie, they sell their famous gaufres, or thin wafer sandwiches with a sweet vanilla creme filling. Smells amazing, but it was much too sweet for me. The caneles were fine, but not great. I much prefered the ones at Paul, which are a little more traditional. You definitely have to come here if you're in town, just because it's such an institution, but it's not my favorite place for chocolate or for pastries.

Qype User (Baggio…)

Yelp
Definitely one of the nicer patisseries in Lille, having read about this place in a guidebook, I decide to go along and take a peek - I must say that they do a very good job in presentation and luring the random passers by in. Their menu is much broader than I had imagined, I had expected only several desserts and a couple of drinks, but was surprised when by their starter, which was a tuna and salmon tart. There were also meat and fish dishes (although unfortunately, I had eaten not long before on that day). However, best of all was the vanilla waffle. Would definitely go to Meert again when I next visit Lille.

Yelp
Ok it is pricy but it is the best ever vanilla waffle!! When do you move in London? I miss it so much here!!!

Qype User (mwar…)

Yelp
Though it has good pasteries it seems to be riding on an old reputation. Very overpriced. Though good I'd recommend trying one of the other local places.
